The Greater Poulsbo Business Economy Defined by Diversity There are more than 2,000 businesses in the 98370 zip code, and about half of them gross less than $500,000 in annual sales. Poulsbo is defined by, and has been built by, a diverse group of intrepid entrepreneurs chasing dreams and lifestyles, and sharing their passions with customers locally and beyond. While Poulsbo is home to a large number of small businesses, we also host some impressively large producers, light industrial manufacturers, and companies poised for tremendous growth, including international sales. Some examples include Truelife, Watson Furniture, TMF Inc., Blue Frog Solar, and several others. Companies like Town & Country Markets and Marine View Beverage—both of whom top

The Greater Poulsbo Business Economy $100 million in annual sales—have established their headquarters here in Poulsbo. But about 72 percent of greater Poulsbo businesses have fewer than five employees. In our region, we have about the same number of attorneys as we have restaurants, and slightly more insurance agents than dentists. The largest single professional group here is physicians and surgeons. We are also a mecca of sorts for highend and specialty medical services, such as acupuncture and Chinese medicine (Acupuncture & Wellness Center, for example, is one of the largest Chinese Medical Clinics in the United States), and the numbers of our alternative treatment centers are growing. Peninsula Cancer Center, home of some of the finest oncology specialists in the nation, has treated more than 1700 patients, pioneered a recovery program called

More than 400 new businesses opened up for business in Poulsbo in the past three years, and our downtown business district, which only a few years ago had many empty storefronts, is now completely full, with a waiting list for other businesses that are looking for space to open up (see cover photo). Certainly, not all new businesses will thrive—but in a community of our size, the growth is encouraging. Growth means strength. In the City of Poulsbo alone, sales tax revenues have climbed, year over year, with double-digit numbers that are among the highest in the State of Washington. Commercial and residential sales are up, as are home sales prices, hotel occupancy rates,

Still, the Pacific Northwest has an allure, worldwide. Nature and outdoor adventure are easy to enjoy and appreciate in our neck of the woods, with a temperate climate, and access to unique water activities and recreational boating, as well as hiking and other mountain-bound sports. Businesses want to be able to offer all the opportunities of the Pacific Northwest to their employees, but they also need to

stay connected and engaged – and many of them are finding they can do that without the hassles of a big city by moving to a neighboring community like Poulsbo. Poulsbo won’t be found on most “business relocation” lists – partially because we are not seeking unrestrained or unplanned growth. We are, as a community, committed to maintaining our small town charm. But growth is happening before our very eyes, investors are showing their interest in tangible ways, and we understand why: we offer a great place to live and work – a wonderful place to raise a family. Still, Poulsbo has flown under the radar, largely undiscovered for many decades. When people do discover us, it’s usually because they first visit us as

tourists. Some of those tourists, who like what they see, decide they want it long term. And some of those who want it, actually return for good. Because of its proximity to Seattle, the Port of Poulsbo in Liberty Bay has for years been a popular destination for Seattle-based boat owners who like to travel outside of Seattle, but prefer shorter trips. American Cruise Lines now stops in our port, bringing tourists from across the United States. A Canadian bus line that specializes in visitors from the Far East makes downtown Poulsbo a regular stop many months of the year. And on most weekends, our roads are inundated with bicycle traffic. Our historic downtown waterfront is picture-postcard perfect in the eyes of weary big-city visitors.

It’s a welcome respite for those yearning for seasons that don’t swing from brutal cold to blistering. It’s a Norman Rockwell painting of unlocked car doors, friendly locals, and no need after-dark security guards. It’s a wonderland for those used to prairie lands, hot valleys, humid swamps, or frozen lakes. We offer pristine waterways on the one hand, and majestic mountains on the other, together with a rain shadow that keeps our rainfall well below the inches experienced on the Seattle-side of the Puget Sound. like Malaysia, Germany, Mexico City, Australia, Japan, Norway, and others, as well as every state in the United States. Poulsbo is becoming known, for a lot more than our famous Sluy’s Bakery, and some of that is showing up in our growth. People come here for the experience, not so much the place. When they discover the place, and all we have to offer, many of them decide to stay.

Industry in North Kitsap Greater Poulsbo used to be known as a bedroom community, with most residents commuting by ferry to Seattle, or Edmonds, and beyond for work. Many still do, but recently a handful of light industrial parks, mostly hidden from the view our main roads, have developed that are home to many of our local manufacturers and non-retail businesses.

A Bright Future Ahead Naval Base Kitsap, just a few miles from Poulsbo, is the second largest naval base in the country. The U.S. Navy’s activity helps drive and sustain the healthy economy throughout Kitsap County, but in Poulsbo’s northern end of the county, we are much less dependent on the defense industry than our Kitsap County neighbors to the south. North Kitsap is defined more by our business diversity, primarily in education, manufacturing, and tourism. The number of businesses who are joining the Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce and renewing their memberships has been rising. We are nearing 450 members and will easily exceed that number by the end of 2016. With the perspective that “a rising tide raises all boats,” the Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce will be focused throughout 2016 on finding ways to help our members capitalize on the growth, as well as sustain it. We will be guided by our newly created long range strategic plan, which will help our organization and our members be better prepared for “the cycle of seasons” through at least 2025.
