At approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13, Forks Police Officer Mike Gentry was in a vehicle pursuit ending in a collision with suspect Dillan J. Klepps of Forks.

The suspect is still at large for multiple charges including a Department of Corrections warrant, eluding a police vehicle, reckless driving, criminal trespass 2, obstructing a law enforcement officer, malicious mischief 2, and driving while license suspended in the third degree.

CHASE, from page 1 Gentry initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for expired registration on Fifth Avenue and Bogachiel Way. The driver attempted to hide the vehicle in a parking lot, and when the officer entered the parking lot, the driver positioned the vehicle in a head-on fashion where Gentry was able to identified the driver as Dillian J. Klepps. Klepps accelerated toward the police vehicle at a high rate of speed causing Gentry to swerve out of the suspect’s way to avoid a head-on collision.

Gentry proceeded to follow the suspect for eluding a police

vehicle and a Department of Corrections escape warrant. The vehicle continued to elude the police vehicle reaching 90 mph on Bogachiel Way where the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Rayonier Gate at the end of Bogachiel Way. After rolling the vehicle, the suspect got out of the vehicle and continued to ignore Gentry’s commands and continued to flee the scene into the wooded area. The vehicle was impounded and the suspect is still at large. If you have any information on the whereabouts of the subject, call 9-1-1 immediately.

lost from a volunteer’s wages; Spouses/Orphans insurance in the unlikely event a firefighter dies while actively responding to an event; and contributions toward a pension. In our community we have quite a few retired volunteers that are receiving up to $300/month in pension payments.

It’s been my pleasure to support the Forks/Beaver Fire Department (Clallam Co. Fire Protection District #1) for over 20 years. Our department has accomplished a lot through the heroics of our volunteers. An untold number of structures have been saved — both the burning ones and sometimes adjacent buildings.

We’ve come a long way from Benjamin Franklin’s first volunteer fire department which was a bucket brigade. Here in Forks we have records of a volunteer fire department since 1939!

In the West End we have several departments: Forks/Beaver, Quillayute, LaPush and Clallam Bay. All departments are in need

of the whale shut so he could not sink. He might be laughing at you but I believe he is dishonored and sad that you will kill so easily what you don’t need.

So why not be wise like the great Chief Dan George and honor the whales left by offering tourist adventures to see the whales up close?

Each year the monetary value to the Makah will be 10 times greater by sharing your unique ancestral relationship. A suggestion would be to establish an adventure program with your renowned museum.

Walk the path of a true warrior spirit and quit following the white man’s modern machine weakness.

Dear Editor: This letter is in response to Patsy Brown’s letter to the editor. First I’d like to thank Patsy for supporting the Girl Scouts and purchasing cookies. I have participated in more fundraisers over the years in Forks than I can count and the support from the community is very much appreciated.

After all, it’s about raising our children to be strong, confident, independent adults, as they will someday be taking over where we leave off. Congratulations

Setting the record straight on Senior Safe Night

to the gentleman who couldn’t eat cookies but stated he never missed a chance to give money to pretty girls and made his donation even though Patsy felt the message portrayed in his comment worried her.

I did the same yesterday in Sequim to the young ladies selling me cookies. I donated the cookies to the troops but took the time to thank the girls and acknowledge them and how pretty they were.

They are proud of their special Girl Scout uniforms; they work hard, learn values and are proud of what they do. Part of being confident is to feel good about yourself and having someone acknowledge that is very encouraging to a young person who may have never felt they were good enough or pretty enough or handsome enough.

She refuses to contribute to the $70,000 Senior Party “Safe Night” because it appears to her that the community tolerates illegal substance use every night of the year except graduation night?

The $70,000 that you are referring to is what the kids raise at the Scholarship Auction. They have adults who volunteer and assist with the auction and guidance but it is up to the kids to get the donations to be auctioned and the kids run the auction.

Dear Editor, What if your house was on fire and no one came? We have a very impressive all-volunteer fire department here in the community. In order to be able to continue our success in taking care of our friends and neighbors, we need volunteers.

