Five ways to help winterize your car

Check your car’s cooling system for the correct anti-freeze level. Replace windshield wipers to prevent streaking when it starts to rain and snow. Check your car’s tire pressure and condition for winter traction; otherwise, hydroplaning can occur. Make sure your vehicle has a good coat of wax; road salt can damage paint, leading to rust. Top off all your vehicle’s fluids and inspect belts for any wear and tear.

Fall/Winter Car Care

Prevent breakdowns with battery care By MetroCreative Many drivers have experienced the misfortune of getting into their vehicles only to realize their engines won’t turn over. Although there may be plenty of reasons why a car will not start, quite frequently a dead battery is to blame. Car batteries can last for five years or more when properly cared for, but many batteries wear down and become inefficient within three years of daily use. According to the UK-based company Warranty Wise, car batteries deteriorate with every charge from a vehicle’s engine. Naturally, drivers who are stranded by dead batteries wish they had done more to prevent their battery dying while they’re on the road. Certain factors might offer clues as to how much life vehicle batteries have left.

LONGER START TIME

A dying battery may cause the engine to crank, but it can be slow to start or not seem to exude a lot of power.

CRANKS BUT DOESN’T START

You may turn the key to hear the engine trying to turn over, but it won’t. Even if the vehicle eventually starts, have the battery checked and, if necessary, replaced by a mechanic.

A JUMP START HAS BEEN NECESSARY

Batteries that have required a jump or multiple jumps are on their last legs and should be replaced immediately.

DIM LIGHTS OR CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR

Batteries power the electric components in a vehicle, so dim lights could be indicative of a loss of power. Having the “check engine” light come on also can be a clue.

manufacturer suggests it should.

EXTREME TEMPERATURES

SHORT DRIVING TRIPS

According to Firestone, hot or cold temperatures can shorten a battery’s life. If you live in an extreme climate, your battery may not last as long as the

WET WEATHER DRIVING TIPS •  SLOW DOWN. Wet roadways cause tires to lose traction, as friction is reduced between the rubber and the asphalt. It’s possible to lose up to one-third of traction in the rain. To compensate, slow down to reduce sliding and stopping distances.

•  IMPROVE VISIBILITY. Turn on windshield wipers and lights when it is raining. This makes it easier to see the road and makes your vehicle more visible to other motorists. •  LEAVE MORE DISTANCE BETWEEN CARS. In addition to improving your reaction time, giving others more space can improve visibility by reducing the amount of mist or splashing caused by other vehicles. •  STICK TO DAYTIME DRIVING. If possible, when it is raining, drive only during the day. Glare from wet roadways and headlights at night can further compromise poor visibility.

Ways to maintain car value over time By MetroCreative When shopping for a new car, savvy buyers know finding the right car involves more than just finding the most comfortable or flashy vehicle. Numerous factors, including resale value, determine what makes a car the right car for a particular buyer. Various websites and automotive resources rank vehicles based on their potential resale value, and drivers can do much to ensure their cars and trucks maintain that resale value over the long term.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE EXTERIOR

Much like homes with strong curb appeal can help homeowners get the best price for their homes when those homes are on the market, vehicles that look good can make strong first impressions on prospective buyers. Address any dings or dents on the car before putting it on the market, and make sure the car gets a thorough washing and waxing prior to showcasing it for potential buyers. Upon purchasing new vehicles, drivers with their minds on maintaining resale values can park their cars or trucks in garages as often as possible to protect them from the elements. In addition, when parking in public, avoid tight parking spaces that can increase the likelihood that

other drivers will ding or dent the vehicle when entering or exiting their own cars.

PROTECT THE INTERIOR

A well-maintained interior will impress buyers on multiple levels. Pre-owned buyers might feel more comfortable buying cars with well-maintained interiors that still make them feel as if they’re buying a new vehicle. Vehicles with well-maintained interiors also give buyers the impression that sellers care about the vehicle and prioritized maintenance. Avoid eating in the car, and immediately address any spills or stains. When taking the vehicle to a car wash, spend the extra money to have the interior cleaned as well. Seat covers can help protect cloth and leather interiors from spills, stains and cracking.

KEEP MAINTENANCE RECEIPTS.

Another way to maintain resale value is to keep all maintenance receipts from the moment the vehicle is purchased. Pre-owned vehicle buyers are making substantial investments when buying pre-owned cars, and many will want to be certain they’re investing in the right cars and trucks. Documentation with regards to the vehicle’s main-

tenance can assuage any fears buyers might have and help sellers get the most money possible when putting their cars on the market.

Clean air filters are important

DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future; however, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles.

