Welcome to Kent and to the 47th annual Kent Cornucopia Days celebration, hosted by the Kent Lions Club! This fun event offers a cornucopia of activities, entertainment and events with something for everyone in your family to enjoy. It also brings residents and visitors from across the region to explore our 128-year-old city and the diverse cultures that make us unique.

This year’s theme is Memories, Moments and More which is really what this weekend is all about – Dana Ralph remembering past festivals, creating new memories Mayor City of Kent and living in the moment.

As part of Seafair, Kent Cornucopia Days is South King County’s oldest and largest festival. It features a street fair with a variety of vendors from across the region, including everything from handmade jewelry and yard art to homemade sauces and 12th man-themed accessories. The festival also includes two food courts with some of the best “fair food” you’ll ever eat, a beer garden and two entertainment stages to amuse and delight folks of all ages.

Other favorite activities include the Kent Cornucopia Days 5K Fun Run/Walk, hosted by Don Brasher President, Kent Parks, the Cornucopia Dragon Boat Races at Kent Lions Club Lake Meridian and a Grand Parade to wrap up the weekend. Also, for the first time, Kent Cornucopia Days will include a car show!

None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Kent Lions Club members and volunteers. These passionate community members spend thousands of hours each year planning and organizing the festival. Please join me in thanking them for making this wonderful celebration possible!

FRIDay 7/13 events KENT LIONS FOUNDATION COLLECTS OLD EYE GLASSES, BRING YOUR OLD EYE GLASSES TO THE INFO BOOTH. KENT CORNUCOPIA DAYS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Kent Cornucopia Days 2018 royalty will be crowned at a ceremony scheduled for 2 pm on Friday. Mayor Dana Ralph will announce the names of the three scholarship winners: one young lady to be crowned as Miss Cornucopia.

Two runners-up will become Cornucopia Princesses. These fortunate scholarship winners will be crowned by the current Miss Cornucopia. This event will be held at the “Plaza Community Stage” held at Town Square Plaza (2nd & Smith St.)

KENT UNITED AND KENT COVINGTON YOUTH SOCCER Watch over 100 youth teams from throughout the Puget Sound area compete at this event. Tournament headquarters are at Wilson Playfields (U10-U12) and Petrovitsky Park (U13-U19).

Games will be played at 4 area High Schools (Kentridge, Kentwood, Tahoma, and Lindbergh) in addition to Wilson Playfields (132nd Ave & SE 248th St, Kent) and Petrovisky Park (SE Petrovitsy Rd & Parkside Way SE, Renton).

KENT LIONS “STREET FAIR” & “TASTE OF CORNUCOPIA” One of the largest street fairs in the NW with more than 300 vendors, food booths, sponsors, merchants and market. An unbelievably large variety of arts & crafts and food vendors, including commercial and other displays. Over 30 food booths throughout the streets, and two food courts next to the entertainment stages.

KENT CORNUCOPIA DAYS 5K FUN RUN AND WALK Kent Parks Department is pleased to present the Kent Cornucopia Days 5K Fun Run, encouraging families to participate together to get outside and exercise at Three Friends Fishing Hole Park. Day of race registration will begin at 7:30 am. The race features a fast down and back along the Green River Trail.

As the son of Constantine Oberto, Art took over the family business when he was 16. Every day before school, Art would set up the production process and would ride his bike to deliver the finest cured meats to anyone in the Seattle area. After school he drove the company truck around town selling Italian sausage, salami and capicola. In 1964 he started selling beef jerky. He and his wife Dorothy have four children, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Prior to the Oberto Sausage Co. sale in spring of 2018, Art served as Director Emeritus on the Oberto Board of Directors.

HISTORY OF THE “MAPLE VALLEY STREET RATS CAR CLUB”

Founded in Maple Valley, Washington. This car club has two primary goals. The first is to promote preservation, enjoyment, restoration and or modification of 1980 and older vehicles without make or model preference. The second goals is to provide scholarships in automotive technology to deserving students.

The Maple Valley Street Rats is a spin-off from the Tahoma High School Street Rats, also of Maple Valley, Washington. The Tahoma High School auto shop instructor and his students established the Tahoma High School Street Rats in 1985. The name “Street Rats” came from Street Rods plus the big block Chevrolet engine nickname.

A student from Tahoma High School used the colors scarlet and the black to design the Street Rat logo. The original goal of the high school club was to develop interest in hot rods and muscle cars. As the club grew, its goal shifted to providing community services such as food drives, Easter egg hunts, Christmas toy drives and more.

