3 Ways the Pope’s Climate Message Hits Home in Seattle

us Hartmann readily concedes that he has no chance of beating Sally Bagshaw. “I’m going to lose and I’m comfortable with that,” he said last week. He seems almost relieved of his imminent defeat. “Being on the Council would be a less pleasant work environment than I currently enjoy.”

After filing his candidacy papers, two days before the May 15 deadline, the 39-year-old site reliability engineer at Google took to social media and offered a rather flippant rationale for his decision to challenge the entrenched and well-bankrolled incumbent in the newly created 7th District. “So after some more research,” he posted on Google Plus, “it looks like I’d actually be expected to show up at the City Council like, every day. Plus a massive pay cut and no more free lunches. So I’ve decided to file and then basically not run. Well, I intend to be a pain in the ass of the incumbent because I think that’ll be fun.”

But Hartmann, who grew up in Wisconsin and recalled doorbelling for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 presidential campaign, denies that he’s a nuisance candidate. “I’m sincere about this,” he says, adding that he really does intend to be a thoughtful, engaged contender and talk about issues that matter to him. In particular, he wants to ensure that the city’s high-tech hotbeds like the Denny Triangle area and South Lake Union are further developed without displacing existing residents.

More important, he wants to engage the tech community, hoping that his Google pedigree will translate into votes, but admits that may be too much to ask. “I’m going to try and coax them out, but the little fuckers don’t vote, to put it bluntly,” says Hartmann, who moved to Seattle in the late ’90s. “They are not civically engaged. They take civic responsibility lightly, and because of that they are used as scapegoats. They are blamed for showing up and driving up prices. But do we blame the lumberjacks who came here, the aerospace people who came here? To blame the tech workers is like blaming the tide for coming in.”

ope Francis is not the first Pope to urge humanity to change its sinful ways, but he delivered one of the harsher lectures in recent memory last Thursday, when he released an encyclical linking pollution—including climate change—and social inequality. “The gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest,” the encyclical reads. In Seattle, it’s not hard to find examples of themes Pope Francis touched on last week. The region’s geographical location, along with the intersection of race and poverty within its communities, creates a unique set of pollution and climate issues for low income populations.

and Magnolia are older and vote in much greater numbers, says political strategist and pollster Ben Anderstone. In 2013, Kshama Sawant, in her victorious council race over Councilmember Richard Conlin, received only 43 percent of the vote in what is now the 7th District, her lowest vote percentage in the city; Ed Murray beat the more liberal Mike McGinn in the district by a 60 to 40 percent margin.

In the 2014 midterm elections, Anderstone tells the Weekly, voters under 36 were much less likely to vote in Belltown (34 percent turnout), Denny Triangle (34 percent) and South Lake Union (36 percent)—the three areas with the highest concentration of tech workers—as compared to Capitol Hill (46 percent), Fremont (49 percent), and Ballard (50 percent), places also rife with young transplants.

“What drives turnout is a feeling of commitment to a community, and these people in high-tech often don’t feel that they are a part of Seattle,” theorizes Anderstone. “They are welleducated and have higher incomes, but there’s no real political engagement.”

Postulates Todd Bishop, the co-founder of GeekWire, a Seattle-based national technology news site: “There is an underlying current that technology will save the world before our political leaders will.”

Elizabeth Campbell, a 36th legislative district board member who oversees get-out-the-votes efforts for Democrats in Belltown, LQA, and

the Denny Triangle, says there are two main obstacles in getting high-tech workers to cast a ballot. First, she says, many of them reside in high-security buildings that are not conducive to door-to-door registration efforts; second, “They tend to live online, which is not as effective as personal one-on-one contacts.”

Dan Munro, the longtime owner of Nollie’s Café, located a few blocks from the heart of the Amazon campus, has for some time had a somewhat strained relationship with the hightech workers who’ve come to monopolize South Lake Union. “Me and my fellow restaurateurs here have all noticed that they have this sense of entitlement,” says Munro. “And when you are so self-involved, there’s no room for community involvement. Plus for a lot of them, this is just a stopover place before they move to the next job somewhere else.”

Hartmann, who has worked at Google for seven years and rents a $2,100-a-month onebedroom apartment in Belltown, says it’s unfortunate that his high-tech brethren are not more involved in the city’s public affairs. “It is a mistake on their part, but they don’t see government as relevant to their lives.”

As to the campaign ahead, Hartmann, who has raised about $5,000, deadpans, “I have to prepare for the worst—that I might win. But then, I could just never show up and they’d have to impeach me.” E

Rising sea level “Rises in the sea level mainly affect impoverished coastal populations who have nowhere else to go,” says the Pope. Climate Central estimates that by the year 2100, 42 cities and towns in Washington may be threatened by coastal flooding. Puget Sound tribal communities are particularly vulnerable because of their innate connection to the land. “Puyallup, Tulalip, [and] Stillaguamish . . . tribes are often locked into reservation land if they want to maintain their tribal identity,” says Lara Whitely Binder, outreach and adaptation specialist at UW’s Climate Impacts Group.

Poor air quality The encyclical is not

limited to climate change; it also notes the “broad spectrum of health hazards” atmospheric pollutants produce. A 2014 study by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency studied and ranked communities in Washington to determine areas disproportionately impacted by levels of diesel pollution, household income, health sensitivity, and several other factors. They found that the poor and racially mixed neighborhoods in Tukwila, the International District, Southeast Seattle, and Greater Duwamish were in the top 5 percent when scored on these criteria. “In south Seattle there’s a lot more industry, a lot more traffic, a lot less access to healthcare,” says Jill Mangaliman, executive director of the Climate Justice Project in Seattle. “Communities of color live disproportionately in the most polluted neighborhoods.”

Degradation of resources “Marine life

in rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans . . . is affected by uncontrolled fishing, leading to a drastic depletion of certain species,” the encyclical reads. “The depletion of fishing reserves especially hurts small fishing communities without the means to replace those resources.” Puget Sound tribes have deep connections to the increasingly threatened salmon and shellfish, roots and berries, and other species they hunt. Whitely Binder says these species are part of their ceremonial and cultural practices as well as of their tribal economy. E

Electoral data from the 7th District would seem to back up Hartmann’s frank assessment of techworker apathy. Encompassing the established single-family neighborhoods of Queen Anne Hill and Magnolia—where Hartmann says he has no plans to campaign—the district also includes downtown high-rises and Belltown, the apartment buildings of Lower Queen Anne, and the high-tech worker boomtown of the Denny Triangle and South Lake Union, the two fastestgrowing neighborhoods in Seattle.

The district has the highest percentage of single people (56 percent) and renters (63.6 percent) in all of Seattle, which would seem to indicate a young, liberal voting base. As is, however, the district is one of the city’s most conservative.

HALA if Ya Hear Me The density debate is about to get even louder.

ith Seattle in the throes of an escalating housing crisis, the Mayor’s Housing Affordability and Livability Advisory (HALA) committee is due at the end of the month to release their recommendations on how to keep poor people inside the Emerald City. Those recommendations will likely ignite a legislative contest over how to rein in out-of-control rents, and by how much.

If those recommendations include increasing housing density in Seattle—which they almost certainly will—then City Hall should prepare for a brawl: As the days heat up in Seattle, neighborhood advocates are making clear that they’ve reached the boiling point with duplexes, triplexes, and condos cropping up around the city.

At two recent Planning, Land Use and Sustainability (PLUS) committee meetings, City Council

members got an earful from homeowners who are angry that bulky, ugly, dirty development is ruining their quaint neighborhoods. Resident Suzanne Ferris likened efficiency apartments to “rooming houses masquerading as hotels for transient people coming to the UW in our Ravenna Springs urban village,” and added, “I am completely disheartened and emotionally devastated . . . My inheritance, my husband’s family’s inheritance is being ignored as you move forward in this juggernaut.” Buddhist nun The Venerable Dhammadinna called Capitol Hill a “dystopia,” and a third commenter was reduced to tears while describing the high-density apartment buildings that have erupted next to her “lovely little two-bedroom townhouse.”

These people are angry about the looseness of density caps in “lowrise zones”—multifamily areas zoned for townhouses and apartment buildings, covering a tenth of the city. The zones are significant in city planning as the areas where leaders have decided they’re going to concentrate growth in coming years as tens of thousands of more people move to Seattle. They are meant to act as a buffer between single-family zones, which make up most of the city, and denser, mixed-use urban villages.

The urban-village concept dates back to at least 1994, when it was championed by Mayor Norm Rice as an answer to growth throughout the region and adopted in the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The villages are supposed to be dense, walkable, semi-self-sufficient nodes scattered throughout the city alongside major transit lines. This makes urban villages an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to urban sprawl. But it also can lead to unpleasant surprises for residents who live nearby.

“When you’re in a neighborhood . . . and everything seems to be just how you want it, and now someone comes in and starts changing things, it’s like, I got it just the way I like it, and now someone’s ruining it. I think we all can appreciate that frustration, and it’s maddening,” PLUS chair Mike O’Brien says. “At the same time, this is a growing city, and we weren’t all here in the beginning, right?

To say I got it, it works for me, and now I’m pulling up the ladder behind me—that’s not the city that I think we should be or want to be.”

That’s not to say that O’Brien isn’t responding to complaints. Last week, the PLUS committee passed O’Brien-authored legislation that tightens the leash on developers in low-rise zones. But homeowners clearly wanted more, repeatedly cheering as PLUS member Tom Rasmussen pressed for rules even stricter than O’Brien had proposed.

