Simple Steps to Protect Your Family from Fire, Carbon Monoxide and Other Threats (StatePoint) While life can be complicated, sometimes the simple solutions are the best ones, particularly when it comes to protecting your family from household hazards. The “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries” program espouses that philosophy. For the 29th consecutive year, the campaign led by the Energizer brand and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, has reminded families of the lifesaving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide. A whopping 50 percent of home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have non-working batteries, according to the National Fire Protection Association. “A home that contains smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is only safer if these devices actually work,” says Michelle Atkinson, chief consumer officer, Energizer. “Testing your devices and updating their batteries are simple and critical steps to keeping your family comfortable and secure.”

Take this opportunity to update batteries in all your devices that enhance home security and comfort. Safety advocates say preparing your family is crucial. Make sure everyone, especially children, knows what your alarms and detectors sound like and what to do if they go off. A critical yet simple safety practice is to keep flashlights with fresh batteries at Atkinson also points out that these days; your bedside for help in finding your way out of your house and signaling for help many families rely on more than these in the event of a fire or other emergency. traditional safety devices to protect their Also, keep a stash of high-quality 9V, C, family and home. Top Down Tips for Enhancing Your Home’s Curb Appeal (StatePoint) The power of curb appeal should not be underestimated. A whopping 99 percent of National Association of Realtors members believe it’s important in attracting a buyer. Whether your home upgrades enhance form, function or both, homeowners should select projects that will improve quality of life now, and add value when it comes time to sell. To take a “top down” approach, start with the roof. You can get 68.8 percent of your cost recouped from this investment when reselling a mid-ranged priced home, according to the “2017 Cost Versus Value Study” from Remodeling Magazine. Plus, it’s a big impact project with long-lasting value, especially if you choose low maintenance, high-quality materials. For example, the composite slate and shake roof offerings at DaVinci Roofscapes are durable and impact- and fire-resistant. To view colors or customize your own blend, visit www. Don’t neglect garage doors. Styles, surface treatments, colors and other options can vary considerably, so be sure you’re boosting curb appeal when making this upgrade. For example,

the American Tradition Series at Haas Door can give your home a carriage house look. Use HaasCreate, the online visualizer tool available at to upload a photo of your home and compare options visually. Another reason to replace the garage door? It offers a 76.9 percent return on investment, according to the “Cost Versus Value” study. Add aesthetic appeal from the street while making life more comfortable indoors. Consider installing acrylic

block or decorative glass privacy windows in living spaces, bathrooms and hallways. For simple installation, consider Hy-Lite, which offers pre-framed, ready-to-install options, as well as the opportunity to retrofit some products to meet your specifications. Boost beauty by adding shutters, along with decorative trim to doors and windows. Be sure products are moisture-, insect- and rot-resistant so they don’t prove to be more trouble than they’re worth. Low maintenance polyurethane

options, such as the thousands of pieces available from Nu-Wood, replicate the look and feel of wood and are easy to install. Don’t forget to evaluate any columns you may have on your porch or front of your home. To get long-term beauty and performance, use sturdy products that are structurally certified. For example, the sturdy posts from Woodtone RealPost are manufactured from premium selected Western SPF (spruce, pines and firs) and are warranted against warping, twisting and joint separation. Accent walls are not just for interiors. Manufactured stone veneer siding can be an attractive way to boost curb appeal and add value to a home. Indeed, you can recoup an estimated 89.4 percent of the cost of this investment when reselling your home. Consider surrounding a chimney wall exterior, half wall or wainscot application. For an easy-to-install option, look at the mortarless styles and colors available by ClipStone. Make the most of your home improvement efforts with a top-down approach that offers you beauty, better living and bang for your buck.

