Grand marshals helped build community foundations By KYLE JENSEN South Whidbey Record

Some families specialize in a craft they’ve honed over the years, and forCarnival the Bradleys,Entertainment Country Fair • • that craft is heavy construction.819 Camano Ave Langley www.whidbeyislandfair.com • • Randy and Myrna Bradley were integral in the construction of numerous places where South Enders have spent time and created lasting memories — Community Park, Useless Bay Golf and Country Club, the fairgrounds and even the Knight Riders 4-H Club. The Whidbey Island fair organizers have decided to thank the Bradleys in a fitting way — to elect them as the grand marshals in this year’s Whidbey Island Fair parade. The Island County Fair Association determines who will lead the Whidbey Island Fair parade based on the impact their selection has had on the fair over the years. Board Photo by Kyle Jensen/The Record members also factor in the overall impact the selected grand marshals have had on the Randy and Myrna Bradley will serve as grand marshals for the Whidbey Island Fair’s South Whidbey community. annual parade. Knight Riders 4-H Club. Myrna has been a lover of horses since she was young and shared the desire with Marilyn Gabelein to provide South Whidbey kids the opportunity to ride and care for horses. They established the organization 30 years ago, and the Bradleys now have grandchildren in the club. “I always enjoyed horses, and I think kids with horses is a great thing, so I like to promote that any way I can,” Bradley said. Bradley Heavy Construction also played a part in the construction of the horse arena at the fairgrounds. Bradley said they used their CAT bulldozer to move dirt into the fairgrounds in order to build the horse arena. But the fairgrounds wasn’t the only existing community space they helped update with their equipment; they also helped Randy Bradley’s old employer in the construction of the country club building at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. While the heavy lifting is a thing of the past for both Bradleys, they can still be seen making appearances in the community. Myrna Bradley keeps in touch with Knight Riders 4-H Club, primarily through her grandchildren. Randy Bradley, despite suffering a stroke eight years ago that has limited his usage of the right side of his body, can still be seen playing the accordion at the Bayview Senior Center on Fridays. “He can still play the accordion, which is amazing,” Myrna Bradley said. “It never left him.”

school plans with 4-H, she said she was proud of how he finished his senior year. He’ll attend Washington State University next fall, where he hopes to study chemistry and biology. Though he’s had his successes, Kerri felt her son learned important lessons when he wasn’t winning prizes. “I think he has really exemplified what a 4-H’er should be,” Kerri Molitor said. “They’re all competitive and want to win the ribbons, but whether or not he won the grand championship, he knew it was the process rather than the just the end result. He showed good sportsmanship and composure.” She also felt Matt is epitomizes one of 4-H’s mottos, “To make the best better,” as a role model for younger kids and a difference maker in the community. Kerri said that Matt being named 4-H’er of the Year continues on a tradition in the family. Kerri’s sister was also awarded the honors in her final year in 4-H. The accolade didn’t fall on deaf ears for Molitor. “I just feel really honored to be selected,” Matt Molitor said. There’s so many other qualified 4-H’ers that put in a lot of work like I have. It was really a big deal to me that they saw me as being qualified.”

Former log rolling world champ among those eager to compete By EVAN THOMPSON South Whidbey Record

Jenny Janke-Owen will be among those enjoying the challenge of balancing on a log in water while pitted against another individual in the Log Arena. Janke-Owen, a resident of Winlock in Lewis County, won three world championships in 1979, 1980 and 1983. She’s a long-time fan of the fair. She was first invited out in 2005 when an exhibitionist could not attend. She’s been back ever since. “I love that fair. I love all the people that are there,” Janke-Owen said. “It’s a small fair and small Photo provided show, but the people are just wonderful.” Jenny Janke-Owen demonstrates log rolling while Jim Dodge assists from the water. The logs range in sizes from 12 to 15 inches in diameter, and the thinner the log, the harder the challenge will be. Considering Janke-Owen does not like water, it’s easy to understand why she’s become adept at the competition. “It’s an incentive, but it also makes you nervous,” Janke-Owen said. “I don’t like deep water.” Gabelein said the arena becomes especially popular on hot days, where people are more willing to brave the chance of falling into the water. On colder days, they prefer to stay on the log, he said. First-timers and veterans of the competition alike are invited to check things out. “More than anything, I think it’s an opportunity for people who have never done it before,” Gabelein said. The log rolling competition will include a bracket system where individuals will be pitting against each other one-on-one. Gabelein said ages range from six to 70 years old, and that it’s relatively safe for anyone to try. There are an average of three dozen participants each year, he said. “A lot of kids really like trying,” Gabelein said. “It’s one of those things you look at and say, well thats easy. Especially when they watch Jenny.”