“As hard as we try, developers will not care about the effect that they have on someone else . . . They don’t care, and that’s why we have to put those regulations in place,” Rasmussen said after the hearing.

sen’s bill next month, just as the HALA committee releases its recommendations. HALA will almost certainly launch a larger debate over broad development and land use, because the housing crisis cannot be addressed by simply tweaking existing policy. The disputes that have recently cohered around O’Brien and Rasmussen’s efforts will expand and intensify, as arguments about targeted policies that apply to a fraction of the city are eclipsed by disagreements over fundamental questions about what kind of city Seattle wants to be.

Both pro- and anti-density advocates have invoked the plight of the poor in rapidly gentrifying Seattle. Homeowners point out that new apartment buildings tend to have higher rent than the older ones they replace. Developers reply that you can’t solve the housing crisis without building more housing.

Councilmember Nick Licata suggests both sides have a point. More density is vital, he says, “but if they argue that greater density will result in lower rates of homelessness, that hasn’t been proven to be the case.”

“The urbanist argument tends to fall into a supply-side argument, and supply-side arguments assume everyone’s equal, and then you just add more [housing] numbers,” he says. “[But] more housing in the city doesn’t necessarily mean more low-income housing.” E

A Man, a Swastika, and a Photo Worth a Thousand Comments

here are roughly 10 organized hate groups in Washington, and, Jay Trinidad suddenly noticed, here apparently was one of their shavedhead members, sporting a swastika armband the day after nine South Carolina churchgoers were shot to death for being black.

Do I photograph the Nazi? Trinidad thought as he walked past the man last Thursday evening at the Coleman Dock ferry terminal. Or should I just keep walking? He stopped in the midst of the crowd—tourists, commuters, and Mariners fans pouring in after a game—and mulled it over.

“I felt a deep, deep anger,” remembers Trinidad, a 45-year-old commercial photographer. He’d just finished an assignment and was returning home to Bainbridge Island. “I thought,

He took a stance about eight feet away and lifted his camera as the man, dressed in black and wearing what appear to be Air Jordans, began smirking at him. Rather than run off a burst of frames, Trinidad took three shots, each time pausing provocatively to look at his camera, look at the man, and take the next one. The two parted without a word.

The next day Trinidad posted one of the shots on his Facebook page with the simple caption “Nazi ferry rider from last night’s commute, Colman Dock Ferry Terminal, Seattle, Washington.”

It was a picture worth a thousand comments.

It also generated more than a thousand shares and hundreds of likes. It was picked up by websites and Twitter feeds and other media, including KIRO FM’s Jason Rantz who defended the man’s right to brandish the swastika “even if, as a Jew, I’m disgusted by the guy in this picture.”

Many commenters expressed surprise that there were white supremacists willing to flash their racist badges around Lefty Seattle. But the Southern Poverty Law Center says there are at least three such hate groups in the Emerald City, and 10 in the state—the same number as Idaho.

The Seattle groups include the white nationalist Northwest Front and the skinheads of Crew 38 and Northwest Hammerskins. The religious-based Creativity Movement also has followers hereabouts, genuflecting to the edict of founder Ben Klassen: “We gird for total war against the Jews and the rest of the goddamned mud races of the world.”

Trinidad told me he wasn’t sure where the man was headed. But other Facebookers reported that he took the ferry to Bremerton. Melvin Neifert, who describes himself as a “troublemaker” with the activist group Anonymous Seattle, said some ferry riders confronted the man with the swastika, who “stated that a ‘company’ paid him to wear it. He said that he was unaware

of its meaning.” Some thought much of what he said made no sense.

Many commenters congratulated Trinidad for taking the shot. “That photo should have made national press by now,” said one. Another faraway Facebooker said, “If someone here in Belgium would walk on the streets with a swastika, he’d be locked away in a mental home.”

Some worried about Trinidad’s safety. And

by Monday, the opposition had caught up with him. “Some lovely white-pride people have found me on Twitter,” he observed. “Also, some extremist bulletin board has a bunch of my Facebook profile photos. They didn’t even choose the good ones.”

That website, whose commenters tend to call folks niggers, coons, and faggots, claims the swastika man is autistic—“the type of guy that would wear a Patriot’s football helmet to a Seahawks game and not even know that [what] he was doing would stir up negative emotions.” He was just “an aging harmless kook.”

Trinidad says he stands by his photo and comments. “The really cool thing is there is a fairly intelligent discussion of the photo. People are looking at it carefully, and understand the complexity. I wondered at the time if it was performance art, but even if it was, what’s the difference? The message is, ‘I am interested in exterminating anyone who is not white.’ It’s a message we should be talking about.” E

had the jitters. “I don’t even know what I was expecting,” she says. “I was definitely nervous.

But then I got there, and I . . . as an adult person . . . ” Ghetto trails off. “I had never been in a space with that many queer people.”

As Ghetto opened the doors of the Lincoln Options Elementary School, she was greeted by a room packed with 35 or so anxious, excited queer youth, ages 12 to 21, comprising a vast spectrum of gender identity Ghetto had never encountered before, “especially growing up in the ’90s.”

“You could feel it as soon as you walked in the room,” she says. “It was just like, ‘Whaaaaat is this?’ ” In 2012, “What is this?” was a question a lot of people were just starting to ask about Olympia’s Queer Rock Camp. A year before, it had quietly made history as the first camp of its kind in the world, drawing campers from as far as Arizona and Michigan and volunteers from as far as Europe.

Fischer was compelled to start the camp after four years as a volunteer and organizer for the

ne of my best friends who lived in Olympia back in 2012 was talking to me and said, ‘Hey—have you heard of this Queer Rock Camp?’ ” Jenn Ghetto, the popular Seattle-based singer/ songwriter who performs under the name S, tells me. “And I was like, ‘Ummmm, what?

No.’ ” Ghetto, a queer musician who had been touring the country since 1999, was incredulous such a thing even existed in Olympia. The thing is, up until 2011, it didn’t, anywhere. “Sometimes queer music can seem like such a small scene in the Northwest . . . and in the world in general,” Ghetto says. “It can be hard. I didn’t know very many queer people at all growing up, I definitely didn’t have adult mentors. I really wished that something like Queer Rock Camp had existed when I was younger, which is why I totally wanted to do my time.”

Ghetto immediately contacted Molly Fischer, the founder of the annual camp, and applied to be a volunteer music instructor for its secondever session in 2012. Before arriving for the first day of the week-long summer camp, Ghetto

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp. Born in Portland in 2001, Girls Rock Camp was rapidly proving itself a vital, breakthrough model in countering the male-dominated music industry by empowering young girls, ages 8 to 18, to learn instruments, write songs, and perform them with the support of staff and volunteers who were also women. Now with 40 chapters across the U.S. and international offshoots in Canada, Europe, South America, and, most recently, the Middle East, the model has become ubiquitous, a testament to the power of the ideas at its core. Every year, some 3,000 girls form 750 new bands at the 43 Girls Rock Camps worldwide. In exit interviews with campers, surveys showed a 14 percent increase in the number of girls who affirm “their opinion matters” and a 15 percent increase in girls who affirm “they have good ideas.”

“I had been having conversations with different youth and adults who were supporters of the Girls Rock Camp model, but didn’t volunteer or attend because they didn’t identify as women,” Fischer says. “A lot of the lessons that I was teaching and learning about at rock camp—challenging these notions that women don’t take up space the same way, educating on sexual-violence prevention, teaching women to set boundaries and have a voice, that they are going to be heard and respected—I just felt like those were really important things for queer folks too, for many genders of people.”

Gray Newlin, then a senior who had recently

become the president of her Bellingham high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance, stumbled upon an ad for the first Queer Rock Camp on her tumblr one day in 2011. “At the time, I was just a small queer girl who went really unnoticed in the system,” she says. “The GSA at my school was a space we carved out together as students for each other. We didn’t really have guidance;

or written any material. The result was Hex Appeal, a gothy synth-punk band with fantastic shout-along lyrics like “Make out with my grave!” and “No kisses, just curses,” which they cobbled together in a month of frenzied jamming. Two months after the band’s debut show at Fierce Fest, Chang and Newlin recorded an album; two weeks after that, they went on tour.

“I play drums in the band, but I’d never played drums before,” Newlin says. “We did an insane amount in so little time because we have the Queer Rock Camp attitude.”

Both are returning this week as volunteers.

Chang went so far as to move to Olympia this year because of their love for the community they formed there. It’s not an uncommon occurrence; many campers have ended up moving to Olympia after Queer Rock Camp—like Levi, from Arizona, as told in Queer Rock Camp volunteer Taylor Dow’s comic (starts on page 13).

“I don’t think that’s because of us,” Fischer says. “I think campers end up moving here because of the incredible community they themselves build in Olympia.”

“People say to us, ‘This is a historical

moment,’ ” Meredith Hancock tells me over the phone. “We don’t think about it that much in the present tense, but, yeah, it’s pretty intense.” One year after that first Queer Rock Camp in Olympia in 2011, Hancock created QORDS (Queer Oriented Radical Days of Summer) in 2012, an overnight camp in North Carolina built to “empower Southern queer & trans youth through music.” Directly inspired by QRC,

By the time Fischer decided to create the camp, LGBTQ rights had earned widespread support like never before. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage; four years later, Connecticut followed suit, as did California (before overturning it the same year). By 2011, although Washington had yet to legalize it, same-sex marriage had scored victories in Iowa, Vermont, Washington, D.C., New Hampshire, and New York. Trans rights, however, weren’t yet on the table as a national, mainstream topic of discussion, as they’ve become in the past year—the scant media representation that existed at that time often cast transgender folks as victims or villains (sometimes both, as on FX’s Nip/Tuck).

