Trestle replacement at Railroad Bridge Park is under way with first span Sequim Gazette staff
The first span of the nearly 750-foot steel bridge across the Dungeness River at Railroad Bridge Park was placed Wednesday, Nov. 4. The new bridge under way connects with the historic 150-foot bridge, but replaces the trestle that was damaged during February flooding. Using modern building materials and techniques, the bridge is designed to be more conducive to the natural processes of the river and serve pedestrians’ needs. The bridge and corresponding portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail are anticipated to open by the end of December, weather permitting. Nordland Construction NW is the contractor for construction of the replacement trestle using Crews set in place the first spans of a replacement trestle on Nov. 4. Hope to halt homelessness
Regional forum focuses on collaborative approach by ALANA LINDEROTH Sequim Gazette
The Clallam County Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness is on the cusp of its last year and there still are people without permanent housing, access to temporary shelter and some without any form of shelter at all.
That’s not to say the work done within the past 10 years has been devoid of success. Overall homelessness in Clallam County has dropped by 78 percent since 2006, from 997 individuals without permanent housing to 224, according to the 2015 Clallam County Forum Book on Homelessness.

Local clubs and pools are beginning to see a trickle down effect following the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center’s closure. It’s been nearly two weeks since SARC closed on Oct. 30 and former users await the feasibility study for the Clallam County YMCA to tentatively take over managerial duties. In the meantime, some local businesses are either raising rates to make way for the demand or setting up deals to hook new customers. Port Angeles’ William Shore Memorial Pool already has seen an increase in its usership from Sequim, reports Steven Burke, pool district executive director. While it’s still early to compare general admissions from October 2014 and 2015, Burke said they’ve seen 326 new memberships and passes added from Sequim from Oct. 1-Nov. 5. Burke said they’ve also received 119 swim lessons sign-ups from non-district residents and seen about $14,000 in revenue over that span, too. Non-district users do come from the west side, he said, but “that’s pretty consistent. Mostly it’s from the Sequim side” including more than a dozen swimmers from the Masters Swim Club. Any Sequimites considering the PA pool take note that its board of commissioners
