ainbridge Island’s working women do something more as they juggle the many demands of work and family. They also contribute, over and over again, to the philanthropic health and civic life of their community. They give to our auctions. They take on leadership positions and help to educate our children. They volunteer for groups working to house, clothe and feed islanders in need. So this week, take a moment to say thank you to the many women who, in one fashion or another, make this island run. Their contributions are immeasurable. For nearly 30 years I have been working with folks ranging from children with special needs to elite performers on movement issues so that they can optimize their physical abilities, and when appropriate increase their comfort. Inspired by the above quote I am now additionally working with movement as a tool to enhance what we typically think of as cognitive functions. I am especially interested in supporting children with learning disabilities and other school challenges.

Rebecca Judd, Branch manager at the Bainbridge Island Library

SHE KNOWS THE LIBRARY -JUST ASK HER

BY LESLIE KELLY

When Rebecca Judd was a little girl growing up in Carbondale, Illinois, her parents took her to the public library once a week. She’d select a Nancy Drew mystery or another book on her list and they’d head home. So, it should come as no big surprise that Judd became a librarian. She is currently the branch manager at the Bainbridge Island Library, which is part of the Kitsap Regional Library. “I loved to read and I was always that kid with my head in a book,” Judd said. “I think those trips to the library as a child sparked my love for libraries.” In fact, she was a classics major in college, and studied architecture, geography, literature, philosophy and logic, graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Northwest University in Illinois. She later got a master’s in library science from Indiana University. “When I started to think about a career I thought about the library,” she said. “I liked that the mission of the public library is to connect readers to learning and to the community. That seemed to resonate with me.” She began her career at the Free Public Library in Bedford, Massachusetts, as head of the reference department. Four years later, she moved to Pelham, Massachusetts and became the library director. She also was coordinator for the Massachusetts Book Awards. She has now been with the

Bainbridge Library for the past nine years. “When I received the job with the Bainbridge Library, I couldn’t believe the opportunity I was going to have,” she said. “I felt like I won the lottery.” It was not only the beautiful Pacific Northwest location that thrilled her, but also the wonderful community. She felt a real sense of identity. “Bainbridge is a real reading community,” she said. “People here really support the library.” One of the great things about being a librarian are the great conversations. “People come in and you start talking and sharing and it’s really a learning experience,”she said. “And every day is different.” She also said the team of people she works with at the Bainbridge Library are excellent. “They are incredible and very dedicated,” Judd said. “They want to help people and promote reading and literacy.” Working at the Bainbridge Library is the best of both worlds because its like a small town library, she said, but it also has the resources of a larger system in the Kitsap Regional Library. “We have the benefit that we can meet our own community’s needs, while at the same time, with KRL we can work on the larger initiatives that help all of us.” Judd particularly appreciates the service and reference desk at the Bainbridge See JUDD, Page 7

Micky Molnaire, Director of Tourism and Marketing for the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce

CONNECTING PEOPLE

BY LESLIE KELLY

If you need to know something — anything — about Bainbridge Island, Micky Molnaire is the person to ask. Molnaire is the director of marketing and tourism for the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce, a position she has had for the past eight years. In that role, she “sells” Bainbridge Island to visitors, residents, business owners and anyone else who wants to know about Bainbridge. Her work includes editing the in-house brochures that tell folks about various aspects of the island, managing chamber-based websites, coordinating chamber volunteers and talking up the island to everybody. “I see my job as connecting people and information,” Molnaire said. “I connect visitors to things and places, businesses to each other, and people to whatever they’re needing. I like to empower people.” Her first professional job, after earning a bachelor’s degree in English, was to teach English to people in Germany and Iran. In 1979, when the revolution took place

in Iran, she came back to the U.S. for her safety. “I had friends who were in Seattle who wanted me to come to Seattle to teach English to Southeast Asian refugees who were settling there,” she said. “So I did.” In 1995, she moved to Bainbridge Island. When she got tired of commuting to Seattle for her teaching job with the Settle Public Schools District, she educated herself in computers and began a second career teaching computer programs to others. “It was kind of the same thing,” she said. “Computers were kind of a foreign language at the time.” It was the feeling of “ignorance” and not understanding the words that are being said that kept some people, especially business owners, from embracing computers, she said. “In the early years, men weren’t too fond of computers because they were seen as just glorified typewriters,” she said. “They saw it as women’s work. But once they saw what a spreadsheet could do for their See MOLNAIRE, Page 6

MOLNAIRE, Continued from page 5 business, that all changed.” In 1999, she became the president of the first tourism and marketing group for Bainbridge Island and eventually that grew into her job at the chamber. Throughout her time at the chamber she’s taken on added responsibilities including being part of the North Kitsap Tourism Coalition, Bainbridge Business Women and Bainbridge Business Connections. The current focus of her work is to promote Bainbridge Island as a place to visit in the off season. “From May to September, there’s no problem getting tourists here,” she said. “And with the big cruise lines in Seattle, going to Alaska, many of those people take the ferry here to see what we’re all about. “But now, with our web presence, we’re working to show all the things that attract visitors to the island in the winter.” Many of the calls the chamber gets are to help organize group tours or events on the island and throughout North Kitsap. “They’ll ask about transportation around the island,” she said. “Or where they can take a large group for lunch. These are the kinds of things we are glad to help out with.” Another caller wanted to know

OCTOBER 28, 2016

where to take belly dancing lessons on Bainbridge, she told. And once in awhile, there’s that strange question that comes up that really can’t be answered. “We had a lady call and say she wanted to visit, but was very afraid to ride the ferry and cross the water,” Molnaire said. “So we told her she could travel around south and go over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. But she didn’t like bridges either. “Well, we told here ‘You know we are an island,’” Molnaire recalled. “She said ‘Can’t you fix that?’” Molnaire said because the staff in the chamber office has been around for years, they have a “pool of knowledge” and can answer most questions. As for when she’s not at work, Molnaire likes to cook, garden, read, and is writing a Regency romance novel, set in the 1800 to 1820s era. She has two master’s degrees in Western European Studies and teaching English as a foreign language and she grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. At the chamber, she feels she’s in the right place. “I like people,” she said. “I like to empower people. Pretty much everything I’ve done in my life has been to empower people.”

JUDD, Continued from page 3 Library. “People come in with all kinds of questions,” she said. “Everything from ‘What businesses are in Kitsap County?’ to ‘Can you recommend a good book?’ to “Can you help me find a book on mushrooms?’ It’s wonderful to be able to connect people to the information they need.” And she’s had some humorous dealings with patrons, too. “I once had a library patron ask me for a best-selling book,” Judd said. “She couldn’t remember the title, only that the book was yellow. It took a little bit of sleuthing to figure out that she was looking for Kathryn

Stockett’s ‘The Help.’ But she was thrilled when we found it.” And then, there are those younger patrons who think her entire life is the library. “I had a child, maybe four or five, ask me where I slept,” Judd said. “At first, I wasn’t sure what he meant. But then I realized he thought I lived at the library. I explained to him that only books were lucky enough to live at the library.” And Judd enjoys gardening, yoga and, of course, reading. Judd can sum up her work in a couple of short sentences. “Libraries are a force of good in the world,” she said. “They are a great place to work.”
