WELCOME Wildcat Fans
to the 2016-17 school year and the start of the fall sports season at Oak Harbor High School
W
e are glad you have decided to support our student athletes by attending today’s contest. It takes not only great fans to build successful activity programs, but it takes supportive families, the Oak Harbor community, teachers, coaches, school district support staff and the student body to provide these opportunities. This is why the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association is currently promoting an “Activities NICKI LUPER Matter” campaign. The high school experience can be a ATHLETIC DIRECTOR very positive one for those students who become involved in activities. This does not only include participating in athletics but also includes service and special interest clubs within the school that are available to all students. The goal of being actively involved in the school is to create a connection between school, achieving personal goals and supporting each other as a community. There are many opportunities for students, parents, fans and community members to give of their time and talents to make OHHS great. We hope that not only our students take the opportunity to become involved and give back to others at OHHS but also welcome the support from parents and community members to become involved with the Oak Harbor Wildcat Boosters Club that directly supports our athletic programs. Thank-you for supporting student activities at OHHS. GO WILDCATS!!

STUDENT SPORTS
Why Activities Matter from the WIAA:
• Better grades and higher scores on standardized testing. Kids who are physically active for one hour each day may perform up to 40% better on standardized tests. • Increased school attendance. Research has found that participants in interscholastic activities attend an average of 21 more days of school than their peers who do not participate in activities. Interscholastic activity participation is associated with decreased high school dropout rates. • Improved health and wellness Students involved in activities have high rates of exercise, a healthier self-image and lower odds for emotional distress, suicidal behavior and substance abuse. • Development of life-long skills and relationship building. Activities are educational– students learn teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline and develop skills to handle competitive situations. • Increased odds of attending and graduating from college Students who participated in interscholastic athletics are 19% more likely to go on to some level of higher education. • Decreased likelihood of juvenile crimes, drug, alcohol, cigarette use and sexual activities. Students who spend no time in extracurricular activities are 49% more likely to use drugs and 37% more likely to become teen parents that those who spend 1-4 hours per week participating in after-school activities. • Positively enhances a student’s educational experience Sports and activities give students an opportunity to be involved, interact with peers and adult mentors, and learn skills and life lessons outside of a classroom setting. source Washington Interscholastic Activities Association

SCORING Each tennis match is made up of two to three sets. To win a set, you must win at least six games. The games are scored starting at “love” (or zero) and going up to 40, but that’s actually just three points. From love, the first point is 15, then 30, then 40, which wins the game. DEUCE When two competing sides are tied at “40” in a game. Because a game must be won by two points, play continues from deuce until one player leads by a margin of two points.
