Customer trust important to business longevity By JESSIE STENSLAND

There’s not one key to succeeding in business, according to Gloria Carothers, owner of the Jewelry Gallery. She said it’s been a combination of factors that has allowed her to successfully run a store for 28 years — most of those years in downtown Oak Harbor, where so many other businesses have failed. It helped, she said, that she is an Oak Harbor native and has been very involved in the community over the years. She said she was lucky to have the support of people in the field early on. She followed sound business practices and changed with the times. Most important, she said, was earning the trust and loyalty of her customers. “This is a business where people have to trust you,” she said. “It’s

important that customers know you’re there for them.” Carothers said it’s unusual for a woman to start her own jewelry business. People she meets at jewelry shows often assume that she either inherited the business from her parents or runs it with her husband. Nevertheless, she was able to succeed. She said some jewelry manufacturers in the male-dominated industry were very kind to her and put their trust in her early on. And she earned that trust. “In all my years of business, I’ve never been late in paying someone whom I owe money,” she said. As a result, she said she has a “No. 1 rating” in the Red Book, the jewelry industry’s main credit rating document. Tucked inside the Old Town

Mall, the little jewelry store is a place where generations of family members return to purchase everlasting keepsakes. Carothers is firmly rooted in the community, down to her Dutch pedigree. Her father, Peter Hulswit, was involved in the Dutch resistance to the Nazi occupation during World War II. He helped

save Dutch Jews and downed American and British pilots. He was eventually caught and sent to a concentration camp. Hulswit had a friend in Oak Harbor, so he brought his wife, Helen, and 7-year-old Gloria to the community in 1957. SEE CAROTHERS, PAGE 3

Ott & Murphy Wines Deb Stilwell

“Despite the time and money I’ve spent on wine education, for me wine isn’t meant to impress, but is meant to be enjoyed at a table, with food and laughter, and shared with people you love”—Deb Stilwell.

Wednesdays this fall, Deb Stilwell will host wine appreciation/education classes (Wine Know Wednesdays) at Ott & Murphy’s (OM’s) tasting room in Langley. Deb has been teaching the Northwest Region about the wines of the world for years, in Colorado, in Portland, and at The Wine Academy at South Seattle College. Deb’s wine credentials are as impressive as her joyous passion for the wines she enjoys so much. As CSW, FWS, and WSET Certified, Advanced, she has more letters behind her name than in her name! First certified Advanced by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, Deb later cemented her

educational credentials with a Specialist of Wine degree from The Society of Wine Educators. Then reaching for the ultimate in wine scholarship, Deb passed her French Wine Scholar Certification test with honors. Deb spent twelve years working in the Woodinville wine scene, for Columbia Winery, Brian Carter Cellars, and as wine educator at DeLille Cellars for many years. Deb and her husband moved to Whidbey in July of 2014. Evaluating local wineries, she determined that Ott & Murphy made the elegant, well-crafted European style wines she loves. “Getting the best grapes from wonderful Washington vineyards they craft them to allow the glorious personality of each shine through.” So it was an easy decision to work at OM’s beautiful tasting room in Langley. Join Deb at Ott & Murphy’s and explore the world of wines with an accomplished and passionate guide.

Cheers!

Hulswit was also well-known in town. He and his wife were the original owners of the Dairy Valley milk barn in the city. He volunteered as a sports trainer at the high school for 20 years. Carothers said her love of jewelry came from her grandmother, who visited from Holland and gave her gifts of beautiful pieces. Carothers was a school teacher for 25 years in Oak Harbor. In 1987, she had the chance to purchase a jewelry store in East Seattle from a retiring couple and jumped in. In 1991, she opened the Jewelry Gallery but continued teaching part-time until 1997. Carothers said she’s always thought it was important to be active and engaged in the community. Each year, for example, she sponsors the Diamonds in a Glass raffle for the Boys and Girls Club and donates a piece of jewelry

worth $3,000 to $10,000. She’s a past president of the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce and has been involved in the Soroptimists and Operation Decoration. “You don’t do these kinds of things in anticipation of getting anything in return,” she said. “You do it because you want to.” In recent years, she’s expanded her business. She buys gold, silver, diamonds, coins and sterling flatwear. She also buys estate jewelry and offers consignments on some pieces. In addition, she offers a a full gamut of repair and custom jewelry services. “There will always be a place for brick-and-mortar jewelry stores because we provide services you can’t get anywhere else,” she said. “You get to see it. You get to try it on.”

Mikayla is often at the Bayview Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings with a variety of hand-blown glass items and yard art. This winter Mikayla plans to expand to off-site markets including the Winter Market at Bayview. “I love everything about working with handblown glass, from start to finish,” she said. “Once you are in glass you can’t stop,” she added.

