Faculty want Green River College president removed

Earlier in the week, faculty had written a letter to the college’s Board of Trustees, supporting a Vote of No Confidence against Ely and calling for her removal.

“We are gravely troubled about

the future of our college, an institution to which most of us have devoted our life’s work,” faculty wrote in the letter. “The negative trends under the presidency of Dr. Ely have intensified over the past

two years. We no longer believe that this trend will reverse under Dr. Ely’s leadership and we are asking the Board of Trustees to [ more COLLEGE page 3 ]

School board selects two finalists for superintendent FOR THE REPORTER

The Auburn School Board has selected two finalists – Michael Newman and Alan Spicciati – for district superintendent.

Newman is deputy superintendent of business and operations for Auburn schools, and Spicciati is chief accountability officer for the Highline School District.

Newman and Spicciati each will spend a day in the district next week for talks, a tour of selected schools, a meet-the-candidate community forum and a final interview.

Newman is available from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, for the forum in the James P. Fugate Administration boardroom, 915 4th St. NE. Spicciati is available from 4 to 5:30 p.m., May 21.

The public is encouraged to attend the community forums.

The candidates will speak approximately halfway through the session for about 30 minutes.

The board is scheduled to select the next superintendent at its June 8 meeting.

College to have new home for its aviation program

The flight itinerary calls for Green River College’s aviation program to take wing next summer from the Lea Hill campus and land in the valley below.

That is, the college plans to move its aviation program and some smaller programs by the fall of 2016 into a new, three-story, 30,000-squarefoot building east of Lowe’s at 1232 A Street Northeast, south of the Auburn Municipal Airport.

He has served as a teacher, principal and administrator at Highline Public Schools and in New York before coming to Highline.

On May 7, faculty filed an Unfair Labor Practice complaint with the Washington State Public Employees Relations Commission, citing “the administration’s failure to bargain in good faith, having to go to mediation yet circumventing the mediation process, intentional retaliation against union leaders, among other destructive management practices,” according to a press release from members of the faculty.

The actions come after more than a year of unsuccessful contract negotiations and a recent announcement by college officials that four programs could be eliminated. Faculty members claim the potential cuts target members of the Union Faculty and are an act of retaliation. College officials said the possible program cuts are neces-

The college has planned for several years to move its growing aviation program closer to the airport, and to relocate other operations now in its satellite at the Sound Transit Station into a college-owned building.

“We are cramped for space on the main campus,” Ely said, “so this will relieve a little of the pressure we are dealing with. Another of our goals is to expand our aviation program, so this will allow us room for expansion.”

College officials learned last year from Doug Lein, the City of Auburn’s economic

Faculty and students in the affected programs have had several rallies over the past few weeks, including Wednesday’s, and many attended an Auburn City Council meeting May 4 to raise awareness and garner support.

Attending Wednesday’s rally in support of faculty were: Karen Strickland, president of the American Federation of Teachers in Washington; Lynne Dodson, secretary and treasurer, Washington State Labor Council; and Adam Ziemkowski, legislative assistant to Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant.

“We are in solidarity and Kshama is in solidarity with you students and faculty in your

“We certainly found no real authentic progress,” said Jamie Fitzgerald, an English instructor at Green River. “The fact that this is still ongoing is deeply troubling to us.”

“To be comfortable, we would need about 2,500 square feet,” Ball said of the college’s rental needs. “That would allow for a small meeting room as well as the simulators.”

At Relay For Life events like Auburn’s, communities across the world come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight a disease that has already taken too much and too many.

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long.

One of the highlights of the event is the 10 p.m. Luminaria ceremony, a time to remember people lost to cancer, to support people who have cancer, and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past.

The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.

Relay For Life events comprise the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

“We’re also looking for a space that has a sturdy foundation base; it has to be solid to hold those simulators,” Ely added.

“They’re fairly heavy, and almost all of them move, so they really need to be on concrete,” Ball said.

