Man who killed sister gets 17 years

EVERETT – David Thorsen of Arlington admitted to killing his sister and will serve 17 years in prison for it.

Superior Court Judge Ellen Fair sentenced Thorsen to 204 months in prison at a hearing June 11.

That was four years and two months longer than the negotiated agreement

between Thorsen’s attorney and the prosecution.

Thorsen killed his sister, Karen Harris, on June 9, 2013, during an argument when he brutally attacked her on the family farm.

Fair said there are many disturbing facts in the case.

“I can’t ignore the elements,” she said. “The court can’t make this family whole again.”

She called it a family trag-

edy.

“In an instant half the family was gone,” she said.

MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Strawberry Festival starts this weekend with the annual Berry Run. The run starts at 8:30 a.m.

Saturday, June 13, at the Tulalip Amphitheatre. Run or walk one mile or 5-kilometers to raise money for the Lakewood cross country team. Kids Day also takes place Saturday from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m. at Asbery Field.

There will be kid-friendly entertainment and booths with some free activities.

The next event for the festival will be Tuesday, June 16. The Luncheon and Fashion Show from noon to 2 p.m. also will be at a new location, the Opera House.

Current and past royalty will wear today’s fashions.

Cost is $35.

The Talent Show will take place Thursday, June 18, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Children, teens and adults perform songs, dance, comedy, instrumentals and more. Cost is $5.

They know they can dance

MARYSVILLE – You hear it a lot around schools this time of year. “What classes are you taking?”

Usual responses are: “P.E., band, art, science, history …” Not too often do you hear, “Classical Dance.”

But that actually is one of the most-popular classes at Arts and Tech High School on the Tulalip Campus.

About 30 students were in teacher Josh Roehl’s new class this year. “It’s neat to see how the kids have grown,” he said.

At the start of the year, the students were uncomfortable even holding each other. Now, they politely ask someone in class to dance, rotate partners with ease, and guys even dance with the teacher.

“There’s too much sexual pressure in white culture on what dance is,” Roehl said.

“They don’t pair off, and it’s not exclusive. Each dance is a brand new conversation without talking.”

Roehl, who used to dance competitively, said he helps break the ice by telling the students about some of the blunders he has made.

“I tell them it will be the best or worst class they ever had, depending on what they put into it,” Roehl said.

Watching the students, it’s obvious almost all love the class. Many are focused on Roehl’s footwork as he teaches them the salsa. They learn from each other and give feedback on how to improve the dance. They smile, cheer, clap and give high 5’s when they get it right. When was the last time you saw that in a math class? Even students not in the class like to join in.

Freshman Kalysta Fortier said she took the class to learn leadership skills, but has enjoyed learning to

dance. “I want to take it as many years as I can,” she said.

Another freshman, Chanel Desenberg, said she was a little uncomfortable at first.

“The boys had more hormones than I did,” she said with a smile.

She started the year thinking she wanted to be a singer. Now, she said she might try dancing instead.

“I’ve been told I’m quite good at it, so I’ve been practicing daily,” she said.

Roehl said dancing is as popular as ever, thanks to TV shows like “Dancing with the Stars” and “So you think you can dance,” along with popular movies like the “Step Up” series and “Stomp the Yard.”

Listening to Roehl’s voice commands adds to the fun of the class. Examples include: “Ladies, grab that bicep.”

“You’re not letting him lead you.”

“Put up the stop sign, and then push threw the window.”

And, “Ladies you have my permission to run him over” if he doesn’t step aside.

Roehl said the class teaches leadership skills. Students tutor second-graders once a week. It also helps selfconfidence. He mentioned

one student who was one of shyest he’s ever known, but is now one of the best dancers in class.

“Anybody can do it (dance) if they are willing to learn,” Roehl said. “You get to interact with each other, which is crucial and fun.

And it’s work, but you don’t realize it.”

There’s a lot to do this summer

Summer is still a week away – though you wouldn’t know it by the great weather we’re having.

If outdoor, warmweather fun is high on your list of things to do, look no further than Marysville Parks and Recreation.

We’re so fortunate in this community to have a wealth of great recreation opportunities for kids and adults alike during the summer.

Our annual Strawberry Festival is a fantastic way to kick off summer and get our community excited about all the wonderful activities we have planned

ORDER AND DETERMINATION BY THE DIRECTOR Washington State is experiencing a drought emergency. We have record-low snowpack in the mountains, and snowmelt through the spring and summer is what traditionally keeps rivers flowing, crops watered, and fish alive. We are starting to feel the pain from this snowpack drought.

Impacts are already severe in several areas of the state.

More than 70 percent of the state's snow monitoring stations have record-low snowpack. As a result, many of our major rivers are forecasted to have record-low flows - the lowest in the past 64 years - between April and September. This shortfall is a serious threat to municipal and domestic water supplies, irrigated agriculture, and fisheries throughout Washington.

With the concurrence of Governor Inslee and following consultation with affected Indian Tribes, I hereby expand the drought emergency to include all of Washington State.