What does it mean to be a volunteer? It means that if one, volunteers come out every Tuesday night for one to two hours.

In order to be safe, we have a training program that we have our volunteers complete.

This will take additional time to complete the course. Once a volunteer is certified, they are then asked to respond to calls when they are available — any time of the day or night. In years past, the average number of calls per year have been 60-70 calls.

Since October 2014 we have recorded 72 dispatches.

The dispatches range from burning structures, chimney fires, smell of smoke, motor vehicle accidents, assisting other community organizations including the ambulance corps, and local law enforcement, and sadly, a significant number of false alarms either to defective alarms or unauthorized burning.

While this opportunity isn’t just for anyone, it can be very rewarding to save someone’s home or even life. Anyone between the ages of 18-45 can apply to become a volunteer. A volunteer will need the support of their employer to allow them to take time away if a call comes in during work hours. Sadly, this often means a loss of income for the absence from the job to our volunteers.

We do not compensate our volunteers. There are several things that we do provide volunteers at no cost: 24-7 Accidental Death and/or Dismemberment insurance policy; Coverage in the case of accident while volunteering which includes time

of volunteers.

While we can’t all serve as volunteer firefighters, it’s my hope that we can strengthen our department and find some more volunteers to meet our community’s needs. If you or someone you know may be interested in volunteering in the Forks/Beaver area, please contact Chief Bill Paul by calling 374-5561 (please leave a message — he too is a volunteer and may be at work when you call). Our department is in critical need of volunteers available during business hours (Mondays-Fridays).

I’d like to thank all those who have and/or are currently volunteering. Our community is better because of your commitment to protect our lives and property.

THE REAL FORKS Memory Lane

By Christy Rasmussen-Ford You have been forced to stare at my mug up there 125 times.

I apologize for that, but to celebrate my 125th column, we’re going to walk down memory lane. I took a poll to decide the top 10 quotes of all time. Those polled (just myself) decided that these were the best ones. Enjoy!

1. “Despite what people will tell you, squirrels do not taste like chicken. In fact nothing tastes like chicken with the exception of chicken.”

2. “Recapping this scene for anyone who fell asleep; car parked in the middle of the highway, all parties outside vehicle leisurely acting as if they were parked in a perfectly fine parking spot, no emergency lights activated, and me wondering, ‘WHERE ELSE IS IT OKAY TO DO THIS??????????’”

3. “I imagine ‘Not my problem’ is the motto of grandparents everywhere. I know for a fact that my dad says this to himself as he gives my 2-year-old a Tootsie Roll that is three times bigger than she is.”

4. “To get the ideas flowing,” I said to myself, ‘Christy, what would bring people to Forks?’ Three days later, I still had nothing.”

5. “I recently got asked how to tell the difference between a moose and an elk. I’m not saying this was a stupid question, but the person asked how to tell the difference between a moose and an elk.”

6. “We all have that one friend who is smart but dumb at the same time. If you don’t have that friend, you might be that friend. Rest assured, you are in good company. I’m pretty certain that I am that friend.”

7. “Three years of Spanish in high school and I successfully (only) took away that ‘sol’ translates to sun and ‘verde’ translates to green. These two words will no doubt come in handy if I should ever venture to a Spanish-speaking country. A person can never go wrong knowing how to say green sun.”

The amazing gift — The QVSA The event now known as the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction turns 51 this year. At its inception it was known as the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Fund. It began with a group of Forks residents looking for a way to help Forks High School graduates achieve higher educational goals.

The original organizers felt that due to the remoteness of the community the cost of college or trade school education was not always within reach for many Forks families.

So a group of local business people and educators wanted to find a way to help, and in a way give back for the success and achievements they had experienced living in the West End. In February 1964, the first meeting of the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Fund Corporation and various contract logging operators was held at the Vagabond cafe to begin the drive among local industries for scholarship funds. Robert Rosmond, chairman for industrial contacts, conducted the meeting. It was decided that any young person with “promise and need” would get a scholarship; the immediate goal was $1,000.

The kick-off dinner was at the Russ Thomas home.

