CRUZ 2016 is biggest one-day event in Kitsap County Up to 600 hot rods, custom, classic, antique cars to fill Port Orchard’s downtown streets At least 20,000 car enthusiasts are expected to visit Port Orchard’s waterfront area Sunday, Aug. 14, to peek, ogle and gaze at upwards of 600 cars on display for the 29th annual CRUZ 2016 car show. Show time is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is hosted for the 19th consecutive year by

the Saints Car Club of Port Orchard. Visitors will be able to wander among the array of classic, customized, hot rod and racing cars that will be lined up along Sinclair Inlet. Three featured cars and a customized truck festooned with the Seahawks logo in blue and

green headline the show. The show is sponsored by Kitsap Bank. Trophies will be awarded in 60 categories. There will be plenty of door prizes given out, along with food sold by vendors, and lots of music. Bay Street will be closed to traffic during the show. Organizers remind those coming to opt taking the shuttle service from the Kitsap County Courthouse parking lot on Cline Street and the Park and Ride lot next to the Armory on Mile Hill Drive. The Bremerton-to-Port Orchard foot ferry

also will be running on a regular schedule, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Aug. 14. The show is free. To register and display your vehicle at the show, you’ll need to arrive between 7 a.m. and noon on the day of the event. The registration fee is $15. CRUZ 2016 organizers are asking those attending to bring along canned goods for the South Kitsap Helpline food bank. CRUZ 2016 t-shirts and sweatshirts will be available for purchase.

Featured car | 1949 Cadillac Model 62 It’s been sitting on ‘velvet pillow’ for over 67 years By BOB SMITH

rsmith@portorchardindependent.com

At age 16, Gary Kanekkeberg first laid eyes on what became his dream car: a sleek, aerodynamic 1949 Cadillac Model 62. His object of automotive desire was owned by his neighbor, which probably set him back between $3,500 to $4,000 in 1949 — a spendy price for a vehicle that was out of the financial reach of most Americans in those days. It certainly wasn’t a common sight on Kitsap County highways, Kanekkeberg remembered. He believes there weren’t more than a handful driving in the Puget Sound region. “Not too many people had them here,” he says. “I thought to myself, ‘One day I’m going to have that car.”

True to his word, Kanekkeberg, who owns Port Orchard Plumbing, now has one parked in his South Kitsap home’s driveway. The cremecolored beauty is used to being treated gently. With just 42,000 original miles registered on its odometer, the Cadillac has never been restored. Its engine is original and nothing else has been changed, he said. “It’s never even had a flat tire,” he said, and then opened the trunk of the fastback luxury car. Inside is a spare tire that’s original. A tire jack sits inside its original box awaiting a tire change that has never been needed. And on the floorboard in the back, the original owner’s manual sits, also in pristine condition. The two-door sedan, which will be one of the featured cars at the CRUZ 2016 car show Aug. 14, has been owned by just three owners. Kanekkeberg said the two previous owners put minimal miles on the Cadillac and kept it in CADILLAC, SEE PAGE 4

Poulsbo resident Gary Watland’s 1932 Ford Coupe is one of the featured cars at the CRUZ 2016 car show.

Featured car | 1932 Ford Coupe now resilient after bumpy start By BOB SMITH

rsmith@portorchardindependent.com

Poulsbo resident Gary Watland’s featured CRUZ 2016 car, a 1932 Ford Coupe, is much like a problem child: a mess in the early years, but, years later, is perfect in every way. Some 27 years ago, Watland purchased his now-pristine Coupe in sorry condition. It was rusted out with little to show for its purchase price. After it sat idle for several years, the car enthusiast began his restoration effort. As he told the story later, the early years didn’t go well. After having the frame rebuilt in 1994, Watland installed a new engine, which promptly was destroyed by a shop helper. A bad paint job followed. He then looked to California, where a new motor was built

— for $11,000. Now striking in its shiny black livery, the car looks the part of a ’32 Deuce Coupe hot rod (remember The Beach Boys’ song, “Little Deuce Coupe”?). It has plenty of power supplied by a 500plus horsepower 347-cubic-inch Ford stroker engine. It’s tricked out with a light green and off-white interior, and a wood-grained dashboard and steering wheel. It’s a sweet sight to old beachcombers when the Ford Coupe hits the road, for sure. But Watland is reluctant to take her out for more than a spin around the block. “I have so much (money) into it, I hate to get it in the rain,” he said of it taking on the damp Pacific Northwest weather.

Denny Asleson of Bremerton and wife Marta pose next to their 1953 GMC two-door pickup truck.

