Classic car club brings knowledge, helping hands for its members By DAN RICHMAN drichman@whidbeynewstroup.com

Forget dealer service on these babies — it hasn’t existed for years. The owners of Whidbey Island’s roughly 60 Model A Fords maintain their cars themselves, attacking more difficult problems as a group during occasional work days. “There’s nothing we can’t fix,” said Jerry Lubinski, a longtime member of the Whidbey Island A’s car club. “If you’ve got a problem, bring it up to my garage and we’ll fix it.” Model A’s were manufactured from late 1927 through 1932, with a total production of 4.9 million.

They followed the Model T, which was made from 1908 through 1927. About 500,000 Model A’s still exist, Lubinski estimated. The Island A’s has about 35 members — many in their 70s or even their 80s — and most own one or more cars. The Model A’s are sturdy, simple vehicles that don’t require much maintenance, said Lubinski and Gary Formahls, the club’s president. The fourcylinder, 40-horsepower vehicles have mechanical brakes, gravity-feed carburetors, non-pressurized cooling systems and easyto-set timing. “Keep oil, water and

Reproduction parts are easy to find and perfectly acceptable except in cars that are competing in shows, said club member Richard Hansen, who owns two Model A’s. There is strength in numbers, in terms of both know-how and parts, the club members stressed. “That’s the advantage of being in a club: when you need help, there are people to help you,” said Keith Cavender. “We share parts and experience.” Touring in a Model A is a pleasure, since the typical speed of 35 mph allows gazing at the scenery along the back roads, the club

The cars are significantly less safe than contemporar y models, though some club members equip theirs with seat belts and turn signals. The small, dim tail lights mean some members avoid driving after dark. And nothing can be done about the location of the gas tank in some models — directly in front of the driver. Insurance is reasonable — often $300 a year or less, with no restrictions on how often the cars can be driven. Model A’s in 1927 retailed between roughly

$385 and $570, depending on model. That’s $5,100 to $7,600 in today’s dollars. But many of the Whidbey A’s members’ cars are worth far more, depending on their rarity. Formahls’ 1930 “blindback” model, with no rear windows, would sell for $18,000-$20,000, he estimated. His deluxe delivery truck is worth $45,000$50,000. His pickup with apple green wheels would sell for $12,000 - $13,000. Among the most valuable on the island must be Lubinski’s totally restored 1931 tow truck. He found it rusting in a North Seattle warehouse, having been

converted away from its tow truck configuration into a flatbed. Lubinski converted it back, mounting an original towing crane he found in Columbus, Ohio. One of only three remaining from the 530 that were built, it’s available for $70,000 but is probably worth $100,000, Lubinski said. To buy an average, restored, drivable Model A today would cost around $10,000, estimated Hansen. n For more information: http://www.whidbeymodelaclub.com/

Steering clear of distracted driving Safety tips for families traveling on the road

The dangers of distracted driving affect thousands of lives each year. Are you taking the proper steps to ensure a safe driving experience for you, your passengers and others on the road? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the numbers are all too real, with 3,154 people killed in 2013 due to distracted driving on the road. While many states have adopted laws to crack down on phone usage behind the wheel, real change starts at home, with drivers pledging to adopt simple safety measures and ensuring family members also make the commitment. As advocates for safe driving everywhere, the car experts at Edmunds.com offer these tips for safe travels behind the wheel:

gency, keep distractions out of sight while driving. Turn your phone on silent, “airplane mode” or off completely before you enter your vehicle. Placing your phone in the glove box, the back seat or the trunk — or even just in a bag — can also keep the temptation of answering your calls or texts at bay, so you can focus on the road instead.

Just drive Many other activities can also be distracting in the car, such as eating, drinking, managing your entertainment or even putting on makeup. Make sure your car is used only for getting you from point A to point B, and save the other activities for your destination. Make it a family priority. Discuss the responsibilities that come with driving a vehicle and the hazards that accompany distracted driving. Set rules for your whole family so teen drivers know that you too are engaged in creating a safe zone in your own vehicle. Be a good role model even before your children

Seven reasons to drive to your holiday destination

With the right accessories, you can take your truck performance to another level, whether your need is fun or function.