In 1966, a “Forks Style Banquet” was held at the Congregational Church featuring steelhead, elk, Swedish meatballs

and Swiss steak; admission was by donation at the door, by this time the organization had raised a total of $6,300 and awarded 39 scholarships.

In 1968, the scholarship fund got a boost from radio.

Radio station owner Gordon Otos held an impromptu auction on the local radio station, KVAC, selling off coowner Bruce Elliott’s birthday gifts on the air. As the gifts ran out locals started donating more items and more people started bidding. It went on for several days and the only reason they stopped was because they got tired.

Over the years the dinners were phased out and the radio format took over. By 1980, the event had outgrown the radio station and Northwestern National Bank offered up its lobby as a place to hold the auction and still broadcast it live over the radio.

Eventually the event outgrew Northwestern Bank and was moved to the Bank of America building. In 1987, the Olympic Correction Center inmates began creating items for the auction. Over the years those items have contributed thousands of dollars to the fund.

In the mid-1990s the local cable company put the event on the local advertising channel 19. The annual two-day event began taking in $20,000, then

preparing for the big night with the entertainment, food and photographers are there serving food, giving out prizes and at the end of the night (4 a.m.) each graduate is given gifts that help to get them setup for their future.

As a past community member, parent and volunteer I take great offense to your letter. We don’t tolerate illegal substance use every night of the year, except graduation as you state.

Thank you to all of the community of Forks for all of your support over the years. It has always been appreciated.

Secondly, the Senior Safe Night party is a party the parents work on for a good 10 months with fundraising, concessions, Senior Parent Café, selling wood, and it’s all to give our kids a fun, safe night before they head off to school, military, work or whatever they choose.

We have not even come close to the amount raised for the auction as you state.

The parents who have spent their time organizing and

In 2008, the auction took in over $71,000 and a basket donated by Muriel Huggins brought in $3,100.

After many successful years in the Bank of America building, the event was moved in 2012 to the Forks High School Commons, although not directly affiliated with the school the event is now hosted by FHS, with the Senior Parents providing concessions for hungry bidders, with those proceeds going to “Senior Safe Night.”

Thanks to the original board members Robert Rosmond, Harvey King, Russ Thomas, Larry Wagg, A. Nordman, Mrs. Herman Waters and Mrs. George Thompson, since its inception the QVSA has raised over $1 million to assist Forks grads with scholarships.

Last year’s auction beat the all time record with $77,000 plus taken in over the two-day event.

The QVSA is an event that is undefinable and speaks to the amazing heart of the community we live in! See you at the auction!

Community News FIFTH CASE OF MEASLES IN CLALLAM COUNTY CONFIRMED Laboratory testing has confirmed a fifth case of measles in Clallam County this year. The case is an adult relative of two earlier cases who was thought to be immune to measles. This latest case was exposed to one of the earlier cases during their infectious period.

A total of five cases of measles have been confirmed in Clallam County since February. The first four cases occurred among individuals who were not vaccinated against measles.

The fifth and newest case had received one dose of measles

vaccine in the 1970s. The vaccine that was in use at the time had a different formulation from the current vaccine and was less effective. The latest case had onset of rash on March 4. No people susceptible to measles had contact with this newest case during his infectious period.

Nonetheless, Clallam County Health and Human Services staff remains vigilant for additional cases in the community.

FILM FESTIVAL The River & Ocean Film Festival, hosted in conjunction with the Rainforest River & Ocean Fair and the Washington Coast Clean-up, celebrates the freshwater and marine environments on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula. Short films from the peninsula and beyond will showcase this region’s beauty and opportunities and the issues facing its aquatic habitats and human communities. Check out last year’s films.

Filmmakers everywhere are invited to submit short films relevant to the natural or human dimensions of these ecosystems. Entries can be submitted in electronic or DVD formats.

Festival screenings will start at 7 p.m April 25 in Forks. The event is sponsored by the North Pacific Coast Marine Resource Committee, Washington Sea Grant, North Pacific Coast Lead Entity, Pacific Coast Salmon Coalition, and the West Olympic Council of the Arts.

