Best of Federal Way: 20 years and counting BY ANDY HOBBS Federal Way Mirror Publisher
The Mirror is proud to present the results of our 20th annual Best of Federal Way contest, which recognizes the city’s top businesses, people and places. The winners on these pages were chosen by you - the readers - through online and print ballots. Voting was held November through January, and the Mirror officially revealed the winners March 7 at an awards program at the Federal Way Community Center. Thousands of votes were cast this year in 61 categories
covering everything from the best restaurants and service providers to the best city leaders and the best teachers in elementary school, middle school and high school. We are also excited to announce that Shelley Pauls has been named the Mirror’s 2017 Citizen of the Year. Although frequently spotted behind a camera, Pauls is involved in a number community service projects such as the We Love Our City event and the Homeless Mothers and Children Initiative. Pauls was among the 2017 honorees for Citizen of the Month, and all of these honorees deserve our gratitude for working hard to make Federal Way a better place to live, work and play.
22 BEERS ON DRAFT
THANKS FOR VOTING US BEST BAR/ NIGHTCLUB AGAIN IN 2018!
“She doesn’t want the limelight,” fellow community volunteer Cheryl Hurst said of Pauls, whose story appears in this special section. “She would rather just make things happen.” Please continue to send your nominations for Citizen of the Month and let us know about local people who are making a positive difference in the community. In the meantime, remember that the winners of this year’s Best of Federal Way contest are worth celebrating and supporting all year long. On behalf of the Mirror family, thank you for reading.

Wild Waves, Dash Point State Park and Redondo pier continue to be popular attractions for Federal Way BY JESSICA KELLER email@example.com
The top three tourist attractions in Federal Way are old favorites: Wild Waves Theme and Water Park, Dash Point State Park and the Redondo pier.
Wild Waves Theme and Water Park Wild Waves Theme and Water Park is the only combined water and amusement park in Washington state. The park, which is located on 70 acres, offers numerous rides and water attractions as well as games, events, season activities and shopping and dining opportunities. The park opened solely as Enchanted Village in 1977 with nine rides. Wild Waves Water Park was built
in 1984. The parks grew over the years and now feature a number of rides and attractions. The water park has 10 features, including an activity pool and wave pool, warming tub and slides. The amusement park offers 43 features, including a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, children’s rides, carousel, midway games, rollercoasters and rides for the adventurous. Wild Waves, 36201 Enchanted Parkway S., is open from late May through early September, but in October the park is opened for Fright Fest and again in December for Holiday with Lights. Regular hours and schedules are subject to change. For more information on admission prices and park hours, go to wildwaves.com.
Dash Point State Park Dash Point State Park, 5700 SW Dash Point Road, Federal Way, is a 398-acre camping park and features a saltwater shoreline, a beach, views of the Puget Sound and miles of forested hiking and biking trails. The beach has 3,301 feet of shoreline and is home to bullhead, clams, cod, crabs, red snapper, sea birds, shellfish and starfish. According to Washington State Parks,
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO clamming is not recommended. Fishing is allowed, however, with the proper license. At high tide, anglers visit the pier for fishing, and during low tide, the sand flats are frequented by families and outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to camping, the park also offers amenities for picnics and day use. The park has two covered picnic shelters that people can reserve. There are also 20 unsheltered picnic tables available on a first-come, firstserve basis. For people who like to hike and bike, the park offers 8 miles of biking and 11 miles of hiking trails. From the parking lot, there are many trailheads from which to choose: Thames Creek (Beach) Trail, which begins on the south side; Picnic Point Trail; Heartbreak Hill; and Raven Beach Trail. All lead to the lower and upper campgrounds. From Thames Creek Trail, people can branch off to walk on other trails, such as the Old Boundary Trail, which dead ends at a bird-viewing platform. Other trails are the East Rim, Outbound, Boundary and Heart Attack Hill, to name a few. Other popular activities are the amphitheater, exploring the beach, bird watching, sailboarding and skim [ more ATTRACTIONS, page 6 ]

Community volunteer Shelley Pauls named BY HEIDI SANDERS firstname.lastname@example.org
Shelley Pauls' passion for helping the community has earned her the honor of the Mirror's 2018 citizen of the year. COURTESY BRUCE HONDA
Shelley Pauls has a passion for supporting and serving others. Her dedication to the community has earned her the honor of the Mirror’s 2017 Citizen of the Year. Pauls, who works at Sea-Tac Airport as a customer service agent supervisor for Alaska Airlines, has lived in the Federal Way area for the past 17 years and got involved in the community about five years ago after volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Through that work, Pauls got to know different people, churches and organizations. “I took a lot of time to get to know all sorts of nonprofits,” she said. Now, Pauls can connect others to organizations for which they feel passionately. ”What I want to be able to do is help people find where they want to serve,” she said. “We want everyone to experience the joy of serving and discover their God-given passions, gifts and talents.” Organizations often reach out to Pauls to ask for her help finding volunteers for various events or projects. “I send out emails once or twice a month (saying) ‘there is this need or this drive,’ ” she said. Pauls isn’t just about connecting people
with organizations. She is involved with a variety of organizations and projects herself, including cleaning up parks; construction projects; picking up litter; helping with local food, diaper and school supply drives; and planning, organizing and decorating for community events. Three years ago, Pauls spearheaded the We Love Our City event, which brings hundreds of volunteers together for a day of service each October. Dan Larson, pastor at Family Life Community Church where Pauls attends, recruited her to coordinate the annual event. “A few churches in the past had done a service day, and it just kind of fell away,” Pauls said. “He wanted to bring it back. He knows I know so many people in the community.” Cheryl Hurst, a fellow community volunteer, has worked with Pauls on a variety of projects. “She doesn’t want the limelight,” Hurst said of Pauls. “She would rather just make things happen.” Pauls can often be found on her days off from work helping in the community, Hurst said. “She is one of those people in my life that I can say you know if you call her up you aren’t going to be disappointed. She is going to help you no matter what,” Hurst [ more PAULS, page B9 ]

said. Pauls is also passionate about helping the homeless. She is involved in the Federal Way Day Center and is a committee member on the city’s Homeless Mothers and Children Initiative, where she acts as a liaison between the committee and the faith-based organizations in the community. “They knew I know the people (in the faith-based community),” she said. “That is why I can represent them and be a voice to that group.” Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell said he was grateful that Pauls accepted the invitation to be a part of HMCI. “She’s got a heart for the community, and I really felt like she would understand this mission,” he said. Pauls is a pillar in the community, Ferrell said. “I can’t say enough about her,” Ferrell said. “She’s really one of the unsung heroes of Federal Way. I have never heard her once complain. She really seeks out ways in which she can use her energies and applies herself.” Pauls can often be found behind a camera, capturing community events.
“There’s so many great stories and so many wonderful people doing so many things,” she said. “We don’t always get the story out. I love taking pictures and getting the story and sharing the story to inspire people.” While Pauls considers herself to be a cheerleader, encouraging and supporting local organizations, she said her husband, Dwight, volunteers alongside her and does much of the heavy lifting. Serving the community runs in the family. Their daughter, Laura, and sonin-law, Dustin, volunteer with the Pauls. The Pauls’ son, Aaron, is a firefighter in Los Angeles County. It is the volunteers and their desire to serve that keeps Pauls giving back to the community. “There’s such a great heart and spirit in the nonprofits and the volunteers,” she said. “I have just grown to really appreciate them all.”
Editor’s note: A version of this article ran in the Mirror on Dec. 29, 2017, when Shelley Pauls was named Citizen of the Month.