Add function and fun to your pickup truck From tailgates to fishing trips to home improvement projects, you depend on your truck to take you from work to play and back again. With the right accessories, you can take your truck performance to another level, whether your need is fun or function. These must-have accessories, compiled by the experts at Pace Edwards, amplify your truck’s versatility to help you make the most of your pickup. 1. Light your way. Whether you arrive at your campsite after dark or stay on an outdoor job well past sundown, make your task easier with supplemental lighting. Rooftop fog lights allow you to see in the dark no matter where the road takes you. Some can even be turned on and off, and repositioned by remote control, for added

convenience. 2. Keep it covered. Protect all the essential gear for your next home improvement job or a weekend at the lake with a tonneau cover, such as the Switchblade from Pace Edwards. Install Switchblade in minutes using just a wrench and screwdriver. Then, when you’re back to everyday use, the cover retracts in seconds and remains out of site, never obstructing rear visibility. For maximum versatility, the Switchblade can be completely removed when you need total truck bed access and maximum cargo capacity. 3. Add an extension. Long loads are no problem for your rig when you install a truck bed extender. This handy accessory increases your overall hauling area, eliminating the need for one more

Starting at $179 installed

trip to get the job done. It also creates extra space for a cooler filled with icy beverages to celebrate the end of a long week. Many extenders can be stored flat in the cab when not in use, and some even adjust to accommodate roof-top hauling. 4. Employ a hauling helper. When you regularly transport big items such as plywood or ladders, a rack is the perfect solution. When the weekend arrives, ditch the work gear and re-purpose your rack to carry weekend equipment, such as a kayak or paddle board. 5. Hitch a ride. There is a wide range of tow hitches to meet nearly every imaginable use, from hauling a trailer full of tools to pulling a speedboat to a fun-filled destination. Start by determining your truck’s gross trailer weight and tongue weight limits, and then narrow down the features, such as rustresistant coating and the ability to tuck your hitch out of sight when it’s not in use. Whatever the task at hand, the right accessories help you get the most out of your pickup truck. (Family Features)

If the approaching holidays have you seeing dollar signs and cringing to avoid the stress the season brings, you may be relieved to know there is one simple step to help bypass many of the common holiday headaches. Traveling by vehicle costs less, is more convenient and is not as stressful as flying, according to the Car Care Council. “With gas prices below $3 per gallon in many parts of the country, more and more travelers are realizing the economic and hassle-free benefits of driving to their holiday destination,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A family of four can travel 1,000 miles round-trip by car for about the cost of a single airline ticket, so driving is the sensible option.” In addition to direct cost savings, travel by car offers a number of practical advantages over flying including: n Flexible agenda. Without the demands of a flight schedule dictating your timeline, you have the ability to leave when you want. And on the open road, there is no captain asking you to remain seated, so when the need arises, you can simply stop and stretch without worry. Calling your own shots by car, you also won’t risk being hampered by airline weather delays. n Skip the wait. Choose to travel by car and you can forget about waiting in long ticket counter and security lines. An added bonus, you’ll avoid driving in circles looking for an open parking space in the overflow lot miles from your terminal. n No luggage fees. Dodge those hefty charges and load your car up with as much luggage as you want — including wrapped gifts that don’t always make it through security intact. n Ride in comfort. While air travel may be expedient, it often comes at the cost of legroom and overall comfort. Traveling

Avoid long delays and maintain a flexible schedule by driving to your destination. by car also lets you forgo the company of strangers. n Familiar wheels. If deplaning and collecting your baggage isn’t enough, getting behind the wheel of an unfamiliar rental car or cramming your belongings into an overpriced taxi may be the final straw for your sanity. Traveling in your own car ensures you know how to operate all the features for a safe and comfortable ride. n Pet-friendly perks. Although some airlines allow pets to fly, the cost and logistics can be burdensome. Simply loading up your pet and their supplies in your vehicle is more convenient for you, and less likely to stress your four-legged friend. n An expanded menu. Your hunger is in your own hands when you travel by car. Whether you’re grabbing a quick re-fueling snack on the go or sampling the local fare, traveling by car gives you more and better meal options. Before you set out, be sure your car is in tip-top shape for a safe holiday travel. Request a free copy of the Car Care Council’s Car Care Guide at www.carcare. org for tips on regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. (Family Features)

Tips to save money at the pump As gas prices continue to drop, motorists should take advantage of their savings at the pump and invest it back into their vehicles. By spending a little now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers can multiply fuel savings and save more money at the pump, according to the Car Care Council. Here are a few simple steps for motorists to be car care aware to improve fuel efficiency and save money

in the long run: n Engine performance: Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of four percent. n Tire pressure: Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. n Motor oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer.

n Air filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles. n Gas cap: Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air. n For more tips to increase savings and fuel efficiency for your vehicle, visit www.carcare.org (Family Features)

onducting routine maintenance on your vehicle is necessary to maintain optimal performance and prevent costly repairs. As colder weather approaches, and with it the potential for treacherous road conditions, giving certain areas of your car special attention can also protect your safety. “Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety and reliability when severe winter weather strikes,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The following tips will help you learn how to care for the systems and features most likely to affect your safety as winter approaches. Learn about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair, and order a free copy of the council’s Car Care Guide, at www. carcare.org

Brakes The brake system is a car’s most important safety system. A faulty brake system may impede your ability to safely slow your vehicle in inclement driving conditions or avoid an accident. Brakes sustain normal wear and eventually need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons. Ignoring routine maintenance and letting brake pads wear too thin can lead to costly rotor and drum replacement, in addition to compromising your ability to execute a sudden stop safely. n Have your complete brake system thoroughly inspected annually and replace equipment as needed. n If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, you should have your brakes inspected. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing. n Don’t overlook the parking brake, which also may require adjustment or replacement parts.