RAZOR CLAM DIGS APPROVED State shellfish managers have approved a series of razor clam digs that started March 16 on evening tides, then switches to

morning tides Saturday March 21 for four more days of digging.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildwlife approved the digs after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat.

As spring approaches, the best low tides start occurring in the morning rather than evening, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. The switch from evening to morning digs reflects that seasonal cycle.

“We are happy to be able to provide this opener to coincide with the annual Ocean Shores Razor Clam Festival,” Ayres said. “The split schedule also provides an opportunity for back-to-back digs the evening of Friday, March 20, and the morning of Saturday, March 21.”

All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available on WDFW’s website at https:// fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov and from license vendors around the state.

This is the last chance for diggers to use their 2014-2015 fishing licenses, which expire March 31, Ayres said. Beginning April 1, a 2015-2016 fishing license will be required. A list of proposed upcoming digs is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Brenda Gedlund, clothing buyer at Forks Outfitters, keeps the store stocked in the latest Seahawks-themed apparel for Forks’ faithful football fans. But, don’t be surprised if come next football season she might just try to slip in an order for a few New Orleans Saints T-shirts.

New Orleans? Why? Well, Gedlund is one proud parent as her son Joel Thomas recently was hired as the running backs coach for the Saints. Thomas, a former Port Angeles High School and University of Idaho football standout, is climbing the

coaching ladder. After more than a decade coaching in the college ranks he is making the move to the National Football League.

Thomas was a standout running back at Port Angeles High School in the early 1990s and graduated in 1992.

He remains the Vandals’ career leader with 765 rushing attempts, 3,929 rushing yards and 51 rushing touchdowns.

After his playing days, he was co-offensive coordinator at Idaho under head coach Nick Holt from 2004-2005.

He has coached running backs at Louisville (2002-

Recalling a scene from a Laurel & Hardy movie, I was thankful not to find any of the following hand luggage bag items: suit, top hat, alarm clock, hot water bottle, accordion, pajamas and the like.

Instead, I was relieved to at least find a mummy-type space blanket, wool stocking cap, an extra pair of socks, 154 degree 12-hour adhesive body warmer, 9 foot by 12 foot half mil plastic tarp and a dry-plus (sleeping bag) over-sack. This last item is the size of a rolled up pair of socks when compacted.

After first putting the plastic sheet on the lumpy ground, the rest of my gear was spread out on top. Having previously located the only tolerable place to lie on, I now laid the over-sack there.

Essential items like a flare gun were placed close at

hand — though if one could not see a target, what use was there in having such a weapon?

The next step was the removal of both a pair of soggy hiking boots along with their smelly socks, replacing these items with a dry pair of socks. While still fully clothed entirely in gear made up of polyester — pants also were dry-plus — I now slipped into the over-bag. In addition, wearing the stocking cap here would prevent a major heat loss during cold nights from the top of one’s head — up to 73 percent of body temperature.

However, despite these preparations tactics, sleep was fleeting. As I attempted to find a comfortable spot for my hip bone, I was nevertheless still pleased that the night’s air was a bit cool, for if it had been otherwise, the forecasted rain would surely be at hand.

Thus with this rain threat not now being eminent, I took advantage of a starry sky, with a hope that while

counting them sleep would visit me. However, when the count approached four digit numbers, this idea began to appear fruitless.

If sleep was to be so evasive, a better use of time was called for. During the course of this more beneficial tact, a sudden period of introspection engulfed me. At this point, the following words attributed to the cartoon character Charlie Brown, came to mind: “Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, ‘Where have I gone wrong.’

Then a voice says to me, ‘This is going to take more than one night.’”

At some point between Jan. 31 and Feb. 4, a devoted Seahawks fan repainted the huge rock located at the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and DNR road FR-G-1000.

Whoever you are, thank you very much for the more authentic Seahawks colors.

History from the pages of the Forks Forum: March 20, 1947

Editor’s note: On March 17, 1947, Clallam Bay suffered a terrible fire. With recent pleas from volunteer fire departments all across the West End, it is a good time to think about how important these volunteers are and also to ask that individuals think about volunteering if they can.