Fischer, a musician herself in the ambient-rock duo Hot Tears, moved to Olympia and quickly fell in with the local DIY punk scene, a music community founded on a proud legacy of gender justice that leapt at the opportunity to make her camp idea a reality. Celebrated queer Oly-punk bands like Agatha, RVIVR, Dogjaw, and My Parade raised a large chunk of the money needed for the first year of Queer Rock Camp by playing highly attended benefit shows around town, with many band members also taking the extra step and signing up to be the camp’s first volunteer counselors, coordinators, and music instructors.

After Fischer partnered with Stonewall Youth, a local queer youth space, the world’s first Queer Rock Camp opened its doors.

“By the end of the week,” Fischer says, “everyone was crying.”

The completely different cultural climate proved difficult in the beginning.

“We actually debated about putting the word ‘queer’ in the name, worried it might prevent a lot of youth from being able to come,” Hancock says. “Historically, queer and trans adults have been kept away from queer and trans youth. The first year we did it, it was hard to find a campground that would even let us be there because we were queer.”

Despite barriers like these, the idea has proven infectious. In the five short years the Queer Rock Camp model has existed, its reach has grown exponentially. The first international camp directly inspired by the model, Berlin’s Queer Musik Kamp is opening this year. International volunteers from Canada and Europe at the Olympia camp have talked about taking the model back to their homes as well—including one in the works for Australia’s indigenous queer youths. Versions of the camp are slated to open in Portland and Long Beach this year, and camps in Minneapolis and Vancouver, B.C., are currently in the planning stages.

“Uh, I’m into musical theatre, but I also like punky stuff,” one camper shrugs.

“I like the Mountain Goats,” another camper says. “Oh! And I also like Best Coast a lot.”

“Yeah, the other day I was thinking this is a lot like that Disney Channel movie Camp Rock, but gay, and without the Jonas Brothers,” one very astute young camper observes, eliciting chuckles from the surrounding crowd.

Later in the week at this year’s Queer Music History workshop, Fischer will pose a question to these campers: “Where do you think Queer Rock Camp fits in the continuum of queer music history?” It seems only fair to pose it to her too.

“I think we’re able to do this because of the space that’s been created by queer musicians who came before us. It probably wouldn’t have been possible without them,” she says. “When planning the camp, one of the things I thought about was, 10 years from now, what’s the impact going to be? I hope we can continue that legacy of organizing and intersecitonality that made it all possible.” E

When Jennie Livingston’s documentary was released in 1991, drag culture was hardly a mainstream phenomenon. Twentyfive years later, we have RuPaul’s Drag Race on TV. Back then, seeing a bunch of black and Latino drag queens camping and vogueing in Harlem’s ballroom competitions was a novelty at the multiplex. Outside New York or San Francisco, how many gay teens—especially those with brown skin—had any idea that such a scene existed? Long before the Internet or DVDs, Paris Is Burning became a viral VHS hit, especially in those flyover states without art-house cinemas to play it. Livingston filmed it over several years during the late ’80s, gaining the trust of her subjects during a time we came to know as the AIDS decade. With ACT-UP protests and numbing mortality statistics, that context was depressing enough, yet Livingston’s players provided a joyous blast of attitude, bitchiness, and shade-throwing. The film came at just the right time, becoming a hit with straight audiences too. Outside the frame, we know, there’s queer-bashing, homophobia, and a lurking virus—as these guys sometimes admit. Burns had tried makgeolli only once before going to Korea with Han and his wife for tasting research, looking for flavors that might inspire Girin’s future menu.

“I tried it and thought ‘Eh, that’s not bad,’ but it wasn’t something I was blown away by,” Burns tells me. But in Seoul he tried it again.

Sitting down at Girin’s bar, he recalls that moment: At a quick meal in a little tent outside of a fish market, it was served in little battered metal bowls. “When I tried it, I was stunned. I decided then that I wanted to try and make our own for the restaurant.

Maybe it was drunk ambition, who knows, but I was hooked.”

That inspiration stuck with him, and months later he was in the kitchen of his apartment washing the starch out of sweet rice, adding the necessary fermentation agents, and waiting for a finished product—which turned out abysmal. “I made about 20 batches before I had one that was any good,” remembers Burns. He persisted. On a second trip to Seoul he attended a makgeolli brewing class, launched to capitalize on the re-emerging interest in the drink by hip young Koreans intent on celebrating the country’s past—not unlike 20-somethings in the U.S. Like sake, yet not. going hog wild over vintage cocktail recipes. People are highly opinionated about sushi in Seattle, and it seems as if nearly everyone you ask for a recommendation will send you off to Shiro’s, Mashiko, or Sushi Kappo Tamura—for good reason. Yet on a recent visit to Nishino, I wondered why this rarely seems to make anyone’s top choices. Maybe it’s the location in sleepy Madison Valley, or the lackluster exterior in a sort-of shopping plaza of other exact lackluster exteriors, but this place, with its older, well-heeled clientele, serves some of the best sashimi I’ve eaten in the city. I went with the chef’s pick—a medium-sized plate—with two pieces each of albacore tuna, sockeye salmon, amberjack, otoro, and yellowtail tuna. Every one was far larger than average, and each asserted its particular flavor as I bit into its incredibly luscious, fatty, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I feel that on most plates you’re lucky to get even a few pieces of such quality—the kind that cause you to roll your eyes in the very best way and sigh in unison with your dining mate. With sashimi this fresh, you can almost forgo the soy and wasabi dipping sauce. E

ast April, the creators of sushi-centric Momiji on Capitol Hill and Belltown’s Umi opened their newest creation amid the sparkling new condos and mirrored high-rises cropping up all around Century Link. Instead of continuing menus of innovative rolls and Izakaya offerings, owner Steven Han decided it was time to do something new. Paying tribute to his own heritage, he chose to make it a Korean restaurant, focusing on traditional and rustic flavors but presenting them with modern techniques.

And in the kitchen: award-winning chef Brandon Kirksey, formerly of San Francisco’s flour+water and Ethan Stowell’s Tavolàta.

But food is not the only draw to Pioneer Square’s Girin on a gloriously sunny Tuesday evening. I’m here to drink, because beyond the restaurant’s tastefully appointed interior, creative lighting installations, and meticulously curated gardens and up a short flight of stairs is a small room filled with terra cotta pots, each one gurgling gently with fermenting makgeolli.

Made, as are so many Asian alcohols, by fermenting rice, this milkywhite liquid was for hundreds of years Korea’s drink of the people, enjoyed by farmers, fishermen, and bluecollar workers. But after the country’s economic boom in the 1970s, it was largely replaced by more contemporary drinks like cocktails and imported beer.

Makgeolli was reduced to a lower-class liquor, and many lost interest.

Pronounced “ma-kolli,” makgeolli is well known to most Koreans and Korean-Americans as either an old-timers’ drink or a throwback beverage for hipster youth. That the rest of us have likely never heard of it is no surprise. Unless you frequent Korean establishments or love to browse the unknowns in the liquor aisle at Asian grocery stores, it’s rare to see. Even for those who have had it, it’s easy to dismiss as just a slight variation on sake. But that is imported makgeolli, pasteurized and altered to make it uniform and sweet and safe. Real makgeolli, like the kind Girin brewer and co-owner Cody Burns is showing me inside the terra cotta pots, is different, and Girin is the only place in Washington—hell, possibly the only restaurant in the country—where you can get a taste of the real McCoy. The process is relatively simple, but requires extremely close attention to detail and lots of patient, monotonous work. Sweet rice is first washed by hand in filtered water to remove the excess starch, a process that can take more than half an hour. The rice is then air-dried before it is

alla Walla has been really hot this month. Of course, it often is: That’s one of the reasons it has been the hub of the Washington wine industry for several decades.

Consistent sunshine and heat allow the area to ripen a wide range of grapes, including some rather stubborn varietals like cabernet franc and petit verdot. Most years,

BY ZACH GEBALLE grape growers and winemakers relish the heat; sure, it causes some concerns, but an unduly cold vintage is worse for sales. Yet on my recent visit, the heat felt less like an essential part of the region’s character and more like an ominous threat.

Few winemakers wanted to admit it, but after the hottest vintage on record last year, another similar season appears to be in the making—a sequence that may have long-lasting effects.

A recent New York Times piece painted a rosy image of the Washington wine industry in the face of drought, and it’s not that I think that’s wrong, exactly. High temperatures in and of themselves would be a bit of a risk, but coupled with the drought conditions that the state is currently facing, they create a lot of challenges for Washington to overcome this year and moving forward. Because of the low rainfall levels in eastern Washington during the growing season, most vineyards are drip-irrigated; and with drought conditions in effect, less water is available. Our warm winter meant that the Cascade snowpack is only about 20 percent of usual, and while grapes require far less water than many other crops, they can’t survive without some help.

The greater obstacle, though, is that warmer temperatures tend to result in grapes that are simultaneously more and less ripe than in more temperate vintages—more ripe in the sense that they’re laden with sugar and thus can produce high alcohol levels, but with fewer complex compounds that form only after long amounts of time on the vine. Accelerating that process may be good for bulk production, as in California’s scorching Central Valley, but it stifles quality and nuance.

That’s one reason many of the area’s most innovative winemakers are looking outside Washington’s classic growing regions. Cooler sites like Snipes Mountain, Naches Heights, and especially the Columbia Gorge allow grapes that all-important “hang time,” preserving vital acidity and structure even when grapes do ripen fully.

In fact, given the climatic trends, it feels like only a matter of time until quality wine production moves west of the Cascades. Currently only a tiny fraction of Washington’s grapes come from here, but if these warm, dry summers continue, it wouldn’t shock me to see enterprising grape growers looking to break new ground.

We’re still a way from seeing grapevines on the sides of Queen Anne or Capitol Hill, but if the heat doesn’t relent, we may have to find a new nexus for Washington wine. E

How a neglected American-history musical is getting a sex-blind revival.