Featured Truck | 1953 GMC pickup truck is a sight to behold When Denny Asleson of Bremerton wheels his 1953 GMC two-door, five-window pickup truck around South Kitsap streets, it’s the brightest vehicle on the road. And Asleson likes it that way. The South Kitsap native said he’s been a hot rod fan for years and always wanted to own one. The low-riding modified hot rod truck is painted “fire engine” red on its exterior. The interior is fitted with a classy custom gray

cloth and matching outfitted bench seat. The sleek truck has a custom center console with a Clarion AM/FM/AUX radio, and vintage air conditioning controls. It sits on 18-inch front and 20-inch rear American racing wheels. The truck is powered with a 5.7-liter, 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. It has power front and rear slotted disc brakes, Asleson said.

Hillis is heart and soul of Saints Car Club

Bob Smith | Independent

Buzz Hillis’s pride and joy is his restored 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe. By BOB SMITH

rsmith@portorchardindependent.com

Buzz Hillis is one of the true gentlemen of Kitsap County’s vintage and refurbished car enthusiast community. The 76-year-old Hillis, a soft-spoken but knowledgable “carophiloe” who has two large garages to house his automotive collection, is

something of a celebrity among those living near his Mullenix Road home. His property is rural, but Hillis said he regularly has strangers drive by who are struck by one of the many restored vehicles he might have parked outside. And friends often drop by to show off their newest vehicular purchase or to share their latest car stories.

As you peruse the car show...

He’s a longtime member of the Saints Car Club of Port Orchard, which has about 60 members who help each other restore their cars and pitch in during CRUZ car show time. Cars and trucks — anything with four wheels and an engine — are fascinating contraptions for Hillis. It’s almost always been that way from the start, when at 16 his first job was working in a salvage yard. “Playing with cars is my only hobby,” he said. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke — I have no other hobbies.” The car enthusiast said his wife, whom he lost six years ago, tolerated his all-encompassing, expensive hobby. But Hillis admits she would have blown a gasket if she knew how much money has gone into his pride and joy, a 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe. It has a 376 cubicinch V8 engine, dressed in a striking cranberry pearl burgundy paint job. He purchased it in 2011. After four years of restoration work, aided by a cadre of friends, it sits gleaming in the driveway to one of his garages. “It was the most extensive restoration I’ve ever taken on,” Hillis said. “If my wife were alive, she would have killed me.” The Chevy Master and Master Deluxe passenger vehicles were manufactured by the car company between 1933 and 1942. It was on the expensive end of Chevy’s auto lineup. In 1939, the car company produced series JA and JB under the Master model. The JA Master Deluxe base model also was known as the Master 85.

Hawks truck reminds: it’s football season! If you aren’t already catching Seattle Seahawks fever, you assuredly will after catching a glimpse of Dan Lewandowski’s “12th Man” Ram truck at the CRUZ 2016 car show. The souped-up Dodge truck festooned with super-sized Seahawks logos is owned by Lewandowski, who is an executive officer with the Haselwood Auto Group. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who ventures into his office and sees his collection of Seahawks memorabilia, which includes autographed footballs and photos, and even a replica Vince Lombardi trophy that he got after his team won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 over the Denver Broncos. Lewandowski says the favorite part of his collection is his “pride and joy”: the one of a kind “12th Man” Ram truck. The Puyallup native was just entering his teenage years when the Seahawks joined the NFL in 1976. When asked how he got hooked on the Seahawks, Lewandowski said his father used to go fishing with the team’s first-ever head coach, Jack Patera. “The energy you feel on the field is like nothing else,” he said, “even in the Kingdome,” the team’s first home before Century Link Field was built. With enough memorabilia to start a 12TH MAN TRUCK, SEE PAGE 4

Kanekkeberg said the two previous owners put minimal miles on the Cadillac and kept it in pristine condition. “It runs perfect,” he said. property that houses about two dozen vintage vehicles, including a stately black 1930 LaSalle, considered the “poor man’s Cadillac” at the time. While the Cadillac 62 is his favorite car, a 1952 Chevrolet owns a big piece of his heart. Bought brand-new in Bremerton, Kanekkeberg eloped with his wife-to-be in the car 58 years ago. He also houses in his garage a 1965 Mustang, built during the Ford muscle car’s first production year. Kanekkeberg’s 1949 Cadillac 62 will be on featured display at CRUZ 2016, along with a 1953 GMC two-door modified cherry red truck, a 1932 Ford Coupe and a Seahawksemblazened truck.
