More than 1,400 readers responded to our annual online survey this year, submitting nominations in approximately 80 categories. Look within these pages and you’ll see the people and places that survey respondents say are standouts in various services, food, shopping,

entertainment, fitness and sports, public servants, and best aspects of living in North Kitsap. The nominees help make living here a special experience. They deserve a shout out, as do the readers that participated in our annual survey.

Here’s a staff list of some unique and unusual sites to see in Poulsbo. visible in one of the earliest photographs of Poulsbo, taken from the bay. The building was Hostmark’s General Store then, now home to Thor’s Hammer and Needle Tattoo.

The artwork on display in the window — paintings, skateboard decks — is worth seeing. And try a cup of joe at an associated business next door, Viking Brew.

JFK Jr. dined here: A table at That’s A Some Italian Ristorante, on Anderson Parkway on the Poulsbo waterfront, has a display remembering two of the restaurant’s most famous customers, John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette. The couple dined here on Aug. 18, 1994, according to the credit card receipt on display. (JFK Jr. ordered the halibut in lemon-tarragon cream sauce; Carolyn ordered chicken picatta. They had a bottle of Pouilly-Fuisse wine with their

dinner.)

Kennedy, his wife and her sister were killed when their plane, piloted

by Kennedy, crashed into the Atlantic near Martha’s Vineyard on July 16, 1999. At the time, Kennedy — publisher of George magazine and a former New York City assistant district attorney — was reportedly considering a run for public office.

Thank you, Mrs. Julesberg: Her “Dick and Jane” grade-school reading primers helped millions of children learn to read. Pay homage to author/educator Elizabeth Rider Montgomery Julesberg by visiting her grave at Poulsbo Cemetery on Caldart Avenue. According to her obituary, Julesberg (1902-1985) was teaching first graders in Los Angeles when she decided a better reading primer was needed. The “Dick and Jane” series was born.

Julesberg moved to Washington state in 1946 and continued writing.

“Her published works included fiction, nonfiction and drama,” her obituary states. “Several of her plays won national awards, and she also won National Presswomen and Penwomen awards.”

Take a peek from this peak: Scale this peak and you’ll be rewarded

with one of the finest views in town of Liberty Bay and the Olympics. It’s a steep climb (about 40 degrees) but it’s a short one (maybe 900 feet). It’s the Moe Street Trail, which leads from 3rd Avenue to 4th Avenue above.

It’s perhaps the most unique trail in Poulsbo because of its length, elevation, and reason for existence; city Parks Director Mary McCluskey said the neat little landscaped trail is an easement for a utility line.

Brew City USA: If you enjoy craft beer, and meeting the people who make it, you’ll want to visit Rainy Daze Brewery on Bovela Lane (off Viking Avenue); Slippery Pig on Anderson Parkway in downtown Poulsbo; Sound Brewery on Viking Avenue (the brewery and tasting room are located at two sites); Valholl Brewery on 3rd Avenue, near City Hall. And nearby: Downpour Brewing, 10991 Highway 104, Kingston; and Hood Canal Brewery, 26449 Bond Road NE, Kingston

may have looked in the mid-1800s; a Suquamish man wearing a woven cedar hat, fishing in a stream at the place the Suquamish people knew as tcu tcu lats, or place of the maples; a woman wearing traditional Norwegian clothing (the artist said he patterned her after Lagertha of the series “Vikings”).

A large driftwood salmon sculpture, installed on a hill at Fish Park, is a commanding reminder of the species that depend on the estuary for life.

Nearby, on Viking Avenue and Lindvig Way — wait, is that a German opera character? No, it’s Mark Gale’s sculpture, “Norseman,” with horned helmet that is commonly viewed as authentically Viking.

Downtown, a more accurate sculptural depiction of a Viking — titled “Viking” — is installed at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park.

The small, handsome bronze was dedicated to the memory of the late Maurice Lindvig, the 14th mayor of Poulsbo (1969-1976). Nearby in the

park is noted artist Lisa Stirrett’s “Guardian Stone,” which was inspired by the “Swords of the Rock,” a 33-foot sculpture on the southern coast of Norway that commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, when King Harald Fairhair united Norway under one crown.

On Front Street, Mayo murals depict a Norwegian woman against a mountainous backdrop (Liberty Bay Bakery building), and Viking ships underway (Boehm’s Chocolates building).

“Octopus,” greets visitors to the SEA Discovery Center, a place of learning about the local marine environment.

A short walk through history: County Road 59 Trail, located off Viking Avenue on Liberty Bay, has a unique place in Poulsbo history. It’s the last remnant of an old logging road that dates back almost a century, when logging and fishing were the town’s dominant industries. It’s a cool place — literally. Enjoy the shade of trees and the sweet fragrance of Nootka

roses and berries.

Urban escapes: Fish Park on Lindvig Way, between Bond Road and Viking Avenue, consists of 40 acres on the Liberty Bay Estuary and Dogfish Creek. The park is habitat to native animals, fish and plants, and features 1.5 miles of trails, a boardwalk and viewing platforms. A trail under the Lindvig Way bridge leads to Nelson Park.

The south fork of Dogfish Creek spring from the ground at Wilderness Park, 11.56 acres of forested trail.

The spring picks up stormwater runoff as it courses under Highway 305 to Centennial Park and through Poulsbo Village to the main stem of Dogfish Creek on Bond Road. The trail head is on Caldart Avenue across from North Kitsap High School.

Forest Rock Hills Park, on the north end of 12th Avenue NE off Forest Rock Hills Road, is 3.1 acres of forested trails.
