Eleven Islanders have thrown their names in for consideration by Mercer Island voters in the November general election for City Council, according to King County Elections. This fall, there are five open seats, and all races are contested. Position No. 1: Incumbent Jane Meyer Brahm will run against

Dave Wisenteiner. Brahm was appointed in January 2011 and ran unopposed later that year. Position No. 3: Newcomers Wendy Weiker and Salim Nice will face off for the open position currently held by Mike Cero, who said he will not run again in the fall. Cero ran unopposed in the last election. Position No. 4: The position recently vacated by Joel Wachs will be open as a two-year unexpired term. Carl Silverberg and Jeff Sanderson have filed for that seat. The current Council plans to appoint someone else to fill the position until November. Position No. 5: Bruce Bassett, incumbent and current mayor,

The challenges with completing Fire Station 92 have moved past budget concerns and slow construction progress and the project, now six months behind schedule, may be delayed again. “The city rejected the Fire Station roof due to several deficiencies, including sharp debris trapped under the membrane,” said Ross Freeman, communications and sustainability manager.