Laurie Davenport Owner

Custom Embroidery: We specialize in company logos, gift orders, and with over 400,000 designs we can find you that perfect embroidery item. Brittany, our embroidery manager, makes samples in store. We can digitize your logo and create a sample for your approval. We also offer a take-home embroidery clothing catalog for you to review and choose at your leisure.

For over twenty years Casey’s Crafts has been a source for craft supplies on South Whidbey. It was always a favorite shopping destination for me and my family. My daughter Lucy learned to knit there and bought beads for her handmade bracelets.

When the store was about to close ten years ago I took the plunge to buy it and try my hand at retail. With the help of manager Patty Currier and the rest of the amazing staff it has been my privilege to transition from my career as an LPN to business owner. We stock everything from art supplies to zippers. Lots of support from the local community keeps a smile on my face!

With 17 years filing taxes and handling tax resolution issues, along with working at the IRS for over six years, I have come to understand how to handle IRS personnel and situations requiring tax resolution. I understand the ins and outs of the IRS and can navigate through the bureaucracy for our clients. I thoroughly enjoy telling the IRS they are wrong, especially when I have the documentation to prove it! Since I began working at Jones Accounting Associates, I continue to save our clients’ money the IRS has told them they owe, but do not. The current total is $1.5 Million dollars since December 2013. That total continues to grow on almost a daily basis. My husband, Senior Chief David San Angelo, and I have lived in Oak Harbor for a total of 11 years and plan to retire here. Both our children were born at Navy Hospital Oak Harbor. We enjoy boating, crabbing and being with our family. Since I’ve been working at Jones Accounting I feel as if I have an extended work family as well. If you need tax resolution services, tax preparation or tax advice visit our family office at any time.

I am the calm and friendly face that greets you as you come through the front door of our “home” at Jones Accounting Associates. As a trusted member of the Jones Accounting family, you have my word that I will treat you with compassion and respect always. I promise to provide you with the peace of mind that comes naturally with utmost personal and confidential customer service, compassionate listening, and guaranteed privacy of your financial and tax-related matters. It truly is a pleasure for me to work hand-in-hand with our tax preparers and our entire staff. Since joining Jones Accounting in 2013, I have come to understand and appreciate the hard work and knowledge that goes into the many services we provide. From tax preparation, IRS resolution/ representation, estate/trust planning, and retirement planning; to payroll processing, bookkeeping, and business consultations, we truly are your all-in-one service provider. I am proud to call Oak Harbor my home for more than 40 years! I can think of no other place I would rather live and work-simply put, Whidbey Island is simply beautiful! My husband, Dennis Purin, Jr., is a local truck driver. Together, we enjoy gardening, cooking, and mentoring youth with a local non-profit organization. Jones Accounting Associates is not only the place where I work, but it is a place where I enjoy great friendships and a family atmosphere. I hope you will come see me, and allow me to introduce you to our great family of tax pre parers, bookkeepers, and staff!

Kathy Jones, of Jones Accounting Associates, is proud to provide excellent customer service. Whether it’s providing frequent communication with clients, timely filing of all tax returns, Jones and her team go the extra mile. They are experts at resolving problems with the Internal Revenue Service, and specialize in nonprofit organizations and in providing them with accounting services.

Jones Accounting, which employs as many as 12 people during the height of tax preparation season, not only provides services for nonprofits, but also small businesses that are looking to grow, tax preparations for estates and trusts, corporations, LLCs and individuals. “Helping people solve financial problems, and the years of contact that we maintain with our clients, are the most enjoyable aspects of the job,” said Kathy. “ We are able to help nonprofits with their fundraisers, thus helping them help others.

I love meeting new people and hearing their great stories of why they may be leaving or coming to this beautiful Island. Every file brings new and exciting challenges and I’m happy to be a part of each successful closing and honored to work with so many wonderful people in our community. Teamwork is key to our success so “thank you” to all who are part of our team. & tle

Marissa Skaar: I was born San Diego, CA and my military family brought me to beautiful Whidbey Island which then provided me with an interesting and mixed upbringing where the strict Military lifestyle met with the Real Estate madness. Along with this unique upbringing, I grew to work by one motto in escrow and that is “it takes a village to raise a file” meaning that the teamwork of everyone involved in a single transaction is the number one key in raising each transaction to completion. I am grateful for the multiple personalities I am lucky enough to work with so we all can obtain solutions to challenges, to enjoy the benefits of numerous accomplishments, and to provide superb customer service to make our clients worlds a happier place.
