What My Home Means To Me

Every year, the 3rd Grade students of Helen Haller and Greywolf Elementary Schools are invited to participate in an Essay and Poster Contest called, “What My Home Means To Me.” This is held in conjunction with American Home Week and Realtor Associations all over the country sponsor this contest. The Sequim Association of Realtors has participated in this event for over 36 years and we are pleased to feature the winning essays and posters for both schools this year.

Students are asked to write an essay describing what makes their “home” special to them. The type of home they live in or who they live with are not the deciding factors on who wins the Essay portion. Winners are selected by the ‘heart’ with which they write. They often share about siblings or favorite rooms in their home. The Posters are also reviewed for the time and effort put into drawing their home.

Judging for these essays and posters is quite difficult as the students write such colorful and imaginative stories about their homes and many are gifted artists. For each school, there is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Essay winner and 1 Poster winner. The Sequim Association of Realtors sponsors prizes such as new bicycles, Razor scooters, educational board games, art cases and gift certificates. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Prizes awarded per school are: • 1st place Essay: Bicycle/helmet + $25 gift card • 2nd place Essay: Razor Scooter/helmet + $25 gift card • 3rd place Essay: Scrabble Jr game + $25 gift card • Best Poster: Art case + $25 gift card There is also a gift Card for the teachers to thank them for their support.

Heidi O’ Leary, 2018 Youth of the Year My Club Experience by Heidi O’Leary

I first started attending the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula at the mere age of six years old. My older sister attended the Club and my parents thought that it would be a great place for their shy and introverted little girl to meet new friends and come out of her shell. I didn’t know anyone except for my sister when I started. I remember feeling very overwhelmed and scared by so many new faces and kids older than me. I hung close to my sister for weeks on end. After seeing that I was always doing something artistic, she finally introduced me to the art room. There I was able to be my quiet, closed off self, while expressing my creativity through art. The art room became my safe haven. I was in there daily, keeping to myself, and drawing and painting away.

The art room coordinator took notice of my solitary tendencies and began encouraging me to interact with the other kids in the art room. Her gentle and friendly approach really helped point me in the right direction. Soon, I was making new friends, able to connect with even older kids, because of what we had in common. Once my confidence built my artistic skills excelled.

And after about a month and a half, I was comfortable enough to expand my club horizons and leave my safe haven, exploring what the rest of the Club had to offer.

I began to travel around the Club as if I had been there my whole life. I had an abundance of new friends and I even joined several Clubs to give myself new skills, meet new people, and continue to build confidence.

Through those clubs and programs a whole new Heidi emerged. Programs like Junior Staff, Keystone and Torch Club taught me about the importance of service to Club and community. They also taught me leadership skills and I became President of Torch Club and now President of Keystone. Through programs like Running Club, Healthy Habits and Smart Girls I learned how

to take care of myself, love myself, and the importance of an active lifestyle.

And they all gave me a new found sense of self-worth. Soon, I was reaching out to the new Club kids, giving them tours, showing them around, explaining what the club was about and what it had to offer. I introduced them to all the staff and assured them that as big and scary as the Club may have seemed, it was a really fun, great, and safe place to be.

As my involvement in the Club broadened, so did my love of volunteering here every chance that I got. I would offer to help clean the art room at the end of each day, help pick up trash in the snack area, help staff with projects, and help put the balls away in the gym. You name it, I offered to do it. I simply wanted to give back to the Club what it had given to me; a sense of purpose and put a smile on the other kid’s faces.

Eventually, I began volunteering with the younger kids. I would help the staff with game tournaments, help with programs, and help with kids who got injured. I would face paint at Club events, help serve snack in the kitchen, and so much more.

Now, I am an intern, I assist our kindergarten coordinator helping them with homework, reading to them, playing games with them, teaching them sign language, and showing them the same kindness and open arms that the staff showed me.

I would not change my Club experience for anything. I credit the Club for helping me become the person I am today; outgoing, confident, supportive, a hard worker, and compassionate. I was able to overcome a reading disability, being a social outcast, able to deal with family issues, and enhance my artistic creativity all with the help of the Club. I am proud to be part of helping other children learn those very same things. www.bgc-op.org
