Longtime schools’ administrative assistant retires By Ron Newberry Staff Reporter

Chances are, the notion of retirement won’t sink in with Janet Wodjenski for quite some time. After spending 25 years as a secretary and administrative assistant in the Coupeville School District, following four years on the school board, she’s trying to figure out what she’ll do with all this free time on her hands. For the short term, that is. “I’m giving myself four months before I volunteer for anything,” Wodjenski said. Starting Friday when she closes the door of the school district office, Wodjenski will catch her breath and unwind, retreating to the home she and her husband had built in Coupeville in 1979, and join him in retirement to start a new chapter in their lives. “He’s trying to coach me what it’ll be like,” Janet said of Don, who retired last spring after 20 years as an art teacher at South Whidbey High School. If it’s going to feel foreign to Wodjen-

ski, it will only pale in comparison to the only natural feelings of co-workers who’ve come to depend on her attention to detail, organization and vast knowledge base of the district’s policies and procedures that comes with nearly three decades of careful study and input. “She’s the finest assistant I’ve ever worked with,” said Superintendent Jim Shank. “She’s incredibly valuable to us. She’s phenomenal. “When someone goes out after 25 years, they’re taking a ton of institutional knowledge with them. We’ll really miss that.” The feeling is mutual for Wodjenski, a self-described “word nerd” who enjoyed the people and the duties she performed. With her main priority to provide support for the superintendent and the school board, she found herself wearing many different hats in the small school district. Over the years, she’s prepared countless reports, scheduled meetings and events, updated the website, created the newsletter and updated the school district’s manual on policies and procedures in more common

language. She’s served as the school district’s communications officer and led community education efforts. “I’ve never had a dull day in this job,” Wodjenski said. In her 25 years, she served under nine superintendents, including five within a year’s span at the time Shank arrived in 2013. “Every superintendent brought something unique to the district,” Wodjenski said. “I have enjoyed working with each person.” Wodjenski is one of five Coupeville

It started with two dogs. But the pack of stuffed canines that frequent the corner of Center and Fourth Street in Coupeville has swelled to nine over the last two years. Popular with locals, the display adds a bit of whimsey to Coupeville’s small-town feel. “If I don’t put them out everyone goes, ‘Where’s your dogs?’” said Randy Thiesfeld, who puts them out nearly every morning and takes them in every night. “They don’t ask how I’m doing. Everybody loves them.” Thiesfeld was raised in Coupeville and points to a nearby house when he describes the house he was born in. Having worked for 30 years as a concrete mason across the country, Thiesfeld returned to Coupeville about four years ago when his health took a turn for the worse. Despite a couple of health scares, Thiesfeld said it’s obviously not his time to go. “I’m still here,” Thiesfeld said. “Raising hell.” Thiesfeld’s sister, Loann Gulick, who also lives in Coupeville, said she always hears people ask about the dogs. “When they walk their dogs, (the dogs) start barking,” Gulick said. “Everybody loves the dogs.”

of its mother. “We believe people have good intentions but they’re doing more harm than good,” Barnes said. Downes said that humans like to personify animals and assume that a fawn that appears to be alone is in danger. This is not the case, Downes said. The mother deer purposefully put the fawn in a place that is safe. Fawns put off almost no scent, Downes said, and are well camou-

flaged. “It allows the mom to go off and do her thing without putting the baby in jeopardy,” Downes said. The issue is similar to when seal pups are found on the beach and people believe they are abandoned. In that same vein, Downes said the mother has placed its young there so she can feed and the baby can rest. “Whether we’re talking a seal or a fawn, more often than not the little ones are okay,” Downes said.