Six Ways to Bring Warmth into Your Home this Fall (StatePoint) With the shorter days and cooler nights of fall can come the urge to hibernate. But first prepare yourself and your home for the season with these cozy and warm accents that will make time spent indoors cozier. 1. Incorporate Metallic Décor. While you’re breaking out the pumpkins, cornstalks and cornucopias, take a different approach this season and incorporate copper or brass accents. These metallic items will elevate décor, and the orange and yellow tones will complement the changing leaves outside. Try picking out a unique candelabra or vase or small decorative pieces to style the room. 2. Makeover the Fireplace. Fireplace season is on the horizon, so start thinking about new ways to make it the focal point of a room. Try painting it with a subtle whitewash for a look that will instantly revive brick and brighten the space. Before you get started, prep the fireplace by scrubbing brick with a wire brush to remove any residue. Then, tape off any areas you don’t want painted with a quality painter’s

tape like FrogTape brand painter’s tape, to prevent paint bleed and achieve professional-looking results. 3. Layer, Layer, Layer. Bare floors can make your home feel chilly. Warm up a space by layering area rugs on hardwood floors or to an already carpeted area. Not only will this add color and texture to a room, the extra cushioning will ensure feet avoid the cold, so you can keep your slippers tucked away.

4. Update the Guest Bedroom. With the holidays on the horizon, there’s no better time to give your guest bedroom a cozy update. Surprise overnight guests by painting the room a moody green or blue that is on trend and sets a relaxing tone. Don’t forget to incorporate little touches like books or a plant on the nightstand to make them feel at home. 5. Update Window Coverings. Heavy drapes keep out drafts and make a room feel luxurious. Switch

out summer sheers for curtains with a heavier weight, or layer drapes for an elegant look. 6. Don’t Underestimate the Power of White Paint. Vibrant doesn’t always have to mean using bold colors. Make a space feel brand new again by repainting wood trim a crisp white color. It may seem like a tedious task, but with a little effort, you can completely transform a room. Start by filling in any imperfections, sanding and cleaning the surfaces to be painted. Then, you’ll want to tape off the wall next to the trim so your handiwork looks like that of a professional. For this job you’ll want a quality product like FrogTape painter’s tape, treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, to help ensure your work looks professional and allows you to achieve the sharpest paint lines possible. When painting trim, opt for a semi-gloss paint to make elements stand out. For different project inspirations, visit Grab your pumpkin spice latte and start adding little touches like these to your home, for a cozy and stylish season.

Alarming Survey Shows People’s Poor Home Maintenance Habits (StatePoint) Proper home maintenance can preserve your home, while saving you money and headaches in the future. However, a new survey from Erie Insurance conducted by Harris Poll reveals Americans have alarmingly poor upkeep habits. “By overlooking common DIY projects, homeowners are not only putting themselves at risk for major financial loss, but also are exposing their families to dangerous hazards,” says Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager at Erie Insurance.

Inspect Your Roof Replacing or repairing a roof is one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have and the need to do it often comes without warning. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, according to HomeAdvisor, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000 depending on certain factors. But the Erie Insurance survey found that nearly one in four homeowners (23 percent) admits they never inspect their roof or have it inspected only if there is a problem. Even scarier, nearly a third (27 percent) of those

known as seepage, is often not covered under your home insurance policy.

who own a house either mistakenly believe their insurance will pay for damage that occurs to their roof over time, such as through normal wear and tear or have no idea how their insurance works regarding this type of damage. Insurance generally only covers things like roof damage from unexpected storms.

Unclog Gutters and Downspouts Nearly one out of four homeowners (24 percent) say they never care for their gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to flow down the sides of a home and pool around its foundation, often leading to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also

Clean Out Dryer Exhaust One in five homeowners (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. Unfortunately, the most common cause of dryer fires is failure to do a thorough cleaning. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dryers cause roughly 15,500 home structure fires, 29 deaths, 400 injuries and $192 million in direct property loss each year.

Check the Furnace Only 36 percent of homeowners have their furnaces inspected and serviced at least once a year. According to NFPA, U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 56,000 home fires involving heating equipment. These fires resulted in annual losses of 470 civilian deaths, 1,490 civilian injuries, and $1 billion in direct property damage per year. Protect your family and your investment with proper maintenance, and if you’re unsure what your policy covers, contact your insurance agent. They’ll work with you to determine what you need to be protected.

