All City Council incumbents will be challenged in November general election

Eleven Islanders have thrown their names in for consideration

by Mercer Island voters in the November general election for City Council, according to King County Elections.

This fall, there are five open seats, and all races are contested.

Position No. 1: Incumbent Jane Meyer Brahm will run against

Dave Wisenteiner. Brahm was appointed in January 2011 and ran unopposed later that year.

Position No. 3: Newcomers Wendy Weiker and Salim Nice will face off for the open position currently held by Mike Cero, who said he will not run again in the fall. Cero ran unopposed in the last election.

Position No. 4: The position recently vacated by Joel Wachs will be open as a two-year unexpired term. Carl Silverberg and Jeff Sanderson have filed for that seat. The current Council plans to appoint someone else to fill the position until November.

Position No. 5: Bruce Bassett, incumbent and current mayor,

The challenges with completing Fire Station 92 have moved past budget concerns and slow construction progress and the project, now six months behind schedule, may be delayed again.

“The city rejected the Fire Station roof due to several deficiencies, including sharp debris trapped under the membrane,” said Ross Freeman, communications and sustainability manager.

The City Council was notified in October that there may be a problem with the roof, after water was observed dripping on the floor after a storm.

Coval roof preserved to use in new arts center The 50,000 pound roof of the Coval pool house has been saved for reuse in the Mercer Island Center for the Arts (MICA). "This remarkable piece of art and craft has been saved through the efforts of Wes Giesbrecht, developer of the property,” MICA President John Gordon Hill said. The roof was built of specially-milled African bubinga wood in the Japanese truss style known as Shinzuka.

Contractors researched the engineering and construction of the roof and carpenters carefully removed the walls and windows of the pool house. The roof was cut free and supported on steel I-beams. It was jacked up, placed on sliders and slowly moved out from the structure, then gradually lowered to ground level by jacking and removing cribbing. Wheels were attached, and the 70-foot by 28-foot structure was moved to a position to be weatherproofed.

MICA is scheduled for opening in early 2018.

The applicant (Tom’s Stuff) had applied to open a retail store at a location in Town Center under the provisions of Initiative 502, which passed by popular vote in November 2012 and allows the sale of recreational marijuana in Washington.

Mercer Island qualified for one store based on population, but the city determined that there is no retail location that would meet the 1,000-foot rule.

The rule states that any retail location must be sited at least 1,000 feet away from places where children congregate, including parks, playgrounds, schools, daycares, community centers, libraries, etc.

WSLCB informing it that Tom’s Stuff, the single lottery winner awarded a bid for a recreational marijuana storefront on the Island, didn't comply with state law, as the proposed location was well within 1,000 feet of Aubrey Davis Park.

The WSLCB made a final decision to deny the license a few weeks ago.

“Based on the paper trail, we believe that the WSLCB made an error in its initial approval of the license,” said City Manager Noel Treat. “As far as we can tell, the electronic mapping data it used was out of date, and did not depict the location of widely-recognized designated park land adjacent to our Town Center area.”

The Council had two options: to tear off the roof and start again, or complete the roofing process and see where the project stood after the rainy season. Patching “isn’t a bad thing,” DeDominicus said, but water under the roof membrane could compromise the structure and its warranty.

The city’s outside roofing consultant recently recommended that a new membrane be installed over the entire roof surface, instead of patching areas of trapped debris.

The contractor, which is Corp Inc., a construction company based out of Salem, Ore., was notified that because it had not provided a suitable corrective action plan to repair or replace the nonconforming work, the city intends to proceed with corrections at the contractor’s expense.

Corp Inc.’s $3.5 million bid — the lowest of 14 presented — was awarded by the Council in November 2013.

“As the issue involves the roof covering and not the structure, I am hoping it can be done while the firefighters are using the station,” Deputy Mayor Dan Grausz wrote in an

email update to Islanders, noting that it’s likely that both the roof issue and the city’s claim for delay damages will result in litigation with the contractor.

The Fire Chief anticipates moving in at the end of May, Freeman said.

The formal opening date and station dedication is set for Saturday, July 18.

Who will really decide on Town Center design Why is the Town Center Liaison Group (TCLG) pursuing an agenda for the Town Center that will result in a cookie cutter transit oriented development (TOD) without character or individuality?

The TCLG through its transit oriented development consultant, Seth Harry, is pushing for a code which mandates not only building height but building shape and choice of building materials.

