Kingstree Studios, Tacoma Historical Society earn historic preservation awards Posted online Mon., June 1 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission presented this year's awards for outstanding achievements in historic preservation during a public ceremony on Sun., May 31, at Foss Waterway Seaport. This year's recipients are Joan Waldrop and Steve Logan (Residential Renovation Award); Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Amtrak Station Relocation / Freighthouse Square (Preservation Planning Award); City of Tacoma Historic Preservation Officer Reuben McKnight (Preservation Planning, Policy, or Initiative Award); Historic Tacoma / Hoyt Elementary School (Landmark Nomination to be Recognized Award); Dr. Caroline T. Swope / Kingstree Studios (Leadership in Preservation Award); Historic Tacoma Board President Gary Knudson (Leadership in Preservation Award); and the Tacoma Historical Society (Organization in Preservation Award). The awards ceremony capped a series of events in May that coincided with national historic preservation month. Pierce County Judge Larkin to retire July 31 Posted online Mon., June 1 Pierce County officials announced Monday Superior Court Judge Thomas P. Larkin will retire on July 31. According to information posted on Pierce County's Web site, Larkin graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School in 1966, Gonzaga University in 1970, and Gonzaga Law School in 1973. He practiced law in Pierce County from 1973 to 1986, representing clients at the trial and appellate court levels, and trying both civil and criminal cases in the state and federal courts. In 1986, he was elected to Pierce County District Court, where he served as a judge until his election to Pierce County Superior Court in 1996. Larkin was Pierce County Superior Court Presiding Judge in 2007 and 2008, and currently serves as the Presiding Judge of the Pierce County Juvenile Court at Remann Hall. Tee up in June for free downtown Tacoma mini-golf Posted online Tues., June 2 The U.S Open at Chambers Bay is right around the corner and Tacoma is ready to welcome it with Pop-Up Art Putt! — a free public mini-golf course in downtown Tacoma. The course includes 10 holes designed by Tacoma artists. Each hole is built around a theme, ranging from the comic and playful to those showcasing Tacoma's unique landmarks. The mini-golf course will span the Prairie Line Trail along Hood Street between South 15th Street, South 17th Street, Tollefson Plaza, and Tacoma

Art Museum's Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Plaza. A kick-off party will be held on Thurs., June 18, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Visitors can check out clubs and balls at Tacoma Art Museum.