On the second floor, Ball continued, will be the college’s adult basic education classrooms and its general education classrooms, student affairs, student services and the Small Business Assistance Center.

On the first floor the college will settle most of the

businesses operating at the Sound Transit Station: the Washington Environmental Training Center, which trains water and wastewater technicians and operators; Washington Certification Services; and Assembly Backflow Testers.

Latitude should complete its project by July 1.

The center will cost about $10 million to build, but the total project, including land acquisition of the improved site, is slightly more than $20 million.

Ask any salesperson what they need to sell a product and they’ll say two things.

First, there must be a need for the product being sold.

Second, there has to be rapport between the company and the consumer.

The news industry is no different from a business in this sense. Information is a valuable commodity that will never depreciate, so the need for TV news stations and newspapers remains strong.

What the news industry doesn’t have is rapport. For many reasons, the public finds it hard to trust us.

According to a 2013 Gallup poll, only 21 percent of Americans rated newspaper reporters as highly honest and ethical.

That’s just above lawyers and TV reporters (20 percent), cars salespeople (9 percent) and members of Congress (8 percent), and right below business executives (22 percent) and local officeholders (23 percent).

I’m no statistician, but those numbers don’t look too friendly for us, and it only gets worse.

According to the Pew Research Center, 66 percent of Americans said news stories are inaccurate.

(Note that these numbers refer to the news industry in general. When people were asked about their local or favorite news sources, 62 percent of Americans said news stories are accurate.)

Additionally, 77 percent of Americans said the news sources are politically biased, and 80 percent said the news is often influenced by people and organizations with deep pockets.

In short, these numbers make for a tough sell. Much of the public doesn’t trust the news industry, because they think our information isn’t accurate, it’s forwarding a political agenda, or it’s censored and controlled.

I’d first like to commend the fine work that Brocc Synder (elder of the Enumclaw Calvary Presbyterian Church) and his wife, Lynne, have been cited for in rendering assistance to our unfortunate homeless population here in Auburn. I would also like to acknowledge the selfless and beneficent work that many other local organizations, such as the Auburn Food Bank, Rotary, Auburn Youth Resources, Soroptimists and City Hall have done in providing resources to those in need.

The article made it sound as if the 100 attendees are all homeless. Actually, the largest percentage of those attending are not homeless. They are single people, young and old, not wanting to cook for themselves. Some come for companionship, some are children whose parents tell them to come and eat,

www.auburn-reporter.com some are single mothers just getting off work. Many are low income, and yes, the homeless are from Auburn and Kent. This is why it’s called a community supper.

It should be noted there are cliques within our homeless community, and some of the robberies and assaults happen from within, not only at night but also during daylight hours.

To think we would not become a magnet for the homeless from surrounding areas if there were a tent city is just not realistic.

Those of us who come in contact with the homeless in different situations come to know some of them very well – where they come from, what they do with their food stamps, where they sleep, who’s in jail, who had a fight, etc.

In April, the Auburn Reporter asked its readers, “Would you support a tent city in Auburn.” Eightythree percent said no. I hope the City Council is listening. Once again, I do not believe a tent city is the answer.

[ STILL from page 5 ] confusion and distrust many other people feel towards the industry. Every time a journalist makes up sources for a story or a news anchor is caught lying on TV, the entire industry’s credibility takes a hit.

But even though the industry is up against the ropes, there is still time to come back. All we need to do is earn back that public trust.

Think about other public services we rely on: doctors, teachers, police officers. Besides working for the public good, they have one other thing in common.

They’re accredited.

Vouched for. Licensed.

They’ve gone through rigorous study and testing to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary for serving the public.

(By the way, nurses, pharmacists, teachers and doctors top that Gallup list of most trusted professions.

If the news industry is going to come back from this public relations nightmare, then we’ve got to earn that same level of credibility.

It should take more than a bachelors degree in liberal arts, a laminated press pass and a by-line to be a journalist.