The TCLG also plans to require retail on all ground level buildings in the Town Center and dictate which type of retail a property owner must provide, in addition to the lease rate and terms, regardless of market demand.

A quick comparison of the consultant’s January 2015 drawings (before the stakeholder group was formed) to the present May 2015 drawings reveals little if any change. It gives the impression that the public outreach campaign was done only to fulfill legal requirements rather than to truly gather and implement community ideas. Our TCLG “leaders” are facilitating the stakeholder group to a predetermined result where property owners and the community cede control of private property to the City.

Bus intercept on MI — unneeded, expensive At the last City Council meeting, there was talk about “mobility mitigation.” We are still waiting for the mitigation for the loss of the HOV lanes. Mitigation is like selling your soul to the devil. Is it worth it? The City Council needs to push for South Bellevue, and not mitigation.

Rather than spending the money here, it would be better to look for alternatives that would make more sense for Sound Transit and Metro. Expanding the proposed Parking and Bus Terminal in South Bellevue does that and does not disrupt a City Center.

Sound Transit claims that there will be no more buses on the Island than currently come here.

They do not say that during peak hours there will be a bus every 2.5 minutes. They want to provide space for up to 14 buses to park

on the Island with three bus lanes on 80th Avenue S.E. over I-90.

The City’s traffic study already identifies that area as a problem site even before the bus terminal.

They claim that the terminal is needed to allow the buses from the eastside (Issaquah and North Bend) to “intercept” with light rail.

They say that it is a “straight shot.” and “They do not have to cross lanes from the HOV lane.” But the fact is that, it would be faster, a shorter distance and avoid the I-90 back-up at the East Channel bridge, if the buses went to South Bellevue. The buses cross two or three lanes to get to the HOV lanes when they get onto I-90, why can’t they when getting off I-90?

Why is Sound Transit pushing so hard on this issue?

They need to widen Bellevue Way for light rail, so why not add a less than half mile lane for the buses at the same time.

With the completion of the light rail through Bellevue the need for buses using the South Bellevue Terminal will be greatly reduced.

We need hard answer from Sound Transit and less sophistry.

Let the City Council know your opinion, send a letter, attend a meeting. If the buses do not come here, there is a possibility more people will park in South Bellevue to avoid the I-90 back-up and allow more Island residents to have access to the Mercer Island Park and Ride.

Just say no to the bus terminal.

Teachers walk out to send message to Legislature

CANDIDATES | FROM 1 Bertlin defeated incumbent El Jahncke in 2011 in the only contested race that year. There was also only one contested race in 2009, when Ira Appelman ran against incumbent Dan Grausz for Position No. 2. There were two contested and two unopposed races in the election before that, in 2007.

Grausz was re-elected in 2013, and Benson Wong won the race for open Position No. 6. Tana Senn ran unopposed for Position No. 4.

The last time all open seats for the Mercer Island City Council were contested was in 2005.

City Council members serve four year terms, with even and odd numbered positions alternating for election every two years.

There are no term limits.

Candidates looking to fundraise must file with the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC). So far, Weiker and Bassett have filed. Weiker has raised $500, and Bassett has raised $1,146.91 and spent $34.49.

“They’re looking at property tax monies for certain communities like Mercer Island. But we wouldn’t get those monies, they’d be redistributed to other districts,” Lindquist said.

“We’d be paying more, and it actually looks like we’d be getting less for what we use for schools. It could be really dramatic for how it would negatively impact our school district. It’s pretty scary.”

High school science teacher Patricia Weston said the demands imposed through the uses of state funding and state testing have grown increasingly difficult on both teachers and students.

“Teaching science is a lot easier to teach with a class size of 12-16 than 22-34.

It’s harder to engineer that type of attention if you have struggling students. If you have large class sizes, it’s harder on both the teachers and the students,” Weston said.

In their letter, MIEA leaders said that the walkout comes after teachers have “tried everything else,” including meeting with legislators, holding a rally in Olympia in April, and engaging in other lobbying efforts to no avail.

With Mercer Island joining the growing list of school districts voting for teacher walkouts, the MIEA hopes their message will be heard in Olympia.

PROWLING: Another Aviara resident, a 39-year-old man, reported that his locked pickup truck was prowled.

Numerous tools were taken from his toolbox and possibly used to steal locked bicycles from the Aviara garage. One bicycle lock, not belonging to the prowl victim, was found in a cloth tool bag in the truck bed.

