70 Year Anniversary
Seventy years ago a group of communityminded Auburn business and professional women came together with the idea of forming a local Soroptimist Club and on October 17, 1947, Soroptimist International of Auburn was chartered. Present and former Soroptimist members gather to celebrate their 70 years of service to the community and the world.
Our current President, Louanne Decker with 60-year member and twice president Jo Cugini.
From the Beginning
Throughout its history Auburn Soroptimist has created, nurtured, and supported organizations, projects and events that support the community, the region, and the world.
Soroptimist has created, collaborated and nourished signature projects: Medic One –the first emergency medical service outside Seattle, with Rotary Washington Women’s Employment and Education location in King County Girls of Promise – a leadership program for middle school girls, with the YMCA and Auburn School District later adopted as a program by the Greater Seattle YMCA. Kids Club for children impacted by domestic violence with Domestic Abuse Women’s Network, DAWN, And their own signature project, Shelter for Sisters, a fund administered by the Auburn Food Bank to provide housing assistance to women in need, typically domestic violence victims.
Soroptimist International of Auburn has been and continues to be an organization that offers personal and professional growth for its members, contributes value to our community and personifies the Soroptimist Mission, “To improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.”
Soroptimist members participate in other community organizations & churches, serving on various boards, commissions, committees, and advisory groups, adding their experiences and perspectives to local issues. Four past Chamber of Commerce presidents were Soroptimist members.