There’s yet another reason to stage 1776 today.

The show—book by Peter Stone, music and lyrics

by Sherman Edwards—was a hit in 1969, running for 1,217 performances and winning three Tonys, including Best Musical. Also nominated that year?

Hair. The competition sounds like the decade’s culture wars in microcosm: dead white guys vs. the voice of youth. Yet 46 years on, Hair is not a whit less a period piece—and decidedly mustier.

If provocativeness is your criterion for good theater, consider that one number in 1776— “Cool, Cool, Considerate Men,” which sends up the conservatives in Congress who opposed independence—was pointed enough that President Nixon, no less, pressured the producers to remove it from the (otherwise impeccably faithful) 1972 film version. (It was eventually added back in, and can be seen on TCM’s annual July 4 airing.)

But it’s easy to argue the show’s continuing pertinence. One bon mot from Pennsylvania’s John Dickinson— “Most men with nothing

would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor”—perfectly explains why today’s GOP has convinced a significant chunk of the 99% to vote for policies that benefit only the 1%. And all too apparent as you watch the musical is the contrast between the way politicians back then handled conflict, when something truly monumental was at stake, and today, where philosophical differences generally devolve into mere tribal rancor and a porcine refusal to get anything done. 1776, Gehrig points out, “is about some amazing people who stuck their necks out; they were essentially being treasonous.”

More urgently, the Continental Congress’ clash over whether slavery should be allowed in the newborn U.S., which forms 1776’s climax, sent out racial shock waves felt to this day, every day. And its mention of the issue brings us full circle to the idea of non-traditional casting. Lisa Clarke, the production’s Martha Jefferson, is half-Jamaican—a choice that resonates tellingly with what we know about Thomas’ sexual history. Joshua reflects: “There wasn’t an intent to cast a non-white actress as Martha, but I think we all thought it would be ironic, and a bit of a sly wink, if it turned out that way. It’s entirely possible that it will be seen as intentional by the audience, and I think that’s OK. I think it’s a good conversation to have!” E

Few comics have a more fervid following than Izzard. His fans can quote long passages from his 1999 breakthrough show, Dressed to Kill, but times change. Izzard has mostly left the transvestite frills behind him, and he’s broadened his performance palette to include more conventional acting roles—like a recent turn on TV’s Hannibal. One would hesitate to say that his famously adroit, hairpin mind and verbal dexterity have slowed down; rather, middle age has made his humor more contemplative and deliberate.

Izzard’s current show, Force Majeure, is a wellbehaved beast, now in its third year. Politics are very much on Izzard’s mind, and he’s repeatedly floated the idea of running for mayor of London.

Izzard is no longer the freely silly riffer of his youth. The title of his show refers to our hollow persistence—in a largely godless Europe—in calling a catastrophe “an act of God.” But lest that sound too serious, he also does bits on dressage, alternative histories, talking chickens, and Die Hard—the musical! Juliet McMains

UW dance professor McMains has been turning a scholarly eye on social dancing for quite some time—her first book, on competition ballroom dancing, teased apart the multiple strands of influence that go into creating that world. Her new book, Spinning Mambo Into Salsa (Oxford University Press, $99), follows the recent creation of salsa dancing, a pan-Latin development of the Cuban mambo that has almost as many versions as it does performers. She will outline some of the wild differences between Miami, New York, and Los Angeles styles in her talk; then everyone can head upstairs to the Century Ballroom to

spurred Joshua. Another catalyst was last summer’s controversy surrounding the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s production of The Mikado, which raised the question of just who is allowed to play whom onstage: How demographically similar to a given role must an actor be? One criticism of the show was that the Society cast no Japanese actors (“yellowface” was one epithet flung at it)—but if a non-Japanese Pooh-Bah was objectionable, would a non-Danish Hamlet be? Why or why not? Or, for that matter, a female John Hancock? Who decides?

After that, “people were ready to have a conversation about non-traditional casting,” Joshua says. And once the gender wall was breached, why not rethink other limitations? “Once you have all women,” she goes on, “they don’t all have to be white, age doesn’t matter,” and casting can draw on “such a breadth of different kinds of actresses—not the traditional ingenue” of musical theater. This in turn helped circumvent an obvious roadblock: the 25:2 gender ratio that makes 1776 so hard to stage. (The 5th Avenue did it beautifully in 2001, but Seattle hasn’t seen it since.) When you’re obligated to use every available guy, admits Pat Haines-Ainsworth, this production’s Ben Franklin, “sometimes you don’t

But it was more than a love of the piece that

cast as appropriately as you should.”

(The show’s all but untouchable by universities, which can’t mount a fulldress musical that leaves an entire sex, generally the more numerous one in the drama department, in the lurch.)

Then what about those two female characters? Over the years in Seattle there’s been a rich and brilliant tradition of gender play onstage: drag and cabaret, camp and boylesque, Dan Savage’s Greek Active productions, Ian Bell’s Brown Derby Series.

Joshua’s approach, however, is not in that vein—though she’d considered it. A male Martha and Abigail? “That would be a riot,” she says, “—but then I thought, ‘I don’t want this to be a riot.’ ” Rather, she wanted it to be the show she’s loved for decades.

As director Keith Gehrig puts it, “We’re not going for some other joke” on top of the humor already in the play.

Joshua adds that “None of us are going for the illusion”—breast-binding, fake facial hair, deepened voices, what have you. The women in the cast are directly playing the characters, as opposed to playing men who are playing the characters—a significant distinction. This necessitated one change to the letter of the book, to preserve its spirit: A comic moment made of a long kiss between Thomas and Martha Jefferson is to be done here simply as a warm embrace to avoid distracting from the tenderness of the scene. (Woohoo! Two chicks making out! ) On the other hand, having the Adamses’ Puccinian love duets sung by two sopranos in close harmony, rather than by a baritone and a soprano with more acoustic distance between them, makes them all the more ravishing and moving. Haines-Ainsworth offers the last word on the gender switch: “Hopefully after the first couple minutes, it will become a non-issue.”

ven back in sixth grade, falling in love with the film version of the musical 1776 in history class, aspiring actress Jasmine Joshua knew she’d never be cut out to play one of its two female roles, Martha Jefferson or Abigail Adams. But that seed grew into a devotion to the 1969 show, and a dream of staging it—and a realization: What, really, was stopping her from playing one of the 25 male roles?

Which led to this weekend’s marvelously improbable production: the tale of the Second Continental Congress and the three contentious months it spent forging our nation, told by an allfemale cast, with Joshua at last realizing her ambition to take on the central role of the hotheaded John Adams. Arriving in Seattle in 2012 from the Bay Area and talking up the idea whenever possible, Joshua began, as she puts it, “collecting people like a magnet.” A year ago, in Seattle Musical Theatre’s production of Tommy, she met, and fired up, actress Rebecca Lane (who plays the pivotal role of Pennsylvania’s James Wilson). Lane challenged her—“If you’re serious,” she told Joshua, “I’m serious”—and the first step was a simple table read. “We’ll just get 20 women in my living room,” Joshua recalls, to see what might come of it.

Another recruit was Barb Klingberg, veteran Broadway costumer since the ’70s (she worked on Annie, A Chorus Line, and Chicago, among others). When she popped up, willing to donate her services, Joshua says, she knew they had to do a full production. Even more encouraging was the $5,000 raised on Indiegogo. Joshua approached Twelfth Night Productions to co-produce—and guide her, a rookie, through the process, starting with securing the rights to the play.

Fresh Dressed

When I first got to New York in the ’80s, the proliferation of hip-hop styles amazed me.

First the graffiti, then the music, and finally the fashion. How did they get the shoelaces so large on those immaculate white Adidas? This celebratory new doc by Sacha Jenkins explains: starch the laces, iron them (!), then route them in a pattern entirely on top of the tongue. A lot of thought went into the process—just like those new bubble scripts then adorning the IRT cars and those new breaks that DJs were spinning from the South Bronx and beyond.

Fresh Dressed includes some boldface names (producer Nas, Sean Combs, Pharrell Williams, etc.), but its real interest comes from those who might be called the foot soldiers of fashion. There was one guy in New York, Dapper Dan, who outfitted the region’s top rappers, combining knockoff logos with new tailoring.

There was one guy in L.A., Karl Kani, who dressed Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of BelAir, making those bold colors and parachute pants a national phenomenon.

Decades later, there’s a nostalgic tinge to these memories. Christopher Reid, Kid of Kid ’n’ Play, recalls how being asked “What’s your size?”—as in shoe size—was a dangerous prelude to having your Jordans boosted at gunpoint. Later came an unseemly gold rush among musicians to create their own brands, à la Hilfiger. “Shaker Loops is a multifaceted title,” John Adams says of his 1978 piece for strings. “ ‘Shake’ in string parlance means to move the bow rapidly across the string, thus causing a tremolo, or fast buzzing sound. But ‘shake’ also conjures images of the Shaker sect and particularly the shaking and trembling that accompanied their legendary sacred services.” This combination of agitation and lofty, trancy dreaminess made the work one of Adams’ earliest and most startling successes. ‘’Loaded with novel, even outrageous ideas,” he says, “performing it demand[s] visibly strenuous activity from the players, an energy that [is] quickly communicated to the listener.” Sounds like an ideal piece for adept young players—likely just the idea Joshua Roman had when he invited Seattle Youth Symphony players to join the season finale of his “Town Music” concert series.

