Pacific City Council bans all marijuana business in city

The Pacific City Council answered the question of what to do with marijuana business in the city this past week, voting to put the kibosh on recreational and medical pot stores, processors and producers.

At its Jan. 26 regular scheduled meeting, the council waded through five separate ordinances, voting to nix the sale of medical marijuana and prohibit any future growing, processing and selling of recreational pot.

The council opened up by voting unaniKave mously to extend an interim zoning moratorium on pot businesses. The emergency moratorium makes sure there is no gap between the expiration of the old moratorium and the implementation of Ordinance 2015-1891, which bans any recreational business, and Ordinance 2014-1872, which prohibits medical marijuana dispensaries and collective gardens.

The council voted 4-3 on 2015-1891, with Councilmembers John Jones, Clint Steiger, Tren Walker and Katie Garberding all voting to ban recreational pot businesses and Vic Kave, Stacey Oliveira and Josh Putnam [ more PACIFIC page 7 ]

Federal funds boost programs for kids

Deep Dive 3, that’s what they call it.

At first the phrase strikes the ear like some sort of rescue operation for a troubled sub-

marine, or maybe a salvage operation for a long-submerged pirate ship, laden with booty.

Who knows but that at some point before last week, the phrase may have struck King County Executive Dow Constantine’s ear in just that way.

Teen finds support to build a better life

Life got complicated, frustrating, and deeply depressing for Kaylynn Bartro.

At her lowest moment, the confused girl thought about killing herself.

“I just laid out knives across

the bed,” Bartro recalled. “It was like pick and choose. But I didn’t go through with it. More than anything, I didn’t want anybody else to blame themselves for it. … I didn’t want my little brother to find me.”

Problems she had with her unsupportive, absent father only dumped fuel into her

angry, violent moods.

All seemed hopeless – until kind hands picked her up.

Needing professional help, Bartro got it from staff at Auburn Youth Resources (AYR), a mental health counseling, substance abuse counseling, youth and young adult residential center serving South

King County.

Reluctant at first, Bartro in time became more comfortable with AYR staff, and after four years of participating in the AYR mental health program, which treats 500 to 600 kids in Auburn schools each year, Bartro got her once fragile life back together.

“Life picked up … (the treatment program) affected my life dramatically,” Bartro said.

Her guiding star is Elizabeth Shepherd, a youth and family therapist at AYR, who helped Bartro find and build her selfesteem – one brick at a time.

“Ultimately, therapy is about handling the anger … it’s about getting comfortable with feelings underneath that,” Shepherd said. “For her, it was about learning to love herself.”

Bartro’s disposition turned sunny, and her social skills improved.

“Kaylynn has come a long way, and I’m exceptionally proud of her,” Shepherd said.

Bartro credits many people for her transformation, but singles out Shepherd.

“I saw her, and it was like the light,” Bartro said. “It may sound cheesy, but Elizabeth is always the light. … She’s the light at the end of the tunnel.

She’s the main reason that I’m still here.”

Surrounded by a large family and friends, the 17-year-old girl today has many interests.

She enjoys studying foreign languages – especially Asian languages – and working on computers. Good at math, she is especially skilled at accounting.

Once bullied at school, Bartro has turned into a confident, enthusiastic young woman, with a plan. She is on schedule to graduate with honors in June and plans to go to college. A career in social work beckons.

“Now she’s ready to take wing a little bit into the future,” Shepherd said. “We’re proud of her.”

City makes changes to water shutoff notification rules

Too much work, takes too much time.

To be specific, going out and placing notices of approaching water service termination on doors of homes whose residents haven’t paid their utility charges.

These are among the reasons the City of Auburn has cited for changing the way it notifies property owners that their water service is about to be turned off and placing liens on their property.

In the main, the new rules extend the time water service customers have to pay up, as follows: • Payment for water service charges are due and payable to the

In early 2013, Backus explained, the City switched from Auburn Municipal Court to contracting with King County District Court, and thereafter, began to show a significant decrease in the number of Auburn inmates housed.

“It does not mean we didn’t book anyone, or that they weren’t convicted of anything,” Backus said. “It’s just a different booking philosophy and sen-

The mailings will go to the owner of record and the occupant of the premises.

Valley Regional Fire Department personnel surround a bicyclist injured in a mid-afternoon collision Monday with a truck on A Street Southeast, south of Safeway. Witnesses told Auburn Police that the cyclist, described only as a 35-year-old man, had been northbound on A Street Southeast at about 3:40 p.m. when he hit the passenger side of the eastbound truck.

Witnesses told police that the truck had the green light and that the cyclist blew through a red light and hit the vehicle, knocking out a passenger-side window. A despicable thief of U.S. flags, or perhaps hordes of them, is on the loose.

