It’s taken 30 years for Northwest Collision owners Guy and Jonna Beaber, but the couple can finally say their shop is the Twin Harbors’ top choice in the categories of Auto Collision Repair and Auto Restoration/Body Shop. It also was a runner-up in a third category: Auto Repair Shop. Whether it’s body work, towing, detailing or air conditioning in need of recharging, this shop can handle it. When thinking about what caused the store to rise to the top this year, Guy said “it’s just the quality” of the operation. Some recent improvements include eliminating the insurance contracts that limited Northwest Collision’s customers. Guy said it’s helping attract a wider range of customers who don’t need to find shops that cover their insurance. “Now people know they don’t have to go
to the shop that has that contract. I think that’s working well for us,” he said. Guy said this is the first time they’ve won this award in years, and added that the shop has had a good deal of revenue increase in the past year as they’ve been completing work on about 10 cars a week. “Our sales are up $400,000 from two years ago,” he said. “For a small business, that’s a pretty significant amount.” Another improvement, Guy said, has been boosting pay for staff members and getting them more involved in the operation. “We’ve made our workers part of the business. I’ve got guys who take home $2,200 a week — that’s pretty good money for the collision trade,” he said. “They’re happier, I think, with the money. They’re part of the whole program now, not just the hourly wage.”

Gary Mitchell now operates four NAPA Auto Parts Stores around Grays Harbor.
When Harborites need to tune up their vehicles or buy that hard-to-find part or tool, NAPA Auto Parts is often the place to go. Store owner Gary Mitchell said he’s always felt like NAPA has been in the running for Best Auto Parts Store on the Twin Harbors, but he’s never been able to secure the top spot before now. The recent opening of a Montesano branch might have made the difference to push it over the top, he said. “With the addition of the Montesano store, which we purchased last year, it’s four stores all around Grays Harbor, and that’s probably a lot of customers who I suppose voted for us,” said Mitchell. “I wasn’t surprised, but it seems like we’ve always been a runner-up or something for it. … A lot of people were really excited about winning.” Since opening the new store, Mitchell added that it has already received some noticeable improvements, such as better inventory space and the ability to make hydraulic hoses. “We almost doubled the inventory in the store, and we’ve added a capability to make hydraulic hoses,” said Mitchell. “We had them before but they were really, really weak.” Mitchell has operated the Hoquiam and Ocean Shores NAPA shops since 2011, and the Westport branch since 2016. These branches all carry a wide variety of parts for whatever your car or truck’s needs might be.

Quinault Beach Resort & Casino has won two categories for the past two years.
While Quinault Beach Resort & Casino received the Best of Twin Harbors awards for both Best Casino and Best Place to Stay for the second consecutive year, the facility is not resting on its laurels. Owned and operated by the Quinault Indian Nation, QBRC is a year into a $25 million expansion that will enhance the experience for visitors and locals alike. The first phase of development includes a new circular bar, expanded gaming area and devices including a smoke-free gaming area, a Quinault-themed buffet and an expanded kitchen. “We couldn’t be more excited about the future,” said Don Kajans, CEO and general manager of QBRC. “Our guests have been wonderful in supporting us and demanding more space and gaming options, amenities like the buffet and especially more Quinault cultural influence in the art and design.” The expansion follows the completion of a 159-room remodel at the resort, which attracts visitors from throughout the region to the popular beach area with live entertainment, events and casino activities. “We invest in our resort so people will find maximum comfort and have a truly enjoyable base from which they can enjoy the entertainment of the casino, a walk on the beach or a hike in the forest, the shops of Ocean Shores or birdwatching at the estuary,” said Fawn Sharp, president of the Quinault Indian Nation. “There is so much to do here, and as the resort continues to expand, so does the value of the experience. The Quinault Nation invites everyone to come join us and enjoy our traditional hospitality.”

Under the “loans and credit cards” tab is a pull-down menu with helpful information on all sorts of loans, from cars to horse trailers. Paulette Raico, director of marketing for the credit union, said representatives can help customers navigate the loan process. “Whether you’re buying a home or a car, if you haven’t ever done anything like that, it’s nice to know there is information folks can look at before they buy," she said. Raico said one thing the credit union has going for it in terms of car loans is the long-term relationships it has established with local car dealers. The credit union can provide preapproval for loans before a customer goes shopping for a car. That can speed the process and signal sellers that you are an eligible buyer. In some cases, the credit union can help buyers head off trouble later. “We help people look at their budget and see how much they can afford,” Raico said. “Sometimes people like to dream about things that don’t fit in their budget.” In those cases, the credit union representative can show buyers what they need to do to reach that goal.