Snowpack conditions across the state have continued to decline since the initial regional drought declaration on March 13, 2015. Dozens of major rivers are at record-low flows for this date. The longer-term weather forecast is for warmer and drier-than-normal conditions for this spring and summer. Conditions are likely to get worse.

Reduced snowpack creates risks to municipal and domestic water supplies. The Department of Health has identified numerous water systems throughout the state that draw water from shallow alluvial aquifers, which are dependent on groundwater recharge from snowmelt.

Agriculture faces a risk of crop loss throughout the state. Farmers in the Yakima and the Walla Walla basins are being curtailed, which could have devastating impacts on orchards and vineyards. Curtailment is likely to occur in the Little Spokane, Nooksack, and Chehalis basins, and could occur for the first time ever in the Colville Basin. Loss to perennial crops in these regions would be a significant hardship to individual farmers and agricultural communities.

Throughout the state, there is a high risk that fish populations will experience hardship from extremely low flowing rivers this year. Hatcheries will face warmer water, increased risk of disease, and potential loss of water supply. Tributaries and smaller streams may drop to levels where stream channels become impassible to fish. Pools of water will become disconnected from other pools, isolating fish and increasing the risks of predation and harassment.

Therefore, in accordance with the provisions of RCW 43.838.405, IT IS ORDERED that all of Washington state is hereby under a drought emergency. This order is effective immediately and shall remain in effect through December 31, 2015, unless terminated prior to that date.

In accordance with the provisions of WAC 173-166-060, the Department of Ecology may, under the terms of this order, take the following emergency actions: (1) Issue emergency permits for water. (2) Approve temporary transfers of water rights. (3) Provide funding assistance to public agencies to alleviate drought conditions. (4) Take other actions depending on future developments.

Other state and local agencies with authority to issue permits or authorizations related to the drought emergency actions must provide a decision to an applicant within fifteen (15) calendar days of the date of application.

In accordance with the proclamation of the Washington Governor, dated January 3, 1989, (Centennial Accord), nothing herein shall impair or infringe upon the treaty reserved rights or governmental authority of any federally recognized Indian tribe nor shall this order be deemed an assertion of state authority over Indian reservation lands. The Department of Ecology intends to work cooperatively, on a government-to-government basis, with all affected tribes.

Field. Each week, you’ll learn a new way to get fit – whether it’s crossfit, boot camp or Umbra.

For whole-family entertainment, you just can’t beat our Sounds of Summer Concert Series and Popcorn in the Park outdoor movies. Our free Friday-night concerts feature some of the Northwest’s most-talented artists. All you’ll need is a lawn chair, blanket and snacks to enjoy cool tunes on a hot summer night.

If movies are more your style, grab your friends and family and join us on Saturday nights for a great lineup of popular films – including “Despicable Me II,” “Into the Woods” and “Big Hero 6.” Our local Kiwanis club provides the popcorn, so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy.

GETCHELL – A woman who suffered injuries while horseback riding was located, treated and packed out by rescue personnel June 8.

The woman was riding along a trail near the power line when she fell around 12:30 p.m. and called 911. She was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett around 2 p.m.

Rescuers were from the county sheriff ’s office, search and rescue, and Getchell, Lake Stevens and Granite Falls fire districts.

10 at Marysville jail disciplined for allowing teen to escape

The Herald MARYSVILLE – An investigation by the Marysville Police Department found widespread complacency in the jail was the reason 19-year-old Rhyan Vasquez was able to escape Sept. 22, 2014.

Ten people received some level of discipline, including the commander who reports to Police Chief Rick Smith. Jail officers had stopped doing head counts, in violation of policy, Smith said.

The officer who was in the room when Vasquez escaped was suspended without pay for three days.

Police Cmdr. Wendy Wade was suspended without pay for two days.

Interior doors between jail areas and the city courtroom also were left unlocked, and more supervision was needed in the jail, the investigation determined.

Vasquez was gone for nearly two days. His absence was discovered only when a public defend-

er showed up on Sept. 24, and staff couldn’t find his client. Police caught up with him two days later.

The 10 employees, all of whom had worked in the jail during the escape or in the days following, received a discipline letter.

The Marysville jail can hold up to 57 inmates. Each shift is required to conduct two head counts; two officers must separately do each count and compare notes. Two officers also are required now for mov-

ing inmates between areas of the building. The investigation found that when Vasquez escaped, another inmate had blocked the officer’s line of sight while using the hand sanitizer on the officer’s desk.

The escape happened while eight inmates were being brought back from a Bible study. Programs such as Bible study now take place inside the jail rather than in adjacent rooms. Vasquez was being held for misdemeanor warrants. He had

been scheduled to be transferred to the Snohomish County Jail to be held for investigation of firstdegree robbery. Vasquez, now 20, was convicted of that robbery and the Marysville escape. He was sentenced in April to four years in prison. Major policy changes weren’t needed, Wade said. Instead, the focus is to make sure procedures are followed, and that everyone knows there will be no “slipping back into complacency,” she said.