Within the last month, five American flags were stolen in front of houses at Rio Verde Home Park in north Auburn.

Officers and members of Auburn’s VFW Post 1741 are angry and appalled at this thievery and vandalism activity. As veterans, we have laid our lives on the line for this flag. It’s dear to our hearts. For us, this thievery is a shameless and hateful act. It’s tantamount to dishonoring America’s flag.

Our post sponsors a community project, called “Flags for Food Banks.” And if any of our VFW comrades sees a worn or tattered U.S. flag in the community, the owner is contacted, and a 3-by-5 flag is replaced for free. The recipient of the new flag is then asked to make a conscionable donation to the local food bank.

Unusual sighting in the sky spurs intrigue, wackiness, relief Last week I wrote a story for the Journal of San Juan Islands, and I think I finally found some fans.

I wrote about a UFO sighting in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. It’s the first UFO story I have ever written and, amazingly, no one is calling demanding I be replaced

with a well-dressed mannequin draped in apparent hair.

I received a call from Jim Dunn late in the day on Jan. 19, while I was sending pages for the Journal. He told me he had a story he wanted to discuss. I told him I was sweating a deadline and asked if we could talk the next day.

Tail wagging and nose sniffing at full throttle, Amy Trotter is an excitable, growing bundle of energy.

She likes to play and take on a good challenge.

Like the obstacle course at the Family Dog Training Center in Kent. Plenty of hoops, slalom poles and tunnel runs to negotiate.

“She’s very busy, active … she’s really bonded with me,” said her owner, Lori Stock, of Frederickson. “She has a real work ethic. She loves to learn new things.

“I don’t want to put down other dogs … but she’s been the best dog I’ve ever had.”

Amy is by no means a canine, she’s a 4-monthold part-Juliana, part-Kune Kune miniature pig, the latest star attraction at Kathy Lang’s training center.

Invited to join furry, frothing classmates in a six-week puppy manners class last fall, Amy immediately took flight. She proved a quick study, learning many behaviors befitting a dog but performed to the tune of steady grunts and oinks.

“What’s interesting about Amy is she does not get distracted as easily as dogs do,” said Lang, the center’s owner and lead instructor who has worked with animals since 1977.

“She’s much more focused on the work, which surprises me. I mean, she’s the most focused animal I’ve seen at 4 months of age.

There was something about the conversation that interested me, and I hoped he would call.

Fortunately, Dunn called back the next day. At first I thought he wanted to talk about a problem in his neighborhood or with some goofball city rule. It took me a moment to get it through my thick fog that he was talking about a UFO sighting.

Dunn said on Jan. 15 at about 6:15

p.m. he saw three orange lights over the main street of Friday Harbor – Spring Street.

He thought at first it was a plane making a very low approach to land at the town’s airport, which he thought was odd. Next, he assumed the lights must be a helicopter or a drone, but there was something [ more BOX page 6 ]

While an agile Amy can hold her own at mock dog shows, she cannot officially compete against other canines. Instead, Amy will occupy a different stage, starring in a skit in the “demo ring” at the Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show on March 7-8 at CenturyLink Field Event Center.

Amy is still developing – weighing 30 pounds now, 55 when fully grown – and learning.

Pigs are smart animals, according to researchers. They are perhaps the smartest, cleanest domestic animals known – more so than cats and dogs, according to some experts.

Researchers have presented evidence that domestic pigs can quickly learn how mirrors work and will use their understanding of reflected images to scope out their surroundings and find their food. They also have been trained to move a cursor on a video screen with their snouts.

Pigs – as Amy has demonstrated – are among the quickest of animals to learn a new routine. They do tricks, like jumping through hoops, bowing and standing, spinning and rolling.

“They’re just like another breed of dog,” Lang said. “There are more similarities than differences.”

Amy isn’t the only pet in the household of Stock and her husband, Jim. The couple own five dogs – two Irish setters, two toy fox terriers and a Chihuahua.

“At home it’s like having a toddler, not a puppy. She’s more mature,” Stock said.

Stock, a longtime dog owner, says this is her first pig. Her interest was sparked by a former co-worker who owned a pot-bellied pig. Amy was born on a nearby farm, one of a dozen in the litter, each named after a birthstone. Thus Amy, short for

Now, I have to admit this is just plain fun. Few stories I do can be described in that manner.

The intriguing part of the news business is I never know what is coming around the corner. One day someone is calling for my well-groomed scalp, and the next it is an alien doing the moonwalk.

While driving back from the Islands, I began considering the deep implications of UFOs, aliens, and why I was having so much fun with outer space (fun and me just can’t be right).

A ferry ride that probably lasted too long allowed me to imagine a TV world in the not-too-distant future where the top Super Bowl ad might be for the website, “FindYourAlienGirlfriend. com.”

