Is a writing task for Grade Three A poster with their hand drawn art Depicts the place that fills their heart Some write stories, perhaps a poem About the place that they call home Each child’s tale, it’s plain to see Is about their family

They talk about their favorite merit Parents, siblings, a dog, a ferret The things that make them always smile The things they love, the things worthwhile Each home is precious, the bonds are strong Each tells the child that they belong

It gives them courage as they roam To have the foundation of family, home

We’ve looked them over, each one delightful Choosing the best is a task most frightful But choose we must, the stories best Which ones shine out among the rest We thank the teachers and students all Who put their hearts into the call To tell the world about the place That gives them strength, and peace, and grace

What My Home Means To Me 2017

Every year we have a lot of discussion in deciding which students have

done great work and whose pictures should get the prizes. This year the judges remarked that there was one picture they really liked and it was too bad that we did not have an “Honourable Mention” category. We don’t, but we did have space on the cover this year. A big Thank You to Marshall Pettit in Mrs. Anderson’s class at Hamilton Elementary for such a nice picture and story.

The 1st through 3rd Place winners in each class receive gift cards to Swain’s General Store for $50, $30, and $20 respectively. The 1st Place winners from the classes are then judged and the 1st through 3rd Place Grand Prize winners are given gift cards for $100, $75 and $50, respectively.

“My home is special to me because we have 1st nacho/movie night. On Place nacho/movie nights, I Grand Prize! help mama spread the chips and put on the cheese and fake meat, while Alice (my little sister) helps daddy find a movie to watch. Then, Alice and I set the coffee table (We eat at the coffee table on movie nights) with plates, napkins, and little bowls of salsa. After that, we run around the house with the dogs so they won’t pee pee or poo poo on the carpet. Finally, we wait for daddy to set up the projector so we can eat our machos and watch the movie.”

Youth of the Year – Cody Mireau

PORT ANGELES - Ten years old. In foster care.

His world - his daily life as he knew it - gone.

You could see it in his eyes.

He felt unanchored in a sea of fears and doubt . . . until he walked into the Port Angeles Boys & Girls Club.

“He” could be any one of the hundreds of children who walk through the doors of our local club every week. In this case, “he” was Cody Mireau.

The only time Cody walked into the Boys & Girls Club feeling like a stranger was the first time.

He found making friends was easy and people were genuinely glad to see him . . . and they cared.

Cody took on programs at the club; Healthy Habits, Passport to Manhood and Running Club.

He strengthened his

Cody Mireau, 2016 Youth of the Year education by joining the afterschool Power Hour Homework Club.

And it was through his experiences at the club that he realized his life was more enriched by being of service to others.

His endeavours lead him to

do things like working with the Humane Society as a dog walker and visiting a senior care facility; having wonderful conversations learning other people’s lives and their stories.

This year, he is working as an intern, helping younger members find their voice and secure their footings.

He is due to graduate from

Port Angeles High School this year and plans to join the Army and be of service to his nation and to his family, the Club.

The Boys & Girls Club “Youth of the Year” award is now in its 70th year.

It is bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. It is not an easy achievement to accomplish.

In addition to being all the things the award recognizes, the youth must submit completed essays on their vision for America, their personal brand – their identity and character and the confidence to project that, and their club experiences.

They must also give a speech in front of an audience.

Successfully completing that level, the youth must

then interview before a panel of judges representing the upper echelon of the local and Washington State Boys & Girls Club Association.

This year, The “Youth of the Year” is Cody Mireau.

It is recognition wellearned.