With Roman on the podium, they’ll also play Bartok’s vinegary Divertimento and a new commissioned work by Timo Andres—who in his Shy and Mighty album of works for two pianos freely admits the influence of Adams while stirring in generous dollops of crusty, bare-knuckle Ives. DIRTY In Andrew Hinderaker’s 2012 play, Matt (Anthony Darnell) abruptly quits his VC firm to launch a startup promising ethnical, non-exploitative porn, with 90 percent of the proceeds going to charity. Ably performed under the direction of Michael Place, this Washington Ensemble Theatre production is less dirty than it sounds; money, not sex, drives Act 1, with much talk of interest rates, loan collateral, and market share. Act 2 introduces the fresh new public face (and body) for Matt’s startup: Leah Salcido Pfenning’s Mikayla, who first appears in a form-fitting red dress. Even then, however, Dirty is more concerned with the economic than the erotic. Hinderaker’s smartly conniving characters refer to Twitter followings, Google searches, Kickstarter, online privacy, vulture capitalists, and Amazon versus Walmart. Yet he plotting and characters are entirely traditional; Matt and Katie could as well be Paul and Corrie in Barefoot in the Park; and cyberporn could just as well be advertising. • CHIHO AOSHIMA This is SAAM’s second exhibit by

a contemporary young Japanese artist associated with Takashi Murakami. (The artist known as Mr. was the guy who recently filled a gallery with tsunami detritus.)

Aoshima is a woman, however, who ought to provide a different perspective on the oppressive sexism of most anime. In addition to 30-plus drawings and two large “dreamscapes,” her show Rebirth of the World will include new animated work, Takaamanohara (or The Plain of High Heaven), dealing with Shinto deities. In her typically colorful paintings, ethereal kawaii sprites roam in enchanted glades where the colors are anything but natural. Long, undulating hair mixes into the undgrowth and vines, suggesting deeper connections to the planet. There are cityscapes, too, as in her 2005 animation City Glow, where the towers rise like wormy, human-faced figures. The corporeal, architectural, and natural realms blur together in her work. • DISGUISE: MASKS AND GLOBAL AFRICAN ART

Let me immediately stop you from thinking this is a history show, with all the dull anthropology and colonial guilt that implies. Instead, this is a contemporary show featuring 10 emerging artists with roots in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and even Japan. (Remember the “global” part, which extends to the U.S., too.)

Wikipedia says that Army men toys originated in 1938 and lost popularity during the Vietnam War (a decade before Vincent’s birth), which sounds about right. New York artist Nathan Vincent returned to a familiar icon of boyhood for his room-filling new installation Let’s Play War! Any child of the postwar era will recall those cheap little green Army figurines endlessly

About two inches tall, with a few set poses/characters (bazooka, radioman, flame thrower, rifleman, etc.), they stand or lie in little plastic puddles, arms and legs forever fixed in position. During a visit last week, Vincent explained how he 3-D scanned the wee infantrymen, scaled them up (to 36–48 inches tall), and wrapped them in crochet. The installation, pitting eight green G.I.s against eight tan troopers, is all about violence, identity, and gender roles, says Vincent: “I’m interested in the way we’re indoctrinating children.” (For girls, he also mentions Barbie, perhaps the basis for a future knit project.) Recalling his own boyhood, says Vincent, “I begged my mother to teach me how to crochet”—a soft, distaff art, unlike the stereotypically masculine military. There’s only one

As seen in the movie, hosts and guests assume

certain roles, as Brice has noted in his own life.

“When I have people over,” he says, “I’m always very excited to have them there. But that’s always mixed with a lot of anxiety. And a lot of pressure, in terms of making their experience great. Whenever a new person comes into my apartment, I always give them the tour. I am always showing them things on the shelf and talking about it in way I would never talk about it with my wife.”

Schwartzman is more ambivalent about guesting and hosting. “When I grew up,” he says, “we didn’t really have a lot of people coming over.

We were just kind of like the homebody-type family.” And today, he notes, it can be hard to decide when a dinner party ought to end. “It’s awkward getting someone out of your house. I went to a guy’s house for a small dinner party, and someone was mid-story, and he said, ‘Well, thank you so for coming.’ And everyone got up and left. I like that boundary. I don’t want anyone fucking hanging out in my house. I’m grumpy, I’m a curmudgeon. So I don’t want anyone in my house very long.”

Today’s young parents tend to include children in such in-home socializing, unlike the era when adults swilled cocktails in the den, no children in sight. “I think that’s a good thing,” says Brice. “I think the loss of the den is a good thing. For me and my wife, it’s a pleasure to be around the kids, especially because we don’t have them yet. That is part of the fun—the whole experience of putting them to bed, then having some adult time.”

Schwartzman isn’t so sure. “You hear stories of old Hollywood, like ‘Bogie and Sinatra used to love to have people over.’ Imagine what it would have been like to go to Humphrey Bogart’s house for an evening with a few friends.”

n unsettling little raise-the-stakes comedy that I saw and liked during SIFF, The Overnight has some sexual kinks up its sleeve, but what the movie’s really about is the difficult nature of friendship in the Facebook age. Once upon a time, before smartphones and the Internet, married couples—kids entrusted to the babysitter—might gather for cocktails in the home, sometimes knowing little about their new neighbors. Alcohol was a social lubricant during the postwar era when adults better understood the protocols and boundaries of what was once called entertaining. Patrick Brice’s feature, opening Friday, now shows it to be a lost, awkward art for Gen Xers and millennials.

Set in L.A., The Overnight is a one-night romance between one married couple (Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling) and another ( Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche) after their young sons bond at the playground. A joint family pizza dinner leads to booze, pot, skinnydipping, and the progressive baring of souls.

Sitting down earlier this month with Brice and Schwartzman, I asked if it’s harder for today’s wired young adults to make and manage new friendships face to face. “We are lucky in our business,” says Schwartzman. “We meet people, but again that makes it more difficult.

There are a lot of phony ‘Hey, we got to stay in touch’ [moments], but I do think if you are open to it, there is a constant opportunity to work with new people. I listened to Bill Murray on Howard Stern, and I’m paraphrasing, but they said something about having a phone where you don’t give anyone your number. It’s like, ‘I don’t want anyone to call me, I don’t have time to make new friends, I’m not going to make new friends.’ And I like the honesty.”

It’s easy to duck calls or ignore IMs, but it’s a different matter when socializing in someone’s home, says Brice. “I get anxious anytime I’m going over to anyone’s house. I want to impress them. I want to be the funniest version of myself.

Oddly enough, there is a guilt I will have [when] I realize they put a lot of effort into me coming over. They went out and bought flowers. Looks like they bought food for us. They put out snacks.

My heart sank a little when Alonso Ruiz Palacios, the director of Güeros, showed up onscreen halfway through this movie, asking the actors what they think of the screenplay. Oh, boy—that breaking-the-fourth-wall gag is the kind of thing you’re supposed to get out of your system in film school. In retrospect, though, the intrusion actually kind of works for this loosey-goosey Mexican film. Güeros begins with a prank—undersized teen Tomás (Sebastián Aguirre) drops a water balloon on a neighbor— and the film that follows is full of tricks. It’s shot in black-and-white and an antique aspect ratio (boxy rather than widescreen), it’s full of storytelling threads that never pay off, and its characters idolize a musician whose music we can’t hear—the movie goes silent whenever they listen to a cassette tape.

There is yard work, there is gardening, and then there is Versailles. In late 17th-century France, Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) is a single professional woman whom we’d today call a landscape architect. She’s in the indirect employ of King Louis XIV (director Alan Rickman) to help her boss André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) create Rockwork Grove. That amphitheater, with its backdrop of cascading waters, is real, as were Le Notre and the Sun King, though Sabine is an entirely invented character.

But then, she’d have to be: Sabine is undaunted by sexism, unimpressed by most men, uncompromising in her design ethos (more nature, less culture), and constantly rolling up her sleeves up to prune trees, lift timbers, and drop new schematics in André’s startled lap. He’s trapped in a loveless marriage to a compulsive cheater who disdains his muddy profession.

Cassette tape? Yes, it’s 1999, the year of a serious student strike in Mexico City. Tomás is sent to the city to live with his older brother, nicknamed Sombra (Tenoch Huerta). Although Sombra and his roommate Santos (Leonardo Ortizgris) ought to be part of the university strike, they’re too absorbed in slacking off to actually get involved. Eventually the three guys get in a car and drive around Mexico City, picking up the committed activist Ana (Ilse Salas) on campus and haphazardly searching for the cult musician they worship. Not every film artist has the charisma to step to the other side of the camera. Scorsese and Tarantino are exceptions, as is Alejandro Jodorowsky, the eccentric maverick director celebrated in last year’s Jodorowsky’s Dune. In that doc, in a supporting role, we also met a collaborator on his neverfilmed Dune: Swiss artist H.R. Giger. Along with other survivors from the Dune debacle, all owing a career boost to the ebullient Jodorowsky, Giger went on to Alien, earning an Oscar for his unforgettable monster designs. Giger made royalties from the subsequent Alien spinoffs, contributed to a Poltergeist sequel, but largely disappeared from view until filmmaker Belinda Sallin began tailing him a few years back.

Yet right after she finished her movie, as noted in an epilogue, the frail, shuffling Giger (1940–2014) died following a fall. So Dark Star now functions as a rather incomplete elegy to the artist, made 40 years after his peak influence. Likely because of clearance issues, there aren’t any Alien film clips here. We see plenty of Giger’s art, an Alien-themed bar he ran, and a museum begun under the auspices of his second wife, Carmen, an entirely more sympathetic (and oddly optimistic) figure than her gnomic husband. Home movies from the late ’60s and ’70s show the brooding young Giger as a morbid, self-taught outsider artist. Dark Star unfortunately favors the tail end of his career, so we don’t learn much about Giger’s ’70s success designing album covers (e.g., 1973’s Brain Salad Surgery for Emerson, Lake & Palmer). He was clearly in the right cultural milieu, including sci-fi magazines, to attract Jodorowsky’s eye. But the latter is never heard, and we only see Alien director Ridley Scott in an old set interview.