EVERETT – A Marysville man faces at least 20 years in prison after pleading guilty June 4 to raping his 6-yearold stepdaughter, whom he also advertised online for others to molest.

Police are still trying to identify anyone who may have answered almost 200 Craigslist ads the man and his wife posted.

Investigators recovered at least one video showing a man engaged in criminal behavior with the girl.

The Marysville man, 56, also could be facing federal child pornography charges. The girl’s mother, 34, remains charged with multiple sex crimes, including child rape.

The newspaper is not publishing their names to protect the identity of the child and her younger brother. Child Protective Services removed both from the home after the couple was arrested in November.

A child pornography investigation led Snohomish County detectives to the couple’s house.

An investigation in Florida uncovered evidence that the Marysville man was sending child pornography to a woman in Texas.

The email conversation centered on plans to meet up in Marysville so the pair could sexually abuse the man’s daughter, court papers say.

The child’s mother allegedly admitted that she also advertised online for massage services.

She reportedly admitted that she engaged in sexual activity if clients asked, court papers say.

Prosecutors allege that she is seen on a video playing a game on her phone while her daughter is being sexually abused by a man.

M’ville decides to put photos of M-P shooter in yearbook The Herald

MARYSVILLE — Staff and students from Marysville-Pilchuck High School decided to include photographs of the shooter, along with the victims, in its yearbook.

The shooter, Jaylen Fryberg, has his picture among the freshmen class and in foot-

ball and homecoming photos.

He was not part of a remembrance within the yearbook for the victims. The school asked those students’ families to choose a photo and provide words for the remembrance.

Galasso, Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, Gia Soriano, Andrew Fryberg and Nate Hatch before killing himself Oct. 24. Hatch recovered but the other five died.

The yearbook staff also prepared an optional insert that included pages with photographs and context about the tragedy.

Students were given the choice of whether they wanted to pick up the insert.

Marysville School District Superintendent Becky Berg said research was done into “the most appropriate ways to approach the content and layout of the yearbook” after the tragic events of the school year.

KILL FROM Page 1 and friends asked for the maximum sentence. They said Thorsen destroyed the family, forcing them to live in pain. They called him evil and a liar with a long history of alcohol and drug problems, for which he refused to seek help.

“He’s a danger to himself and the community,” Douglas Shuman said. “He’s unwilling to change. He deserves long-term confinement.”

He was judge, jury and executioner, and “now it is time for him to pay,” added Diane Shuman.

Thorsen’s attorney said nothing could fill the holes in the lives of the family. But to save his family the ordeal of a trial Thorsen changed his plea to guilty. He said in prison Thorsen would seek a positive change and sobriety.

Thorsen said he was “dreadfully sorry” for killing his sister, and he wished he could “bring her back.”

“She was my closest sibling growing up,” he said. “I love and miss her.”

Thorsen said in his two years in the Snohomish County Jail God has sustained him.

“I will never turn my back on the Lord again,” Thorsen said.

Deputy Prosecutor Hal Hupp said Thorsen took responsibility for the murder and recommended 154 months.

Thorsen said, “My job is done.” Gilbert asked what he meant by that.

Thorsen replied that it was his job to look after his dad, mom and sister, then indicated again his job was done. His dad, Jack, also died in a fall.

Harris’s body was found soon after that.

Sheriff ’s spokesman Shari Ireton said Thorsen also was investigated in the deaths of both of his parents, but the lead detective closed the cases because of a lack of evidence.

“If additional evidence surfaces, he could reopen the case,” she said.

That previously unreleased information was provided in a supplemental affidavit filed by Hupp.

Other evidence in that document says there was

evidence of a fight near where Harris’s body was found. There was a broken chair, a pair of broken sunglasses and a shoe belonging to Thorsen. The medical examiner reported that Harris died from an intracranial hemorrhage due to blunt impact to the head.

Police later found the other shoe in the family home Thorsen had been staying in with his mother, who reportedly fell down the stairs in the house and died the day before Harris was killed.

Thorson moved to the home two months prior, after his dad had died.

DNA found on Thorsen’s shorts and shirt had his blood and also Harris’s, the papers say. When Thorsen was examined that June 9, he had puncture wounds on his left hand. Blood was recovered from the bushes where Harris’s body was found. It was a genetic

match to Thorsen’s.

Thorsen apparently didn’t like his mother or sister much. In a letter addressed “Dearest Mom” 12 days before her death, Thorsen used disparaging language and curse words toward his mother, Betty, adding he hoped she would die.

On June 8, 2013, Betty Elaine Thorsen, 80, was dead, having fallen down the basement steps. Thorsen found her there and called police, who arrived at about 5:43 a.m.

Thorsen’s older sister, Harris, 53, arrived later that day at the home at 13229 240th St. NE. Thorsen wrote that he didn’t care much for Harris either. He used disparaging remarks about her, saying in a suicide letter she was not to receive any property upon his death.

According to charging papers: Thorsen, now 52, has

been in jail since June 9, 2013, on second-degree murder charges.

On that afternoon, once police left following the investigation of Betty’s death, neighbors heard screams.