Physicians and other medical professionals play a central role in a person with dementia’s care. Effective communication is important to ensure the appropriate treatment is recommended.

and honest reporting, even if that means getting their news a little slower.

Unfortunately, the heads of the news industry have gone in the opposite direction.

In an attempt to staunch the slow but deadly bleeding of the industry, many reporters and journalists have lost their jobs so newspapers and TV stations can stay financially afloat.

This only makes it harder for remaining journalists to gather and report accurate information. Some newspapers and news stations may be in the financial black, but if responsibility could be recorded in a ledger, we’d be deep in the red.

The news industry shouldn’t be treated like a business, and the bottom line shouldn’t be about money.

It should be about trust, ethics and honesty. Those are the ideas the public wants the news industry to adhere to.

If we as journalists hold ourselves to that standard on a national level, and find a way to make us more accountable and trustworthy, the public will start believe in the fourth estate again.

The industry needs to come together and create an independent, apolitical organization to oversee the development and accreditation of a new generation of educated, ethical and honest journalists.

Accreditation of journalists would change the news industry in several ways.

First, a national organization can lead a coordinated effort to educate prospective journalists on media law, First Amendment rights and reporting ethics.

Passing an accreditation exam would be similar to a lawyer passing the bar exam, or a doctor’s medical exams. It’s a way to keep track of journalists who have taken the time and effort to educate themselves on the ever-changing news world.

As more journalists become accredited, we will see a shift in the industry’s attitude towards news, replacing the notion that news should be reported first and fact-checked later with the belief that the news should be more accurate than fast, and more honest than political.

The American public is tired of rapid-fire news reporting, where facts are shot out of a cannon at readers and viewers without context or a knowledge base. They want accurate

Q. A friend of mine recently had a diagnostic mammogram and I had a screening one. What is the difference?

A. In terms of the initial x-ray study that is done (a mammogram), there is no difference in the images we review. The real difference between a diagnostic mammogram and a screening one is the frame of mind of the radiologist who interprets the study.

A screening mammogram is meant for a woman who is asymptomatic. In other words, she has no direct breast-related problems and simply needs her yearly check up. The radiologist does a detailed read of that mammogram, looking for signs of breast cancer.

If everything is normal, the woman only needs to touch base with her primary care provider and return in one year for a routine checkup.

A diagnostic mammogram these days should be more appropriately called a diagnostic breast evaluation.

It might begin with a regular mammogram involving both breasts, but it is meant for

a woman who is reporting a problem. One exception would be if the woman had a recent screening mammogram and was called back to further evaluate an area of potential concern on that recent study.

However, in other cases, several scenarios could prompt a diagnostic evaluation.

Maybe the patient or her doctor feels a new lump; maybe she has another problem like new onset focal breast pain, nipple discharge, or visual changes she or her doctor notice on her breast.

In these cases, the radiologist needs to look at the entire mammogram as he or she would a screening mammogram – but then also needs to focus his or her attention on the problem reported by the patient.

In modern breast centers, the radiologist will then correlate the findings on the mammogram with other imaging studies and generally perform a physical exam. This is to ensure he

the body.

This infected arterial plaque is not the same plaque we talk about on your teeth at dental visits, but it does contain some of the same bacteria, and research seems to be pointing toward an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks in people with gum disease. The reasons are not fully understood … yet.

What is clear is that while approximately 66 percent of people without heart disease have gum disease, up to 91 percent of people with heart disease have it.

Many researchers are starting to believe that the chronic inflammation present in the mouth of someone with gum disease also leads to inflammation in the lining of the blood vessels.

That would be consistent with an increased risk of stroke and heart attack, since an inflamed blood vessel has a smaller opening, and allows less blood to flow. That results in higher blood pressure.

There is a risk for some of that inflamed arterial plaque to break off and travel in the blood stream as a “clot” until it gets trapped somewhere in a heart vessel, causing a heart attack, or in a brain vessel, resulting in a stroke.

First, some quick and sobering facts: Someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds, and every four minutes someone dies because of a stroke.

