A glorious place to live, work or visit

I

t seems like just last week we were in the dark days of winter here on the White River Plateau and now spring is bursting out and the start of summer is just a few weeks away. It is the summer months that make up for the dark and damp winters that we are known for.

What a glorious place we live in! Even though development seems to be creeping closer each year, we are still surrounded by farmland and open space to the west, but we are on the edge of the wilderness with only small pockets of civilization to the east for miles. Buckley and Enumclaw are gateway communities to Mount Rainier National Park and hundreds of tourists pass through our communities each year shopping, eating in our restaurants and sleeping in our hotels. Crystal Mountain is a world class ski resort here in our backyard where skiers

from all over the world come to ski. With the opening of Pat the gondola, Crystal MounJohnson tain now operates during the summer months allowing people of all ages and abiliMayor ties to ride to the “top” and Buckley experience that gorgeous Above the fog view of Mount Rainier that Below the snow the skiers have known about for years.

The foothills and mountain areas provide miles of hiking opportunities from the Pacific Crest Trail and the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier to a walk around Deep Lake, a hike up Mount Peak (Pinnacle Peak), walking the Foothills Trail or trip up to Mowich or Tipsoo lakes. Our outdoor opportunities here are endless.

The Log Show in Buckley is the last full weekend in June complete with a parade down Main Street, street fair, carnival, Boy Scout pancake breakfast and the Log Show where local loggers compete in several different events for prizes and bragging rights for

the next year. The weekend before is the Log Show for kids that kids can test their “logging skills.”

The first Saturday in June (which is National Trails Day) is the Rainier to Ruston Relay and Ultra from near the Ipsut Creek entrance to Mount Rainier and ends on Ruston Way in Tacoma. More than 1,000 runners compete each year. The last Saturday in July is the B&O Half Marathon which continues to grow each year and follows the Foothills Trail from Buckley to Orting. The Buckley Youth Activity Center has many programs and activities for kids with special programs on Thursday afternoon. Be sure to visit the Foothills Museum and check out the hundreds of artifacts that are on display showing the history of our area.

The summer is too short to get it all in!

Buckley Calendar of Events June 18: The Buckley Kid’s Log Show The kid’s Log Show always takes place the Saturday prior to the main attraction.

June 25-26: The Buckley Log Show The Buckley Log Show is the biggest event in the small town, traditionally taking place the last full weekend of June. The annual parade rolls down Main Street starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Vendors line River Avenue both days. At the heart of the weekend is the Log Show competition, which has competitors testing their skills in a variety of events.

Buckley’s Community Soup Supper The second Wednesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Center, 811 Main St. The city of Buckley hosts a free soup supper once each month.

This free dinner is hosted monthly with the intent of providing a great way for neighbors to get out and meet neighbors. Various

Wilkeson July 18: Handcar races The small town of Wilkeson gears up for one big day a year. Downtown will fill for the

parade that starts at 11 a.m.

Vendors will be scattered about selling their wares.

Attention then shifts to the annual competitions, which include the main event – the handcar races – along with lawnmower races and a tug-o-war contest.

Cashing in on Plateau geocaching

O

ne of my favorite things to do as a kid was scavenger

hunts.

Sadly, I can’t convince my parents to take the time to hide things around their house and leave me a trail of breadcrumbs when I come over to visit on the weekends.

I guess that’s why adults like me invented geocaching, and the Plateau’s rural-ness make it the perfect area for you to get out, explore and find several dozen geocaches right near you.

Before you start, you may first want to download some sort of geocaching app. I used the geocaching.com website but there are several other third party apps and websites you can use.

Second, bring a pen on your geocaching trip. Most geocaches have a sign-in list inside

the cache containers that people sign (for anyone interested, my fiancée and I are MerryN’Pip).

Playing on Finally, you may want the Plateau to load up your pockets with little trinkets or collectibles. Often, when the containers are big enough, people leave coins, stickers, even little figurines for other people to find and take. Just remember – you take one, you leave one.

