What is the Kitsap Great Give? 2014 was the first year of the Kitsap Great Give. In that first installment, over 2,000 different donors gave $540,000 to 200 nonprofits working in Kitsap County. Simply put, that was the greatest single day of charity that Kitsap County has ever experienced! This year, in the second year of the Kitsap Great Give, the goal is to raise at least $750,000 in online donations for local nonprofits. Whether or not we reach that goal and provide this amazing gift to our local nonprofits is up to you and the thousands of other residents of this County who we hope will participate on May 5. No donation is too small, so please take part in the Great Give.
Why should I bother to donate online on May 5? There are lots of reasons to take part on May 5. First, you’ll be part of something bigger than yourself, a group of thousands of people who donate that day to celebrate and support 230 nonprofit organizations working in every corner of the Greater Kitsap area. If we all take part, we can smash the goal of raising $750,000 that day! Second, this is your chance to learn about all of the wonderful nonprofits that are working hard every day to make our communities better places to live, work, and play. At www.kitsapgreatgive.org you can view the profiles of 230 nonprofits that work in Kitsap County. Third, any donations you make

For instance, if you donate $100 to a nonprofit through www.kitsapgreatgive.org that day, the nonprofit will actually receive $110, $115, or more dollars. You see, some very generous sponsors have donated over $140,000 to this event. That money will be given to all of the nonprofits taking part on May 5 – the more donations a nonprofit receives, the more of the $140,000 they will receive. So make sure you donate to your favorite nonprofits on May 5 and help them get part of that $140,000!

So how exactly does it work? It’s very simple, really. For 24 hours, from 12:00 a.m. on May 5 until 11:59, May 5, you can go to www. kitsapgreatgive.org, look through the 230 local nonprofits listed there, and donate as much or as little ($10 minimum) to as many nonprofits as you’d like in a single transaction using a credit card. That’s it. The website will keep a running total in real-time of the total amount raised so far; so you can check in throughout the day and see if we’re getting close to the $750,000 goal. And you can also see, in real-time, how much money each of “your” nonprofits has raised that day. Help nonprofits. Help our communities. Win prizes for your nonprofits. Feel good about yourself. Our mission at the Foundation is to “improve our community’s quality of life by connecting people who care with causes that matter.” The Kitsap Great Give accomplishes that mission in an efficient and county-wide manner.

The Importance of Charitable Giving in our Communities
Mother Teresa once said, “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” I like to think of this quote in the context of philanthropy (charitable giving). I think of the size of the flame in the lamp as a sign of the health of our communities; and I think of philanthropy as the oil in the lamp. Charitable giving, the dollars and time that we all give to nonprofits in our community, has a huge impact on the size of the flame because the nonprofits in our community provide so many of the services and qualities that make our communities healthy. The Kitsap Great Give is designed to put a lot of oil in our communities’ lamps. If we all take part in the event, we’ll raise over $750,000 for nonprofits in our community on May 5. It will be the largest day of charity ever experienced in this County, the single greatest injection of oil ever made into the lamp! 230 different nonprofits are eligible to receive your donations at www.kitsapgreatgive.org on May 5.
That’s 230 organizations that educate our children and adults, protect and improve our environment, take care of our elderly and disabled, provide fun and meaning through arts and culture, support our veterans, provide food to the hungry, give clothes to the poor, and help to heal those suffering from drug addictions and mental health issues. I encourage you to go to www.kitsapgreatgive.org on May 5 and, if nothing else, just look through all of the nonprofits listed there and see the immense benefits that nonprofits and philanthropy bring to our community. We need to keep all of these lamps burning brightly. As it stands already, a lot of oil is put into our nonprofit lamps in the greater Kitsap area. In 2012, a massive study was released showing the level of giving in each community around our country in 2008 (you can look it up online at “How America Gives” and search by your city). This study found
that the good citizens of Kitsap County donated over $105 million dollars to charity in 2008. And the study was only capturing about 60% of actual giving, which means it is likely that members of our community –you, me, and all of our neighbors in this County – donated over $150 million to charity in 2008. That ranks Kitsap County as the 255th most giving county in the country (out of 3,115 counties). Also of note is the total revenue of the nonprofits in our community. There are approximately 250 public charities based in Kitsap County. In 2012, they had a combined revenue of $650 million. That’s $650 million that these nonprofits spent to help us, our neighbors, and our families and to make our community a better place to live, work, and play. This year, our goal is to raise $10,000 to purchase a trailer to transport band equipment. We perform over 30 times per year, and a trailer would be a very useful addition. The Hometown Band is a community concert band that has been entertaining Kitsap County audiences since 1982. Comprised of volunteer musicians of varying skill levels, the band provides an opportunity for lifelong music education and fellowship. Local community events are enhanced by the band’s performance of tunes including classical, jazz, patriotic, popular, and seasonal.

We offer Employment Counseling, Job Placement help, and Professional Resume and Cover Letter Assistance. Since 1995, we have had over 45,000 visits for employment related services. Many of the individuals we work with have “fallen through the cracks.” They have often exhausted their unemployment benefits, some have become homeless, and/or have to much pride to go on welfare. People need people! When we're young, we work, raise families, and socialize. As we grow older, especially in rural communities, retirement and health issues often isolate us. This isolation can bring on depression, compound illnesses, and even lead to untimely death. Since 2001 Faith in Action has been supporting the seniors of North Mason and South Kitsap by providing volunteer-based, free, non-medical services. In 2008, in response to the unmet needs of our senior's for community we began fundraising for the HUB Center for Seniors. The HUB is now being built at 111 NE Old Belfair Hwy. in Belfair. Even though building has begun, we are still in need of funds to finish and furnish the first class facility that our senior's deserve. The Poulsbo Marine Science Center is kept open and running by the Aquarium Director and the Volunteers. It is a chance for people to support their local community and the Marine Science Center, learn about marine life, while working with the public.There are at least two volunteers are on duty whenever the Center is open and there are two three-hour shifts per day (10:45-1:45 and 1:15-4:15, Thursday – Sunday.) Volunteering at the MSC is fun, you get to learn more about the marine animals by observation or reading the available books, and you get to meet some great people. Donations can be made directly to the Poulsbo Marine Science Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, at the center. The Center depends upon volunteers to help with a range of tasks. Volunteer orientation classes are held each month. Training is available for feeding fish, docenting, helping with educational programs, and many other tasks.

St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Assistance Office was established in Bremerton in 1937, as the charitable works of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic church in West Bremerton. In 1984 the Thrift store moved to 1117 N. Callow and the Food bank and Assistance Office to 1137 N. Callow. The Assistance Office and Food Bank serve food baskets, government commodities, clothing furniture, furnishings, school supplies and various other types of assistance, which includes rental and utility funding to all those in need. Special holiday food baskets are available for families struggling during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays. Compassionate assistance is given at no cost and without discrimination. Our main service area is the Bremerton School District, however, some assistance stretches county wide, largely depending on availability and funding.

St. Vincent de Paul operates the Birkenfeld Stella Maris House, a 17 bed women and children’s shelter. Women and children are provided with safe housing, food, bus passes, case management as well as other services to help them re-build confidence in themselves, learn basic life skills and become self-sufficient. All donations made to the St. Vincent de Paul Assistance Office go directly to fund the programs provided to those in need. Donations made to the Thrift Store are sold with proceeds also going to help fund various programs.