The idea for the Maple Valley Street Rats started in an effort to offer financial scholarships to deserving students going to automotive schools after high school. From 1999 to 2017 the Maple Valley Street Rats has awarded more the $57,000.00 for students to attend a variety of automotive schools. The club started in 1998 with seven members , mostly from local automotive businesses in Maple Valley. The Maple Valley Streets has developed the following scholarship fundraisers: • Friday night cruise-ins, Covington, Wa at the Walmart store-May Thru September • Maple Valley Days car show at Lake Wilderness Park in Maple Valley,- 2nd Saturday of June • Automotive Swap Meet, Covington, Wa at the Walmart store – 3rd Saturday of August • Kent Cornucopia Days car show-Kent Wa—2nd Saturday of July

PARADE INFORMATION: Kids and all the Family love the sights and sounds of the Floats, Dance and Rhythm teams, and the Civic Culture that fill the Kent street at Parade time. There won’t be a separate category for the kids this year but rather a chance just to join in and have fun being in our home town parade.

We are anticipating the presence of several floats, the SEAFAIR pirates and clowns and the Seattle All City band.

SEAFAIR ROYALTY: In its 68th year, the tradition of SEAFAIR Royalty is rich with custom and acclaim. Known throughout the Northwest and as far away as Mexico and Japan. SEAFAIR Royalty serves as the official “mascots” for SEAFAIR and Greater Seattle. King Neptune Rex and the Prime Minister for decades have embodied the Puget Sound Area’s image of fun, celebration and community involvement and esteem.

King Neptune Rex and his Prime Minister represent the SEAFAIR Festival at key events throughout the year. They symbolize the dignity of the community and serve as greeters and promotional spokespersons for the festival. The King is chosen for his community leadership and stature. The Prime Minister is chosen from the experienced ranks of SEAFAIR and provides festival continuity and knowledge.

The King is the highest honorary dignitary of SEAFAIR, is recognized as such throughout the Pacific Northwest, attends key SEAFAIR events and out-of-town festivals with the SEAFAIR Float tour, and serves as a representative of SEAFAIR and of the City of Seattle.

SEAFAIR PARADE MARSHALS: We also would like to extend our thanks to the SEAFAIR Parade Marshals for their support in helping us organize and stage our Kent Cornucopia Days Grand Parade.

Saturday, July 14, forty plus teams will come to Kent to race for medals. The races begin at 8:30 a.m. and finals are after 3 p.m. Teams are from western Canada, Washington & Oregon, along with individual paddlers from California and across the nation! There will be numerous local Kent teams racing for the honors. The Kent Lions and the Kent Dragon Boat Association have spent all year planning for this event; it is one of the largest races in the state of Washington. The beautiful venue of Lake Meridian provides the perfect location for this style of race while giving the team members and public an outstanding view. This race benefits the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing.

For more information, go to www.seattledragonboatraces.com SHORT BACKGROUND ON DRAGON BOAT RACING Dragon boat racing is people friendly and teams contain people of varying degrees of athletic ability and physical limitations. Some teams are recreational, in condition, and others may be seriously athletic. Some others may be blind, survivors of disease such as cancer, have diabetes, and have other special needs. They learn about what they can achieve and do not allow themselves to be overwhelmed with any restrictions. They celebrate life by being actively engaged with it, and having a great time living it.

The time spent in a dragon boat results in teams learning to work together in unison to race to the finish line. The skills that are acquired have more to do with technique and synchronization, than brawn. Upper body strength is achieved in the gym and increased in the dragon boat. Dragon boats can go at a fast clip, rising upon the water, as paddlers do up to 90 strokes and more a minute, an amount for a well seasoned experienced team. In China a dragon boat team looks like an extremely fast perpetual motion machine. The lighter the weight, the more seasoned the paddlers, the faster they can go.

Kent Lions Club, working in association with the City of Kent has produced The Cornucopia Days event in Kent for the past 47 consecutive years. The event has not only provided good family entertainment for the more than 150,000 attendees each year, but also has provided funding by which Kent Lions have been able to generously contribute to community projects and charities.

VENUE INFORMATION: For the 3rd year, ALL games will be played on quality turf fields which include Wilson Playfields, Petrovitsky Park, Kentridge, Kentwood & Lindbergh High Schools and Maxwell Stadium. Tournament headquarters will be at Wilson Playfields (U10-U13) and Petrovitsky Park (U14 –U19).

From the North: From the Seattle area, take Interstate 5 south to the Kent Des Moines exit (also known as state route # 516). Drive east on this road, drive under Highway 167, then turn left (north) on 4th Ave, just a couple of blocks and you are there.

From the Eastside: Take Interstate 405 south to Highway 167, take Exit 2 (you will see Kent, Auburn signs).

Drive south on 167, exit at the Willis Street / Des Moines exit (also know as state route # 516).

Turn left (east) on this road, drive under Highway 167, then turn left (north) on 4th Ave, just a couple of blocks and you are there.

From the South: From the Tacoma area, take Interstate 5 north to the Kent Des Moines exit (also known as state route # 516). Drive east on this road, drive under Highway 167, then turn left (north) on 4th Ave, just a couple of blocks and you are there. Or take Interstate 5 north to the Highway 18 exit, go east on 18, turn north on Highway 167 (Kent, Renton exit), drive north on 167, exit at the Willis Street / Des Moines exit (also know as state route # 516).
