CALENDAR OF EVENTS • Issaquah Winter Brews Fest (February) – Enjoy live music, beer, cider, and wine tasting while meandering through the shops at Historic Gilman Village. www.beatthewinterbrews.com • Wine Walk (6-9 p.m., May 6 & June 3) – Wine connoisseurs will enjoy the opportunity to sip a variety of wines and mingle with fellow wine lovers the first Friday of every month from February through June in downtown Issaquah. • Issaquah Farmers Market (May 7 to Sept. 24) – There will be an abundance of food and craft vendors, organic vegetables, fresh cut flowers, children’s activities and much more every Saturday from May through September, at the historic Pickering Barn, 1730 10th Ave NW. • Art Walk (Spring & Summer) – Front Street will turn into an open-air gallery the first Friday of every month from May through September as vendors and musicians line the street. • Fenders on Front Street (Father’s Day, June 19) – Vintage cars from all over the state will be parked along Front Street on Father’s Day. FUN FACTS (from Issaquah History Museums)
• Issaquah’s first female mayor, Stella Alexander, was elected in March 1932 and took office three months later. However, she wasn’t able to fulfill her whole term, because her position was recalled less than two years later on Jan. 2, 1934.
• In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed William Pickering as fifth territorial governor of Washington. Pickering located in the valley four years later and purchased 320 acres, which are now covered by Interstate 90 and retail centers.
• In November 1971, a man that called himself D.B. Cooper hijacked a flight from Portland to Seattle. He

History Nestled amongst the Squak, Cougar, and Tiger Mountain sits the City of Issaquah with a rich history that leads back to the mid-1800s. Issaquah has not always been known by its current name, but instead was first known as “Squak Valley.” In 1892, the area was incorporated as Gilman to honor Daniel Hunt Gilman, a prominent resident of Seattle who founded the railroad. However, in 1899 residents of Gilman petitioned the state to change the
name to Issaquah and won. The origin of the name is the Native American word “ishquowh,” which Snoqualmie tribal leaders say means “the sound of water birds.” The first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1860s. Coal was discovered shortly after, but it was too expensive to ship across the lakes by barge, so the area became a major producer of hops. Hops were picked by Chinese and Native American laborers, and then shipped to Seattle for brewing. In 1889 the railroad finally came to Issaquah, and a
demanded $200,000 in $20 bills and four civilian parachutes be delivered to him when the flight landed. The FBI turned to the Issaquah Skyport for the parachutes – located where Costco headquarters now stand – and Issaquah police investigator Ed Mott and a state trooper delivered the parachutes to Cooper. Cooper forced the airplane to take flight with a small crew, and somewhere over southwest Washington he parachuted off into the night. The crime remains a mystery to this day.
coal mining boomtown was born. Soon there was a bustling town with boarding houses, hardware stores, and saloons. Logging also became a local industry. Coal mining began to dwindle in the 1930s and logging also began to slow down. The town’s population remained around 1,000 until the late 1940s when the first bridge was built over Lake Washington, making Seattle more accessible. It was then that Issaquah began to grow. Today there are more than 33,000 residents.

• The first settlement in the area was a Hudson Bay Company trapper’s cabin at the south end of Lake Sammamish.

The district put a bond measure on the spring 2016 ballot to fund two new elementary schools, a middle school and high school, while renovating and expanding several existing campuses. In the last 10 years, the district consistently ranked in the top five state school districts on state testing, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. It holds an on-time graduation rate of 93 percent, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Only 15 years ago, the district served less than 9,000 students in 13 schools. Now, nearly 19,000 students are enrolled in the 2015-2016 school year. There are more than 20 schools in the district, which span 110 square miles in seven municipalities. The Issaquah School District is the 15th largest in the state of Washington. In all, the district is made up of 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, three comprehensive high schools and one alternative high school. Those numbers will soon grow.