DIY Projects to Improve Your Outdoor Living Space (StatePoint) Are you taking advantage of your yard and maximizing its potential as a living space? All you need is a bit of time and energy to transform your yard into the perfect place to spend time with family and friends. “There are so many projects homeowners can do themselves to increase the appeal and usability of their outdoor living space,” says Doug Scott, landscape designer and blogger behind “Redeem Your Ground.” A new, free six-part how-to video series from Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, can help. “Done-in-a-Weekend” offers

DIY projects that empower almost any homeowner to improve their yards and enjoy the payoff of their work for years to come. To get you started, here are a few ideas from the online series.

Get Cozy

After laying the pavers, fill the joints with sand and install a soldier course along the border to tie the walkway together. Finally, compact the entire walkway so it’s level with adjoining surfaces, eliminating trip hazards.

A portable fire pit is a cozy gathering space that’s simple and cost-effective to create. First, select a location and obtain any necessary building or fire permits. It’s best if the fire pit is set at least 10 feet away from your home, fence and other manmade structures. The space should be about 15- to 18-feet in diameter, which allows for five to six feet for the

stone or brick to create the floor of the pit. Then, select seating and other accessories to give this space the same cozy feel as any room of your home.

Connect the Dots Walkways and paths can enhance the beauty and functionality of your yard, tying together outdoor spaces. Gravel and mulch are cost-effective materials that are easy to install. To kick it up a notch, use paving stones, which are more durable and less likely to cause drainage problems. Before starting, call 811 to have all utilities located and marked. Then, measure and mark the locations of your walkways. Use a sod cutter to remove existing sod and make room for the walkway to be installed. Next, level and prepare the area.

Layer Up Select and install plants that vary in form, size, color and leaf structure to help you create the dream outdoor space. Seek plant varieties well-suited for your growing conditions. Note, this will change as you move around the yard, as sun exposure varies. Also, when planning, keep in mind that plants will be larger once they mature. To complete these projects and all standard yard care maintenance, be sure to use high-quality equipment designed to help you work faster, not harder. For more project ideas and videos, visit WeAreExmark. com/diy. With the right tools and inspiration, you can make more of your outdoor spaces, simply and costeffectively.

less options, such as the Hepburn from Hunter Fan Company. Its mid-century, modern flair is complemented by light and airy colors, combined with a brass finish.

A New Color Scheme

Revamp a tired space with new and inexpensive accessories. A new duvet cover, vibrant pillows, or a statement floor rug can help to refresh a room without a high price tag. Adding in mixed metal items can add texture to an otherwise boring countertop, while positioning items in groups of threes can create a visually pleasing setup. Go shopping in your own home. You can also switch things up by using objects from around the house, to make a space new again. Decorating a built-in bookshelf with jars, candles, pottery and those favorite items you just can’t find the right place for, can make your room feel new without having to purchase anything at all. More design tips and inspiration can be found at Updating a room doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take months to complete. Mini-makeovers that focus on smaller details can make all the difference.

Looking at the same wall color day after day can be uninspiring. Consider a new color scheme to change the dynamic of your space. Blue hues are shown to create a calming, tranquil effect, making them the perfect choice for a baby’s nursery or spa-like bathroom. Pastels are also a fun way to stimulate the same soft, calming effect of blue, and their less saturated nature creates a unique twist. Color is also a great way to explore new looks. Both coastal and farmhouse styles are easy to accomplish through a neutral color palette, giving you plenty of opportunities to incorporate your unique style accents.

Find a Focal Point When choosing a design aesthetic, many find inspiration from an accessory, like a piece of artwork or textile. However, highly functional objects that feature great design can also serve as your muse. One such example is a ceiling

fan. Its elevated, and often central location, can serve as a stylish focal point, while enhancing comfort. Whether you decide to incorporate a fan that blends into the existing style or opt for a statement piece, the addition can help put a new spin on your room. Consider stylish, yet time-

Home Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts (StatePoint) Now and then, every home gets to the point at which a quick tidy-up here and there just isn’t cutting it anymore. You take a look around, notice all of the surfaces that have gone untouched for far too long, then sigh as you pick a day dedicated to cleaning from top to bottom. Lifestyle and parenting blogger Ari Adams of Love, Peace and Tiny Feet is sharing some of her top rules to follow to keep both a clean house and your sanity.

