Weather in Western Washington is generally mild all year round. Extremely hot or cold weather is very rare, although a day or two of snow usually occurs in the winter.

Celebrations There’s no doubt that Bremerton and Kitsap County residents like to have a good time and enjoy family-oriented activities. That’s why the community plays host to numerous fun activities including: First Friday Arts Walk, as the name implies, is held the first Friday of every month. Galleries, museums and businesses in downtown Bremerton, Manette and the Charleston District stay open late to provide ample opportunity to enjoy Bremerton’s culture and unique shops.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade gives you an opportunity to be Irish for the day. Don your green garb, head to downtown Bremerton and join the festive parade. Everyone’s welcome! This annual gathering is coordinated by the Downtown Bremerton Association.

Armed Forces Festival, coordinated by the Bremerton Chamber, is our special “thank you” to the hard-working men and women of our Armed Forces.

Bremerton has long had the distinction of coordinating the nation’s largest and longest-running Armed Forces Day Parade on the third Saturday of May. The parade began in 1948 – two years before Armed Forces Day became a federally recognized holiday. People from all over the Pacific Northwest come out every year to enjoy over 100 parade entries plus dozens of military entries and more than 20 marching bands.

Kitsap Harbor Festival on Memorial Day weekend takes place on the waterfronts of both Bremerton and Port Orchard and includes tall ships, vendor booths, farmers markets, classic car show, Seagull Calling Festival, Taste of Kitsap, live music, beer gardens, and more! You are invited to attend a memorial Service aboard the historic USS Turner Joy on Monday morning.

The West Sound Senior Games, coordinated by the City of Bremerton’s Parks and Recreation Department, are held the second week of July. Each year, approximately 200 athletes

ages 50 and up participate at athletic venues throughout Kitsap County. The competition features basketball, bowling, disc golf, swimming, table tennis, tennis and much more.

Kitsap Wine Festival is an enjoyable walk-around event featuring wine tasting from more than thirty Northwest wineries. New in 2010, the Kitsap Wine Festival featured on-site wine purchasing so that guests have the opportunity to purchase the wines they have sampled with all net proceeds supporting the Harrison Medical Center Foundation. Delicious cuisine will be provided by local establishments. Live music, waterfront vistas, food and wine combine with the beautiful Harborside Fountain Park venue to create the perfect summertime atmosphere and experience.

Kitsap County Fair and Stampede Rodeo is our community’s five-day fair at the end of August. Attendees are treated to dozens of toe-tapping musical acts, farm animals galore and plenty of food. Cowboys consistently rate the Stampede Rodeo, as one of the best rodeos in the nation!

Bremerton Brewfest presented by the Washington Beer Commission Blackberry Festival on Labor Day Weekend signals the last celebration of the summer on Labor Day Weekend. The Downtown Bremerton Rotary Club coordinates this blockbuster event on the Boardwalk.

Thousands of people take advantage of great weather, fun activities, live music and games for the kids. And don’t forget to sample all the blackberry goodies for sale. Yum! An easy ferry ride from Seattle delivers guests just steps away from the event location. Plentiful parking is available at Kitsap Conference Center garage at a nominal fee.

Manettefest is also celebrated in September in Bremerton’s quaint Manette neighborhood. Celebrations typically feature a pancake breakfast, “The World’s Shortest

Parade” and a full day of live music, street vendors and raffles. It’s a great day for neighbors and visitors alike! Organized by the Manette Business Association Safe Trick-or-Treating Downtown on Halloween brings out all the little ones in their Halloween finery. In addition to candy and gifts, hayrides and storytelling are part of the fun. If you’re brave, include a visit to the USS Turner Joy, which is transformed into a “Haunted Ship” for the occasion.

Winter Fest is highlighted by the arrival of Santa downtown and in Manette as well as the formal lighting of Christmas trees. Held in conjunction with December’s First Friday Arts Walk, this family-friendly event is a wonderful tradition! The kids will certainly have a great time at this oldfashioned holiday celebration.

Lighted Boat Parades take place in mid-December. These beautiful boats can be seen along Kitsap County’s waterways on December weekends. Sparkling lights are mirrored on the water as boats glide along the shoreline. Wave to Santa as he calls out to good boys and girls on the waterfront.

Shopping Restaurants, accommodations and other businesses can be found along Kitsap Way into the city from Highway 3. The Charleston Business District features several local retailers, service providers and unique restaurants.

Downtown Bremerton and the Harborside District feature a mix of galleries, specialty shops, cafĂŠs, banks and offices. Ferries provide regular service to the Seattle area from Bremerton, Kingston, Bainbridge Island and Port Orchard. In fact, Washington State Ferries operates one of the most extensive ferry services in the nation. In addition, Kitsap Transit operates a private passenger-only ferry service between Bremerton and Port Orchard, which runs every half hour.

