Kids get all fired up when they help other kids. They’re especially excited when they stop by the Port Angeles Food Bank to drop off donations. Some bring in profits from their hot cocoa or lemonade stands, while others share non-perishable food collected from friends at birthday parties. We love seeing these beaming faces as they experience the joy of giving to a cause that truly makes a difference.

The need is great. Each month about 2,000 individuals turn to the PA Food Bank to supplement supplies. That includes about 800 families, many with children, who face going to bed hungry without help.

Weekends are especially problematic for youngsters facing food insecurity who depend on lunches at school to see them through. For some it’s the only real meal they get in the day. So every week at the Food Bank, volunteers put together 500 Friday Food Bags packed with a rotating combination of proteins, canned fruits, soups, and granola bar treats. The food choices are selected to be easy for the youngest of children to prepare. In some cases these kids are on their own for feeding themselves, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays. Every Friday when school is in session the Food Bags are delivered to campuses for distribution. As a result, weekends are a bit easier for our young friends and neighbors.

But then comes both one week of Spring Break and two weeks of Winter Break when school is out. While happily anticipated by most, it’s a difficult time for hungry children and their families. So the idea of Break Bags was developed this year because it just seemed like the right thing to do. The PAFB marshaled resources and came up with supplemental food for 120 families of youngsters signed up through their Port Angeles schools. The Break Bags were filled to the brim with staples like bread, peanut butter, tuna, canned tomatoes, spaghetti and soup. But wait! There was also ground beef, eggs, milk, lettuce, carrots, apples, potatoes, onions and cereal. Nourishing food to help households create meals during Spring Break. When families are fed better, life is often less stressful for the children in them.

Deemed a powerful success in it’s first run, the PA Food Bank will repeat the program for December’s Winter Break from school, with the expectation that additional families will register as news of this popular initiative spreads.