Do Make a plan. Clear your schedule and know exactly how much time you are going to have. Then, prioritize. What projects need the most attention? What are the tasks that need to be tackled to get that project done? Make a checklist and stick to it. The more organized and detailed you are going into it, the less distracted you will become. Plus, you’ll benefit from the confidence boost you get from putting a big check across an item on your to-do list.

Get comfortable. Choose an outfit that is comfortable and functional for a day of hard work. Put on your favorite music and get settled. You’re not going anywhere today, so you may as well enjoy it.

Use the right product for the job. Armed with the proper cleaning tools, chores get done faster. Choose products that do the hard work for you. For example, using Mean Green, a cleaner that’s both all-purpose and heavy duty,

means you can use one product on all kinds of messes, whether it’s a sticky spill in the microwave or mold on the patio furniture.

Don’t Take unnecessary breaks. Stick to your schedule. Maintaining motivation is key, and it will become more difficult with every minute you stop to relax.

Distract yourself. Plan scheduled breaks but avoid other temptations. If your phone is the root of most of your unwanted

breaks, leave it in another room. While some enjoy the television for background noise, others may find themselves getting pulled in for a binge session. If that’s you, leave the television off. Learn more about products that can help you power through your chores by visiting www.meangreen. com. Cleaning the house top to bottom can feel daunting. 3 Beautiful Ways to Add Pops of Color to Your Kitchen range or hood. The brand, known for professional quality custom Italian appliances for the home, offers ranges in six standard American sizes, as well as a “city-sized” 24” option. Both single and double oven options are available, as well as dual fuel and all gas connection choices. What’s more, you can further customize the legs and accents of your appliance in various finishes and looks. Another brand offering brilliant color options such as gloss red and light blue is Verona, which offers appliances that use exclusive cooking technology to minimize fuel and energy consumption, and provide safe and efficient cooking.

(StatePoint) If your kitchen is bland or boring, it’s time for an update. Consider those home projects that add pops of color and beauty, inspiring you to do your best culinary work. Here are three beautiful ways to add new hues to any kitchen.

Natural Color For a verdant, fragrant and useful pop of color, grow an herb garden right in your kitchen. From lavender to basil to chives, you can brighten your kitchen with natural colors, while adding some zest to salads, stews and more. Evaluate your kitchen for direct sunlight to determine the ideal size and shape of your garden, then get creative. Many people choose to create a hanging wall garden. Others prefer a tiered counter for the floor or pots for the countertop.

Functional Focal Point Consider creating a focal point in your kitchen in an eye-catching color that adds vitality to the space. One great way to do this is by focusing on the heart of every kitchen -- the range. Experts point out that black finishes in the kitchen have reemerged as a trending design element this year. So if you do choose black, you

Brilliant Backsplash

may prefer to emphasize this selection with a gloss finish, which can add a layer of elegance, drama and sophistication to the kitchen. Standard colors are offered everywhere, but for something more unexpected, seek out brands that also offer customization in addition to classic choices like gloss black, such as ILVE. Through its Custom Color Program, you can select one of 213 RAL Classic colors for your

For a cohesive look, consider the focal point of your kitchen and build out from there with a beautiful backsplash. Backsplashes are stylishly versatile and nearly any kitchen benefits aesthetically from the addition of one. Choices of materials include mosaic glass tiles, marble and metal -- the possibilities are nearly endless – giving you a lot of flexibility in color and texture. The kitchen is the center of the home, where families make not only meals, but memories, too. Add beautiful bursts of color to the space to make it a place you love to spend time.

