Tacoma Bikeshare Open House Feb. 25 By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma will host a Bikeshare Open House in February as part of a planning study under way for a possible bikeshare program and pilot project in Tacoma. Bikeshare allows people to check out bicycles for short trips around the city. Locally, the City of Seattle partnered with Pronto Cycle Share to roll out a bikeshare system in October of 2014 that includes 500 bikes and 50 stations throughout the city. It hasn't been an easy ride. Last month, The Seattle Times reported Seattle's bikeshare program was 'teetering' on insolvency due to low ridership, and the City of Seattle would need to spend $1.4 million to save the system. Still, programs have been created in at least two-dozen U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.; Austin, Tex.; Boston, Mass.; Denver, Colo.; and New York City. According to City of Tacoma staff, a bikeshare system represents a unique opportunity for the City to increase the use of bicycles for relatively short-range travel, reduce the negative impacts of single occupancy vehicles and encourage a shift to healthier and other more sustainable modes of transportation. Two years ago, the City of Tacoma hired the consulting firm Alta Planning + Design to complete a very preliminary bikeshare feasibility study. The City is currently working with Toole Design Group on a more comprehensive study. Last week, the Tacoma Daily Index published a feature interview with City of Tacoma Active Transportation Coordinator and Senior Planner Diane Wiatr to discuss bikeshare in Tacoma (see "Wheels For Hire: Is bikeshare part of Tacoma’s transportation future?" Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 5, 2016) The Tacoma Bikeshare Open House will be held on Thurs., Feb. 25, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the Tacoma Campus of The Evergreen State College – Main Hall, located at 1210 6th Ave. To read the Tacoma Daily Index's complete and comprehensive coverage of the Tacoma Bikeshare Planning Study, visit our Web site for the following articles: — Wheels For Hire: Is bikeshare part of Tacoma’s transportation future?