Eight hours later, Harris’s son, Joel, saw on Facebook that his grandma had died.

He couldn’t figure out why his mom or uncle hadn’t told him. So he went to his grandma’s house and saw Uncle David extremely intoxicated. Joel filed a missing person report and searched all night for Harris.

About 5 the next morning he saw Thorsen riding a lawnmower and towing something.

Sgt. Steve Plaisance of the Snohomish County Sheriff ’s Department responded to the missing person report almost 6 1/2 hours later.

While talking to Joel, they heard a noise at the back of the property. They

found Thorsen sitting in a car behind a barn. The car was running, and windows rolled up. Thorsen had a beer in his lap and a hose attached to the exhaust pipe that led inside the Honda.

Thorsen passed out in the suicide attempt. A fire department aid crew revived him.

Plaisance said Thorsen later told him his father was gone, his mother was gone, and he wanted to go, too.

It wasn’t long after that that Plaisance found Harris’s body in a hedge among sticker bushes.

In his guilty plea, Thorsen said he was attempting to assault Harris, and she died as a result.

In court papers, Joel told police there was contention in the family regarding his grandfather’s will.

His mother was part of the dispute on how the property was going to be divided.

Girls don’t just deliver cookies

MARYSVILLE – Ever wonder where the money goes from all those cookies the Girl Scouts sell?

Some of it goes to “Joy Boxes.”

Girl Scouts who attend Liberty Elementary made the boxes a few weeks ago and delivered them to senior citizens June 9.

The two troops, for grades K-2 and third- to fifth-graders, made 24 boxes.

Under the direction of Nichole Coates, the 50 youngsters brainstormed ideas on what to put into the boxes.

“It was as girl-led as possible,” Coates said.

“They’re excited about it.”

crossword puzzles and more.

Allison Taylor of Catholic Community Services helped connect the Scouts to clients who would appreciate the gifts.

grader at Liberty, delivered her box to Lorraine Hodge, 87, of Marysville.

“It’s to make her feel special,” Kaysie said.

Mission accomplished.

“I’m really going to enjoy this,” Hodge said.

The items in the joy boxes (cards, clay dolls of themselves, origami hearts) were planned by them. They also voted to spend some of their cookie money on the project, and chose some of the items they wanted to buy.

Arlington tries to address transporation issues

SMOKEY POINT — Although Arlington Public Works Director Jim Kelly’s address to the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce June 9 began jovially, with him apologizing in advance because “I’m an engineer, so I love numbers and acronyms,” he was serious about addressing how the city’s transportation infrastructure affects the lives of residents and visitors alike.

The city handles 166 lane-miles of roadways, of which half is devoted to higher-traffic arterials and collectors for highways,

while the other half is taken up by residential streets, the latter of which handle an estimated 400 cars a day.

Arlington is also accountable for 79.5 miles of residential and commercial sidewalks, which must be made American Disabilities Actcompliant, as well a trail system for bikes and pedestrians.

Kelly thanked voters for approving the Transportation Benefit District in 2013, which has collected sales taxes to fund the preservation, repair and improvement of Arlington streets.

“We’re maintaining the roads we have and building new roads

to meet our projected growth and potential changes in mobility,” Kelly said.

“We take into account factors such as traffic volumes and thirteen years of accident histories.

Obviously, the higher the traffic volumes, the more likely you are to have accidents.”

Kelly reported that the Medallion Hotel, where he was speaking to the chamber, sees an average daily traffic of more than 21,000 cars, while Walmart on 172nd Street receives 23,000.

Olympic Avenue is lower, but still around 10,000.

The city also rates its intersec-

tions according to how much time cars spend waiting to pass through.

“The roads that are in the worst condition appear as red on our maps, while the ones that aren’t quite as bad are yellow,” Kelly said.

“You might think we’d prioritize the red roads for preservation and maintenance, but those roads are already too far gone. They need to be completely reconstructed.

That’s why we focus on the yellow roads.”

Among this year’s transportation-related projects are the already ongoing construction of a new parking lot for Haller Park,

two pavement overlays for West Arlington and another overlay for the Jensen neighborhood.

“We’re working with Washington State Department of Transportation to widen 172nd Street, and looking for funding for 173rd,” Kelly said.

“The plans for tomorrow start today. We’re updating the comprehensive plan to reflect the growth that’s likely within the next twenty years. This means coordinating with adjacent cities, as well as county and state agencies, because when roads lead out of one city and into another, we have to know what Marysville is doing.”

Arlington, Marysville both planning upcoming family carnivals

Both the Arlington and Marysville communities will soon be able to enjoy family carnivals.

The Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Smokey Point Carnival returns to the Arlington Airport grounds, at the corner of 172nd Street NE and 51st Avenue, from June 25-28.

Tickets are on sale for $15 at the chamber offices, at 104 N. Olympic Ave. in Arlington, and $19 at the gate.

The carnival will be open from 4-10 p.m. on Thursday, June 25; from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 26-27; and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 28.