Strokes are the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., and can occur at any age. Interestingly, more women than men have fatal strokes, partly because of the use of oral contraceptives. Your risk of a stroke doubles each decade after you reach 55.

So what do strokes have to do with your teeth and gums? Is there a connection, and can improving your oral health prevent things like strokes, heart attacks and other serious health issues? While the idea that problems in the mouth cause diseases elsewhere in the body makes sense, it has been difficult to prove conclusively.

Although no direct link has yet been proven, more and more research is pointing to oral health and systemic health being connected.

In people with gum disease, chewing and tooth brushing release bacteria into the bloodstream. Several species of bacteria that cause periodontitis have been found in arterial plaques in the heart and other parts of

Of course, any article written by me will include any applicable health connections to untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Some of my previous articles have discussed aspects of this deadly and vastly-underdiagnosed condition, where the brain and heart are deprived of essential levels of oxygen, hundreds of times per night, due to airway blockages. A CPAP or an oral appliance device can greatly reduce or eliminate the many health risks associated with untreated sleep apnea, including the 300 percent increase in stroke risk.

Further research is needed to determine how OSA increases the risk of a stroke.

If you haven’t had a full dental exam in a year or more; one that includes careful measurement of your periodontal pockets, bone and bleeding levels, it’s time to make an appointment. That now appears to be particularly true if you have a family history of heart disease or stroke, in light of the research that is being done in this area.

What happens after you or a loved one has had a stroke? How does that impact the ability to care for your mouth? The answer is, “it depends.”

The severity of your stroke, and how quickly you were able to receive definitive emergency medical care, will have a significant impact on how much damage to your brain occurs, and how much of your function will be able to regain with appropriate rehabilitation therapy.

Additional mammograms and/ or a sonogram, sometimes called an ultrasound examination, may be added to the evaluation. The radiologist then correlates the mammogram, the sonogram and the physical examination (and any other radiology study that might have been done) to arrive at a diagnosis for that woman.

I believe it is also important for the radiologist to then review all the studies and his or her recommendations with the patient before she leaves the center, so she understands what is going on. Fortunately, most reported breast problems turn out to be normal life changes, but sometimes not, so it is important to report any concerns you have to your doctor and get them checked out.

In summary, a screening mammogram is a quick inand-out examination for the woman who has no specific breast problems but simply needs a routine check up.

It should involve no more that 20 or 30 minutes of her day and be done once a year. A diagnostic breast evaluation is designed for a woman who needs the breast radiologist to focus on a problem and do a more detailed analysis of it, to determine if it is potentially cancerous.

Michael Tyler Yenne was taken from us suddenly late March of 2015. He was born August 21, 1992 in Bremerton Naval Hospital. His parents Mike and Traci Yenne are devastated by the loss.

Their lives have been forever altered.

We have some peace knowing Michael is resting in the presence of Jesus Christ and will never again experience the pain, hurt or despair that this life brings.

Michael was loyal, loving, thoughtful of others, sensitive, funny and hard-working. He was an avid car enthusiast, enjoyed loud (or so it seemed to us) music and his aquariums of fish.

Michael is survived by his parents Mike and Traci Yenne, sister Rebecca, half-sister Amber Shaffer, grandma Donna Stanley, grandma Vicki Nelson, grandparents John and Sandy Yenne and Harry and Gail Whitman and by many uncles and aunties and cousins who treasured him.

Una C. Lohman, 85, of Youngtown, Arizona, passed away on May 9, 2015.

Una was an active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Auburn,WA, and the Shepherd of the Desert Church in Sun City, AZ as well as a member of the sorority, Rho-Epsilon Sigma Alpha.

She was also an active volunteer with the Auburn Multicare Hospital, Auburn Senior Center, White River Museum and Auburn Bravo Arts. Una also loved to travel the world.

