Duck Derby May 2018

2018 BUB AND ALICE OLSEN TOP DUCKS: Sylvia and Larry Strohm

Couple a winning sales team Many couples have sold ducks for the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby, but none more effectively than “Team Strohm,” the husbandand-wife team of Larry and Sylvia Strohm. Larry first started selling ducks 15 years ago. “I approached Tami Rose (Wilder Auto vice president for customer and employee relations) and told her I wanted to volunteer. I ended up selling around 60 ducks that first year,” he said. Fast forward, and Larry has sold over 7,500 ducks over that decadeand-a-half span, including 1,495 ducks last year. Larry works at Wilder Toyota delivering parts, while Sylvia has her own business, Mack Ceramics. “Larry and Sylvia have been a great part of our team since 1994,” Rose said. “They want to be a

part of our events. For every celebration and even crisis, they are the first to arrive and last to leave. This team takes selling very seriously, and we are blessed to have them.” Sylvia has been a volunteer for many activities in Port Angeles, including the Clallam County Fair, the Eagles and the VFW, the latter which she and Larry have been members for 33 years. She will be the president of the Eagles Auxiliary next year. Sylvia didn’t catch the duck-selling bug until two years ago, but she has become an incredible salesperson. Although they sell at several locations, you can usually find Larry selling at Swain’s General Store and Sylvia at Safeway East. Between them, they

will log 146 hours at those locations alone during the 30-day duck selling period. On Mother’s Day, they were at their respective locations for the entire day. “I like to sell ducks because I love talking to people,” Sylvia said. “I run into old friends I haven’t seen in a year. It’s a good way to catch up. I also like talking to Safeway’s

employees. You learn things that you wouldn’t ordinarily notice.” Larry and Sylvia say people should purchase ducks from them, and there’s ample reason to believe that. Last year they sold the winning duck for both the main and VID race (to Daniel Thompson of Port Angeles and Hermann Brothers Logging and Construction, respectively).

Bub and Alice Olsen Top Duck Award The Bub and Alice Olsen Top Duck Award was created to honor the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby’s stars — those special volunteers who go far out of their way to help make Olympic Medical Center Foundation events succeed. The award is named for the original star volunteers, Bub and Alice Olsen. A longtime Olympic Medical Center Foundation board member, Bub sold ducks inside Swain’s General Store for 21 years until his death in 2010. He was one of the all-time top duck salesmen, with more than 15,000 ducks sold during nearly two decades as team captain of the Quacker Backers. His wife, Alice, also was deeply dedicated to the Olympic Medical Center Foundation cause. On race day each year, together they hosted the Very Important Duck Party, a tradition that continues today and is also named in their honor. Duck Derby season at the Olsen’s was a family affair — most of the children and grandchildren are involved in one way or another, including daughter, Sandy Sinnes, who is a past president of Olympic Medical Center Foundation. The Bub & Alice Olsen Top Duck Award plaque with the annual winners listed is displayed at the OMC Foundation office.

Duck Derby May 2018

Lucky duck will win its owner a new Toyota A lucky duck will win its owner a new 2018 Toyota Corolla. The 29th Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby and race is Sunday, May 20, at the Pond at Lincoln Park, located in Port Angeles off Lauridsen Boulevard (next to the Clallam County Fairgrounds). The Bub and Alice Olsen VID Race (Very Important Ducks) will be held at 1:30 p.m., with the main Duck Race following at 2 p.m. The Kids Pavilion opens at noon. The catered VID party, for those supporters who purchased VID packages will be in the old Loomis Tavern building at the race site. Lunch begins at noon.

HOW THE DUCK DERBY WORKS

Duck tickets can be purchased from the dedicated people who volunteer their time to sell ducks, many of whom set up shop at business around town and Peninsula. For each duck that’s “adopted,” the purchaser receives a ticket with a printed number, which corresponds to a number that is placed on the duck. One duck costs $6, or six ducks for $30. All of the numbered ducks are dumped into the pond at Lincoln Park on race day and make their way across the pond with help from the Port Angeles Fire Department volunteer firefighters, who use fire hoses to push the mass of ducks across the pond. The “owners” of the first 50 ducks to cross the finish line this year will win great prizes. The generous people and businesses of the North Olympic Peninsula make the

Jamestown S’Klallam tribe continues sponsorship of Duck Derby

The Jamestown S’Klallam tribe has again agreed to continue to sponsor of the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby and other Olympic Medical Center Foundation events during the next few years. “We appreciate the opportunity to help make a difference in our community,” said W. Ron Allen, Jamestown S’Klallam tribal chairman. “We have committed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the foundation over the past 15-plus years, and since our health clinic in Sequim works closely with Olympic Medical Center, we know firsthand what a difference the foundation’s fundraising has done for OMC operations. “We are extremely impressed with the leadership and team addressing the quality of health care in our community. We truly believe that the foundation makes a difference.” Olympic Medical Center Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner said, “Because of the tribe’s and other sponsorship, we are able to give 100 percent of monies that are donated to us at our events to Olympic Medical Center.” The tribe is joined by its business interests, including 7 Cedars Casino, The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course and the Longhouse Deli.

Each May, members of the Sequim Rotary Club don’t have any trouble finding ways to keep themselves busy. Besides spending countless hours selling thousands of ducks every year, the Sequim Rotary also helps put numbers on the ducks at the duck tagging event before the race. In addition to the Duck Derby, they also must find the time each May to help organize and operate the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade. Money raised by the Sequim Rotary Club over the years has been used for its support of Sequim organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, the Sequim Food Bank, the Carrie Blake Park project and the Museum and Arts Center. It has been used in the funding of scholarships for Sequim High School graduates, too.

Youngsters find fun at derby

PeNINSuLa DaILy NeWS

Olympic Kids Dental sponsors Kid’s Pavilion It will be a family affair again this year at the 29th annual Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby, and everyone is invited to partake in the festivities surrounding the main event, especially kids. Each year the Kid’s Pavilion becomes an entertaining place for children in the community, providing them with arts and crafts supplies and a location on race day where they can meet the Happy Tymers Clown Group, decorate their own duck, play games, win prizes or meet the big duck. The Kid’s Pavilion opens at noon with fun for children of all ages. A kid’s duck pluck will be held in conjunction with the Duck Derby. Children under the age of 18 can report to the Kid’s Pavilion at the event and purchase and decorate a duck for $5, which will be entered into the kid’s event. Winners will

receive trophies, while all entrants will be able to keep their artistic duck creation at event’s end. Entrants must report between noon and 12:30 p.m. Olympic Kids Dental has agreed to sponsor this year’s Kid’s Pavilion, Kid’s Duck Pluck and VID Race. “It’s great to be involved with the Kid’s Pavilion and duck pluck,” said Dr. Morrie Graves of Olympic

Kid’s Dental. “If we can see kids in a setting like this before they come to our office, they will be a lot more comfortable in the dental chair.” Stephanie Casillas is the Kid’s Pavilion executive director this year and is very excited about the activities that are planned, including the popular Duck Putt game and Ducky Toss. “This is a really great event, and the kids always have fun,” she said. To make this year’s derby the best yet, organizers invite children to come out with their parents to the events on race day at Lincoln Park. The duck derby is not only a chance to give back to our community in the most important way, but it is also a chance for families to enjoy some great entertainment and enjoy some family friendly activities, Casillas said.

The Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby Olympic Medical Center is deeply grateful for everything the OMC Foundation does to support the health care needs of our community. Thanks also to the organizers, sponsors, volunteers, duck sellers and supporters who make the Duck Derby a success. 852114297