Butler Amusements will be bringing 12 rides, including one more kiddie ride and one more

ride for older patrons than last year.

There will also be games and concessions.

The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce will be debuting its first carnival at Allen Creek Elementary, at 6505 60th Dr. NE in Marysville, from July 9-12.

Tickets are on sale for $15 at the chamber offices, in Suite C at 8825 34th Ave. NE in Tulalip;

at HomeStreet Bank and Safeway, at 1238 State Ave. in Marysville; and at Langabeer, McKernan & Burnett, at 4027 80th St. NE in Marysville.

The carnival will be open from 4-10 p.m. on Thursday, July 9; from 3-11 p.m. on Friday, July 10; from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 10; and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.

val, with games and concessions available as well.

MG grads happy, but will miss high school

EVERETT — As Marysville Getchell High School’s Class of 2015 filed out of Xfinity Arena with their families June 10, the one point many graduates seemed to agree on was that the next classes coming up shouldn’t graduate.

This sage advice was passed on

by Marcus Lloyd, who expects to head to North Carolina to play college basketball, and by Jarrett Grande and Fila Rosas, both of whom will be attending Everett Community College in their first steps toward careers in nursing.

Rosas was nearly in tears as she admitted she would miss the “ohana” — the Hawaiian term for extended family — she had built up at MG, while Grande confessed to feeling mixed emotions about his departure from high school.

“I’m really happy, but at the same

time, I’m not sure what I’m feeling,” said Grande, whose mother, Melany, recommended that future graduates “keep reaching for the stars.”

Al Bennett, Lloyd’s father, had some stern counsel of his own for high school parents.

“Stay on top of your kids,” Bennett said. “Make sure you know what they’re doing. And remember that saying ‘no’ can be a good thing.”

Whatever the approaches of the students and parents in attendance, they clearly worked for the 52 graduates from the Academy of Construction and Engineering (ACE), 65 from the Bio-Med Academy, 75 from the International School of Communications (ISC) and 73 from the School for the Entrepreneur (SFE).

ACE valedictorian Rami Moussi set the tone for the evening’s

remarks when he compared high school to skydiving without a parachute.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you get to spend it with some great people,” Moussi said.

Moussi asserted that the multitudes of casual acquaintances they’d started out with four years ago had been winnowed down to a smaller number of “quality friends.”

Bio-Med valedictorian Diana Orbeladze asserted that the lessons she and her peers learned about how to make mature decisions were at least as important as the subjects they studied.

“The very process of making choices allows us to eventually wake up one morning and realize we are adults, who are slightly more responsible than we used to be,” Orbeladze said. “The decisions we make prepare us for what the

future holds.”

ISC valedictorians Austin Ha and Emily Ekdahl joked that those who were disappointed that high school wasn’t like the movies had been comparing it to the wrong movie.

“It’s like Titanic,” Ekdahl said, “because it’s way too long, and all it does is make you cry in the end.”

They then offered the serious observation that they needed to prepare for a future that they hadn’t even conceived of.

“The truth is, the careers we will have one day are ones that don’t even exist yet,” Ekdahl said. “The scarier truth, the exciting truth, is that we are the ones who will be dreaming up those jobs.”

Ha compared himself and his classmates to toddlers learning to walk, saying, “It’s all about trying something, messing up, learning and adjusting. Why should this

change as we get older?”

SFE valedictorian Cristianna Campbell wrapped up the valedictorians’ remarks by leading them in a chorus of “Will the Class of 2015 Please Stand Up,” to the tune of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady.”

Ekdahl returned to the podium to add: “The purpose of the transition from childhood to high school was to train us to become refined, organized and respectful members of society. I now believe the purpose of childhood was not to shape who we became, but instead to teach us how to shape who we would become.”

“It’s because of how we learned to take risks and brave the unknown that we became more united as a class than any other,” student reflections speaker Rilee Louangphakdy said. “The SLCs were our islands, and we built the bridges to connect them.”

Students reach ocean

TULALIP – It seemed appropriate that Tulalip Tribal Chairman Mel Sheldon compared students to salmon at the Tulalip Heritage High School graduation June 11.

“Just like salmon, you’re having fun learning” at school in the early years.

Now, “you’ve gone downriver and you’ve reached the big ocean,” called graduation.

“No matter what tributary you take, we’re behind you,” he said. But the road “always leads back to Tulalip.”

The Tulalip Drummers and Singers performed the processional, and Cerissa

Gobin sang the National Anthem. Virginia Jones gave the invocation, then Principal Shelly Lacy welcomed everyone to the Hawk gym.

“Each one of you can reach your dreams,” Lacy told the 18 graduates.

Karen Fryberg spoke for the elders, and she also talked about dreams.

“Dreams come true, you just have to have the courage to pursue them,” she said. “We get so much from our tribe to help us reach those goals.

She gave each graduate a bag with five pieces of candy in it. Each graduate then gave the candy out to five people who helped

them achieve their graduation goal.

Tribal board member Theresa Sheldon said the graduates control their destiny through education.