Clallam Bay fire destroys many businesses; one dead One man is dead and more than half the business district of Clallam Bay is completely destroyed as the result of an early morning fire Monday. Paul Sine, age 44, died Monday afternoon in Davidson Hospital in Port Angeles after sustaining severe burns.

Businesses housed in the buildings on the waterfront side of the street which burned to the ground included a theater, a taxi office, drug store, hardware store, barber shop, tavern, meat market and cold storage lockers, hotel, and restaurant and a residence.

A number of other business houses which lined the south side

of the street and undetermined number of homes were damaged by the smoke, flames, intense heat or sustained broken windows from the huge dynamite blast.

Some buildings were even rocked off their foundations by the blast.

FIRE STARTS IN VACANT BUILDING Origin of the blaze was in a vacant building near the dock and behind Whit’s Café which was filled with sawdust and excelsior. It is believed that Mr. Sine went to sleep in the cabin and his lighted cigarette touched off the flammable material.

Jean Fisk, accompanied by her two cousins from Shelton, who was returning to her home in Clallam Bay, first sighted the fire about 3:30 a.m. Miss Fisk and her companions went into the Clallam Bay Hotel and roused the sleeping guests who fled to the street, many clad only in their night clothes, and spread the alarm.

Had it not been for the quick thinking of Miss Fisk and her companions, no doubt a number would have perished in the hotel.

Mrs. Loretta Bingston, veteran operator and manager of

the Clallam Bay exchange of the Peninsula Telephone and Telegraph Company, is credited with organizing help to come to Clallam Bay to help fight the fire.

Mrs. Bingston was compelled to work fast as shortly after the fire broke out, she was without telephone communication.

USE DYNAMITE Since the town of Clallam Bay is without firefighting equipment of any sort, it was necessary to resort to using dynamite to keep the fire from spreading to the south side of the business district.

Three different dynamite charges in all were set off. The last and largest set off in the theater was credited with stopping the fire spread. However, the severe concussion incited by the charge did considerable damage to standing stores and residences; broke an untold amount of windows and rocked buildings off their foundations.

Eye witnesses said that lumber, glass, telephone and light wires were literally flying across the street.

Electricity was off at 4:20 a.m. and had not been restored late Monday afternoon.

and Tel. Co. had a telephone line in working condition shortly before 5 o’clock.

It was estimated that the fire was brought under control at 6:30.

Had there been the usual heavy wind blowing it is doubtful that any portion of the town would have been saved.

Another casualty of the disaster was Mrs. Clyde Maneval who fell and broke her arm while trying to escape the dynamite blast!

Damage was estimated at about $100,000 and very little of this amount is covered by insurance since the rate in Clallam Bay is prohibitive.

The largest single loser is T.J. Fitzpatrick who owned most of the buildings in which the businesses were and operated the hotel and tavern.

Harry Lefler, who moved from Forks just recently to open the Clallam Bay Supply only last Saturday, lost heavily and it is not known whether his stock was insured. Almost his complete stock was destroyed as was household furniture stored upstairs in the building.

The following is a list of the businesses destroyed: Clallam Bay Taxi, Borde Drug, Clallam Bay Supply, Dr R. V.

Friedrich Dentist, Clallam Bay Tavern, Clallam Bay Hotel, Mitchell’s Meat Market, Whit’s Café, Clallam Bay Barber Shop and Laura Richards’ home.

Businesses damaged: Murray Mercantile, had stock damaged, building scorched, windows damaged by the explosions. Peninsula Telephone and Telegraph building, concrete block loosened and both doors blown off.

The Pete Lacich Tavern had broken windows and other minor damage. A freak incident was a piece of wood shaped like an arrow hurled through a broken window and stuck in to a glass framed picture of a prize fighter.

Many windows in other businesses and houses were also broken.

THOSE WHO ANSWERED THE CALL It is estimated about 500 persons were on hand to fight the blaze.

The Forestry Service at Tyee were the first to arrive on the scene with firefighting equipment. They made the trip to Clallam Bay in record time. Others included Hoko Camp, Rayonier and Crown Zellerbach all of whom, sent equipment.