Wheels and Tires When roads become wet or icy, the right wheels and tires can help ensure you have the traction you need to maintain control. Maintaining tire balance and wheel alignment reduces tire wear and improves handling and fuel economy. Tire replacement is necessary if the tread depth is below the minimum legal

As colder weather approaches, and with it the potential for treacherous road conditions, giving certain areas of your car special attention can also protect your safety. requirement, or if the sidewalls are severely cracked or punctured. In addition, normal wear and road conditions can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension system and disrupt the alignment, which in turn reduces optimum handling. n Use the “penny test” to check your tread; if you see Lincoln’s head above the tread, you are ready for new tires. n Have your car’s alignment checked at least annually or at the first sign of improper handling or uneven wear. n Check inflation pressure at least once a month (including the spare) and once per week in the winter. n Rotate and balance tires every 6,000 miles to avoid accelerated wear on shock absorbers and struts.

Battery Your battery should be securely mounted, with connections clean, tight and corrosion-

free. If the battery is three years old or more, it should be tested and replaced if necessary.

Headlights Headlights play a major role in safe driving; the chances for accidents increase if you can’t see or be seen. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility, signals and alerts other drivers, and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior. n If there is any doubt about whether or not your headlights should be on, turn them on. n Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights, making it difficult to be seen by others. n Make sure your headlights are properly aimed. If they aren’t, headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. n Don’t overdrive your headlights. You should be able to stop inside the illuminated

area; otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. n Replace dimming, rapidly blinking or non-functioning lights immediately, but check first to ensure a loose or faulty fuse isn’t the source of the problem.

Windshield Wipers The wiper system keeps excessive water, snow and dirt from building up on the windshield, maintaining clear visibility. Many factors can accelerate the replacement of wipers, including operating conditions, frequency of use, material and type of wipers and weather. n In general, replace blades every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering. n Be aware that some vehicles have two washer fluid reservoirs. Check levels monthly and use washer fluid only; do not use water. (Family Features)

Basic car care is the key to a long-lasting vehicle, improving its safety and dependability, says the Car Care Council. Following a routine maintenance program also makes financial sense since neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value. The Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your car operating at its best for the long haul: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

replace, if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay. 6. Check engine performance to deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.

2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.

7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.

3. Check the battery and

8. Inspect the steering and

suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

Buying a vehicle is a big decision and if you are somewhat prepared it can make the shopping process more efficient and enjoyable. To make wise decisions, it’s nice to understand and educate yourself. • First decide what car you want to buy.

• What can you afford? Some recommend getting preapproved in advance, but most consumers get a better rate at the dealership because they can shop a customer’s credit application to dozens of lenders. Local dealerships can also discount interest rates for their customers beating competing offers from another lender.

• Price your car and your trade-in. The price of a new car is usually negotiable. But how much of a discount can you expect? Ask the dealer about the latest incentives and rebates available for all new cars.

• As you search for a car, being more flexible about options and color, the wider the range of vehicles you’ll find for sale. Being flexible will also give you more leverage to negotiate a better price.

• Most dealers recommend when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle to check out Carfax.com. It will give you peace of mind on the particular vehicle you are interested in. Your dealer can provide you with the Carfax at no charge to you. • With the internet, shopping around is made much easier. Some shoppers still find this time-consuming and stressful. Buying from a reputable dealer with experience is helpful.

You should feel comfortable and sense that you can trust the sales person. It’s important to remember that a good deal isn’t just the lowest selling price… it’s a combination of the most streamlined, enjoyable shopping experience and the lowest out-the-door-cost. Sometimes the best deal is right in your own backyard. Where you buy and service your vehicle should also be a convenience consideration. Recycling your dollars back into your community is also a good thing.

• Review new car fees. Besides the cost of the car, you have to pay sales tax, registry fees and a documentation fee. Ask the dealer to breakdown all of the fees, review the figures carefully. An additional cost that can have real value is an extended auto warranty, which provides additional protection to buyers and could save you money in the long run. A good finance manager will also explain other extended warranties. • Signing of paperwork and delivery of your car: If purchasing a new car, let the salesperson give you a tour of your car. It is important to be familiar with the many features and safety devices, even though it will all be in your owner’s manual. Check that all the equipment is included, such as floor mats and DVD headphones. Make sure there are no dents or scratches on the body of the car. As you drive away…please enjoy your new car!
