Rieger, School Board part ways over ‘differing viewpoints’ Both sides remain silent on specifics of split BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
A week later the community still doesn’t know what philosophical differences separated former Superintendent Merri Rieger from the Renton School Board and it appears the community may never learn the answers.
After repeatedly asking board members and the district to give further details, Randy Matheson, district spokesperson, had this to say via email: “As part of the amicable Merri Rieger decision for Dr. Rieger to resign, the Board and Dr. Rieger entered into an agreement to not discuss the matter.” Meanwhile, the Renton Reporter website and Facebook page were lit up with posts
demanding more transparency from the district in this latest development. School Board President Pam Teal stated that there were “differing viewpoints” between the two in a district release on May 13, the day the board accepted Rieger’s resignation. Rieger is to receive 18 months of her salary as settlement, according to Matheson. A typical settlement is about two years or [ more RIEGER page 15 ]

Secretary of State John Kerry made a visit to Renton on Tuesday and defended the Trans Pacific Partnership treaty as good for Washington and the country. With the Boeing 737 production facility as a backdrop, Kerry delivered a 50-minute defense of President Obama’s Pacific Rim trade package that has come under fire from opponents both outside and within the President’s own party. “The reasons why it is important are straight-

forward and sensible,” Kerry said, urging Congress to put the legislation on the “fast track.” “We’ve got to be engaged. We’ve got to lead,” he said. “Globalization has no reverse gear.” The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim nations that, according to Kerry, constitute 40 percent of the world’s economy. Kerry called the TPP “historical” and a “21st Century Agreement,” concluding “This is not your grandparent’s trade agreement.” [ more KERRY page 8 ]
