othing can be more upsetting than finding your pet not at home or where you expect to find them. It’s a sinking and frantic feeling when a pet goes missing but where do you start? Sometimes people feel that their pets will come back on their own but in the interest of time, why not get the word out as soon as possible? Using that method along with some basic tools may help ease your mind when seeking a quick reunion with your pet. ID Tags and Microchipping When you first adopt your pet, one of the first things WAIF recommends is getting an ID tag for your pet. This should include your pet’s name, your contact information such as a phone number, and if you have one, a microchip number. A microchip is a great secondary means of protection but in order to be effective it needs to be registered with the microchip manufacturer. Since the microchip is inserted by a veterinarian, they can guide you on how to register the microchip properly. If the collar or ID tag falls off your pet, microchipping is a great back-up plan should your pet go missing. Some people forget that the most important

step in microchipping is the registration. If you don’t register the chip, there’s no information that will direct your pet back to you.

Licensing Your Pet Licensing your pet is another helpful way to support efforts to quickly bring home your pets. Not only is it the law but it also quickly identifies (through a license number) that your pet is up to date on rabies vaccinations. Good Samaritans will be much more likely to handle and temporarily care for your pet if they know that it is healthy and up to date with rabies vaccinations. Licenses need to be renewed annually and the fees typically range from $10 to $35 (for altered or unaltered pets). Licenses are good only for the calendar year in which they are purchased. For example, if you purchase a license in January, the license expires December. If you purchase a license in November, it will expire the next month. Be sure to make it a resolution in the new year to get your pet licensed! County licenses for dogs can be purchased in-person at the following locations:

In the City of Oak Harbor, licenses are not only required for dogs but for cats too. Steps to Take in Locating Your Lost Pet One of the most vital steps you can take in reuniting with your pet is getting the word out within 24 hours. The following suggestions may not guarantee success but your chances of a fast reunion will greatly increase implementing any or all these recommendations. Contact Animal Control 6

For those on the north end of Whidbey (Oak Harbor and Coupeville), call the nonemergency ICOM Dispatch line at (360) 679-9567. For those residing in Greenbank, Freeland, Langley and Clinton, call (360) 3214400. Contact WAIF Many people will take a lost dog or cat to their local animal shelter and WAIF is no exception. During our daily business hours of 9 a.m.-4 p.m., call (360) 678-8900 ext. 1100 so that WAIF animal care staff can take an official lost and found report in order to assist in identifying animals that come in or who may already be in our care. Strays are held for a minimum of six Whidbey Pet Directory

days in Oak Harbor and five days in Island County before becoming available for adoption. If your pet has been found, don’t forget to let us know so we can update our records. Leave something with your scent This may work especially with dogs. If you have an idea of where they went missing, consider placing a recently worn item with some water near by. If your dog is crate-trained, you may want to consider leaving their crate out with familiar bedding if there’s a safe place to do so. Spread the word through social media Facebook is a great tool CONTINUED ON 8 2018

REMEMBER FIDO AND FLUFFY WHEN PLANNING FOR DISASTER Your disaster plan should cover your pets. Here are some things you’ll want for your emergency kit: • Food and water for at least seven days per pet • Litter box, litter, scoop and garbage bags • Medications and medical records • Leashes and carriers • Photos of you with your pets to help identify them if you’re separated For more info about pet emergency care go to redcross.org/pets And don’t forget to prepare your people kit! You can’t help your pets unless you’re safe yourself.

where you can post a recent picture of your lost pet while providing a detailed description. You may even want to create a page specifically for your lost pet. Ask your friends to share your post or page and spread the word. You can also share the link on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/waif. animals. However, this does not negate the need to call WAIF to place a lost report. Facebook is a great tool but not an official means of reporting your lost pet to WAIF. Alert your neighbors and friends Via email, phone, and inperson. Posters and flyers Make sure you take recent photos of your pets should they become missing. Include the most recent photo(s) in your flyer with a basic description and contact information. Keep it simple with a large font for better readability. If possible, you’ll want to put these up right away and in proximity of where your pet went missing. Many businesses have kiosk boards and you’ll want to check with them before posting. Bring a flyer to WAIF locations (along with calling in a lost report) and consider dropping a flyer to local veterinary practices. Use classifieds. Place an 8

ad in the “Lost and Found” section of Craig’s List or consider placing a free classified in the Whidbey Weekly for two weeks. A picture can be included at a small cost. Keep an eye out. Visit WAIF’s online APB (All Paws Bulletin) report at www. waifanimals.org/lost to view who’s come into WAIF facilities as a lost or stray pet. You can also visit www. groups.yahoo.com/neo/ groups/whidbeylostdogs/ info to report a lost dog or if you’ve found a dog. If you’ve lost a dog in the City of Oak Harbor, be sure and visit their stray page on Facebook: www. facebook.com/City-of-OakHarbor-Stray-Pet-Page. For a statewide source, visit: lostfoundpetswastate.com. WAIF not only enjoys making connections between shelter animals and adopters, but also keeping those connections by reuniting owners and their pets. WAIF makes every effort to quickly faciltate reunions and the steps above that you can take can greatly increase the opportunity of a happy reunion as well. Together we can keep pets safe and home...where they belong!

What our customers are saying: When I met Karry, I had just adopted my dog Frankie. I was excited to learn and figure out how to become a team with him.  I had never had a dog before, and I was nervous.  I was also starting to notice pretty quickly that my dog seemed different from many others…more than just not being very well-behaved.  It became apparent that Frankie had a hard past, likely with some severe abuse, and it was causing him to react with a lot of anxiety to the world around him.  He was fairly non-functional when it came to interactions with anyone other than myself.  After some hard reality of what that might mean if we couldn’t work through his issues, we began the hard work of finding peace for Frankie. This began with home visits from Karry and her wonderful assistant Tracy, who would literally come over and allow Frankie to just get used to having someone else in our home.  Once he could process guests, we were able to begin some simple things like sit, meeting other dogs, and other people.  Our training process took much longer than the standard training syllabus, and looked a lot different, but Karry was with us every step of the way.  We even threw some curveballs her way by introducing my fiancé into the mix and getting him up to speed on how to keep Frankie consistent and on track.  Through many of my phone calls, texts, tears, and frustration over many months, Frankie has just completed his Canine Good Citizen, Canine Life and Social Skills, and Karry’s own test to prove that he is a sweet, kind, well-mannered, and functional member of society, and I am so proud!  This would truly not have been possible without Karry’s caring and loving guidance, and I am forever thankful for her patience and dedication to our little family. Frankie will probably never be a “normal” dog.  He still has anxiety, and Karry has said she intends to continue working with us through those issues, despite us finishing the prescribed purpose of training, which is truly above and beyond.  Karry, thank you for gifting our family with your knowledge, care, and expertise.  We experience so much joy because Frankie is now truly a happy dog.