Giger’s latter days, signing books and posters for his Goth- and metal-loving fans, are fairly dismal. He lives in a book-crammed hoarder’s den with wife, cats, and a few assistants. To them, and various acolytes, Sallin shows far more deference than is due. This is an inescapably sad movie about a one-note artist who acquitted himself best when unseen, working alone at the easel. Remember the monster, not the man. BRIAN MILLER

feature) teases us with possible storylines that go phhffft: a scary encounter with a gang member, for instance, and a subsequent bit of thievery from a public garden. In this film, crunching on stolen carrots becomes a surreal bit of behavior, for no reason other than it strikes the movie’s fancy.

Just as the young people are casting about for some alternative way of life, so the movie is grabbing at ways to avoid the predictable. It’s larky, and therefore likable, although the youthful spirit rarely deepens into anything beyond that. (One important question is raised: Who thought of the continental breakfast? On which continent do they serve such a chintzy meal? This ongoing conversation doesn’t have an answer, either.)

If you’re inclined toward this kind of mischief, Güeros is a good bet. But keep in mind, the water balloon is intended for us. ROBERT HORTON

sabotage, and past trauma in need of healing, A Little Chaos can only end with Sabine triumphant. She triumphs over a soft script—couldn’t they afford a Tom Stoppard rewrite?—and stock characters not just because this is Kate Winslet, Titanic survivor (her heart will go on), but because Rickman has flanked her with so much British acting talent. Everyone here is comfortably above the material, just as Louis himself maintains a weary, self-humoring distance from earthly clamor and craves “the ease” of a companionable new wife. (That ringing sigh pours from Rickman’s gullet like bourbon decanted from century-old oak; it’s not just a king’s impatience with a frivolous world, but an actor’s imperious disdain for an entire shallow industry.)

Oh, but there’s one surprise to these pleasant, predictable proceedings. Schoenaerts’ Belgian bulk came to prominence in Bullhead and Rust and Bone, but Rickman keeps his torso covered until a late (very late) sex scene.

Carl and Jean Boenish Winslet is the musin preflight mode. cular aggressor here, and Schoenaerts nicely parries with recessive feints and demurrals. Never mind the muscles; his best feature is a long, downcast nose—a water feature naturally designed for tears, until Sabine comes along. BRIAN MILLER

Filmed in Everett with a L.A. cast and writer/director (Jay Martin), this compact, familiar heist flick hews strictly to B-movie convention. Our handsome hero and his pregnant girlfriend hope only to escape their dead-end town. He’s got one cynical pal and another with a short fuse, and together they decide to rob a crooked banker to repay a drug debt.

Needless to say, their planned seven-minute bank robbery goes very, very wrong, with many elliptical, expository flashbacks to amplify the hows and whys to this dog day morning.

Before the bullets fall and the cops storm the besieged bank, 7 Minutes shows a bit of Great Recession grit. The pudgy, lovelorn town cop wearily returns home, his sleeping mother asleep in front of a static-filled TV screen, to the attic bedroom where his childhood model airplanes still dangle from the ceiling. Everyone drives cars from the ’70s and uses flip-phones. The bank even still has typewriters sitting on linoleum desks. Drained of color, 7 Minutes could almost pass for a ’50s noir, but for Martin’s regular spasms of slo-mo violence. It’s a functional, formulaic little genre film also available on iTunes and on-demand this Friday. Kris Kristofferson shows up as a sage baddie, and Jason Ritter (of Girls) is the only other recognizable face. Speaking of how the white man stole this land from the Indians (and telegraphing the movie’s end), he says, “We’ve been cursed ever since.”

No Native Americans appear in the film to answer that claim. On the other hand, why would they want to? BRIAN MILLER

Sunshine Superman RUNS FRI., JUNE 26–THURS., JULY 2 AT SIFF FILM CENTER. RATED PG. 101 MINUTES.

The film was apparently eight years in the making, but Sunshine Superman happens to open just after the death of Dean Potter, which might color its rainbow feel-good spirit just a tad. Potter was the superstar climber and BASE jumper who fell to earth in May after he illegally leaped off a very high place in Yosemite (another jumper died with him). That event kindled some much-needed discussion about whether BASE jumpers are romantic daredevils or irresponsible adrenaline junkies who endanger themselves and others. Potter is not mentioned in this documentary, but his spirit—whichever side of the argument you fall on—is much in play.

The main figures here are Carl and Jean Boenish, pioneers in the BASE jumping practice. The movie re-creates the moment when the term BASE was coined: The letters stand for bridge, antenna, span, and Earth—things that can be jumped from. (The nerdiness of needing to invent that acronym, as well as the color-coded jumpsuits and the gungho planning, give this movement a distinct Wes Anderson feel.) Carl Boenish was an engineer and a parachutist who embraced filmmaking after getting hired to do aerial stunts for the 1969 John Frankenheimer picture The Gypsy Moths. He strapped a 16-millimeter film camera to his helmet and started throwing himself off cliffs and unfinished skyscrapers, thereby attracting the attention of like-minded enthusiasts as well as the authorities in places like Yosemite. He also attracted Jean, an unnervingly calm presence who nevertheless jumped off plenty of high places with her husband.

First-time filmmaker Marah Strauch skillfully interweaves the Boenish story—full of copious vintage footage shot by Carl—with dramatizations and interviews. There are no contemporary interviews with Carl, for reasons that become clear halfway through the film, as we get the story on what happened in Norway in 1984 after Carl and Jean set a world record. Carl is repeatedly heard insisting that “everything happens for a reason,” a mantra that can be used to justify a lot of crazy behavior. Strauch’s affection for this manic character undoubtedly explains the film’s festival success, along with the liberal deployment of shots of people gliding through the air to familiar ’70s pop tunes. A note of demurral: I couldn’t shake the feeling that the movie is like being around people so enthusiastic about their cause that they can’t acknowledge that their charismatic leader appears to have a screw loose. The rest of us are encouraged to share the enthusiasm, and perhaps you will, but a dash of skepticism might have made a better movie. ROBERT HORTON E film@seattleweekly.com

INSIDE OUT Pixar has updated the mapping of our minds

with a colorful palette, using the very latest technology and even consulting neuroscientists. The fanciful animated result is a combo of Oz-style quest and bright-hued PET scan. Orbs containing the memories of 11-year-old girl Riley careen down ramps and tubes like a pachinko machine devised by Rube Goldberg for the digital age. They’re deployed by five rival/collaborative emotions who run the central control board within Riley’s cartoon cranium. Inside Out’s squabbling characters of Joy (voiced by chipper Amy Poehler), Sadness, Fear, Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust are like film directors vying for control of a runaway project called Riley. The film’s more serious than expected, less silly and slapstick in tone than prior Pixar efforts.

For parents, Inside Out will be an occasion to talk with their kids about sadness—or Sadness, the blue-haired party-pooper who seems to ruin every memory orb she touches. Part of the pathos here is how much of childhood must be forgotten to reach puberty and adulthood. (PG) B.R.M. Ark Lodge, Majestic Bay, Varsity, Admiral, Kirkland, Bainbridge, Pacific Place, Thornton Place, others LOVE & MERCY During discreet periods in the ’60s and ’80s, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson is portrayed as a young visionary (Paul Dano) and a fragile, terrified older man (John Cusack). Yet somehow Bill Pohlad’s biopic manages to capture a lot of history in those few years. Dano radiates a state of near-bliss as Wilson creates Pet Sounds with the greatest studio musicians in L.A. in a studio he treats as an artistic playroom.

Cusack doesn’t look much like Dano, but he has the same expression of sincerity and openness, trapped in the frail mind of an infantilized adult. Paul Giamatti’s sleazy, abusive shrink makes this Wilson a kind of psychological prisoner. But, thankfully, the film does have a kind of heroine: Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks), who helps rescue the older Wilson from Dr. Landy and his many meds. Love & Mercy shows Wilson’s demons and drives—how his creative freedom away from the band cost him the emotional support of his brothers. All of which makes the final harmony that much sweeter.

(R) SEAN AXMAKER Sundance, Kirkland, Ark Lodge, Meridian, Thornton Place, Lincoln Square, Lynwood (Bainbridge), others ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL Said dying girl is Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a Pittsburgh classmate— but not friend—of high school senior Greg (Thomas Mann), a movie obsessive who wants nothing more to be the next Wes Anderson. Greg and Earl (RJ Cyler) are a misfit duo of filmmaking buddies in a chaotic, teeming public school full of bullies and jocks, cliques and castes. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon helmed several episodes of Glee, and it’s fair to assume that he and screenwriter/source novelist Jesse Andrews still have all the slights and indignities of high school seared into their brains. The movie’s first half is an utterly delightful spin on the usual mopey YA themes.

