Bothell Main Street Antiques wins window display contest Display helps to bring awareness to Veterans Heritage Museum’s needs, tribute

Just days prior to the big Fourth of July festivities, the Downtown Action Committee of Bothell decided to host the first-ever window display competition. The grand prize and home-

made trophy went to Bothell Main Street Antiques for their window display tribute and call to action supporting veterans.

According to Tom Dorsey of Bothell Main Street Antiques, the goal was to bring awareness to the plight that the Veter-

ans Heritage Museum is currently enduring and, of course, to support veterans and current military.

“We’re trying to save the museum and find a place, a home, for it,” Dorsey said.

The Veterans Heritage Museum is in need of help and assistance in continu-

ing to honor those who have served as well as displaying uniforms and gear from various time periods in American military history.

While Dorsey was not in the military, his son is currently serving. Dorsey stated that he wants to help

preserve the museum and its artifacts to educate future generations about what it means to be a veteran.

“Todd [Crooks, who is the founder and curator of the Veterans Heritage Museum] is a personal friend, but he’s also a 20-year serviceman in the Navy, and I have a son that has 27 years in the Oregon National

While currently crammed into corners of the Everett Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2100, most of the museum is in storage. It is the only veterans museum in King or Snohomish counties. The Veteran’s Heritage Museum is looking for a new home anywhere in the two counties that has a 1,000 square foot rent-free space.

“When Bothell had the contest, [The Bothell Main Street Antiques] thought ‘let’s see if Todd can bring down a few museum things,’ and that turned into three windows,” Crooks said.

American men and women have been fighting for the United States since the colonists rose up against British rulers in 1775, with the Declaration of Independence signed July 4, 1776.

Since then, any person in the military - whether they survived their service or not - are American military veterans.

“I tried to grab as many

red, white and blue things, obviously you have to have the Revolutionary War guy in there,” Crooks said. “We wanted to put some real old things in there and even some stuff from Iraq and Afghanistan.”

According to Crooks, the window display also showcased some period pieces from the Korean War, where Colonel Stephen L. Bettinger, former Bothell resident, shot down a Korean fighter plane, becoming an ‘Ace’ fighter pilot only moments before having to eject from his plane over enemy territory. Bettinger is survived by his wife, Lynn, who still lives in and owns the building where Bothell Main Street Antiques is located.

“I was blown away by the detail of the items they had in their window, because it’s supporting the military and the history of the military, it’s tremendous,” said Paul Cavanaugh, owner of Woodlawn Optical on Main Street. “I didn’t realize they

were going to do anything like that at all; I knew they would win. I think it’d be wonderful if the community could get behind their museum.”

The Veterans Heritage Museum is looking for donations to reach the $100,000 goal so that they can pay for the office needs, utilities, and other needs, but also hire a full-time paid manager to ensure the museum is always in proper working order. Not only do they need a space and funds, but they need interested volunteers, too.

As for the window display contest, it seems that the event will come back around next year.

The Reporter has been looking into the criminal histories of the candidates for Bothell City Council. Here is what the Reporter found while looking into the histories of candidates for position 2 and position 6, replacing Bill Evans and Mark Lamb, respectively.

Analyzing the words diversity and racism The words diversity and racism, because of the prevalence of their usage, may now require at least a little analysis. They are nearly dominating discourse.

They strongly deserve understanding, especially whether they convey more meaning connotatively or denotatively.

When applied to ideas the connotation of diversity has clear utilitarian meaning. It means many ideas/concepts/epiphanies having to compete for validity in a competition of ideas in an open and accessible market of them.

When speaking of diversity of people, one is no longer speaking of the pursuit of truth, and this diversity can apply in many ways. From different ethnicities, religions, to mental capabilities or even physical disabilities. Implying that having one merit scholar and five retarded persons, three blondes and one brunette, a Ukrainian, Ugandan and Laotian learning English, plus two short and three tall people, and five very poor plus two rich, one could clearly declare an abundance of existing diversity. Our Zone 1 lands, of the Fitzgerald subarea, are easily established as a non influence over the portion of North Creek that is in preservation as a fish habitat. There is great disagreement as to whether that portion of the creek will have any success in light of the hyper housing-growth north and the entire rest of the North Creek system, which is consumed in south Snohomish County growth.

At this point, the ability to sell our land is still in limbo. The end of the 19th year of trying is looming and we are getting beyond our years to really enjoy any retirement. This is what a lack of due diligence has left us with. We have been, as Mark Twain wrote, “sold down river.”

