eloved for its sheer physical beauty, quiet privacy, big skies, diverse landscape, mild climate, and wildlife, San Juan Island also has a distinct sense of the past. To understand the present, you need to understand the past – understand the island’s history. What may appear at first glance to be natural and undisturbed, most likely has a history all its own. A classic example of this would be less than two miles north of Friday Harbor off San Juan Valley Road. Reminiscent of a gentler time, holding a stature of its own, Zylstra Farm consists of 500+/- glorious south facing acres of verdant, pastoral country punctuated by a magnificent 50+/- acre lake. A rural patchwork quilt of fields and pasture, graced with open, gently rolling terrain, it is very quiet and private. You can hear the silence. To stand at the gate and gaze down the valley over False Bay, the Straits, and beyond to the Olympic Mountains is mesmerizing, to be sure. One can almost visualize the Native Americans in the late 1800’s, drifting inland, wandering up the valley from False Bay, in search of fresh water. The farm was later known for its agricultural accomplishments and equestrian potential as October Farm and Wooden Shoe Farm. It is estimated that the original residence was built in the late 1800’s with a second home built in 1920. The first recorded sale dates back to 1937, with numerous transactions following. With every transaction and every owner, the homes and numerous outbuildings were carefully maintained and upgraded to make it what it is today. The magic is still there, reflecting the best of the old to offer a sense of preserving the past. While two miles from Friday Harbor may seem a short distance now, try to imagine the commute in the early days when there were few roads to even ride horseback. Communications were slow. People were, by necessity, self-sufficient. They raised turkeys, chickens, cattle, sheep, and pigs and put up food from their orchards and vegetable gardens. They hunted rabbits, birds, and deer. Survival depended upon community; they bartered and shared. So much we don’t understand about island history is simply because we don’t understand the way life was lived at that time. The early settlers came to the islands for the aura of peace and contentment that seems to be the island’s trademark then as it is now. The island continues to echo those early times.