It’s impossible to stop smiling at Greg and Earl’s series of arthouse movie remakes (their own private Criterion Collection), including My Dinner With Andre the Giant and A Sockwork Orange. However, in this unusual two-act structure, following a major misdirection ploy, there must be leukemia, Greg’s growing attachment to Rachel, prom, and finally a college-admissions crisis that the film doesn’t really need. But the movie works, perhaps because—decades after high school—you remember the laughter more than the tears. (PG-13) B.R.M. Pacific Place, Guild 45th, Lincoln Square, SIFF Cinema Uptown, others THE WOLFPACK New York filmmaker Crystal Moselle somehow discovered the six Angulo brothers, who were raised inside a shabby apartment, home schooled, and only rarely allowed to go outside by their overprotective father. She found them taking a tentative prowl around the streets while dressed as characters from Reservoir Dogs. This is where Moselle’s documentary gets fascinating. The Wolfpack interviews the family members, observes them in their cramped surroundings, and shows how engaging (if naïve) the Angulo boys are. What saved them, apparently, was the movies. For some reason, father Oscar amassed a library of hundreds of films, which the brothers memorized and re-enacted. The and roleplaying put the brothers not far from Geek Nation at large, but for many such teenagers those activities are an escape from the world; for the Angulos, they’re a connection to it. • DOPE Eighteen-year-old Malcolm (Shameik Moore)

is a brainy nerd from a poor section of L.A. who’s possessed of a profound love for high flattop haircuts, acid-washed jeans, BMX bikes, Air Jordans, and A Tribe Called Quest. At the same time, he’s very much a creature of the iPhone present, conversant in Bitcoin and Silk Road. He’s savvy enough to recognize an opportunity when a bag of MDMA drops into his hands.

So which path is more promising—the thug life or the Ivy League? Written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Dope starts with the irresistible, cheerful energy of its central trio: earnest Malcolm, wry Diggy (Kiersey Clemons), and irrepressible Jib (Tony Revolori). Dope works best in chase-comedy mode, as our heroes blunder from one hazard to the next, constantly switching codes among different classes and milieus. Famuyiwa’s comedy is both smart and—in its latter third, especially—a little sloppy. A final bit of stand-and-deliver didacticism doesn’t bother me either. DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN No classic, but still a lot of fun, Susan Seidelman’s 1985 screwballmeets-East Village comedy arrived just as Madonna was climbing the charts and showcases her presuperstar charm. A credible Rosanna Arquette is the bored, neglected Long Island housewife who suffers amnesia, causing her to be mistaken for said Susan.

Aidan Quinn, one handsome dude at that stage in his career, then falls for the unwitting imposter—despite her bad reputation. Despite all the silly coincidences and a rather ragged third act that sews everything up, Susan remains one of the more engaging romantic comedies of its period. It’s Seidelman’s love letter to the downtown NYC scene, hence a companion piece to Scorsese’s similar but more darkly comic After Hours (also with Arquette), which came out the same year.

HAIRSPRAY John Waters proudly wore the mantle of cult film director back in 1988, but cult movies don’t pay the mortgage. For that reason, he had a huge and welldeserved crossover hit with Hairspray, which also gave Divine (aka Harris Glenn Milstead) her first mainstream role. Like most of Waters’ films, Hairspray is rooted in Baltimore, which he lovingly recreates during the kitschy yet wholesome early ’60s, when plump Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) desperately wants to appear on the Corny Collins dance show. Tracy’s willpower is unstoppable, and her dance moves are undeniable. It helps, too, that she has the solid family support of her mother (Divine) and father (Jerry Stiller). Along with the retro dance music, there’s the sly subversion of the supporting players (Debbie Harry, Mink Stole, Pia Zadora, etc.). Waters would never be so gauche as to make a message movie, but the message is there: Camp can coexist peacefully with sincere emotion, squares and queers can get along fine, and life can be one big dance party. Midnight, Sat. JAWS Let us now praise the greatest summer movie ever made. When pitched Peter Benchley’s novel, Steven Spielberg realized, “This is kind of a sequel to Duel!” In place of the marauding big rig, a marauding shark. In place of the small car piloted by Dennis Weaver, we have the famously too-small boat containing Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfuss.

The constant, of course, is the fear of a larger, more powerful adversary whose presence is more felt— thanks to John Williams’ rumbling ostinato—than seen. Spielberg may be a master of spectacle, but its opposite is the terrifying lack of visual information, the malevolent unseen. How Kevin Kauer’s queer DJ collective and sartorial eye are raising the bar for Seattle club culture.

(DJ Nark) and his crew brought tracks off the beaten Billboard path—at a taste level that could compete with any serious DJ in the city.

“I wanted to show that some of the queer DJs in Seattle could throw down at least as well, if not a lot fucking better,” says Kauer. “I wanted to show that not all gay DJs and gay people were just running around screaming their tits off to Madonna.”

Bottom Forty doesn’t play any one type of music—Kauer says his sets will “go from the darkest, people-fisting-each-other-in-the-corner Berlin techno and end in diva, hands-in-the-air disco, with everything in between.” The diverse collective includes Kauer and DJs Riff Raff (Alea Mahone of Shade, “who’s totally killing it in Seattle right now”), Jayson Spaceotter (“our burner and music encyclopedia”), Derek Pavone (“calm and quiet but amazing with disco and house”), and most recently Hyasynth (Karen O’Branovich, local dancer and the collective’s first “straight” member). Their tagline: “Bottom Forty is a mirror ball in New York, a basement in Chicago, a cruise in L.A., and a night in the desert,” and they aren’t lying—their shows are as transportive as advertised.

Bottom Forty currently holds two standing parties, Interiors at Kremwerk every second Satur-

day, which starts with $1 beers on the patio in the evening and goes hard with DJs and dancing until 4 a.m., and Dickslap, which has been at the Eagle every third Friday for almost five years, beginning as a protest party against 2010 regulations from the Washington Liquor Control Board that unfairly targeted gay nightlife. And this week, Nark will host some of the most spectacular Pride events in the city. Nark’s fifth annual Gender Blender, which has raised almost $20,000 for LGBTQ causes over the years, will be held at Neighbours, featuring Violet Chachki, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Nark is also sponsoring drag queen and RuPaul finalist Ginger Minj at the Baltic Room on Wednesday, throwing a special Kink Pride edition of Dickslap on Friday, and on Saturday hosting their third annual Pride Cruise, a daytime party aboard a ship with dance floors on two decks.

Kauer always wants “everyone, everybody, and every body” to attend his events—“straight people, house-heads, drag queens, or breakdancing beat boys.” This is especially true for this year’s Pride. “Pride is where we all come together in solidarity and support each other,” Kauer says.

“And even though next week we’ll all go back to our exclusive things, maybe gay people will feel a

little less apprehensive towards the straight community, and maybe the straight community will feel a little less apprehensive, too, because they just went to this big gay weeklong rave.” E

verything Kevin Kauer touches turns to gold. No—maybe it’s more like gold lamé. Or glitter. Or better yet, it turns into sweat.

Kauer—legendary party promoter, photo blogger, and founder of DJ collective Bottom Forty—has been the sorcerer behind Capitol Hill’s high-profile gay-nightlife fantasia since he arrived in Seattle in November 2008.

“I moved here to get the fuck out of San Diego,” Kauer tells me. “And I moved to San Diego to get out of the cow town I grew up in.”

Kauer landed in Seattle almost on a whim, and his immediate infatuation with the Hill’s street style inspired him to start the photo blog Nark Magazine. “I chose the name Nark because I felt like even though I was part of the community, I was fresh to it, and I was invading these underground scenes and exposing them,” Kauer says. “I thought, well, someone shot photos of club kids in New York in the ’80s, and that’s why we have something to look at now. Someone needs to do that here.”

His crew included Stella Rose Saint Clair, who has since moved to New York and become niche-famous in the fashion world. The first time he met Saint Clair, Kauer told me she was in a flesh-colored leotard, a bedazzled metal breastplate, and a Mickey Mouse hat, all in the dead of winter. Around this time, Kauer wore a lot of fur, leather, jewelry, and face paint (a rather broad term considering bright stripes of color, fake blood, fake jewels, candy sprinkles, and pill capsules have all been part of his “face paint”).

Kauer’s photos of the scene became mythic in town.

“We just started going around and terrorizing the Hill, dressing crazy, becoming sort of instant celebrities for no reason,” said Kauer. “That was a really cool time. I didn’t know I was going to start DJing, I didn’t know I would start throwing parties or any of that stuff, I just knew that whatever I was going to do, I didn’t want it to be a hobby, I wanted it to be what I did.” At the time Kauer was barely surviving, using “every possible service imaginable, from food stamps to anarchist food banks to rent assistance,” staying at friends’ apartments when he was technically homeless, committing himself completely to Nark. But when the War Room closed at the end of 2009, Hard Times was over, and so were the photo ops.

Then, he says, “The opportunity fell in my lap to throw two parties the next week.” He’d never done anything like it before, but began hosting, promoting, booking, DJing, and shooting these two parties at Capitol Hill mainstay gay bars Pony and the Eagle to supply photos for Nark, which cyclically publicized the parties. Kauer’s events became a notorious freak-chic human menagerie, incubating the boldest club-kid couture the city had ever seen. It’s said observation has the power to change the observed, and Nark was the olly-olly-oxen-free every weirdo had been waiting for.

Soon after, Kauer gave this city its first queer DJ collective, Bottom Forty, which began as a Sunday party at the Cuff in 2012 where Kauer

A very special moment happened in the making of the movie Panther in 1995. On this particular womanloving jam, producers Dallas Austin and Diamond D got together pretty much every black woman that was making music during this time and put them on one song: Salt-N-Pepa, Queen Latifah, SWV, Amel Larrieux, MC Lyte, Mary J. Blige, Eve, Vanessa Williams, Crystal Waters, Zhane, En Vogue, and many more blessed the track. I think this was the highlight of my little black lesbian life. This song and video were peak, epic lesbianism. Hanging out with the gay goth kids in high school, I wore this song out. May we never forget T.A.T.U.’s 2003 MTV awards performance when they brought a gazillion girls onstage and they all made out.

My parents were livid. Meanwhile, the televised spectacle added 1,000 years of pleasure to my life. Hide your daughters.

I had tons of “best friends.”

It’s a code phrase that a lot of queer people use for their significant others. In my black upbringing when my aunts or uncles had same-sex partners, we’d say, “Oh, that’s Aunt Sherry’s friend, they live together.” There was never anything else said about it. We accepted it.