Disappointed in story on James McNeal I was extremely disappointed in the focus of the article about the three candidates for Bothell City Council, Position 4. Instead of releasing a responsible, factual report on “legal scrapes” occurring from one to two-and-a-half decades ago, it reads like a scandal sheet exposé.

James McNeal is a thoughtful, mature man who has learned a lot about life through his mistakes. With his compassion, concern for the city, and gentle upbeat attitude that insists on staying positive despite many opportunities to turn negative, he has impressed me as a man with sufficient dedication to serve on the Council with integrity and wisdom.

Nietzsche’s profound truism, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” sums up McNeal. He is exactly the kind of tough and strong, but gentle, person we need to represent us on a council that for too long has been perceived as self-serving.

I am proud to endorse him.

PCC Natural Markets (PCC), the nation’s largest natural foods retail cooperative and Puget Sound’s premier organic and natural foods grocer, will open a new 25,000-square-foot store in Bothell at Canyon Park Shopping Center, located at 22621 Bothell Everett Highway.

The Bothell PCC will be the grocery retailer’s eleventh location in the greater Seattle metropolitan area.

When opened in 2016, PCC expects to employ approximately 130 full and part-time employees at the new store.

Inglemoor runners compete at the East/West Senior All-Star race Katie Diekema and Amber Rose represented Inglemoor High School at the East/West Senior AllStar race on July 11 at the Run of the Mill 5K. The race represents the top graduating seniors who ran at the Washington State Cross Country Championships last fall.

Both girls were on the Inglemoor team that placed seventh overall.

Rose will be competing for University of Portland in the fall and Diekema will be running for Calvin College in Michigan.

Diekema also won one of the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Scholarships.

This is the fourth year in a row an Inglemoor athlete has received a scholarship from the association. The scholarship is based on academic achievement and community service.

Diekema graduated this past spring with a full IB diploma and a 3.98 GPA. She also won several academic awards.

Luckily, Lake Forest Park has planned a detour and is working to minimize the impact to area residents. “The City has prepared a local detour plan around the work area, including Ballinger Way (SR 104), Northeast 178th Street, and Brookside Boulevard Northeast,� Halverson said. “The detour route will be signed, and key detour

intersections will be directed by uniformed police officers and traffic control flaggers.�

However, that hasn’t sold everyone in the area. “I plan on staying home [this] weekend. I am not looking forward to this closure at all,� said David Baker, mayor of Kenmore. “It is necessary and I do not know if there would be a better time to do it but I doubt it. They have to work within the fish window and are very limited as to when they can get the job done.�

Crews will work around the clock through the week-

end, in order to re-open SR 522 to traffic around 5 a.m. on Monday. If the work is incomplete, then the roadway will still be re-opened on Monday, but work and closures would continue to the weekend of July 24-27. “We are doing our best to get the word out but it will be a mess. [It’s best if everyone uses] the next week to stock up on supplies and be prepared,� Baker said. “I think there will be a major disruption to our community. Normal errands will be curtailed and even getting to the grocery store could be difficult.�

Some tips for relieving allergies of the summer season seasonal allergies, this time of year can be less magical for you. Pollen and spores released from grass and weeds are at their peak during this time leading to what’s known as summer allergies.

Seasonal allergies are caused by the cyclical nature of when trees, grasses and flowers begin to bloom and release their pollen. Typically, the peak grass and weeds allergy season is from April through July but

can last all the way through September.

With seasonal allergies, your immune system overreacts to harmless pollens, dusts and molds by releasing its histamine stores and other biochemicals, from mast cells, into your body. If you’re a part of the sniffling, sneezing and itching community there are ways to find relief.

Prevention is the best medicine and especially when paired with a few minor lifestyle changes, you can keep your symptoms under control. Here are a few tips I share with patients: • Limit your early morning outdoor time (5AM to 10AM) as this is when most plants and trees disperse their pol-

len • Remove pollen from you skin and hair by showering frequently • Regularly bathe your pets to remove pollen from their fur and discourage them from sleeping on your furniture • Use a dehumidifier to decrease mold growth in your home • Avoid using fans that blow outdoor air into your home, as this can pull in pollen from outside • Use your air conditioner when driving to help filter larger sized allergens If you develop symptoms of seasonal allergies, keep a log of what may be causing your symptoms.

your symptoms.

Over-the-counter antihistamines, like Claritin and Benadryl, are great options for most people.

For fast relief of mild symptoms, I recommend my patients use normal saline nasal rinses or using devices twice-a-day, such as a Neti pot, to help irrigate your nasal passages and rinse your sinuses.