FOOD & DRINK SPOTLIGHT: La Salvadorena When Luis Flamenco bought La Salvadorena restaurant in 2010, he vowed to keep the prices low, the food authentic and the portions big. This combination has earned him a loyal following — and 2018 bragging rights for Best Salvadorean Food on the Twin Harbors. “That’s been a big focus for the owner, keeping prices low so people can make more than two trips out a week,” said Lucy Garcia, Flamenco’s fiancee. One of the restaurant’s most popular items is the pupusa — basically a choice of meat and/or cheese stuffed inside a thick flour tortilla and fried. They are tasty — and, at less than two bucks apiece, they’ll fill you up without breaking the bank. The menu has items you might expect at a Mexican restaurant, like burritos, fajitas, quesadillas and tacos. It also has fried plantains and pastelitos — pork and vegetables wrapped in dough. Then there’s the mares (a seafood soup) and tortas (sandwiches toasted in a press, Cuban style). For the more adventurous, there’s menudo, a beef tripe soup. The daily specials are written on a chalkboard next to the cashier. The atmosphere is airy and colorful, with a mixture of tables and booths. Walk up to the counter, place your order and then take a seat, and the friendly staff will bring it to you in short order. At any given time, a half-dozen people are working in the kitchen and in the dining area. The restaurant, at 122 N. H St. in Aberdeen, is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the week.

Harbor Physical Therapy Services tops the list this year for Best Physical Therapy Service and boasts an experienced staff who blend their knowledge with the latest technology. Jill and Patrick Wilson started the business in 2001. Since then, they've been building a staff of physical therapists serving clients ranging from weekend warriors to loggers and others with physically demanding jobs. Patrick Wilson said his staff has done well to make patients feel confident in the care they receive. “The team that we have is great,” he said. “We all work together to get our patients better. I think our patients can feel that when they come in the door.” The staff therapists work with clients in the facility’s gym. Patients can also take advantage of a massage therapy room and a Pilates area. In addition to the variety of ways patients can work their way back to 100 percent, Wilson said he encourages his staff to learn from one another. “We all get together and teach each other what we’ve learned,” he said. “We also have two employees who are aides, but we encourage education and they’re going to PT assistant school and should be finishing up in a year.” After seeing his business grow over the past 17 years, Wilson said he is thankful for the community support and is looking forward to providing high quality care to anyone looking to get back on their feet. “The Harbor has been nothing but great to us, and hopefully we can do the same for the Harbor,” he said.

HEALTH & BEAUTY SPOTLIGHT: Summit Pacific Medical Center With the only urgent care facility in Grays Harbor County, it’s no wonder Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma has been named the Twin Harbors’ Best Hospital for 2018. “We really strive to enhance patient experience by focusing on quality of care, low cost and ease of access. That helps drive our reputation,” said CEO Josh Martin. “And word of mouth really helps. We have patients who have a great experience, and they go on to tell their friends and family.” Summit Pacific employs 281. “We’re growing constantly to support our patients’ needs, and the expansion of the Wellness Center will put us over 300 employees in the next year,” Martin said. That center is under construction. In addition to expanding capacity for current services, the center will bring new services to the East County area, including nutrition and physical wellness. “We’re really focusing on creating access for the right treatment of our patients. We want to keep our patients healthy and not in need of acute treatment,” Martin said. He stressed that the center’s exceptional reputation would be impossible without the staff. “We have exceptional people who love their community and are really passionate about what they do ... and I think our patients recognize that,” he said. “It really starts with our people.” The hospital is at 600 E. Main St. in Elma. The urgent care clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, and the emergency department is open 24/7. Valley Cleaners has risen above other laundromats in the area with its unique set of services and a personal touch. Owners Curtis and Jan Scheelke opened their business at its current location in 1996. It offers dry cleaning, wash and fold services, alterations and repairs. Also, Valley’s laundromat is unique in that customers don’t have to lift their couch cushions to hunt for quarters. Instead, they receive a reloadable debit card that can be used only to feed the laundromat’s washers and dryers. Curtis Scheelke said taking coins out of the equation makes it easier on customers. “Many people use it because of the built-in incentive programs. We have coupons and sometimes we’ll give away a few dollars,” he said. “In addition to that, it saves me and the customer from the business of having to keep track of coins.” Scheelke said he treats each piece of clothing with care in an effort to make a difference the customer can appreciate. “My old mentor told me that if you focus on being a good dry cleaner, you won’t focus as much on your delivery routes. Later on I discovered he was right,” he said. “Smalltown businesses like this have to recycle our customers. That’s part of the challenge, keeping them coming back. “There are many reasons people make changes to their spending habits,” he added, “but we hope the quality here isn’t one of them.”