I love how this song shows women’s camaraderie and strength.

I was never quite sure if the two ladies from Floetry were dating, but I pretended they were singing to and about each other. The words and the sounds of this slow jam felt really sapphic.

I think it was their sensuality and smoothness.

I bought this album instinctually, and so did all my gay friends. We swayed together and cried together about girls who were on the fence about being with another girl. Floetry spoke to us.

This song gave me chills the first time I heard it. Not only is it a straight up-sex song, but it has two of the most androgynous, sexually fluid performers rocking out on it. I love when Janelle is singing about a lover and changes up her pronouns. Her ambiguity is refreshing and keeps her floating above artists that are tied down to traditional love stories.

Fux” and “I’m a Taxidermist—I’ll Stuff Anything”— belong to Head Wound City, the fleeting, feral supergroup side project of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of legendary Seattle post-hardcore heroes the Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Gabe Serbian and Justin Pearson of San Diego grind-freaks The Locust. The group’s sole record, 2005’s Head Wound City, rips through its blistering run-length in under 10 minutes. The band, fittingly enough, only played one brief show after its release. But 10 years later, the group has suddenly reunited to scream in the faces of the frenzied masses once more. We spoke to lead singer Blilie in anticipation of the group’s upcoming Seattle show.

SW: Do you think you’re the only band in history to have a reunion tour with less than 10 minutes of released material?

We did! We got together in San Diego in early January and wrote a record, and then recorded it with our old friend Ross Robinson, who did the Blood Brothers’ . . . Burn, Piano Island, Burn and a bunch of other super metal stuff. We’ll probably play most of the songs at the show. They’re way better than the old songs.

We’re just trying to sort out when the album is going to be released.

What’s the new album’s run length?

It’s about 25 minutes.

So it’s a double and a half.

Exactly.

Are the songs still two minutes and under?

Yup. There’s maybe a couple that are a little bit longer, but for the most part they’re two minutes and under.

This is a two-part question: 1) How did you learn to scream like you do? 2) Is it hard to still do 10 years later?

It was the first way that I ever sang. I was 15 or 16 at the time, and I was in Blood Brothers, which we started when we were 16, so it was a perfect outlet for the anger and frustration I was feeling at the time. I was lucky that band lasted 10 years and I got to continue to do it—I got better and better at controlling it. But there’s no real secret to it. When it comes down to it, it’s a completely incorrect way to use your voice. Now that I’m in my 30s, I try to take it easy before and after shows. When we played those Blood Brothers reunion shows, we were playing twice as long as we ever played before.

I saw your reunion show at the Showbox, you certainly proved you could still scream.

Thanks, man. For those shows it was a lot of physical preparation, because it had been seven or so years since we had done that, and it’s a really physically demanding band. I tried to work out a bit prior to the shows so I didn’t collapse mid-show.

You’ve never gotten vocal polyps or anything?

I’ve never been checked, so if I’ve never been checked, I can’t have them?

Fair enough.

Isn’t that how science works?

That’s exactly how science works. Weird question: I grew up listening to the Blood Brothers and Head Wound City. What struck me the most was that it was a bunch of young ectomorphic dudes who were kind of feminine but also really aggressive. So as a floppy, skinny young kid, it was empowering to hear people like me doing that.

That’s great to hear, that’s awesome.

Is it weird being a hero for a generation of young ectomorphs?

[Laughs] I’ve never really thought about it like that. I feel as if we are just one band in a long continuum of weirdos who liked hardcore but didn’t necessarily respond to the more masculine, aggressive tendencies of the genre. So we drew influences from Swing Kids, or The Locust, or Angel Hair, or Antioch Arrow—the bands that

still had all of that chaotic, frenetic energy, but were coming at it from a weird angle, an angle that I felt spoke more to me as a weak, gangly 15-year-old than the stuff that I felt a little bit shut out from.

For me, it’s just the best, because they’re two of my favorite guitar players. I love listening to them play together. They’re super in tune together, and they really lock in to one another.

Their communication is almost on an ESP, psychic level. They stand on opposite sides, they look in each other’s direction, and they just lock in. It’s really cool to watch. I love watching them play.

Are you stoked to be coming back home to Seattle?

I am. I’m up there a lot. I moved down to LA four years ago now, and I’m always going up there for the weekend. I love going back to the Northwest. I heard that Charlie’s is gone now?

As of last week.

Is Panache still there?

Panache is still there, and they still blare the hot club music out the front.

Phew. Well, good, sweet!

Oh, I’m sure there are tons. But on Saturday nights, I’m at home watching Million Dollar Listing: New York, so I’m not really sure.

Final question: If you could personally assemble a Head Wound City–style supergroup with any musician ever, who would you choose?

That’s already been done, my friend: The Traveling Wilburys. Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison. They slayed.

Do you feel as though, maybe, in some small way, you’re continuing the legacy of the Traveling Wilburys?

Getting older and going back to write new Head Wound City stuff, are you still drawing from those same sources? I know Nick Zinner is producing West African artists, and has gone in a different sonic direction.

I think that when you’ve been doing music for as long as I have, I just kind of draw from what’s inside. I have my influences that really gave me a great template to draw from when I was 16, but I think now, being an adult, I try to just sit down in front of my computer and see what comes out.

When we wrote this full-length, we wrote it in a week as well, and we wrote that one EP in a week.

So it’s really immediate and really focused. I think that we’re drawing off one another’s energy and seeing what comes out spontaneously. But you’re absolutely right, we have a whole lineage of bands we grew up with, that we were in, that we listened to over the years that subconsciously we’re always going to pull from, that are always going to be a part of our DNA. I don’t think it’s the case where it’s like ‘Oh, hey, I picked up this record, let’s do something like this.’ At this point it’s a more offthe-cuff, spontaneous process.

ooner or later, everything winds up in court. You spilled a scalding cup of java on your nads at the McDonald’s drive-through; the insurance company refuses to pay for “water damage”; you’re tired of HIGHERGROUND arsenic

BY MICHAEL A. STUSSER in the drinking water; ya feel like suing Costco . . . just because. And now that cannabis is entering the mainstream, it’s time to lawyer up, in this week’s legal round-up.

Legal Weed, But Not if You Have a Job

Colorado’s Supreme Court ruled last week that, regardless of the state’s legalization of marijuana, an employer can fire a worker who uses cannabis, even for medical reasons. The case couldn’t have had a more sympathetic poster boy: Brandon Coats, a 34-year-old quadriplegic, was a model employee, but was fired by Dish Network in 2010 after failing a random company drug test. (As if we needed another reason to hate television service providers.) Medical pot has been legal in Colorado since 2000, and Coats had a doctor’s authorization. He never smoked weed at work—nor was he ever under the influence during the day; he used cannabis in the evenings to help with sleep, muscle spasms, and stiffness. Even Dish doesn’t dispute this assertion. Nevertheless, a failed drug test won’t fly in the Zero Tolerance zone, and so, even though his home use was legal and off-duty, the company used their drug policy to terminate Coats.

While both medical and recreational marijuana are legal in Colorado, the court agreed unanimously (6-0) with the satellite television company, stating that laws that protect employees from being fired for “lawful activities” hold water only when those activities are legal under both state and federal law. Dish officials said they were as pleased as (non-alcoholic) punch with the decision: “As a national employer, Dish remains committed to a drug-free workplace and compliance with federal law.” Obviously, this ruling may waft over to Washington, which, like Colorado, has legalized recreational cannabis and is one of the 23 medical-MJ states. There’s only one solution to all this nonsense: Legalize cannabis at the federal level.

While I am not a lawyer by training, I have seen several episodes of Boston Legal (big fan of Bill Shatner’s over-the-top performances), and thus can conjecture. That may not be the correct term. Point is, I can extrapolate. So when I read about the Iowa Supreme Court affirming the right of a gal to be shitfaced drunk on her own porch, I’m seeing a green light for cannabis. In 2013, Patience Paye called the cops on her boyfriend. When officers showed up to investigate for domestic violence, they determined she was the aggressor, asked if she’d been drinking (she had indeed, with over three times the legal limit in her blood), and charged her with public intoxication. Paye’s lawyers appealed her conviction, making a case that her front steps weren’t public at all, and that she should never have been arrested. Patience was patient, and the Supreme Court saw her point, ruling last week that the porch of a private home isn’t considered public, so long as the resident hasn’t invited the general public to be there. It just follows, then, that if ya don’t invite the masses to smoke a fatty on your stoop, ya can’t be charged with public stonification. That’s just logical, man.

To make sure that these legal lawsuits and challenges continue to advance the cause, we now have the National Cannabis Bar Association! The goal of the newly formed NCBA is to provide attorneys who are specializing in cannabis a place to get stoned and talk shop.

Well, that, and to provide a networking platform to share ideas and strategies for a rapidly changing industry and complex political landscape.

“Attorneys have long been at the forefront of the fight for cannabis legalization,” said executive director Shabnam Malek. “Now that 23 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized cannabis, there is a clear need for an organization focused on the business aspects of law and cannabis.”

The NCBA board comprises legal eagles from six states (including Seattle attorney Mitzi Vaughn of Greenbridge Corporate Counsel). The organization is open not only to practicing attorneys, but to paralegals, law students, and retired lawyers who just want to get their hands on some of the legal chronic. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for the police to hold suspects at traffic stops without probable cause. That’s good news for folks with trunkloads full of contraband; cops can’t keep you waiting until the drug-sniffing dogs show up. (In Washington, of course, you’re allowed to drive around with up to an ounce of weed in your vehicle, though it’s probably not a great idea.) In the 6-3 decision, the justices ruled that holding a vehicle for even a few minutes violates the Constitution’s unreasonable-seizure shield.
