“These frightening occurrences lead families to call our office and ask for help,” said Kristi Larson, franchise owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office in Seattle-Tacoma.

“This resource was created to help Seattle area families understand the risk of wandering and have a tool that empowers them to quickly take action if a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia wanders.”

The Missing Senior Network is part of Home Instead Senior Care network’s new Prevent WanderingSM program, which includes resources such as insight into what may trigger wandering events, steps families can take to help keep their loved ones safe, and tips on what to do if a wandering event occurs.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, anyone living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia is at risk of wandering.

“Wandering can happen at any time, and not just

on foot – someone in a car or even a wheelchair could wander,” said Monica Moreno, director of Early Stage Initiatives for the Alzheimer’s Association. “A person may want to go back to a former job he or she had, even though that job may no longer exist.

Or, someone may have a personal need that must be met. There’s always a purpose and intent. It’s just a matter of identifying the triggers.”

Connecting Emerald Heights residents through Hopelink events

hen it comes to lending a helping hand, Carolyn Hathaway is the person you want by your side.

Carolyn and her husband, Jim, moved to Redmond’s Emerald Heights in early 2012 after learning about the community from their

good friends and Emerald Heights’ residents, Peter and Helen Ernst.

Choosing a retirement residence was a tough decision for the Hathaways. After a thorough search of Seattle and visiting several other communities, Jim and Carolyn found Emerald Heights to be their top

choice.

The Hathaways knew they did not want to live in a place where they felt confined or that lacked a sense of natural environment.

Carolyn also is part of Emerald Heights’ book club and enjoys working parttime in the thrift shop. All of the shop’s proceeds go to the Benevolence Fund, a program Carolyn is more than happy to support.

“We didn’t want to live in a high-rise in downtown Seattle, where we would have no lawn or landscaping. At Emerald Heights, we have beautiful landscaping and it feels more ‘homelike’ because of our beautiful surroundings,� they said.

With so many activities to participate in at Emerald Heights, Carolyn felt inspired to do more.

Carolyn enjoys the fitness classes Emerald Heights has to offer as well as the games, her favorite being ping pong.

“You could spend your entire life here without having to leave,� she said. “It’s like living on a cruise ship. Our needs are met and then some. It was important to me to reach out to the community and find a way to contribute.�

“We are having a tournament this year. I came in second last year and am hoping to win this year!� she said with a hint

Carolyn found out about Hopelink, a community action agency serving homeless and low-income families, through former

co-chairs Ellie Lindblom and Jean Slonecker. The pair asked her if she was interested and she happily said yes. “Ellie mentored me for a year, then she passed the baton and I took it on from there,� she explained. In 2015, Carolyn worked with Ellie as co-chair for her first “End Summer Hunger� event. On June 10, Carolyn and her new co-chair, Trudy Vering, led the “End Summer Hunger� event, rallying together a group of volunteers from Emerald Heights to help. “End Summer Hunger is an effort to provide food for children who normally have their lunch provided by their school.� Carolyn explained that because of summer vacation, several children won’t have school lunches to sustain them.

“We don’t know how many meals these children get during the day so the idea was to make sure there would be food available from Hopelink food bank for the families that need help.�

The event was nothing short of a major success.

In total, Carolyn and the group collected $6,227 in cash donations and 1,534 pounds of food.

Carolyn takes satisfaction in knowing she is making a difference in the lives of others.

Carolyn also partners with Hopelink for an event during Christmas, “Treats for Toys.�

The event is designed to encourage people to buy and donate unwrapped Christmas gifts that are then donated to children in need.

New retirement community targets Chinese-Americans

n the 1880s, thousands of Chinese laborers and coal miners were forced out of Newcastle. In 2017, thousands of people will move to the area to live in a luxury retirement community specifically targeting and designed for Chinese-Americans.

Aegis Gardens of Newcastle, a 7-acre resort-style complex with access to Lake Boren, is the second complex the company has designed for a specific cultural group and the first in the Pacific Northwest.

The 110 suites, dining halls and community spaces have been designed based on feng shui principals and with inspiration from Chinese architecture. Bilingual

Officials at Aegis Living had to be meticulous when planning the complex, Aegis Living founder Dwayne Clark said. He and his team began researching Chinese culture 16 years ago and took the entire design team to Shanghai for a week.

In one case, that meant ripping out stonework around a fountain that an expert deemed was bad feng shui. Aegis Living had to grapple with the city of Newcastle to change the unlucky numbers in the site’s address, and had to change their corporate colors from blue ( which is associated with death and dying in Chinese culture )

“It’s been a very different kind of operation for us because you have to be very culturally sensitive and understand that this is a complex market,” Clark said.