Joyce Johnson Palmer died unexpectedly on May 9, 2015.

Joyce was a sweet, loving, thoughtful, faithful, generous, wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Joyce was born on February 27, 1937 in Jacksonville, Florida. She grew up with two sisters and a brother in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, Florida, where they helped in their family-own restaurant and local institution, The Sandbar. Joyce graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville and remained an avid Gator fan.

While teaching in France, Joyce met the man who would be her husband of 52 years, Captain Roy Palmer, an U.S. Air Force pilot. Joyce and Roy married soon after and returned to the United States where they were stationed at bases across the country and raised two children, Jay and Kara. She also volunteered in many capacities, including as a hospice caregiver.

When Roy became a Boeing test pilot, they moved to the Pacific Northwest and built their home of 30 years on Mercer Island.

Joyce was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island and a kind friend to many parishioners.

She loved plants and flowers and was a member of a Washington Park Arboretum group. She also met with the “Soulmates” walking group every Wednesday, rain or shine, and went on hikes with the “Trailmates” group.

She took special joy in spending time with her two grandchildren, Kaley and Silas, who have learned how to be caring and thoughtful from their “Nana.” Joyce was an exceptional woman who touched the lives of so many people.

Our hearts ache from losing her, and at the same time, will always be filled by our memories of her love and grace. In addition to Roy, Jay, Kara, Kaley and Silas, she is survived by her sisters, Shirley and Janine, and her brother, Pierce. Donations may be made in Joyce’s loving memory to Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island.

Diane Elizabeth (Emanuels) Johnson February 9, 1960 – May 12, 2015 Diane was born in Olympia,WA, the middle of three children of Don and Barbara Emanuels.

She was raised in Bellevue, WA and graduated at the top of her class from Bellevue High School in 1978.

She began many lifelong friendships and hobbies while in high school, becoming an accomplished seamstress and expert classical and Spanish flamenco guitarist and instructor.

Diane attended Northwestern University, but later transferred to and received a BA in Business Administration, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington in 1985.

She supported herself throughout high school and college working numerous jobs. In the spring of 1982, Diane traveled to Aix-en-Provence, France, where she developed a lifelong love of the French language and culture, while spending six months studying at a French university and traveling all over Europe. After returning to UW, she began working as an intern at IBM where, upon graduation, she was hired as a marketing representative, first in IBM’s Olympia, WA branch and later in Seattle, where she bought her first home. She later worked for Baxter Healthcare and Microsoft, before “retiring” to raise a family full time.

On October 6, 1990, Diane married Kirk Alan Johnson, a Bellevue High School classmate with whom she reconnected while they were both young professionals. They began their married life in Kirkland, WA before buying a home in Bellevue. They moved to Mercer Island, WA in 1996 where she lived the remainder of her life while raising her growing family. Diane and Kirk eventually had four wonderful children together, and Diane became a prolific and revered volunteer in her kids’ schools and activities. She served as PTA President at both West Mercer Elementary and Mercer Island High School, in addition to serving on numerous committees. Her commitment to her children and her community was legendary and highly respected and appreciated by all who knew her and the many others who benefited from her generous service. In spite of her busy family and community life, she found time to cultivate her many friendships and hobbies including beading, cooking, rowing and entertaining and even became a Master Gardner. Diane loved animals and even during her illness she continued as a frequent foster parent to numerous animals and stray and rescued cats.

Diane, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in April of 2014 and battled valiantly until the end, inspiring all who knew her with her determination, honesty and humor in the face of adversity. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Renato Martins, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the University of Washington Medical Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital for the compassionate and professional care she received.

Diane is survived by her husband of nearly 25 years, Kirk Johnson, and their four children, Cole (23), Blake (21), Isabelle (16) and Luke (14); her sister Carol (John) Caputo of Mercer Island, WA and their children Cathy, Dan and Lauren Caputo; brother Brian (Anne) Emanuels, also of Mercer Island, and their children Ben, Alex, Davidson and Griffin Emanuels; her in-laws Dick and Marol Johnson of Seattle, WA; and her four beloved cats and golden retriever Daisy. Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Barbara Emanuels.

A celebration of Diane’s life will be held on Thursday, May 21, at 1:00pm at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church (3605 84th Ave SE), with a reception following.

MIHS students opting out of SBAC testing

Testing was scheduled to take place for MIHS juniors this week. Juniors at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle boycotted taking the test in April.