There are several geocaches around Enumclaw that I’ve explored. The first caches I found were all on the Enumclaw Plateau Trail, just northeast of the city. The whole series spans about two miles, so it’s a great way to get exercise as well as have fun, something I always struggle to do. Just make sure to wear sturdy shoes – not all the caches are right along the trail (though none take you anywhere dangerous or on private property).

For those not in-the-know about geocaches, they’re often hidden with one or two general clues to help you find it.

Downloading a geocaching app onto your phone and using your GPS will help position you within at least a dozen feet of the cache that you’re looking for, but you still have to rely on sharp eyes (and sometimes, sharper wits) to find the cache.

For example, the first cache on the Enumclaw Plateau trail is called “City Limits.”

“If you’re walking north to south, you just entered the Enumclaw city limits. Welcome!

You’re looking for a camoed bison tube.

Please rehide exactly as found,” the clue reads.

It took us a while to find this cache, mostly because we has no clue what a bison tube looked like.

They’re shaped like a pill, about as big as a quarter, and often come with a key[ more GEOCACHING page 10 ]

ring on top. So good luck finding that one!

For people who need a hint, those who hid this cache (shout out to benandjayme) provided one additional clue: “I can see Rainier from here.”

If you do find this cache, remember to put it back exactly where you found it. That’s a big thing with us geocachers.

The coolest part of this particular cache series is eight of the 13 caches contain part of a letter-number substitute code. Finding all the parts of this code will give you the coordinates to a bonus cache, which, to be honest, I haven’t found yet.

There are several caches in downtown Enumclaw as well, and it’s fun to hunt around town, grab a drink at Kelley’s Mercantile or ice cream at Sweet Necessities to cool down and resume your hunt.

Geocaching is a world-wide hobby, and folks over in Buckley, Bonney Lake, Sumner and beyond will be delighted to learn they don’t have to travel all the way to Enumclaw to geocache.

And if you like to find yourself way out in the boonies, like Mount Baldy or Skookum Falls, there are still many geocaches waiting to be found.

So strap on your boots, grab some snacks, pocket your GPS (and maybe even a portable charger) and get caching.

Summertime Food Summer for most folks means activities and recreation.

With the warmer weather comes the desire to find and fix good food.

On the Plateau there are three fresh vegetable and fruit stands to fit the bill of finding top quality food to prepare.

Between Bonney Lake and Enumclaw there is Farm Fresh Produce on state Route 410 located at 24015 WA-410, Buckley.

On warm summer evenings there is nothing quite like picking some top quality fruits and vegetable to go with an entrée.

Grilled Ginger Peaches

Ingredients: - 2 semi-ripe peaches (not squishy) - 1 teaspoon ground ginger - 1/2 teaspoon canola oil

Directions: - Slice peaches into rings, drizzle a little canola oil on one side, followed by a dusting of ginger.

- Grill on the barbecue using a slotted grill pan.

- Serve warm.

Jello Pie

Fish Tacos Ingredients: Clayton’s Fish Taco Sauce - Fresh lime juice from 1 lime - 2 dollops of sour cream - 1 dollop of mayonnaise - 1 cup of fresh cilantro - 1 tablespoon of hot sauce - cumin - coriander - salt and pepper - olive oil - red wine vinegar Directions: Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Chill until ready to use.

Assembly: For the tacos pictured, cook Van de Kamp’s beer battered filets. Warm corn tortillas, place fish on top. Cover with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, fish taco sauce (and any other toppings you desire). Enjoy!

Ingredients: - 1 package (3 ounces) jello mix – any flavor - 2/3 cup boiling water - 2 cups ice cubes - 8 ounce container of Cool Whip - 8 or 9 inch diameter graham cracker crust Directions: - Completely dissolve Jello mix in boiling water, stirring for roughly three minutes - Add ice cubes and stir constantly until Jello is thickened, about 2 or 3 minutes - Remove any unmelted ice - Using a wire whisk, blend in whip cream, whip until smooth - Spoon into pie crust - Chill in fridge until mixture firms, roughly three hours

*You can fold fruit into the mixture and/or top the pie with fruit of your choosing.

