One of the festival’s most popular children’s event, the Teddy Bear Drop, is slated for 1 p.m. both days. The event is for children ages 10 and younger. Children will also have the opportunity to learn how to fly a sport kite and play various kite games. A mass ascension, in which anyone can participate, will be at noon both days. A popular children’s event last year was the Running of the Bols. This year the kite festival will include a Teddy Bear Drop, children’s kite building and kite lessons. A mass ascension is where everyone is invited to fly a kite of the specified style on the field at the same time. The style of kite for Saturday is either delta or cellular and for Sunday, flat/ bowed or sparless. Fliers come from all over

to compete. In years past the festival has had fliers from Oregon, Southern Washington and even Canada. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, the indoor kite competition takes place in the Coupeville High School gym.

The event consists of flying the kites without wind — using only the fliers’ body and hand movements. The festival will offer some food options, including hotdogs sold by the Central Whidbey Lions Club. There is also a raffle with

Whidbey Island Kite Festival

items donated from individuals and businesses from all over Whidbey Island. The raffle is the club’s main source of fundraising.

Saturday, Sept. 19 & Sunday, Sept. 20