Seattle Public Schools reported that 95 percent of juniors at Garfield opted out of taking the test.

Roosevelt and Ingraham both experienced high volumes of opt-outs as well.

Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano said the district was experiencing opt-outs for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Constortium (SBAC) test at Mercer Island High School. He estimated that more than 40 students declined to take the test.

MI girls tennis dominates KingCo tournament Bethards wins singles title; Vendittis take doubles

Mercer Island girls tennis won the 3A KingCo tournament Tuesday, May 12 at Mercer Island Country Club, with the Islanders taking home both the singles and doubles titles.

Freshman Grace Bethards won the singles bracket, beating Bellevue’s Ally Du in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sarah Sweet finished third, while Kimia Preston finished seventh. With the top four qualifying for next week’s Sea-King tournament, Bethards and Sweet both advanced to districts.

Reigning state doubles champions Gabby and Lydia Venditti won the KingCo tournament dou-

bles title, beating teammates Caroline Hamilton and Sammy Sweet in the tournament final. Both teams qualified for district competition, as did Miji Suhr and Claire Mansfield, who finished fourth. Catherine Seifert and Melanie Lee placed fifth, and will go to the district tournament as alternates.

Also competing at the district tournament will be Mercer Island’s boys tennis

qualifiers. Brian Hou and Jake Bethards will compete in singles action, and the teams of Ben Elliott and Charlie Williams, Cameron Coe and Peter Williams, and Rafa Gonzalez-Posada and Christian Anderson will compete in the doubles bracket.

The 3A Sea-King district tournament take place May 19-20 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.

Behind a couple of impressive outings on the mound from starting pitcher Peter Lopes, the Mercer Island baseball team earned a trip to the 3A state tournament, beating Garfield 6-1 in their state play-in game Saturday, May 16 at Bannerwood Park.

Lopes earned the complete-game win against the Bulldogs, allowing one run off two hits in seven innings of work. It was the Mercer Island pitcher’s second complete-game win of the week, with Lopes leading the Islanders (17-7) past Bellevue 4-1 Tuesday,

The Islanders finished with a team score of 415, with Bellevue second at 438 and Interlake third at 481.

Defending 3A state singles champion Rachel Fujitani topped all singles players with a scorecard of 72 strokes, while teammate Kate Peterson tied for second with Bellevue’s Julia Dai and Tiffany Huang, finishing with 80 strokes.

and Ella Warburg tied for eighth with 89 strokes, and Madelyn Quickstad tied for 11th, shooting a 91. All advanced to the district tournament, with the top eighteen moving on.

Islander coach Tim Okamura made a point of emphasizing two Islanders in particular who saw their seasons, and prep careers, come to an end at the KingCo tournament.

“Our captains Molly White and Whitley Pearson were essential for helping our team this year, they deserve a lot of credit,” he said.

The Islanders competed at the 3A Sea-King district meet, which took place after the Reporter deadline Monday, May 18.

Garfield ends season for Islander boys soccer

With the final minutes dwindling of Saturday’s 3A boys soccer state tournament play-in game between Mercer Island and Garfield, Islanders Ryan Hill and Freddy Kleemann saw a scoring opportunity with a ball soaring overhead into the keeper’s box.

The Islanders trailed by a goal and desperately needed to score.

Unaware of each other playing the ball, both went up hard, colliding and unable to finish. Neither was quick to get up as the referee’s final whistle blew.

It was a cruel end to an otherwise special season full of high hopes for the Mercer Island boys soccer team.

Behind a goal from senior Holton Halfaker in the 13th minute, Garfield punched its ticket to the 3A state tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Islanders Saturday afternoon at Islander Stadium.

Though Mercer Island had its share of opportunities, it was the one they conceded that decided the contest.

The Islanders were without senior captain and starting defender Sean Nevin, who was in a leg brace after suffering an injury during practice the day before. Rigby called the circumstance “one of the most unfortunate things I’ve ever seen in a sport.”

“We definitely missed him for sure,” said Derek Sims, fellow captain and starting defender. “[Having] his intelligence

in the back and just knowing where he needs to be, there’s a lot more comfort and that keeps the game in our control.”

Mercer Island came out aggressive, with two corner opportunities in the game’s first five minutes.

The Mercer Island girls track and field team boasted winners in six events while the boys won three titles of their own at the KingCo championships May 13 and 15 at Juanita High School.

