Leadership – that’s the message a group of leaders from the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors focused on when creating Advancing Leadership (AL). Federal Way’s unique professional development program for emerging community leaders.

Since 1999, an average of 25 participants have completed a ten-month program where they build community relationships, identify and develop personal and professional strengths and make a commitment to improve the community around them.

After 17 years, the program has more than 850 graduates, many who have held leadership positions in Federal Way. This group includes Teri Hickel, former AL executive director and current State Representative; Federal Way Police Chief Andy Hwang; Highline College’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dr. Lisa Skari; and many others who chose to strengthen their leadership skills and community involvement through AL. Lawrence Garrett, AL graduate and executive director, invites Federal Way residents to get more involved with the program.

“In order to be an effective community leader, you have to truly understand that

it takes a lot of moving parts to keep a community healthy, thriving and moving in the right direction,” said Chief Hwang. “As an AL participant, you have the opportunity to see other facets of Federal Way you may not even be aware exist.

This really helps you understand the fabric of the community and how you can help.”

Major funding for AL is provided by: Federal Way Public Schools, Weyerhaeuser, CHI Franciscan Health, Highline College, Multi-Service Center, Umpqua Bank, Grace Church, Rotary Club of Federal Way, Getting Smart and Highline for Kids Foundation.

Past Projects: • Federal Way Birth to Three Center’s special needs-accessible play structure • “Shelter in the Storm” a covered structure for the Multi-Service Center food bank • AL Youth – a version of the adult program for high school students • Organized original “Break The Chains 5K Event”, raising approximately $72,000 for Federal Way Coalition against Trafficking in 4 years.