“You control that. You did that. That’s your power. Do not stop there,” she said.

Trevor Fryberg was selected to speak for the students. His message was to not let things bring you down.

“There’s always something in the way,” he said.

“People want to bring you down, but don’t let them.”

He compared high school to a football game, saying you have to play all four quarters, just like you have to finish all four years of

“Sometimes you want to give up, but you have to stick it out,” he said.

“You have to keep playing your hardest to get the win.”

To his classmates he said,

“Good game. And we’ll have many games to come.”

Science teacher David Tanner talked about a number of outings he made with students this year. His favorite was going to the University of Washington

and going on the new turf at Husky Stadium.

“My heart’s full for you.

We belong,” he said.

Superintendent Becky Berg added, “We can’t wait to see where your life takes you.”

M-P speaker says high school went by really fast

MARYSVILLE — For many MarysvillePilchuck High School graduates, it just seemed like a blink of an eye.

Such was the case for Tanner Aguirre, who will continue his education at Everett Community College. He isn’t sure what he will study yet.

“It’s kind of crazy on how fast I graduated,” Aguirre said. “I thought it’d take longer.

Fellow graduate Alyssa Hunter had similar thoughts. She will also attend ECC, where she will begin studying special education.

“It’s really unreal, it just kind of hit me,” Miller said, who added that it only seemed like yesterday she was walking as a freshman.

After the valedictorian speeches and reflection speeches by Jazmyn Allen and Selena Tyler, Jason Kent played the piano and sang “Scientist” by Coldplay. Emma Kilgore sang “Last Goodbye” by Billy Boyd, the M-PHS Concert Choir performed, class president and Alonso’s class president speech, the diplomas were then certified by the Marysville School Board to be presented to the graduates.

These graduates worked a little harder to reach goal

MARYSVILLE — “I’ll let you in on a little secret,” Marysville school board president Tom Albright told the 39 students who graduated from Mountain View High School and the SOAR Program June 9. “Of all the Marysville schools’ graduations, this is our favorite, because of how much you all have worked to get here.”

One measure of the additional challenges those students have faced is that the students receiving their diplomas included members of the classes of 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Principal Dawn Bechtholdt noted that a former student, who took part in the Tulalip SHoPP this year, had returned to walk with his old classmates.

Three other students participated online through the Marysville Move-Up Virtual Education Program, and traveled to that night’s commencement from Tacoma, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley.

Even as Bechtholdt praised school staff and the students’ families for helping them, she also credited the students with refusing to give up.

“We have done all we can do with you graduates,” Bechtholdt said. “Now, it’s up to you to remember what

you have learned, and trust yourselves to reach toward the dreams and goals you have set for yourself.”

Bechtholdt encouraged the graduates to keep reaching toward those goals, to reset them as needed, to use all their resources and ask for help when needed.

Kira Bryant and Nicholas Anderson spoke for their fellow Mountain View graduates, while Najia Griffin served as the representative

of SOAR. Bryant admitted that she and her peers spent many of their school days counting down how many class periods they had left in the day, and how many semesters they had left before graduation.

“I will measure my time here in a much different way,” Bryant said. “I will measure it in all the friendships I’ve enjoyed these past four years. Some were pretty

casual, others were much closer, some were lost and some were gained, but I’ll remember each one fondly, as I’m sure you will.”

Anderson, a selfdescribed “super senior” who finished classes in January, recalled how he began high school with a bad attitude toward learning, which was magnified by his peers and the school he was originally attending.

After failing his first two years of high school, Anderson was persuaded to switch to Mountain View.

“It was one of the best decisions of my life,” Anderson said. “This school has built me up from someone who was pretty much at rock bottom looking, at the possibility of not graduating, and pushed me to do more things with my life than I thought possible.

“We are the students that other schools either didn’t care about, or just blatantly gave up on, but the staff at Mountain View never did,” he added. “Each of the graduates here tonight brought something with them that brightened up the school, to

make it the giant dysfunctional family that it is,” he laughed.

Griffin had no idea how much work she’d signed on for, when she switched to SOAR, but like Anderson, she deemed the extra effort more than worthwhile.

“Instead of going to football games and hanging out with friends every weekend, my time was spent on classwork,” Griffin said.

“We learned how to prioritize our time wisely. We all motivate each other every day to keep going and keep pushing on, no matter how tough things may get.”

Bechtholdt noted the number of graduates who are already shouldering adult responsibilities, including full-time jobs and families of their own, as well as the total amount of scholarships they’ve received, more than $28,000.

“This year’s graduates will go wherever they choose to go and will do whatever they want to do — just ask them,” Bechtholdt laughed.

“They are resilient and spirited and full of passion for who and what they love.”

Arlington hit with emotions

ARLINGTON — “It’s surreal,” Seigo Hall said, as he stood on the field of the John C. Larson Stadium after he and his classmates had turned their tassels and tossed their caps in the air.

“I know that I’ll never feel anything like this again, so I’m glad I have my friends and family by my side for this experience.”