Cannabis 21 offers a wide variety of marijuana flower products in both Indica and Sativa strains, as well as a wide array of edible marijuana products.
Cannabis 21 in Aberdeen has been selected as winner of two Best of Twin Harbors awards this year: Best Marijuana Shop and Best Customer Service (Retail). This marks the third time Cannabis 21 has been named the region’s best pot shop. What is the secret to Manager Adam Bakotich’s success? “Honestly, it’s just making sure our employees are happy,” he said. “If you take care of the employees, they take care of the customers — because I can’t possibly keep all of our customers happy myself.” The store’s stated goal is “to provide customers with quality cannabis products and excellent customer service.” Bakotich also said he tries to stock products from local growers and processors as much as possible. As an example, he points to the brand “Happy Cannabis,” which operates out of Central Park and is one of the store’s bestsellers. “I am trying to make sure that people in the community feel included,” he said of selling local products. “Let’s take care of Grays Harbor. Let’s not try to be competitive with those in Seattle. We don’t need to.” Bakotich said he and his employees are thankful for the recognition, but even more so for the store’s supporters. “I want to thank the community itself,” he said. “We’re very grateful for our loyal customers and their positive feedback.” Cannabis 21, at 1000 E. That’s likely why Valu Drug has been named Best Pharmacy/Drug Store on the Twin Harbors for 2018. “We just go the extra mile for people. We order special items for people, even gifts. If they need a gift and they’ve seen it here, we try to get that for them,” said Lori Jouper, the store’s front-end manager. “It’s the fast and friendly customer service. We hear that all the time. We have everything stocked, and if somebody needs something last minute, we have that for them.” And customer service extends beyond the gifts and over-thecounter products to the pharmacy in back. Cheryl Richter is the pharmacy manager and head pharmacist. “The pharmacy staff is smart and efficient,” Jouper said. “People don’t have to wait long for their prescriptions.” Jouper explained the business as “such a close-knit employee
family.” That’s the key to the staff working so well together to provide a high level of customer service, she said. Valu Drug has 12 employees. Pharmacy technician Mary Hanson has worked there for more than 20 years. Jouper has been on the staff for 13 years. In August 2017, Valu Drug was sold to Jeff and Casey Harell. (Mark Sagen had owned the business for 25 years before selling it to them.) With the purchase the new owners are planning upgrades to the “point of sale” equipment (the cash registers). And the Valu Drug sign out front has been updated and now features Montesano High School Bulldog colors. “They’re subtle changes, but we’re really excited about them,” Jouper said. Valu Drug is located at 201 E. Pioneer Ave. in Montesano. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

What started out as a business opportunity for Jon and Kim Martin a decade ago, when state liquor sales were privatized, has turned into the largest liquor store on the Washington Coast. Now with two locations — in Ocean Shores and Montesano — Martin Bruni Liquor Stores has been named the Best Liquor/Wine Store on the Twin Harbors for the second consecutive year. Along with the multitude of selections, specials and unique items at the stores, the company also handles a growing customer base online. Their motto on Facebook: “Where liquor isn’t something we have. It’s our business!” “The reason we got into the business was because the state was getting out of the business,” Jon Martin said of the decision to bid on the Ocean Shores liquor store application. The first prospective owners had backed out, and it was being re-auctioned. “This store was actually sold twice before we got it,” Martin said of the process. At the time, he was an operations manager for McDonald’s and Kim was
working as manager of the chain’s Ocean Shores restaurant. The third time the store license came up for bid, Jon Martin drove to Seattle and was the only bidder. “And so I called Kim and said, ‘Hey, we own a liquor store.’ And she said, ‘Well what does that mean?” “We didn’t know anything about it,” Kim said. With a silent partner having the last name of Bruni, the Martin Bruni moniker was created. Eventually, the duo acquired a Montesano store. What sets Martin Bruni apart? “I would say No. 1 is that we have the variety,” he said. “But the biggest thing is that we market it. There is no other liquor store in the Harbor that does as much marketing as we do.” The business offers a wide selection of products from Northwest distilleries, Washington wines, as many as 40 microbrews, and about 270 choices of spirits. Marshall’s Garden and Pet Ltd. has been a fixture in Aberdeen for 50 years, featuring just about everything for — well, your garden and pets. This year, Marshall’s has been selected Best Gardening Supply/Nursery on the Twin Harbors, and it received second place in the Pet Supply Store category. Barbara Anderson and her husband bought the shop in 1987, and she kept it going after he died 12 years ago. The spacious and well lit shop is located at 319 S. I St. in Aberdeen. The bright green building sets it apart from its neighboring businesses. Walk in the front door, and you’re greeted with the sounds of the many types of birds they sell. They also have small mammals, like
gerbils and rabbits, and a wide selection of fish. Pet food and supplies of all kinds line the shelves just beyond the garden supplies and plants hanging just inside the entrance. On the west end of the building is an outdoor nursery with a good selection of trees and other plants. Fertilizer, soil, planters, seeds, tools, all gardening supplies can be found there. And if Marshall’s doesn’t have what you want in stock, they’ll order it for you. Their prices are comparable to the big-box gardening stores. They get a lot of repeat business, too. (One online reviewer said she had been going to the store for nearly 50 years.) Marshall’s is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

In 1925, a group of independent auto parts sellers met in Detroit to form the National Automotive Parts Association. Their mission was simple: improve the distribution of auto parts to serve the people and businesses who increasingly relied on cars and trucks for their transportation needs. In 1936, NAPA opened its first location, an existing Atlanta auto parts store purchased from an owner who thought the industry was past its peak. It wasn’t even close. Nearly a century later, NAPA continues to serve auto service professionals, doit-yourselfers and everyday drivers with quality parts and supplies to keep cars, trucks and equipment performing safely and efficiently.
