Whidbey Kite Fliers take to Camp Casey skies Kites of all shapes, sizes and colors will hopefully fill the sky above Camp Casey this weekend during the Whidbey Island Kite Festival. The festival is Saturday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 20 starting with registration at 9 a.m. each day and events starting at 10 a.m. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Olympic Mountains and Admiralty Inlet, the kite festival features ground and air displays of color and imagination. Activities include kids’ kitemaking, beginning sport kite lessons and sport kite demonstrations. One of the festival’s most popular children’s event, the Teddy Bear Drop, is slated for 1 p.m. both days. The event is for children ages 10 and younger. Children will also have the opportunity to learn how to fly a sport kite and play various kite games. A mass ascension, in which anyone can participate, will be at noon both days. The first 50 people to sign up and participate in each event will receive a specialissue event pin.

A popular children’s event last year was the Running of the Bols. This year the kite festival will include a Teddy Bear Drop, children’s kite building and kite lessons. A mass ascension is where everyone is invited to fly a kite of the specified style on the field at the same time. The style of kite for Saturday is either delta or cellular and for Sunday, flat/ bowed or sparless. Fliers come from all over

to compete. In years past the festival has had fliers from Oregon, Southern Washington and even Canada. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, the indoor kite competition takes place in the Coupeville High School gym.

The event consists of flying the kites without wind — using only the fliers’ body and hand movements. The festival will offer some food options, including hotdogs sold by the Central Whidbey Lions Club. There is also a raffle with

Whidbey Island Kite Festival

items donated from individuals and businesses from all over Whidbey Island. The raffle is the club’s main source of fundraising.

Saturday, Sept. 19 & Sunday, Sept. 20