Washington anglers can fish for free June 6-7 Each year, thousands of Washingtonians go fishing – legally – without a license. Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for June 6-7. During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington state. Also, no vehicle access pass or Discover Pass will be required during Free Fishing Weekend to park at any of the nearly 700 water-access sites maintained by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers will not need a Two Pole Endorsement

to fish with two poles on selected waters where two pole fishing is permitted. Anglers will also not need a Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement, otherwise required to fish for salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River and its tributaries. Anglers have been catching daily limits of trout at lakes for the past month, and many rivers will open to trout fishing June 6 throughout the state. While no licenses are required on Free Fishing Weekend, other rules such as size limits, bag limits and

The myth of no maintenance landscaping If anyone tries to sell you on a landscape design that’s touted as no-maintenance, tell them you’ll swap some oceanfront property in Nebraska for their plans. Who knows, with climate change they may come out ahead. toni grove There are many decisions sowin ’n’ the trowel you can make during the planning phase of your garden that might help ensure you’ll have less work to do over the long run. But don’t expect a garden that will never need a bit of tweaking or upkeep over time. Nature doesn’t work that way. Now, I’m assuming right here that you do want plants in your landscape. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. Or maybe you’re just really, really bored. In that case, go to the library and find something more erudite and scintillating. Anyway, if you don’t want plants, then go ahead and replace your flower beds with rocks and gravel. I’ve seen more than one home on the island where there’s been nary a blade of grass or vegetation to be seen. Rest assured these people may think they’ve stumbled upon the most extreme low-maintenance landscaping there is, but instead of taking care of living plants, they’re taking care of rocks and gravel. Even if they laid steel plates they purloined from the nearest road crew and laid them end to end under those rocks, they’d still have the might of Mother Nature working against them. Without the regular use of weed killers or pre-emergents that prevent seeds from germinating, those gravel driveways and rocky reaches will eventually becomes seas of green. All it takes is a little water and the barest bit of sand or soil blown in to sift down into the cracks and your rock bed becomes a Chia Pet. But you want plants not rocks. You just don’t want to be slaves to your landscaping. Just remember that the habitat you create for the plants you love is also the perfect habitat for many, many unwanted plants. You’ve probably already figured out you’ll have to do some weeding, but how to do less of it, as well as watering, pruning, and generally cutting back? Your first step in going low-maintenance is to find plants that need less water once established. That will cut down on the time you spend hauling around a hose and setting up the sprinkler. Forgo having a lawn and you can save even more water, plus the expensive of installing a sprinkler system won’t even cross your mind. Consider plants that are sterile hybrids or produce few seeds. To this end, avoid things like columbine, chives or bluebells. And find plants that stay in clumps and don’t send runners far and wide. Stonecrop is a good one, but say goodbye to many kinds of mints and lysimachia. Plant slow growing trees and shrubs that won’t need constant pruning and plants that require a single cutting back at the end of the season, no shaping that requires brain cells to perform. I’m thinking roses and lavenders would be a big no. Another way to go low-maintenance is to hire a gardener. But it might be cheaper to marry a gardener or give birth to one. That too can take come planning!

Driving a motorcycle doesn’t make you bad Editor, With the recent bad publicity regarding motorcycle gangs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Riders would like to share some good news. While we are not a club or a group, we are the VFW Riders, Chapter 1, Washington state. We proudly wear a Maltese Cross and Veterans of Foreign Wars name, and our motives are very basic. We are here to help veterans. Most of the rides we make are for charity causes, veterans and civilians alike. In the past year and a half, we earned and donated $2,000 to the Opportunity Council alone for use by Whidbey veterans only. Additionally, we donated hundreds of dollars in goods — laundry soap, clothing, toiletries, etc. — for the Opportunity Council to use for vets, to assist them in their quest for employment, housing and other needs as the agency sees fit. Have you passed by a cemetery lately and seen a line of riders standing tall with American flags? That’s us. And a group of other riders called the Patriot Guard helps veterans’ families in their time of need. If requested, we’ll escort the family members to the ceremonies. We ride to fight cancer,

promote Ryan’s House, Sea-Tac USO, Make-A-Wish Foundation and much more. Our reputation for helping has led to requests for us to participate in far more parades and fundraisers than we could possibly attend. We led the annual Autumn Leaf Festival in Leavenworth, participated in the Auburn Veterans Day Parade, the largest Veterans Parade on the West Coast, and, of course, parades in Oak Harbor and Coupeville. The Riders participated in the Coupeville Water Festival by picking up the trash. We had four wheels there. Earlier this year, the Riders were instrumental in arranging and presenting the Order of St. Barbara Award to a 94-year-old veteran for his service to the artillery community during World War II. It may not seem like much, but it was an interstate effort originating in Texas and culminating with 20-plus bikers in full garb and an Army staff sergeant in full military dress uniform pulling into a residence in a quiet Anacortes neighborhood. It was a touching and fulfilling event. Our Riders are responsible for the majority of the work on the soon-tobe dedicated Washington-state-recognized Veterans Memorial at our Post on Goldie Road. In closing, don’t think that just because someone is riding a motorcycle and wearing a vest with patches, that your life is in danger or that they must be up to no good. There’s a lot of good riders out there. We’re proud to be some of them.

