Help Your Local Community by Shopping Small Nov. 25 marked the eighth annual Small Business Saturday, the day dedicated to supporting the local businesses that can help create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. While there are many fine construction companies that do business nationally, most home builders and remodelers – as well as the suppliers, trades and professional service providers with whom they do business – are local companies that play an important part in providing jobs, paying taxes and supporting our economy. I say Small Business Saturday should be everyday instead of celebrated one day only, especially this time of year. According to the federal Small Businesses Administration, in 2014 (the latest figures available), small businesses nationwide accounted for 63% of net new private-sector jobs created and represented 99.7% of firms with paid employees. When small businesses succeed, we all do! Small Business Saturday was created in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: more customers. In 2016, about 112 million consumers reported shopping at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, a day championed by elected officials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. With the holidays in full swing, you may not be looking for a new home from one of our members on Saturday. But in support of small businesses like ours – and to maybe find that one-of-a-kind gift not available in national chain stores, get out your wallet and spend locally. One great way to support your local builders and associates locally is by attending or sponsoring our events, joining your business with our association or utilizing our members for your new home or remodel, your support is vital to the impact on the import local work we do.
