Sequim Irrigation Festival 2017

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 • 3

Welcome!

The 122nd Sequim Irrigation Festival’s theme is “122 Skies of Blue.” As Washington’s longest continuous festival, we are continually working on ways to keep this local celebration exciting. “Crazy Callen” Weekend’s Family Fun Day, which started in 2014, proved to be very successful and will continue in 2017. This first weekend of the festival starts with the Crazy Daze Breakfast Friday morning and continues with the First Friday Art Walk, which now provides a patron preview at the Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. The Family Fun Day, Kids Parade and Driftwood Show round out the weekend. The Logging Show continues on Saturday along with the Family Fun Run, Hot Rods & Harleys Car Cruzz and Show ‘n Shine, and the best parade on the peninsula: the Grand Parade. As citizens of this amazing city, we invite you to experience the wonderful opportunities of our small town and celebrate with us during the first two weeks of May. An event of this magnitude is made possible because of the endless hard work of the festival board of directors, the countless volunteer hours by individuals and local service clubs, the businesses that recognize the value of community service and the continuous support of our sponsors. This recipe of teamwork truly makes this a “hometown” community event. Don’t forget to pick up a memento of your time enjoying the festival. We have pins, buttons, note cards, T-shirts and sweatshirts to help you remember your time in Sequim. Festival merchandise is available at the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce Visitor information Center and Grocery Outlet. Let the festivities begin! Deon Kapetan, Sequim Irrigation Festival Director

from the Mayor 122 Skies of Blue!

Welcome to the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuous running festival in the state of Washington. All of that blue sky makes Sequim one of the driest places in western Washington and sets the stage for the festival. The Irrigation Festival marks the opening of the irrigation ditches that turned this arid valley into fertile farmland. From the very beginning the community chose to commemorate this achievement by gathering together, sharing food and fun, and relishing in this innovative accomplishment. That was in 1896! The world and Sequim have changed a lot since then, but gathering the community together to celebrate is still an inherent part of the fabric of Sequim. The festival has shone a bright spotlight on the City of Sequim throughout the years with award-winning floats, a dedicated royal court and recognition as the Northwest’s “Best Small Town Celebration.” On behalf of the City Council, I would like to thank the tireless community volunteers and local sponsors that keep this event going year after year. We appreciate all of their hard work and energy. Festival organizers have planned a full week of fun activities for the entire family. We hope you are able to take part in all of the excitement! Dennis Smith, Mayor City of Sequim

The 122nd Irrigation Festival is approaching and I already know it’s going to be one for books! The 2017 Royalty Court includes Princess Abby Norman, Princess Emily Straling, Princess Alison Cobb and myself, Queen Karla Najera. We are so excited to watch our beloved small town come together and celebrate history once again, as we keep our title as the longest running festival in Washington. We would love for everyone to come join us in various festivities May 5-14. The operetta this year is “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and it’s put on by the students at Sequim High School and you may see appearances of Princesses Abby and Alison throughout the show (they say it’s a must see!). Bring all your favorite people to “Family Fun Day” and you just might experience a day of fun with your family (I’m trying to be funny). We also have the Arts and Crafts Fair, Log Show, Car Show and our Grand Parade! Photo courtesy Sequim Gazette All these festivities are absolutely wonderful but my favorite part of the festival always has been the Carnival because of the ENORMOUS and delicious elephant ears. Putting on the festival takes a lot of work and this is why I would like to say thank you to everyone who has put in time to support this celebration of irrigation (it rhymes!). The Princesses and I can’t wait to see all of you and we promise you will have a great time! — Queen Karla Isabella Najera

Logo Designer

Laura Friedkin was the winner of the logo design contest with her design for the 2017 theme of “122 Skies of Blue.” Friedkin has more than 20 years experience in graphic design, taking her natural art skills and putting them to use as an assistant to an art director and then as a graphic designer working on packaging design. In Sequim, she has continued to hone her artistic talents and enjoys spending time working on design, photography, painting, beading and other crafts. Friedkin was the designer of the logo design for seven previous Irrigation Festival themes. She and her husband spend their time enjoying the natural beauty of Sequim and the surrounding area, hiking, walking the beaches and photographing the natural splendor of the Olympic Peninsula. Friedkin enjoys the small-town warmth of Sequim and the rich traditions of the community and she looks forward to being a part of the 122nd Irrigation Festival and all of its many activities.

