This year, there are several recent additions: Little Islanders, Vashon Preschool, Honeybee Play School and Vashon Children’s Center. These programs join several longtime island favorites. Combined, the old and new programs offer a variety of options where young children will thrive.

But summer is up next, and as always Vashon is full of a variety of activities to engage young islanders. Here there are possibilities that range from art to sports to theater — options for everybody.

Come August, The Beachcomber will publish the fall issue of Island Child, with information about the public and private schools on the island. But for now, we wish you a good summer and encourage families to partake of some of the many offerings in the pages to come.

Creativity will burst out of the art studio at Harbor School this summer when faculty art teacher Alisara Martin will lead students in exploring their inner artists.

Every day will bring a new activity, from large scale paper maché animals to botanical watercolor painting, from screen printing T-shirts and bags to abstract plaster sculpture. Students will learn to think like an artist and bring their own concepts and visions to fruition.

Students will experiment with painting from observation, creating relief and screen prints, and making printed hand-bound books and cards from their own handmade paper. Students can choose to develop work in whatever medium speaks to them, as well as combine media to articulate their unique vision.

Cost: $200 Member, $220 General + $50 lab fee Students will celebrate the arts of Japan and will throw a tea bowl on the potter’s wheel to fire in the raku kiln, make a rope-incised clay vessel like those of the Jomon period, design and construct a painted Oribe-style dish and model one of Japan’s beloved snow monkeys.

Beginning with unarmed “hand-tohand” combat, this class gives the student a safe and reliable set of beginning combat techniques for use on stage. As the class progresses, more advanced concepts will be outlined with students studying a variety of armed maneuvers involving stage weapons. Strict attention is paid to safety and technique.

Learn to swim Kids can learn to swim at all three of the Vashon pools this summer.

The Vashon Pool and the Vashon Golf and Swim Club will offer two-week sessions of classes to the public throughout the summer. The Vashon Athletic Club offers lessons to members and non-members alike throughout the year.

Campers learn they are important creations of God and enjoy swimming at the local pool, canoeing, carnival, games, archery, a talent show and campfires.

Junior Crew Summer Season Ages: 13 to 18 (entering 8th and 12th grades Dates: Monday through Thursday, Session 1— July 6 to July 16 and Session 2 — July 20 to July 30. For those taking the second session, there is an optional regatta at Green Lake on Aug. 1, which includes an additional practice on July 31. The fee for the regatta and practice is $85.