She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Robert Edward Lohman, parents, Joseph and Mina Unterseher and four siblings. She is survived by her loving children, David (Vicky) Lohman, Connie (Timothy) Aguilar and Rickey (Ann) Lohman, nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Alice “Gail” Holt, 77, of Auburn, WA passed away on May 1, 2015 following a long illness.

Born on September 4, 1937 in Tacoma to Alice Viola and Arthur Copp Wright. Gail graduated from Enumclaw High School, class of 1955.

She met and married her loving husband, Ronald Holt, on June 14, 1957, moving to Auburn in 1962. They owned A.C. Wright and Sons Painting Contractors in Auburn for 33 years in partnership with her brother Gene & Arlene Wright.

Gail was a wonderful homemaker who raised their four children with an abundance of unconditional love and support.

She loved to cook, enjoyed reading and playing card games.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 57 years, Ronald G. Holt; daughters Laurie (Tom) Marino, Karen (Michael) Harbin, Connie (Steve) Williams and son Ron (Michelle) Holt. She also leaves behind grandsons Brent (Alison) Marino, Marcus Marino and Christofer Holt and great grandchildren Liam, Henley and Luca.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Gene Wright. She is also survived by her brother William (Marcie) Wright, sisters in law Arlene Wright and Carol (Bob) Bernsten. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins who will dearly miss her also.

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jim Zorn was keynote speaker. Zorn spoke to the packed room with his inspirational words on how youth programs like the Boys & Girls Club help children grow into productive members of society by providing a positive influence and environment.

Zorn stressed that two characteristics – influence and environment – can create success anywhere, whether it is a Boys and Girls Club or an NFL team. Zorn encouraged the nearly 500 people to give to the Boys & Girls Club, which does so much to empower youth. Thanks to all who gave time and money, the Boys & Girls Club was able to beat last year’s total by raising $61,215.

As far as Robyn Saarenas is concerned, this may be her best soccer team poised to play its finest hour.

Auburn Riverside, the South Puget Sound League 3A champion, is ready to take the next step by qualifying for the state playoffs this week.

The Ravens (12-2 in league, 12-3-1 overall) open the district playoffs against heralded Central Kitsap (12-0-1 Narrows League, 12-2-1) in a battle of top seeds at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School.

Auburn Riverside needs to win one of its two guaranteed district matches to reach the 16-team state playoffs for the fourth time in Saarenas’ 13 years as Ravens coach.

Saarenas likes her team’s chances.

“We’re pumped up, excited for every day we have out on the soccer field,” said Saarenas, whose well-balanced, deep and recordbreaking team has won seven of its last eight matches. “The word we’ve been using all year is special. … We’ve been more fit than the other teams. We have more numbers of guys scoring goals. We have more freshman on this team. Any-

thing we can think of … it’s always just ‘wow.’ This group is special.”

And leading the way has been senior striker Jordan Loomans, who set a single-season scoring record with 17 goals. Loumans has been the recipient of many welltimed passes from senior midfielder Adrian Correa, a four-year starter and a deceptively quick and skilled all-around player.

Brandon Gonzalez, a junior midfielder who took his sophomore year off to play for the Sounder’s Academy developmental team, has joined Correa to provide a formidable one-two punch.

“They have been pretty tough to handle,” Saarenas said.

On the backside, seniors Nick Rogerson and Charlie Gulotta have been stout.

Sophomore Andy Starkle has proven consistent in goal.

“We have a core of very talented leaders with an amazing supporting cast,” Saarenas said.

“Our best players trust everyone on the field. You don’t see that very often.

“They’re good kids. They like each other. They get along off the field. They have this common goal: to see how far we can go.

The college has a fiduciary responsibility to use its resources wisely. While it may be painful and difficult, the college is obligated to ensure financial viability of the institution.

In the wake of educational contract negotiations and proposed program closures, faculty, staff and administration are all feeling the impact of these difficult discussions, which is not unexpected, given the circumstances. Accusations have been made about the college that have little or no basis in fact; sensationalism draws more attention than the truth, more often than not.