Additionally, several types of anti-histamine eye drops and mast cell stabilizers or corticosteroid nasal sprays are becoming more common over the counter. While eye drops can provide relief for itchy eyes, nasal sprays can help reduce swelling and irritation in your nose. These may help to augment other home treatment modalities.

Other options include two main forms of immunotherapy treatments, including intramuscular injections or sublingual drops. Both depend on a daily to weekly low-dose exposure to allergens to help remodel your immune system and thus decrease allergy symptoms. These methods should be prescribed and followed closely by your doctor or allergist.

“It’s very valid for her to say that,” Hendrickson said.

“It would not raise any red flags, in my mind, if I saw a student doing that.”

“Oh I think it was the Wayne land, the Wayne Golf Course,” said McAuliffe, who represents Bothell from the 1st District. “That was brought to me by a group of people, OneBothell. When they came to my office and told me about what they knew of the Wayne Golf Course and how it could be sold off, we went into action. We wanted to save that property and we did.”

While it was the legisla-

In protest, he is in the midst of a 31-day vigil, July 4 to Aug. 4, to protest consumer data trafficking, sitting on top of Bothell Chiropractic Building on Bothell’s Main Street.

“I was an original Web 1.0 entrepreneur. As I looked at Web 2.0, if we can’t make money by selling advertising, how are we going to make money,” said Gaylord, Founder of StopConsumerTrafficking.com and LocalLoop. “The idea was ‘let’s start commoditizing people’s identities, let’s take behavioral tracking to another level.

Each person who uses any part of the internet has an avatar representation of what they like, what they do for hobbies or work, or even where they live and play.

“They found a way to silently track everything that we do, everything that we search for, all of our friends and what they do, the things we are talking about at any given time” Gaylord said.

“They then match those things with our cell phone records and credit card records and create these affinity profiles, that I like to refer to as avatars, for each of us.”

According to Gaylord, Facebook has the ability to recognize a person with more than 90-percent accuracy sans-photograph, based off a person’s information.

Corporations often sell user ‘Avatar’ information in order to offer services for free, or so they say.

“If I have a neighbor and that neighbor builds a fence five-feet onto my property line and I just let it slide, at some point that property becomes his,” Gaylord said.

“The most-valuable asset I own is my unique, individual identity; it’s the only unique thing that I own and the only thing that is truly mine.”

Instead of property lines, every person on the planet is the product, but also the victim, Gaylord said.

“It’s what America was founded on, is the freedom of press and our ability not to be bought and have a voice against these kinds of [tyrants],” Gaylord said. “Its insidious and it has to stop.

BRIEFS Hsu, Sharp named Outstanding Graduates Kenmore residents Rachel Hsu and Corena Sharp have been honored

by Western Washington University as Outstanding Graduates.

Hsu, an Outstanding Graduate in Art, graduated in June with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Art and a minor in Art History.

Hsu’s work was part of nine exhibitions during her senior year, including two solo exhibitions. She also led the development of the first BFA catalogue for the Art Department.

Art faculty members say Hsu is one of the best students they’ve seen in the department in recent years and a promising young artist. Hsu plans to partake in artist residencies and work before attending graduate school.

She is the daughter of David and Rose Hsu and a graduate of Inglemoor High School in Kenmore.

Mary Main Barger, age 92, died peacefully on July 1, 2015 at the Aegis Lodge community in Kirkland, WA. From her birth to her death, Mary nurtured the people around her with her patient teaching spirit, love, grace and generous heart. Mary Louise Main was born on June 14, 1923 in Bellingham to Rolland and Lottie Main, and was the older sister of Gerald Main. Mary went on to major in Math at Washington State University, and to teach at the University of Washington and in Battleground, WA. Mary returned to Bellingham to work in the family lumber business, and met and married Richard W. Barger in 1956. Together they had two daughters and this year celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Mary and Dick loved to travel, boat and spend time with family and friends. Mary lived a life devoted to her faith and church, family, friends and many community organizations.

Mary is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughters Molly (Evan) Holzknecht and Laurie (Cris Rongve) Barger; four grandchildren: Gretchen (Neil) Jones, Liesl (Nick) Gelotte, Sam Rongve and Gabe Rongve; four great grandchildren: Dante, Dominique and Mila Jones, and Madeline Gelotte; brother Gerald Main and many beloved nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.

The Barger family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the staff of Aegis Lodge, Kirkland and the Evergreen Hospice team for their diligent and loving care of Mary, our family, and continuing care of Richard.