Another cool area to check out is Victor Falls Park. Victor Falls Park is located south of Rhodes Lake Road and offers a Mayor view of the 70-foot high Bonney Lake Victor Falls waterfall.

The property was purWhere Dreams Can Soar chased by the city in 2013. Park amenities include parking area, soft-surface trails, falls viewpoint and picnic tables.

A brief history of Bonney Lake The Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society

The history of the Bonney Lake plateau figures prominently in the early history of Washington Territory. The Naches Trail, a former Native American path extending from the waters of Puget Sound to the Cascade Mountains and beyond, saw not only the traffic of Native Americans, but also trappers with the Hudson Bay Company and explorers from the 1841 Wilkes United States Exploring Expedition.

With the establishment of Washington Territory by an act of Congress in 1853, there was increased interest in settling the Puget Sound region. The Donation Land Claim Act served as an enticement for many new immigrants, including our area’s first settlers. Michael Connell and James Williamson, former soldiers in the U.S. Army assigned to Fort Steilacoom, built cabins on their claims along the White River. Reuben Ashford Finnell built his cabin and barn a mile to the west

on the banks of what is now known as Fennel Creek.

Puget Sound residents were eager to divert the wagon train migration from Oregon Territory to the wilderness of Western Washington in order to increase our population. The quickest way to do this was to create a road over the Cascades, thereby shortening the route by more than 200 miles. The old Naches Trail became known as the Immigrant Road, and the first wagon train to use the still unfinished road crossed the mountains in the fall of 1853, bringing families that became the founders of communities, such as Longmire, Biles, Lane, Himes, Kincaid, and many more.

Connell’s Prairie Historical Marker: Following the Medicine Creek Treaty of December 1854, Gov. Isaac Stevens relegated the Native Americans to reservations. Once a free roaming people, unrest began building when the Native Americans came to understand how confined they were to be. On Oct. 27, 1855,

the Puget Sound Indian War began on Connell’s Prairie when Michael Connell and Lt. James McAllister were ambushed as the road crossed the swamp where the Native Americans waited in thick underbrush, hidden by fallen timber. The following day the Native Americans crossed the White River and killed nine people and then returned to Connell’s Prairie a few days later to once again ambush unsuspecting victims, Col. A. Benton Moses and Joseph Miles. The Naches Trail - Immigrant Road soon became known as the Military Road providing a more rapid path between Steilacoom and Fort Walla Walla.

William B. Kelley arrived in 1864 with his wife, father Nathan, and his siblings.

Both William and his father claimed land on the banks of Finnell’s Creek, encompassing the prairie that had originally been settled by Reuben Finnell, which had been abandoned after the Native [ MORE HISTORY PAGE 23 ]

Kelley also donated land for a one-room school house. Kelly Lake school teacher Amy Johns Ryan, who was 19, wrote of keeping a hatchet on her school desk for protection against Native Americans, cougars, and other wildlife when she taught in 1897.

Kelley Lake School finally closed its doors in 1963, when it merged with the larger neighboring school districts.

In 1946 Ken Simmons moved his family into the Bonney Lake community. There was no electricity or water available and just a few dirt roads into the area. With Simmons spearheading a cooperative venture, it was just a matter of a few months and electricity was enjoyed by all. The next item that Simmons took on was a good water supply. on Feb. 28, 1949, the Town of Bonney Lake was incorporated with a population reported at 327. Within a year, Washington’s newest town had its own water system, new roads, expanded electric lines, refuse disposal, and telephone service.

By 1957, there were 12 businesses in Bonney Lake, with several new shopping developments underway.

By 1965, the population had increased to 1,280. Between 1942 and 1972, there were a number of attempts to dis-incorporate the community to return to being part of unincorporated Pierce County. The last such attempt was made in 1972.
