Summer Food Program feeds youths for free Sequim Gazette staff

Sequim and Port Angeles communities are finding ways to help keep children healthy while school is out. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula provides free meals to children during the summer. This summer, meals areserved at 10 locations from noon-1 p.m. Monday-Friday. There are no income requirements or registration. Any child under age 18 may come to eat. Breakfast served from 8-9 a.m. at both clubhouse sites for ages 18 and under — no membership is required.

Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like the club, to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. Sequim sites: Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula CCK Unit, Carrie Blake Park, Elk Creek Apartments, Mountain View Court Apartments. Port Angeles sites: The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula Port Angeles Unit, Dream Park, Jefferson Elementary School, Evergreen Apartments, Shane Park and July 6-30 Roosevelt Elementary. Pedestrian hit, dies on Hwy. 101 Sequim Gazette staff

A Sequim woman was struck and killed last Thursday morning while trying to cross U.S. Highway 101 near Carlsborg. The Washington State Patrol reports Jason Beaudette, 33, of Port Angeles, was driving west in the righthand lane in his 1997 GMC pickup at 9:30 a.m. on June 18 when Karen Wesolowski, 69, of Sequim, was crossing north to south at Mill Road. Wesolowski was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by the truck. Trooper Russ Winger said they are awaiting a toxicology report but it’s unlikely drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident. Beaudette was not injured in the incident and no charges are expected to be filed, Winger said. “It will most likely go down as a tragic collision,” he said. Wesolowski was walking toward her home in Parkwood after riding the bus to take her cat for weekly treatment, Winger said. The cat was uninjured and taken to Karen Wesolowski, a 69-year-old Sequim woman, was killed the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society. while crossing the highway in Carlsborg on Thursday morning.