Arlington High School bid farewell to 334 graduates from the Class of 2015 on June 5, and they all seemed to be seeking to make some sense out of what Hall deemed a “mindblowing” event.

Valedictorian Leah Youngquist admitted that she wasn’t close friends with all her classmates, nor did she even know all of them, but she asserted that they nonetheless shared a common bond that made them an eclectic family of sorts.

Moreover, while each family has at least one person who has a reputation for making mistakes, Youngquist warned her fellow graduates that they could all look forward to failing as adults.

“But we will also pick ourselves up and start again,” Youngquist said. “I’m not trying to create an entire graduating class of timid, quiet people.”

Youngquist encouraged

the class to embrace that life won’t always turn out as planned, but the risk of the unforeseen offers potential rewards as well.

“Join me in this next step of our lives, as we brace ourselves for the falls,” Youngquist said. “Just remember, we’ll have thicker skin when we get back up.”

Connor Ghirardo, who was both a valedictorian and a student representative on the school board, praised the families who helped the students. He also commended the students themselves, citing their athletic, academic and artistic accomplishments, from the seven sports teams that won WESCO League championships to the 39 seniors who placed in the top 10 percent of students statewide.

“And yes, Caroline, no one will forget the Robotics Club, who has gone above and beyond with their branding, accomplishments and outreach,” Ghirardo called out to classmate Caroline Vogl, who’s served on the NeoBots Team since her freshman year.

And while he freely acknowledged that he and his peers were looking forward to freedom from high school, Ghirardo asserted that they would still be responsible for continuing to learn throughout their

“Going forward, our sole responsibility is to figure out what our innate abilities are — because we all have them — to develop them with everything we have, and then use them,” said Ghirardo, who then quoted Mahatma Gandhi. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow, but learn as if you were to live forever.”

Fellow valedictorian Gareth Henderson reminisced about bowing to peer pressure, most notably by shelving the loud Hawaiian

shirts he favored in middle school, when he saw that no one else was wearing them in high school.

“I found myself in a situation where I felt like I needed to give up something that represented who I was in order to fit in, but over time, I became comfortable enough to start being myself again,” Henderson said. “Maybe our plans after today don’t follow the status quo of what others think we should be doing with our lives after high school, but as we go off into different directions in the world, don’t let the intimidation of being in a new place scare

you away from being yourself. Don’t let anyone take away your Hawaiian shirts.”

The final valedictorian, Emily Beaton, offered the shortest address.

“Everybody expects the valedictorians to say something wise or insightful, but the truth is, I’m in the exact same place as all of you,” Beaton said. “I may have gotten slightly better grades than some of you, but there’s nothing that I’m thinking that you’re not thinking yourselves.”

As such, she simply quoted President Reagan: “If we make up our mind on what we are going to make of

our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose. Somehow, we win out.”

Caroline Vogl knows where she’s going — to Western Washington University. Although she was no stranger to programming and building robots in high school, she did so much advocacy for her club in the community that she feels she can contribute more as a lobbyist for science, technology, engineering and math subjects to elected officials.

“Education, women’s rights and the environment are my big causes,” Vogl said.

TULALIP — Despite a power outage, valedictorian and graduating senior Chance Mair still delivered.

“I didn’t expect the power to go out,” Mair said. “But I was able to go up to the stage, adjust and annunciate.”

Mair is on the autistic spectrum but despite his disability, he has earned nine scholarships and will attend Washington State University.

“It’s a big honor to be valedictorian,” he said. “It shows how far I have come starting from a special ed class.”

He gave a speech during the Marysville School of Arts and Tech June 8.

Hans Asperger, the pediatrician that coined the term,

was quoted in Mair’s speech.

“It seems that for success in science or art, a dash of autism is essential,” he said.

“I’m not sure if those words

are true for everyone, but it certainly has helped me.”

Mair worked on his speech and practiced it for four weeks and was practic-

ing it ever since, he said.

At WSU he wants to study mathematics. He isn’t sure what exactly he wants to do for a career but it will probably involve statistics, he said.

“Now it’s just college, that’s what my next focus is,” he said. “Arts and Tech has prepared me both mentally and physically and in terms of learning.”

Mair graduated along with 54 other students from Arts and Tech, including

student-selected speaker Jesse Rutgers and salutatorian Steven Matias, who gave a speech on the importance of people contributing to change.

“We have the opportunity to create change,” Matias said. “No one is going to get up and do it for us. We are the change we seek.”

Student-selected faculty speaker Tarek Al-Rashid spoke followed by presentation of class 2015 by Principal Terri Kaltenbach, an acknowledgment of the graduates by superintendent Becky Berg and authorization of graduates by the Marysville School Board.

Graduate: High school compared to Red Robin

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood senior class speaker Alec Burbee compared his high school to a trip to Red Robin.

That would mean his graduation June 5, was the dessert.

“After going through multiple trays of fries and campfire sauces, you start to get full and uncomfortable from eating too much food,” he said. “That ladies and gentlemen is where we are now. You are to enjoy your dessert.”