The Islander girls finished third overall with a team score of 83, while the boys placed fourth with a score of 45. Lake Washington won the girls meet with an overall mark of 93. Bellevue won the boys meet, scoring 126.

Victoria Gersch won titles in the 100 meters (12.7 seconds) and 200 meters

(25.88). Kayla Lee won the 400 (58.33), while teammate Piper Casey placed third.

Cece Rosenman won the 3200 (11:21.64) and placed fourth in the 1600. Kendra Watson won the 300 meter hurdles (48.21) and was runner-up in the 100 hurdles.

Mercer Island won the 200 relay, with Lee, Gersch, Casey and Watson finishing in 1:44.65. The Islanders placed second in the 400 relay, with Lee, Casey, Kendall Riley and Alexa Bauman finishing in 4:07.84

KOMEN ON A MISSION TO END BREAST CANCER

Founded in 1992 by local volunteers who shared a vision of ending breast cancer forever, the Puget Sound Affiliate has invested more than $28.6 million to fight breast cancer.

Funding from Race for the Cure and other Komen Puget Sound events support community programs, as well as groundbreaking science to find a cure.

Komen funds breast cancer early detection and education.

THE FABULOUS FOOBS

With a name like The Fabulous Foobs, the Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure team co-led by survivor Dana Chambers would have a good story behind it. Indeed, “foobs” are the result of Dana’s own journey, which began in December 2013 with a needle biopsy and diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma.

Dana, married and “mom” to a quarter horse named Gunnar, was told to prepare for surgery, chemo and a long, difficult year. Determined to win the battle, she opted for a double mastectomy, and ended up having 16 lymph nodes out too.

Dana recalls a difficult recovery from surgery, followed by a surprising rebound during chemo. Though she lost her hair and experienced pain and fatigue, she took RV trips with her

• Mary-Claire King, Ph.D., of the University of Washington to screen for mutations in the non-coding regions of breast cancer genes that may regulate when and where those genes get activated, potentially identifying novel mutations and new mechanisms for inherited breast cancer.

She signed up for her first Race for the Cure and joined thousands of Komen Puget Sound supporters and fundraisers at Seattle Center last June. “At the end of the one-mile walk I was so warm that I decided to remove my bandana in public for the first time,” she said. A photographer captured the moment when a friend kissed Dana’s bald head. That compelling shot – with Dana’s beautiful grin – graces this year’s Race flyers and ads.

Dana’s battle isn’t finished. Chemo ended, but her oncologist advised Herceptin infusions and an anti-estrogen medicine along with radiation. With treatments and reconstruction still in her future, Dana works at maintaining a positive attitude, expressing thanks to God, family, friends and a supportive medical team. “I’m going to the gym, walking, riding my horse and living my life,” Dana said. “And I’ll see all of you at Race for the Cure on June 7!”

THERE’S A SAYING THAT VOLUNTEERS DON’T NECESSARILY HAVE TIME, but they do have heart.

If that’s true, then Susan G. Komen Puget Sound volunteer Barb Tiller has heart—lots of it. The 70-year-old Seattle native has been an active Komen Puget Sound volunteer for 20 years, beginning her involvement with the Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure in 1996. This year’s Race for the Cure brings Barb’s volunteer career full circle as she tackles the challenge of wrangling close to 500 helpers as the Race volunteer co-chair.

“I’ve always loved Komen, ever since I started volunteering,” Barb says.

That love was born of a chance meeting with a pair of breast cancer survivors, a meeting she counts as a transformational moment in her journey. “They were so full of life and happy,” she recalls.

“They’d just gone through treatment and losing a breast, and I thought ‘How could they be happy going through something like that?’”

Barb soon recognized

that it is the feeling of sisterhood among survivors that lies at the root of their joy. Since then, Barb has been an active Komen volunteer, providing support for everything from administrative work in the organization’s downtown Seattle office to greeting guests at events. Her volunteer work, she says, “is just something of a passion now. I want to continue to work with Komen and be a part of the cure.”

As Race volunteer cochair, Barb is charged with managing a variety of roles required to ensure the event goes smoothly. However, her greatest joy in the role is in seeing all of the other who are also interested in finding a cure. She is inspired by these volunteers, many of them breast cancer survivors, who share her determination to bring an end to the disease.

WAYS TO SUPPORT A SURVIVOR It may be hard to know what to say or do when someone has breast cancer, even when you really want to help. Susan G. Komen has resources for “co-survivors,” along with suggested ways to offer support and take care of yourself during this difficult time.

