Former Centrum artist returns with new exhibit

PORT TOWNSEND — Resident Bird, an exhibit featuring the art of John Hillmer, will be on display at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way, today and Saturday.

The exhibit — which includes original paintings, prints and graphic experiments — is open from 5 to 8 tonight and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, upstairs in the South Studio of Building 205.

The exhibit is organized by the Centrum Foundation, a nonprofit organization headquartered at Fort Worden that is a gathering place for artists and creative thinkers from around the world.

Hillmer is a former Centrum artist in residence at Fort Worden who now divides most of his time between homes in Bend, Ore., and Mexico.

Old flames explored in play

SEQUIM — Can a former affair reignite into a new relationship?

That’s what the characters of “Skylight” will explore beginning tonight.

The Tony-award winning play written by David Hare, opens at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave. The play will continue with several weekend performances through Sept. 25.

Tonight’s performance begins at 7:30, with an encore at the same time Saturday and a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at olympictheatre arts.org.

A pay what you will performance will be on Sept. 14.

This play incorporates adult themes and language.

This play will hold certain appeal to patrons looking for an “intelligent, poignant, topical conversation about love, death, money, education and social responsibility,” said the play’s director, Angela Poynter.

This play centers on East London schoolteacher Kyra Hollis, portrayed by Anna Andersen, who is visited one night by Edward Sargeant and, later, his father Tom Sargeant, portrayed by Ron Graham, according to a news release.

Kyra, while living with the Sargeant family, leaves when her affair with Tom is discovered. After Tom’s wife dies, the two wonder if they can rekindle their relationship.

Poynter recently performed in the musical “I Do! I Do!,” while Andersen and Graham have worked as professionals in the Los Angeles area.

Andersen most recently directed “The Tempest” in Port Angeles and Graham appeared on the OTA stage beside Poynter in “I Do! I Do!” They will be joined by a third cast member, Brohm Dason, who arrived recently in Sequim and appeared on the OTA stage in “Scapino!” in July.

‘Top 5’ pianist takes the stage at OMF

PORT TOWNSEND — The inaugural season of the Olympic Music Festival at Fort Worden State Park comes to a close this weekend with two performances by multi-Grammy nominated pianist Fred Hersch.

This is the 33rd season since the festival was founded. For the previous 32 seasons, the festival was held in a historic Quilcene barn.

Hersch’s performance is the cherry on top of a successful season at a brand new venue, which began in July, said Julio Elizalde, OMF artistic director, on Tuesday.

“If I were to name my top five pianists on the planet, Fred Hersch would be one of them without question,” Elizalde said.

“The great composers of the past such as Mozart and Beethoven were famous improvisers and Fred is a critical part of that tradition — he’s a magician and poet at the piano who somehow understands how to stop time.”

Hersch declined to comment for this article.

Eight Grammy nominations Hersch — who has received eight Grammy nominations, according to a news release — will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fort Worden’s 275 seat Joseph F. Wheeler Theater, 25 Eisenhower Way. Hersch will announce his program from the stage. The performances will include a 20-minute intermission.

He will sign his CDs for attendees following both performances.

Tickets for those 13 and older are $33 or $40 depending on seating location, and free for youths ages 7 to 12, although reservations for them must be made in advance. Tickets can be purchased online at http:// tinyurl.com/PDN-OMF-Hersch.

It was founded in 1984 by Alan Iglitzin, a former violist with the Philadelphia String Quartet, according to a news release.

The property originally was owned by the Iseri family, Japanese Americans who built the farmhouse and barn, according to the release.

The barn was repurposed to host the Philadelphia String Quartet, and Iglitzin has said he soon discovered local audiences were immediately drawn to the idea of enjoying live music in such an idyllic setting.

The festival went on to become an established arts organization in the Pacific Northwest, drawing musicians each summer from across the nation to perform.

Since its opening season, the festival has grown from three weekend performances to 12, with about 5,000 visitors attending concerts in 2015, according to festival officials.

Named new artistic director Iglitzin last October told the festival’s board of directors he planned to retire as executive director. From 2011 to 2014, Alan had slowly transitioned the leadership of the festival to Elizalde, who was named artistic director in the fall of 2014.

Other music programs are still held at the barn.

The transition of the festival included the founding of a partnership with Centrum, a nonprofit organization based at Fort Worden that organizes art festivals, workshops and performances year-round.

enthusiasm and the audiences and the donors have all been extremely happy with the final result. I think they are happy we have this new home in Port Townsend.”

Plans already are underway for the 34th season in 2017, Elizalde said.

“I think now that we have learned quite a bit about what it is to be here, it is really great to know that the groundwork has been established for next season.”

Music, mystery and art combine in PA

by Bucky and Stew Play the Blues, meet the “mystery artist” and enjoy the sights of downtown Port Angeles this weekend during the Second Weekend Art Event.

The monthly event, taking place the second weekend of each month, was founded about 10 years ago by the Port Angeles Arts Council as a coalition of downtown Port Angeles businesses and art galleries to bring attention to the culture and variety offered there, organizers said.

Bucky and Stew Play the Blues is a new jam blues band, according to a news release.

Their guitar and vocal stylings are backed by the solid bass playing of Randy Bennett and tasteful drumming of Harry Bidasha, according to the release.

As far as the mystery artist, “sometimes it is better to not know the creator of the art and to live comfortably in the suspended state of knowing and unknowing called reality,” said Dan Lieberman, 2nd Friday Art Rock spokesperson.

Brackney, of Sequim, is

primarily an abstract pen and ink artist, according to a news release, and uses the Zentangle Method to make deliberate pen strokes without concerning herself what it will look like when she is finished.

The Zentangle Method is a form of abstract drawing.

“As she does the strokes, it allows fresh thoughts, new perspectives and creative insights to flow unhindered,” said Pamela Dick, event organizer.

“There is no eraser in her art, but mistakes can be foundations for new patterns and unexpected new directions.

“The art offers a unique freedom with no predetermined solution.”

Rhodes said she has loved to sew since she was 10 years old, and began to make bags about five years ago — selling them at the Sequim Farmers Market.

She up-cycles quality discontinued upholstery fabric, leather, vintage buttons and jewelry to create

her one-of-a-kind bags, according to a news release.