Adaline Clara Osborne (BurchardWood) April 3, 1926May 19, 2015

Our 89-year-old angel went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 19, 2015, surrounded by family at Skagit Valley Hospital after a fall at home. She was born April 3, 1926, in Bowmont, Idaho, to Oscar and Edna Wood. She lived through the depression with her mother and father and four siblings in Tenino, Wash. After the depression, her family moved to Darrington, Wash., where she graduated high school. She moved to Monroe, Wash., after marrying Robert T. Burchard in Marysville, Wash. on April 3, 1947. They raised their four boys and lived there until they retired and relocated to Coupeville. After the death of her first husband in 1992, she married a wonderful man named Tillmon Osborne on Sept. 18, 2004, in Stanwood, Wash., where they resided until she passed. Adaline loved spending time with all of her family. She enjoyed playing dominos, rummikub and cards. She was an amazing cook, and she loved doing crafts with her grandchildren. Her favorite times were sitting around with family and friends telling stories and laughing. Her laughter, smile and the sparkle in her eyes are what will be missed the most. She was a beloved wife, mother and great-greatgrandmother. She is survived by her husband, Tillmon Osborne; her four sons and their wives; Brad (Bev), Phil (Michele), Bruce (Deborah) and Gary (Suzy) Burchard; as well as Tillmon’s children: Valeta and Willard King, Kevin

Osborne, Doyle and Velda Osborne and Suzanne Osborne. She is also leaving behind 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Hoglund, brother Harvey Wood and their families, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Though, she always said with a smile, “I don’t have any friends…everyone is family.” Adaline was a woman of small stature with a heart as big as the world. We will be honoring her amazing life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at the New View Church 8028 272nd St. NW, Stanwood, WA 98292. If you knew her, please come. He served in the Air Force during WWII and the Korean War. After that he worked for the federal government for 30 years, negotiating contracts between the Navy and Boeing for aircraft. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, enjoyed building and carving. He is survived by his daughters, Katlaina Rayne (Jerome Rosen) and Susan Gardner (Fred); two grandchildren, Christine Nordstrom (Jeff) and Russell Luzetski (Michele); and two great grandchildren, Anna and Peter Nordstrom, as well as his long time companion, Elsa Kolve. Howard E. Little, born in Seattle, Wash., on Nov. 18, 1920, passed away peacefully at his home in Edmonds, Wash., on March 3, 2015. Howard was the son

on Bainbridge Island, Riel moved to Whidbey Island in 1986. Living a simple life became her priority. She loved nature,gardening, walking and the arts. She was an accomplished potter - creator of “Earthen Vessels.” Participating in island community activities and projects were extremely important, as was working for peace and justice. Riel was a generous, thoughtful, perceptive and loyal friend. She truly walked her talk. Riel had lived in many places, lived many lives in her 89 years, but the years she spent on her property in Coupeville were the most beloved. She is sur vived by a large and loving family. She is also missed by many Whidbey Island friends, neighbors and fellow activists. There will be a memorial service on Whidbey Island this summer. Curtin closes successful Coupeville athletic career By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

Perhaps the best illustration to define Coupeville High School senior Aaron Curtin as a person and athlete came four years ago. Curtin was one of several freshman playing varsity basketball. A loose ball was scooting out of bounds near the baseline in front of the Wolves’ bench. Curtin raced full speed and dove headlong to recover the ball, one he had little chance to save, bouncing his body off the floor and then into the brick wall at the end of the Coupeville gymnasium. That hustle play in itself gives a glimpse of Curtin’s nature. The situation adds another. It was deep in the season and deep in the game, another 30-point loss for the winless Wolves. With only minutes left in the contest, one possession wasn’t going to change Coupeville’s fate that evening. That didn’t matter to Curtin. “I never give up,” he said. Curtin wraps up his solid Coupeville athletic career when he plays in the state tennis tournament Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30, at the Yakima Tennis Club. While competing for the Wolves, Curtin, who plays tennis, basketball and baseball, earned 11 varsity letters in his 11 seasons. Worn down by the toll of playing year-round, Curtin sat out his junior basketball season.