A co-survivor can be anyone who offers support, including family, friends, spouses, partners, kids, co-workers, healthcare providers, support groups and spiritual advisors.

There are many ways to support a survivor.

Thoughtful gestures big and small mean a lot, whether the person has just been diagnosed or completed treatment years ago. By giving support you show strength and love. There are three main types of support: informational, emotional and practical. Survivors may need different types of support at different times.

Informational support involves learning all you can about breast cancer, because the more you know, the more you can help. You can learn common breast cancer terms and treatment options, make a list of questions to ask the

doctor, or gather information for your loved one and share what you’ve learned.

Emotional support means you’re aware a diagnosis of breast cancer can bring about a wide range of emotions including shock, fear, denial, sadness and anger. As your loved one goes through this, just listen. Let them express their feelings. Give them a hug if it will be of comfort.

Practical support means helping with dayto-day tasks. You could offer to cook or clean, drive them to the doctor, deliver a hot meal, do laundry, send a note or watch their kids.

Sometimes co-survivors need help too.

Support groups are available for caregivers. You can also ask others to help so that you can take a break. By going to www.komen.org/cosurvivor, you can connect with others on Komen’s cosurvivor message board and create an online calendar to assist your loved one.

Making healthy lifestyle choices Healthy lifestyle choices may help lower your risk of different types of cancer and other health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Though not all these behaviors lower the risk of breast cancer, they are good for overall health.

• Eat at least 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables every day.

• Choose 100 percent whole grain foods (such as 100 percent whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, millet and quinoa).

• Be physically active (get regular exercise).

• Limit red meat and processed meat.

Choose chicken, fish or beans more often.

• Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. (Survivors who are overweight or obese should limit high-calorie foods and beverages and increase physical activity to help with weight loss.)

• Limit “bad” fats (saturated and trans fats). These are found in foods such as red meat, fatty deli meats, poultry skin, full fat dairy, fried foods, margarine, donuts and microwave popcorn.

• Eat “good” fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats). These are found in foods such as olive and canola oil, nuts and natural nut butters, avocado and olives.

• Limit alcohol intake to less than one drink a day for women and fewer than two drinks a day for men.

Being physically active, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and to a lesser degree, eating fruits and vegetables may help lower your risk of breast cancer. Other factors are good for your overall health and may help lower the risk of other types of cancer.

PINK SCOUT PATCHES HONOR THOSE WHO BATTLE BREAST CANCER Taylan Yuasa, a senior at Mercer Island High School and active member of Seattle Buddhist Church Boy Scout Troop 252, designed and produced a series of scout patches to benefit Komen Puget Sound.

Inspired by a close relative who was battling breast cancer, Yuasa worked more than 150 community service hours from the initial design stage to selling the patches at scouting events over the spring and summer. Since the initial patch was created, the designs have become wildly popular.

Last fall, he presented a $3,500 check to Komen Puget Sound, and he’s not done yet – he’s still selling patches and accepting invitations to speak about the project.

From a young age, Yuasa was exposed to the unpredictable effects of breast cancer on his family, which he credits for teaching him some very important life lessons.

Watching his loved one live

each day without missing a beat – and continuing to go to work during chemotherapy and radiation treatments – led Taylan to his fundraising project.

“There was a time when people thought breast cancer was something to be ashamed of, something you kept secret and didn’t discuss in the company of others,” Yuasa said. “But more recently, the Susan G. Komen organization and others have vocalized the impacts this disease has had on millions, resulting in tremendous strides in funding for cancer research and awareness.”

Yuasa hopes that in shedding light on the subject and being a voice for the younger generation, he will inspire people of all ages to get involved. Yuasa attained his Eagle rank in 2010 (at age 13) and has earned dozens of merit badges and other scouting honors. His dad, Mark, is a Troop 252 Scoutmaster.

The rowing club is comprised of MIHS seniors Anika Christofferson, Margaret Seaton and Gretchen Peterson, junior Charolotte Lepp, and sophomore Isabelle Gahard.

Yuasa wins at USA Judo tournament Mercer Island senior Taylan Yuasa took first place at the USA Judo Senior National Championships May 2-3 in Irving, Texas.

12 Thunder wins Yakima Tournament The Mercer Island 12 Thunder won the May Day Mayhem Tournament, which took place April 26 in Yakima. The 12 Thunder won all five of its games and beat a team from Eagle, Idaho 7-6 in the final.
