Construction to begin on $28M Camp Murray National Guard post Image Courtesy Washington National Guard The Washington National Guard will hold a ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday to mark the beginning of construction of the Pierce County Readiness Center (pictured) at the Camp Murray military base in Tacoma. According to Washington National Guard officials, the 81,000-square-foot, $28 million facility will offer Washington National Guard members from multiple units the opportunity to perform their full-time and traditional duties, including critical training to help prepare for state and national disasters. The new building will also feature special purpose and administration areas, an assembly hall, locker rooms and shower areas, and support functions associated with the facility. Absher Construction Company and Tetra Tech are expected to complete the project by July 2016. The Pierce County Readiness Center aims to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver environmental rating standards. The new facility replaces the former Tacoma Armory, a 106-year-old landmark building located at 715 S. 11th St., which was sold to downtown Tacoma developer Fred Roberson for $950,000 two years ago.