Kitsap Transit also provides affordable service in an expansive bus route with access services and regular vanpools available. Paratransit Services assists disabled and disadvantaged residents.

Bremerton National Airport, operated by the Port of Bremerton, boasts one of the longest runways in Western Washington.

The Port has easy rail access for companies with shipping needs and has an agreement with the Port of Grays Harbor to allow easy access from the Pacific Coast directly to the Port of Bremerton. This innovative agreement dramatically cuts shipping time for savvy businesses.

The Chamber and You ….

The Bremerton Chamber of Commerce was initially formed as the Bremerton Board of Trade in 1904. The name was changed to the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce in 1907 and became incorporated in 1938.

It’s interesting to note that the Treasurer of the Board of Directors was William Gates, grandfather of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The Gates family owned a furniture store in downtown Bremerton and William Gates signed the Chamber’s Articles of Incorporation.

Although the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th birthday in 2007, most people would be surprised to know that chambers of commerce existed in this country before we even became a

country! The first chambers of commerce were formed in the colonies in the 1760’s.

And they’ve been growing stronger ever since.

Like most chambers of commerce, the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce is a private, non-profit membership organization.

Our mission is to promote and support our member businesses and provide leadership to enhance a positive business environment.

This mission has helped the Bremerton Chamber become one of the largest chambers on the Kitsap Peninsula as well as one of the most effective chambers in delivering benefits to our members and the community.

Businesses and individuals join the Bremerton Chamber for a number of reasons. Many join for networking and advertising opportunities. Some members want to take advantage of member to member discounts. And most understand that supporting the Bremerton Chamber

of Commerce is a terrific way to support the community, businesses and our local economy.

The Chamber offers many in-house services including extensive visitor and relocation assistance, and multiple networking opportunities.

In the West Sound area, with meeting sites from Tacoma to Poulsbo, the program is only a few years old. It was started in 2013, with their first season in 2014 with about 90 participants.

Now, they’re on their fifth season, and participation is expected to include more than 200 girls.

“There’s interest, there’s a need for it, and it’s really incredible to see so many girls go through the program and see the transformations that they make over the 10 weeks,” Bearbower said.

Throughout the program, participants not only train for their first 5K run, but they also

BREMERTON — Girls on the Run of West Sound is “really about empowering girls and building confidence through running,” said

executive director Rachel Bearbower.

Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in third through eighth grade. The program lasts for 10 weeks, with two lessons a week, and occurs twice a year, in spring and fall.

Girls on the Run is a nation-wide nonprofit with the mission to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running,” according to the website, www. girlsontherunwestsound.org. It was started 20 years ago in North Carolina, and now comprises more than 250 councils cross-country,

learn some important lessons, said Bearbower.

She said the curriculum is “really three parts.”

The first is learning to understand who you are on the inside.

“The girls (learn to) understand who they are and what makes them special,” Bearbower explained.

Next is learning to value relationships, and how to choose your friends.

PORT ORCHARD — A Bremerton man was among the three people who were arrested March 3 by Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office detectives for their alleged involvement in a cocaine dealing operation.

Jacob Ryan Tullis, 20, of Bremerton, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance.

Tullis was allegedly working out of a Port Orchard apartment with Johnathon Michael Grant, 25, and Samuel Grant Means, 22, both of Port Orchard, who were also charged in the case.

BREMERTON — View Ridge Elementary will be growing between school years, with the addition of a new portable classroom expected to be installed sometime after June.

For $135,061, the Bremerton School District is purchasing a portable “from a company that had an available portable that our staff have had good success dealing with,” said BSD communication coordinator Patty Glaser.

Structures, Inc., provided the school board a breakdown of the cost, which is based on conditions such as the portable’s site being flat, level and truck accessible; utility and plumbing connections being made by the customer; foundations being pressure-treated wood pony walls set above grade; and more.

The portable itself will be a 28-foot-by-64-foot double modular classroom without a restroom.

It will have a nylon carpet and a standard 28-foot ramp. The school board unanimously approved the purchase at the March 3 meeting.

“The portable will address our

capacity for next year on the east side (of Bremerton),” Glaser said, “but it is not a long-term solution, as our enrollment increases and the state decreases class size.”

Glaser said the district continues “to look ahead at space capacity” while keeping in mind the goal of smaller class sizes, as well as where population growth is projected to occur within the district.

“As we look forward to the replacement of a school like Naval Avenue and growing needs in East Bremerton, we will need to make some decisions about looking at a bond,” Glaser said.