How to Optimize Your Home Office (StatePoint) The old 9-to-5 isn’t what it used to be. As more companies embrace telecommuting, a growing number of employees are finding that even in the professional realm, there’s no place like home. Here’s how to set up a home office for success. • Commission floor plans. It’s a good idea to have plans drawn up by an architect. Knowing your exact square footage has tax-savings implications: If your home office is your principal workplace, you may qualify for a home office tax deduction (for what the IRS calls “business use of your home”) based on the overall area of that space. Plus, an architect may be able to see beyond walls to find potential spatial configurations you might not have considered. • Define your workspace. Working from home may be an escape from the monotony of cubicle land, but it’s still important to define your workspace. If it’s not possible to turn an existing room into your office, consider using an uncluttered portion of your basement, attic or garage. A tax deduction applies only to space used

exclusively as a home office, so simply putting a desk in your living room doesn’t make you eligible, nor will it prevent distractions. • Get comfortable. Don’t just grab an extra dining room chair. Chair designs have improved thanks to ergonomic research over the last half century. Choose one that will keep your posture vertical and your mind sharp. • Get lit. Ideally, your home office will have at least one window, but also invest in a swing-arm desk

lamp to provide ample illumination for concentrated tasks. • Clear clutter. Avoid toppling stacks of documents and make the recycling bin your new best friend. A small filing cabinet should be able to hold all your records, and many home furnishings can be repurposed if a filing cabinet feels too corporate. • Grow something. Not only are there health benefits associated with keeping plants indoors, they’ll be there when you need to take a

break. A little gentle pruning can prove meditative, and can be a good way to refocus. • Keep a schedule. Online newsfeeds and day-to-day housework can be distracting. Approach working at home with the same level of professionalism you’d bring to an office setting. Display a clock and wall calendar for visual reminders of deadlines. • Communicate. Responding promptly to emails and calls lets co-workers know that you’re reliable. Substitute face-to-face time with FaceTime (or another videoenabled communication service). Thanks to such technology, you can share space with co-workers a continent away. • Take breaks. Anyone familiar with water cooler chatter knows that offices are highly social. That’s an aspect of your day that can feel like it’s missing. So step outside every few hours; wave to your neighbor or walk to a coffee shop. FALLING IN LOVE WITH FALL!!!! Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest we still have several weeks to enjoy our gardens. Here are some ideas of what to do now to reap huge benefits in the winter months ahead.

Salad Fixins' for fall and winter Salad greens can take as little as 20 days from planting to harvest, and radishes can be harvested in 24 days from seed. There is plenty of time to sow a salad garden! These frost-tolerant veggies can not only take a frost, but they'll be sweeter for it, and keep on growing! Spinach, carrots, leeks, collards, and other frost-tolerant veggies can even be overwintered in our areas with just a little extra protection. We have a great selection of salad greens ready to plant now.

What A Pansy! I do not understand how an expression implying that someone is weak ever got associated with this hardy and robust flower with the happy face. Winter pansies and violas can bring color and joy to the coolest and dreariest of winter days. Ideal for fall gardens, pansies offer a colorful display for almost six months – in the fall when they

are planted, in the winter during a stretch of sunny days and again in spring! Winter pansies may be planted anytime starting in September and continuing through October. Planting early in the fall will help to insure that your plants get well established to provide even more blooms to enjoy throughout the otherwise drab months of winter.

Wow Me This Winter! Looking for some winter color in your garden? Callicarpa Profusion, or BEAUTY BERRY is here to fill the bill. The medium size shrub is very unassuming and almost disappears

in the summer landscape. But by mid fall and winter it leaps to life and commands center stage with a profusion of bright purple berries covering the shrub through the winter. This is a real show stopper. Now in stock at Branches.

This Fall, Think Spring Plant flower bulbs this fall, like tulips or daffodils and then plant mums and pansies right over the bulbs. The bulbs will bloom as usual in spring, and the mums and pansies will give you color this fall.

Where to Plant Pansies These versatile blooms can be used in many different parts of your garden or landscape. Add a graceful drift of single-colored pansies or a mass of mixed colors to brighten a border, under a tree or along a fence, pathway, deck or wall. Try tucking single plants in garden beds around perennials and shrubs that have finished blooming to brighten up an otherwise dreary section of the landscape and to help mask older, spent growth. Pansies also do well in containers placed on a deck or patio or next to the entrance of your home to greet your guests with welcoming color. With so much color to enjoy in so many ways, fall and winter pansies should be a staple of any garden and will bring great gardening joy to the landscape even during colder, dreary months.

This is a great way to get more color in your garden and you won’t have to plant again until it’s time to plant summer annuals. An easy way to get gardening done fro 2 seasons at once.