That was a mistake, he admits. “I came to regret that decision when I went to the first game,” he said. “The guys that were playing next to me, that is what made me come back.” Curtin attributes his success to “good coaching” and the support of his family (parents Ed and Judi and brothers Adam and Travis). He said his coaches, particularly tennis coach Ken Stange and baseball coach Willie Smith, helped build his confidence and improve his leadership skills. “Stange is always building my self-esteem,” he said. “He and coach Smith would tell you what you did wrong, and not in a demeaming way. The way they coached is the way I tried to lead.” His family, he said, helped him “get past the bad days.” A Coupeville native, Curtin grew up wanting to play for the Wolves. “I used to lean against that wall (pointing to the school building that borders to tennis courts) and watch my brothers play,” he said. Now that his CHS career is about over, he hopes he left a positive impression on teammates he encountered along the way. “I want to be remembered for not only being a good athlete, but a good person, a nice guy, and being able to help others. “I tried to work my butt off as much as I could; I wanted the

Senior Aaron Curtin plays with intensity, regardless of the sport. younger kids to look up to me.” Smith said Curtin accomplished that goal. “He really grew into one of the better leaders I’ve had over my years,” Smith said. “He is a tireless worker who really pushes himself and expects a lot out of himself.

“He carries a ton of respect for the game, his teammates and his opponents. He makes kids around him better just by watching how hard he works and his focus during games and practices. I don’t think I ever saw him take a day off during this year.

“He was definitely the heart and soul of our team this year. If our younger players want to get better and improve, as both players and as a person, they should have watched Aaron very closely.” Stange said Curtin “speaks softly but carries a big stick.” “Despite that calm, the intensity is there; one can see it in his eyes,” he said. Stange also found Curtin to be “more wise and mature than other kids his age,” noting as a freshman, the upperclassmen accepted him. “As an elder, the younger players respect and admire him,” Stange said. “He’s kind and sensitive, and he’s always found time to work with the younger players. “He takes his academics as seriously as he does his athletics. I guess I’d call him extremely well-rounded.” Curtin will attend Central Washington University next year and tryout for the baseball team. He also hopes to be part of the school’s Air Force ROTC program. “I want to fly,” he said. “My Dad would bring me into the flight simulators at the base. I always enjoyed that.” Stange expects Curtin to succeed in whatever field he chooses. “He’s going to have a successful life,” Stange said. Indeed. Curtin will not allow any wall to stand in his way.

She went on to serve 25 years as a school district secretary and administrative assistant. Pictured with her in the article is her daughter Emily, who is now 36 and lives in Olympia.

Four are teaachers: Sheila O’Rourke, who’s been both a teacher and counselor at the elementary school; Liz Sherman, who’s taught at both the elementary and middle school; Barbara Nichols, a special education teacher at the elementary school; and Tom Eller, who is finishing 25 years at the high school and middle school. Wodjenski has spent recent weeks working closely

with Julie Hunt, calling her a “very capable” replacement, sentiments shared by Shank. Hunt said the job can still feel overwhelming at times but is thankful she’s been able to spend time learning from Wodjenski. Wodjenski said she plans to keep her phone handy should questions arise. “Julie has my phone number,” she said. “And actually I don’t mind taking their calls. I plan to stay in touch with a number of people in the district. I really have enjoyed working here.”

But then he started to get stuffed animals from both friends and strangers, who would drop them in his yard. Thiesfeld said he’s open to other donations. “I guess I’m the stuffedanimal WAIF guy,” said

Thiesfeld, referring to the Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation which helps stray dogs and cats find homes. His pets, each with their own unique personality, are better than the real thing, Thiesfeld said. “It don’t cost me a thing to feed them, you don’t have to clean up dog poop,” Thiesfield said.