She makes a tradition of setting out chairs for her family and friends early in the morning of the parade on the north side of Washington Street by Third Avenue where the former Fred Bower car lot once operated. “(The festival) is just as important now as it was then because it’s about family. It brings families together,” she said. Hendrickson worked as a waitress but mostly focused on being a mom and grandma. She is a charter member of Sequim Bible Church and she learned to fly an airplane. She continues to enjoy sewing and crafting.

He’s proud to have served the city when city councilors agreed to purchase the property for Carrie Blake Park and served as chairman of the planning commission when the city purchased the property that later became the Clallam Transit Center. He fondly remembers the festival from his time as a boy with one of his earliest memories of him riding on the queen’s float as a page in the first grade. Topness moved a few times after Sequim, living in Clallam Bay, Discovery Bay and Philomath, Ore., before coming back. She worked at Patty Lovala’s restaurant and gift shop for several years before retiring at the age of 81 at Gary Lange’s Sunnyside Mini-Storage. She’s served in the American Legion for 60-plus years and served as treasurer and poppy chairman for several years. She also was active in Eastern Star through the Sequim Masonic Lodge. She enjoys reading, crosswords and puzzles.

Being a pioneer is important to her, Topness said, and she hopes the tradition goes on and on. “There’s no place I’d rather be than in Sequim, Topness said.

Ron Parrish

Ron Parrish was born in 1925 in Selah, WA to Henry and Leona Parrish. He moved to Sequim in 1937 and graduated from Sequim High School in 1942. He married his wife Jeanette 67 years ago and they have ďŹ ve children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Parrish worked as a dairy farmer, logger and trucker under his different businesses Parrish

They did some traveling and lived in Arizona for some winters, but Parrish said “Sequim is pretty hard to beat.â€? He ďŹ nds it to be one of the healthiest places he’s ever been. “My dad used to say in order to have cemeteries in Sequim they have to shove bodies in there.â€? This year will be Parrish’s ďŹ rst time in the festival’s grand parade but he was honored at the logging show in 2014 as an honorary logger. He thinks the festival is nice for the area and celebrates Sequim’s origins.

Vern Fosket, 57, was born in Everett and raised in Lake Stevens. He and his family moved from Port Orchard 19 years ago so he could lead the band programs at Sequim Middle and High Schools. He and his wife Lynn have three daughters and two grandchildren. His earliest memory of Sequim is taking his girls to the Olympic Game Farm. Since Fosket’s been in Sequim, he’s led performances at Disneyland, the Macy’s Parade in Seattle, Husky Band Day, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, the state solo and ensemble competition and many, many more places and events. Despite being here only 19 years, he’s marched through the parade close to 30 times with the South Kitsap All-District marching band and some years twice with both the Sequim Middle School and High School bands. Fosket said he’s marched through a lot of parades but Sequim’s is always well-attended start to ďŹ nish. “It’s nice being the hometown band knowing everyone along the parade route from former students to parents,â€? he said. When not leading the local bands, Fosket loves to hike, bike, and he leads music at Olympic View Church of God.

The First Irrigation Festival Courtesy of Soroptimist International of Sequim

Bringing irrigation from the Dungeness River to the brown and parched prairie began as a dream of four pioneer settlers who were visionaries of their time. D.R. Callen had moved to Sequim from an irrigated area in Colorado and he convinced James R. Grant, H. Hucksford and Captain Thomas Jones that “water was wealth.” Together they set out to persuade their neighbors to go along with the idea. The skeptics called them “crazy” and said that water could not be made to run uphill; but there were those who believed. On July 20, 1895, a group of about 20 people held the first meeting of the Prairie Ditch. Incorporation papers were signed Nov. 18, 1895, and the hardy pioneers worked all winter long building the ditch and flume. Money was scarce and the surveyor was paid partly in potatoes. Everyone gave what they could and the women cooked for the workers. Even the children helped by carrying water, running errands and tromping clay into the gravel. Finally, the following spring it was time for the “big day.” On May 1, 1896, the residents of the Dungeness Valley and surrounding communities came by wagon, on horseback and on foot to witness the opening of the headgate for the first time. Edgar B. Wicklander in “The Grants of Sequim Prairie,” gives a detailed account of that first celebration: (synopsis) “The day dawned fair and

