he spring sports season is underway at Oak Harbor High School, and we currently have over 330 students participating in one of the eight programs we offer in the spring. Participating in school-based athletics provides students the opportunity to try activities that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Students have the opportunity to improve their self-esteem, problem solving skills, social competence, academic achievement and overall physical fitness.

In addition, it provides a positive environment where students have the opportunity to participate in positive activities supervised by adults. Student athletes have the opportunity to represent their school and community that may not be afforded them otherwise. The Oak Harbor community is an integral part of OHHS being able to offer the school-based athletics that we do. Through the levy we have been able to reinstate programs and hire more coaches to work with these students. We have the opportunity to provide a high level of competition -- not only within our league but also at larger events that draw very talented participants at facilities that are of high quality. This year we were able to reduce the athletic fees students pay, and we also continue to receive financial support from the Oak Harbor Athletic Boosters. Without all of this support, the benefits received from school-based athletics would not be afforded to many students.