By MetroCreative Vehicle owners likely know to check fluid levels and get their cars’ oil changed, but air filters might not be at the top of their maintenance checklists. Despite being a relatively inexpensive part, air filters often go overlooked. Air filters have an important job in a vehicle, prolonging the lifespan of engines and helping cars run more smoothly and efficiently. Vehicle combustion engines operate with a mixture of fuel and air. Without oxygen, gasoline or diesel, fuels cannot burn properly and power the engine. The air filter’s job is to prevent dirt, dust and other debris from being sucked into an engine; otherwise, grime can build up and impede engine performance or cause erosion of parts under the hood. It is much more cost-effective to routinely change air filters than replace expensive engine parts. Rather than ignoring air filters until the last minute, drivers can take steps to keep filters clean and functioning at peak performance. •  Improve fuel efficiency. Clogged air filters reduce air flow to engines, resulting in an

Fall/Winter Car Care

improper ratio of air to fuel. As a result, spark plugs can be negatively affected and the engine may idle roughly or misfire. These scenarios can greatly affect fuel efficiency as well as cause engine deposits from rich fuel. To save money and trips to the fuel pump, replace filters regularly. According to GearHeads, for older cars, studies have indicated that by replacing a dirty air filter, one can improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent. •  Reduce stress on the engine. Because of the air-to-fuel mix in engines, even a mixture that is slightly off balance can affect what is going on under the hood.

That means the engine must work harder to get enough clean air into the chamber to complete the combustion cycle, said the Automotive Training Center. •  Enjoy more power. A filter that is saturated with dirt will restrict air flow. In such instances, drivers may notice a lack of power during acceleration. Replacing the filter can easily restore that pep. •  Reduce vehicle emissions. Environmental concerns are a priority for many people. By keeping the engine working properly, with the advantage of clean, unobstructed air entering the chamber, a vehicle may produce lower emissions.

•  ASHTRAYS AND CIGARETTE LIGHTERS: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. •  FULL-SIZED SPARE TIRE: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. •  CONTROL KNOBS: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. •  BENCH SEATS: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. •  WHIP ANTENNA: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete.

Fall/Winter Car Care

Get a grip on cold-weather tire traction By Matt Shackelford Les Schwab Tire Center, Sequim Winter is coming. Are you ready? How about your car? Is it “traction ready”? Do your driving needs require winter tires or are all-season tires sufficient? Having the right type of tires for your driving needs can save on those whiteknuckle experiences. With a little preparation, those times can be limited, and smooth sailing to grandma and grandpa’s house will be had by all. In the Pacific Northwest, we see all types of weather, from torrential rains to snowstorms. Having the right tires can vary for everyone. For years, the most popular choice has been the studded tire, but the studless snow tire and specific all-season tires are becoming a lot more popular. An aggressive-tread design tire with small metal studs, the studded tire is by far the best option when it comes to snow and ice. As you click-clack down the road, the open tread pattern grips away at snow while the studs bite into the slippery ice. But the convenience factor is diminished some due to the fact that they are only legal Nov. 1-March 31, thus creating the rush to change from all-season tires to studded every fall and back again in the spring. Another option that is gaining a lot of popularity is the studless snow tire. Studless tires use a combination of tread design and special rubber compounds to create traction. Like a studded tire, an aggressive tread pattern is used, but in that tread pattern is bunch of small cuts called “siping.” This siping creates a lot more biting surface on the road and is paired with a

special rubber compound that gets stickier the colder it becomes. You now have a great traction tire that is quiet and has good performance in wet, dry or snowy weather. Although it is legal to use year-round, this tire design will wear faster in the warmer months, so changing from winter to summer is advised. All-season tires have come a long way over the years in terms of traction and wear. Tread designs offer quiet, long-lasting traction used year-round in most conditions. As mentioned earlier, siping can add a lot more traction to any tire. On the studless tires, siping is built into the mold when the tire is being made. While the same is true on all-season tires, there is minimal benefit from the factory. This is why additional siping, usually during installation, is so helpful in the aid of traction, especially for our climate here in the Pacific Northwest. While not quite to the level of traction seen with studded or studless tires, having a good all-season tire with siping offers affordable, year-round traction. No matter if you drive a little or a lot or if you charge into a snowstorm or stay at home to wait it out, regularly checking over the tread depth and air pressure of your tires can alert you to any problems that may develop with your tires and help you prepare for bad-weather driving. These things can go a long way to getting you “traction ready,” and grandma and grandpa will appreciate it, too.

Safely transport trees and gifts this season With the holiday season fast approacing, people are starting to plan their budgets for gifts and potentially a decorative tree. Although it’s a joyous time of year, there are some ways to make it safer for all those involved when it comes to transportation. Here are a few tips for packing up your car with gifts and transporting a tree.

Also, secure boxes and packages in the car so they do not slide or move around. Anything that is not secured can become airborne in the event of a collision, increasing the risk for injury. Items placed on roof racks should be tightly secured so they don’t fall off and present a hazard.