warm for May. The Grants arrived at the picnic grounds while the dew was still on the grass. Other families arrived about the same time, driving their wagons from the nearby Sequim prairie settlement. Those from some close farms walked the dry roads. Later in the morning groups arrived from Port Angeles. “The Bicycle Club of Port Townsend chartered a tug boat for the trip to Port Williams. They docked at 11 a.m. and some rode their bicycles to Sequim while others loaded their vehicles into wagons. The shining cycles amazed the young people of Sequim, but the dress of the ‘city folk’ was of interest to everyone. The men dressed in turtle neck sweaters, knickers and caps and the ladies wore ‘very daring’ short skirts, almost up to their shoe tops. Their outfits were completed with shirtwaists, jackets and perky hats and the Sequim farm kids thought they all looked rather funny. Long wooden tables had been set up and covered with hams, roasts of lamb and pork, salads, breads and chicken cooked every way possible. Each family had brought enough food for themselves and one or two other families, and no one went away hungry. “At the appointed time a group of men who had built the ditch went up to the upper end to turn the waters of the river into the new flume. As usual things did not go according to plan. When the headgate was raised the water refused to turn. Undaunted, the men located a wagon load of clay and picked up a wagon full of kids. They dumped the clay at the head of the flume in the gravel and told the kids to jump in. The kids got in to the river’s edge in their bare feet and tromped the clay into the gravel until the water flowed over it into the flume. It wound its way, the muddy water slowly following the flume, then into the dusty prepared big ditch, and finally all the way to the furrow, right into the picnic area. The skeptics who had said that water couldn’t run uphill were at last convinced.”

Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty 2017

Karla Najera

Sponsored by Sunny Farms Country Store

Karla Najera, as a small child, moved a lot with her family. Her mother always encouraged her to be bold and different. Moving also helped build the creative side of her, which is what she loves most about herself. She finds she is able to adapt to new things easily and has a wild imagination. For example, teaching all of her cousins a game she created, she called “zombie” just so they all didn’t die of boredom. Over the years she has taught herself to play guitar and piano, and knitting is a challenge she is still working on. She absolutely loves animals and shares her home with two dogs, Luna and Melody, along with her two cats, Chiky and Petey. Her platform is “Celebrating Diversity.” With her Royals, she would like to visit local elementary schools and give a small presentation that would include fun activities which let the students express what makes them unique. As a Latina with dark skin and black hair, she knows how it feels to feel different. Accepting and respecting diversity is very complex. She feels it’s the only way to create a positive environment not just for children, but for people of all ages. Her future plans include finishing up her pre-requisites for the nursing program at Peninsula College and then transferring to the University of Washington for it’s midwife program. Family has been the most important aspect in her life and she feels helping others with the expansion of their family would be beautiful. She is the daughter of Carolina and Rijoberto Najera.

Alison Cobb

Sponsored by RE/MAX Prime

Alison Cobb says for as long as she can remember, she’s either attended or marched in every Irrigation Festival parade. She was always captivated by the girls on their float. She knew then she wanted to be a Royal more than anything. She says to have the opportunity to represent the wonderful community of Sequim again, as she did when she was fortunate to be an Ambassador to Sequim’s sister city Shiso, Japan, would be amazing. Her parents instilled in her the love of music, which evolved into her passion for musical theater. Cobb was an operetta officer for two years and is now involved in her fifth operetta at SHS. This led her to her plan of attending a four-year university, majoring in business management and marketing and minoring in theater. Ultimately, Cobb plans to become a casting agent to help other people who share her passion find their place in the community of theater or film. At Sequim Community Church, where she volunteered with pre-K children as a music leader as well as a leader for various camps and programs, Cobb was given the opportunity to start acting and singing when she was 8 years old. She’s had numerous roles varying from a singing sheep to the Virgin Mary in Christmas pageants over the years. “Being a Royal is an amazing opportunity to contribute to your community; my platform will be “Adopt-A-Grandparent” which will be a bonding experience with the royalty
