Bicycle club offers leisurely way to tour island New members welcome as group continues to grow

No doubt about it, Whidbey Island is beauty. One of the ways to absorb the majestic vistas of the area is to take the traditional Sunday afternoon drive. Here’s another suggestion -- get out of the car and onto a bike.

The Whidbey Island Bicycle Club offers weekly rides based out of Oak Harbor’s Honeymoon Bay Coffee Co. on Saturday mornings to “show off the island,” according to one of the club’s founders, Matt Plush.

Whidbey is an “awesome place to ride.”

During non-winter months, the club also sponsors mid-week bike and mountain bike rides.

Brian Wood, Ross VanVactor and Plush organized the club five years ago. After riding in Woodinville’s Stinky Spoke Ride for several years, they decided to organize a similar event for the Kettles.

“So in 45 days we started Whidbey Island Bicycle Club and

put on the event,” Plush said.

The event was the first Mussels in the Kettles non-competitive bike ride, which ran in conjunction with Coupeville’s Musselfest.

The first Mussels in the Kettles ride attracted 60 riders; the latest welcomed nearly 300.

The club now hosts four major public events. In addition to the Mussels ride, they sponsor Cookin’ in the Kettles (part of the BuDu mountain bike racing series), the Trick or Treat Ride at the Kettles and the Thanks Give’er (a Cascade Cyclocross Series race).

Since it inception five years ago, the club grown to 75 members.

“Our expectations for WIBC when we started was to offer community members a chance to meet up with fellow cyclists on Whidbey Island, to build a base for riders to enjoy the activity of cycling with others,” Plush said.

The weekly rides average about five to seven riders, Plush said, and the numbers rise as the weather improves.

Whidbey Island Bicycle Club hosts several events throughout the year. Last year it held a cyclocross event at Fort Nugent Park.

Many of the rides are “spur of the moment,” he added.

“We will do a ride in the Kettles when the flowers are in bloom or a group might head off island.”

Plush likes the way the club has developed and said it “is in a good state right now.”

New members are welcome.

“We could use more people to join in on our club events and group rides,” he said. “We could also use more people to step forward and offer to lead rides so when groups take off we can offer every rider a group setting with

a pace that they a comfortable with.”

Know finances before you buy or lease a new vehicle

For many people, buying or leasing a car is their first big ticket item. Having a plan for how this new vehicle will fit into your budget can help you be confident about your decision and keep your finances in check.

“Planning for large purchases can seem daunting, but having the right information about your finances can make it easier to meet your goal,” says Mike Kane, vice president of Consumer Credit Operations at Ally Financial. “Get prepared so you can walk into the dealership with confidence.”

This April, which is Financial Literacy Month, Kane is offering some tips to help you make a smart decision.

Do your research. Sure, you’ll want to research what kind of car and options you want, but also do your financial research. Use free online tools like payment calculators or vehicle valuation guides to help you prepare.

Evaluate your wants and needs. You may want the car with all the bells and whistles, but if it doesn’t fit into your budget, it’s not a wise purchase. Decide what you need versus what would be nice to have, and stick to that when negotiating.

Create a doable budget.

Whether you buy or lease, you’ll likely have a fixed amount to pay monthly for your new car. But that’s not the only cost to consider.

Remember to factor in gas, insurance and any additional costs like maintenance or emergencies. A general guideline is to keep those total costs below 20 percent of your monthly take-home pay.

Know your credit profile. If you are planning to finance a vehicle, your credit score can affect whether you are approved for financing, as well as the rate you will receive. A number of financial institutions, like Ally, have begun providing customers with

their FICO credit scores for free. Look into whether your bank is among them.

You can also obtain your credit report from each of the credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) for free once yearly at annualcreditreport. com Understand your options.

There are a few different options when buying or leasing a vehicle, such as paying cash, getting a loan from a bank or credit union, or negotiating a retail contract or lease through a dealership. If you finance your vehicle, the length of the finance contract can impact the total amount you pay.

The longer you take to pay, the lower your monthly payments will be, but your total cost to finance rises.

Avoid breakdowns with a pre-trip car check If your upcoming travel plans include a road trip, the last thing you want is unexpected car trouble to leave you stranded at the side of the road. A pre-trip vehicle check is the best way to ensure that your car is ready to get you to your destination.

“Taking steps to have auto repairs performed before long distance driving will not only give you peace of mind, but will also help avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down when you’re miles from home,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council.

Protect your vehicle and your own safety by following these recommendations from the Car Care Council and complete a thorough pre-trip checklist before hitting the road: n Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. n Check filters and fluids, including engine oil,

power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. n Check hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear.

These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. n Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread.

Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. n Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

Following a vehicle service schedule is one way to help make your car more efficient and environmentally-friendly.

n Hang onto your current vehicle and limit the number of new cars you buy over the course of a lifetime.

Extending vehicle life is as simple as taking care of your vehicle properly. You’ll gain years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates. n Follow a vehicle service schedule including fuel-saving steps like keep-

ing tires properly inflated, replacing air filters regularly and using the correct motor oil.

Routine maintenance helps reduce emissions and fuel consumption, saving money at the pump. n Recycle or properly dispose motor oil, tires, batteries, fluids and other vehicle components to help protect the planet when performing vehicle maintenance or repairs. n Drive green and recognize that how you drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Check engine light on? Don’t panic yet

There are many reasons for this alert It’s a situation that has likely happened to you.

You’re driving down the road when out of nowhere the words “check engine” illuminate from the dashboard.

While this glowing symbol may cause you to panic, there are a few things you should know about this common issue.

“Motorists should not get spooked when the check engine light comes on,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council.

“When illuminated, the check engine light usually means that a vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly.”

LIST OF COMMON CAUSES Common malfunctions that can cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, or spark plugs and wires.

If the light flashes, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may include catalytic converter damage.

“Even if the vehicle appears to be run-

ning normally, ignoring the warning light could result in more costly repairs,” continued White.

“At the very least, the light could be alerting you to an engine problem that is negatively impacting fuel economy and costing you money.”

SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE When scheduling service, make sure the repair shop that examines your vehicle has professional technicians who are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair.

The technician will connect your vehicle’s computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will provide trouble codes indicating why the check engine light was activated.

Once the problem is identified and the repair is made, the car’s computer is then reset.

Tires send a strong message about your vehicle.

Brake dust, grime and dirt can give your car a dull and aged appearance, so take time to scrub not only the tires themselves, but also the wheels and surrounding carriage.

Add shine with a waterbased spray formula that contains silicone emulsions to penetrate the rubber.

Finish with a wax that gives an extra element of shine while protecting the finish in between washes.

In addition to using quality detailing products, it’s also important to make sure you have the right car care accessories as well.

Use a sponge or cleaning mitten that’s made for washing cars instead of an old rag.

When applying wax, its best to use an applicator pad, or even better, buy a wax kit that includes one.

Using a microfiber towel is great for buffing off wax or polishing interior and will not leave the lint typical of a cotton towel.