Part of the issue the company had to tackle was trust in the Chinese community. In China, children traditionally care for their elderly parents.

“In China, people mostly live for their children. But I think it’s changing here.

They’re becoming more Americanized,” Shuang Wang said.

But, the company quickly gleaned that if children are going to place their parents in a retirement community, it has to be excellent and make their parents very happy, Clark said. They also want to

“A lot of younger Asians feel responsibility to care for their parents. But a lot of elderly Chinese want independence, as do their children,” said former Governor and Aegis Newcastle board member Gary Locke. Keeping family connections and creating spaces where

they can gather, cook meals and play with their grandchildren is key for this complex to be successful, he added.

That’s why the Newcastle site has many intergenerational spaces.

It will feature a daycare, so that grandchildren and grandparents can see one another regularly. It will also have a movie theater

and an activity center.

According to Nielson, 92,000 Chinese-Americans live within a 25-mile radius of the Newcastle site, making it a logical net step. With nearly a year before the site is completed, it is already 15 percent pre-leased.

Their support efforts are not all clinical. Among the services volunteers may provide are “story catching,” where they take down a patient’s life story to leave as a keepsake with family

members. Volunteers may also simply watch TV with patients, make them meals or go to the park.

“There is this huge amount of resource that goes into it,” she said.

“Sometimes caregivers need help, someone to take over and sit in a loved one’s presence while a family member can go see a movie or have lunch or see a bereavement counselor because they don’t have any time to themselves.

We want people to know we’re here for you and not just in a clinical sense.”

Munn said she hopes culturally-engrained ideas that death is “bad” can shift into a belief that death is an important part of life that needs to be

addressed and embraced.

She added people don’t have to be dying to consider the importance of hospice care as it applies to themselves.

“It’s always just an option to consider,” Munn said.

“Death is inevitable, you can’t hide from it. The more you learn about hospice and the great program it is, [you see that] you don’t have to end your life in pain or alone.”

orthshore Senior Center has something for everyone, whether you’re in need of a hot meal, a creative outlet, a new exercise routine or simple coffee and conversation.

“We want people to think of the center as a place where they can come to enhance their lives,” Danette Klemens, NSC executive director, said.

Both a hot lunch and a sandwich and soup lunch are offered from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Monday through Friday at the center in Bothell for a $5 suggested donation.

Registration for Meals on Wheels can be coordinated by calling

425-286-1049. NSC also has a coffee bar where patrons can purchase treats for nominal fees.

NSC runs a variety of locations, including the Bothell center, the adjacent Northshore Adult Day Center and Health and Wellness Center, Kenmore Senior Center and Mill Creek Senior Center. More than 55 people work for NSC, but the organization relies on its 500-plus volunteers.

“You have no idea how elated I get by being able to help people directly,” Sal Garcia, who volunteers as a personal trainer and physical therapist at the Health and Wellness Center, said after recounting stories of helping seniors regain mobility through fitness and exercise programs.

NSC provides a variety of programming, including approximately 300 classes and activities per year, through its Bothell, Kenmore and Mill Creek locations.

Art classes, computer classes, dance classes, finance classes, fitness programs, support groups and day trips are all part of the lineup, with a large share of the programming open to members and non-members.

“The senior center is an amazing place,” Bothell resident Lori Simmons said while taking a ceramics class. “Everyone has a story about why it means so much to us.”

In 2015, 6,415 people visited the senior center 90,878 times.

discounted fees for some of the center’s programming, is $35 per year for an individual. A two-person membership is $60.

NSC is the largest senior center in the state and the second largest in the United States, Klemens said. (The largest in the U.S. is, coincidentally, North Shore Senior Center in Evanston, Illinois)

Funding for the local center comes from a variety of sources, including EvergreenHealth; the cities of Bothell, Kenmore, Kirkland, Mill Creek and Woodinville; the Washington State Department of Transportation; Snohomish County Human Services; King County EMS; grants;

private, corporate and individual donors and fundraising events. NSC used to be part of Sound Generations but went independent in March.

However, Sound Generations still provides funding for the center’s lunches and Meals on Wheels programming.

The Cool Mom Growing up, I was the kid with the cool mom. She would drive around our small beach town on her scooter in her movie star sunglasses. She would spend hours barefoot at her easel painting the surf. She wore layers of bright colors and laughed loudly. We often ate pancakes for dinner, staying up late and watching scary movies. Mom loved to fill our home with friends and sleepovers. She always said “the more, the merrier!”