Lakewood graduated approximately 150 seniors at the ceremoney.

After the attendees were greeted by the school band and the presentation of colors, the commencement began with the singing of the National Anthem by graduating senior by Cassidy Fry. Principal Michael Curl’s greeting and the valedictorian address by Alex Cooper followed.

Cooper talked about how time was measured during his time at Lakewood.

“We came here just four years

ago, and it only seems like yesterday that we were all here as awkward freshman running from sixth period so we wouldn’t miss the bus,” he said.

After a faculty speech and senior slide show, it was the presentation of diplomas, which was then followed by the turning of the tassels.

After that, the graduating class reunited with their parents in the campus’ courtyard, where tearful hugs and congratulatory statements were exchanged.

One of the graduating seniors was Bryce Stanton, who plans to attend Eastern Washington University.

“It’s amazing. It’s absolutely amazing,” he said. “All the stress is off, and now I’m ready for college.”

Another graduate was Kelsy Kosko, who plans to go to Everett Community College to study criminal justice.

“It’s unbelievable,” she said. “It took four years to get here and now it’s happening. I’m thankful for everyone that helped me get here.”

Local youth climb, row to better health

MARYSVILLE — Jasleen Kaur made it halfway up the rock-climbing wall at Allen Creek Elementary before she needed to come down.

The wall is an intimidating obstacle to Healthy Communities Challenge Day attendees of all ages, but for a 4-year-old like Jasleen, it’s especially impressive.

As fearsome as it might be, the wall is one of the features of the annual event that’s kept her and her family coming back for three years.

“The kids always have a blast,” said Michelle Kaur, Jasleen’s mom. “It’s also great that we get to meet other members of the community.”

June 6 saw the return of not only the rock climbing wall, but also Greg Erickson, athletic director for the Marysville School District, who again supervised elementary, middle and high school students as they completed the physical fitness challenge, running them through rounds of push-ups, sit-ups and step aerobics.

“We were just slammed with folks this morning,” Erickson said that Saturday.

“There’s always a lot of people here, but I think this event is becoming a community tradition. Once families find out the date, they mark it on their calendars. It’s got a variety of challenges for all ages.”

Just as Challenge Day marked its seventh year in Marysville, so too did Erickson recommend that families get into a regular routine of exercise, whether through aerobics, weight-

lifting, team sports or simply going for a walk every day.

Members of Rising Stars Gymnastics in Marysville celebrated their group’s 20th year in operation by hauling out their practice mats to demonstrate their techniques for staying fit, as well as showing off their talents.

Owner and coach Dawn Mosteller noted that Rising Stars trains students in not only artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, but also wrestling.

“We’ve been doing wrestling for three years, and picked up our first state championship last year,” Mosteller said.

Mosteller appreciates the opportunity that Challenge Days afford her students to bond outside the gym. She also touted the benefits of gymnastics, since it helps train your muscles for most other sports as well.

Marysville-based Kung Fu 4 Kids teacher Carlton Doup said the event drew “more energy, more crowds and more excitement.”

Doup believes that returning attendees drove this surge.

“If you do something long enough, it becomes a staple of your life,” Doup said. “These people wanted this event to come back.

Every other kid who’s practiced breaking boards with us this time has told us that they did it before, during one of the previous Healthy Communities Challenge Days.”

Marysville auto site cleans up contamination, can come off list MARYSVILLE – The Department of Ecology proposes to remove a Marysville property from a list of contaminated sites because it has been shown to meet cleanup standards.

Soil at the site known as Ed’s Transmission Exchange, 10226 State Ave., contained oil and lead con-

tamination from historic operations. The property owner conducted cleanup in 2013, by removing about 181 tons of contaminated soil, under Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program. The hazardous substances cleaned up in the soil at the site were lead, petroleum hydrocarbons oil

range and other metals.

The site is located within property that has been utilized for an automotive repair and maintenance facility since 1969, and is currently used for that purpose. The facility came to Ecology’s attention in 1992 through reported mismanagement of waste oil.

Preliminary samples taken by the Snohomish Health

Department in 1999 confirmed the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons and metals in soil above cleanup levels on the property. More extensive sampling was accomplished by the property owner during 2012. Lead was consistently detected in the soil and established as the primary contaminant of concern.

There were also some detec-

tions of petroleum hydrocarbons oil range and other metals. Ground water was not impacted.

Ecology added the property to the Hazardous Sites List in 2000. It was ranked “3” under the Washington Ranking Method with 1 high risk and 5 low risk.

This ranking estimates the potential threat to human health and the environment

relative to other sites in Washington State.

Based on the dirt-removal work, Ecology has determined that the property no longer poses a threat to human health or the environment and is ready for removal from the department’s Hazardous Sites List.

Before doing so, Ecology invites public comment until July 20.

Gerwick was pumping gas at the Smokey Point Safeway around 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, when she spotted a line of unidentified flying objects.

“As I turned north, to walk behind my car, I saw several orange lights jump up into the sky very quickly,” Gerwick said. “Each one popped up within a second or less after the one before it.”