Another interesting point was, that the day Dunn came to the office, CNN published a story about the Air Force UFO files being released. The story stated John Greenewald had put all the documents together and posted it to his website, “Project Blue Book Collection.”

I haven’t had a chance to spend any time on the site, but I plan to, and I intend to keep in touch with Dunn.

After Super Bowl XLIX, it might be a good time for Seahawk fans to look to the sky for some relief.

“It was three orange lights moving independently,” Dunn said. “At first, I rationalized it was a drone, but they were moving too rapidly.”

Once I finally realized this was a different kind of story, I had to decide if Dunn was a regular guy, not a wacko like me.

He came to the office in Friday Harbor and we spent some time talking. He was a very sensible, intelligent man. Dunn is a retired architect and private pilot, which meant he had a pretty good understanding of the way an aircraft would approach the airport.

That is when the story got interesting. Dunn had contacted air traffic control at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The controller told Dunn there was a helicopter listed as being in the area, but it was 45 minutes after the sighting, Dunn said.

Dunn contacted Peter Davenport, director of the National UFO Reporting Center, who suggested he contact the local media (that’s me) to see if anyone else saw the light.

After The Journal published the story, several people sent emails about the same lights.

THE SOUND CITY ASSOCIATION (SCA) Board has elected Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus to serve as its 2015 vice president.

The SCA represents 36 cities in King County and provides a regional voice for nearly one million people.

“Mayor Backus’ knowledge of local and regional issues and enthusiasm for bringing people together to solve problems makes her the perfect leader to serve as our new vice president,” said SCA Executive Director Deanna Dawson.

“SCA had tremendous success in 2014 addressing our region’s top issues, including fiscal responsibility, transportation, community development and environmental sustainability,” Backus said. “For example, SCA was instrumental in efforts to keep public health clinics open in Auburn and throughout the county. I look forward to building on our record of success of being a powerful regional voice for cities such as Auburn.”

Thanks to the grant, Sexton said, Neighborhood House has been collaborating with Dick Scobee Principal Adam Couch and his team on curriculum. The grant, he said, has allowed staff at Neighborhood House to help kids with homework and with projects and to improve their English, which is critically important in a largely immigrant community.

Sexton said the grant has even helped pay for some part-time staff.

Vicki Alonzo, public information officer for the Auburn School District, told Constantine that the grant has provided Dick Scobee, which has a large Marshallese population, to hire a Marshallesespeaking individual.

“This person goes into homes and helps kids and teaches parents how to engage with their kids. It will pay dividends down the road,” Alonzo said.

“I would prefer not to adopt any permanent regulations, pro or con, until we see what this session of the Legislature does,” he said.

Putnam was the lone vote against banning medical marijuana, citing his wish to wait until the Legislature had weighed in on the issue this session, adding that it “was premature to adopt any permanent legislation on this issue.”

Jones disagreed: “We can pass this now, but in the future as the state becomes more attuned to the requirements of medical dispensaries and collective gardens, we can then come back and make modifications.”

Pacific has four medical marijuana businesses operating in the city. The new regulations will likely prompt attempts to close those businesses, which are now illegal according to city code.

The City hosted a public meeting on Jan. 20 for comments from residents on the issue of marijuana businesses.

I checked the local utilities in the area. Gas is the same. Electric maybe 35 percent cheaper, water, sewer and garbage are half of Auburn rates.

I am one of the lucky ones. I can leave in a few years. Less traffic and cheap living are looking pretty good.

Young minds test skills in robotics showdown at ShoWare

Inside, it’s a nerd’s paradise.

Hundreds of students gather around scores of tables, all loaded with machine parts for the robots built to take home the coveted Washington FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) title at Kent’s ShoWare Center.

In the middle of the pits, a practice area allows the teams to finish fine-tuning the 18-inch-by18-inch robots, preparing them to compete in Cascade Effect, this year’s challenge.

Wendy Liang, an 18-year-old Hazen senior and co-founder of Hazen 9693 Team Scarab, explained the rules.

“Each squad consists of a group of seventh- to 12th-graders,” she said. “The field is 15 foot by 15 foot, split in half with red and blue sides.”

On each side an alliance of three teams operates its robots in cooperation with the others.

“There are three parts,” Liang said. “The first is autonomous for 30 seconds. The robots do what they’re programmed to.”

At this past Saturday’s competition, Roarbotics earned the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award and punched its ticket to the FTC West Super-Regional Championship on March 27-29 at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, Calif.

Also moving on is Auburn’s 7364 Mindbot Maniacs team, which participated in the finals as part of an alliance.

For Team Scarab from Hazen, the results weren’t as good, but that’s not why they’re there anyway.

“Our team just started this year. We’re a rookie team,” she said. “The last two years we were preparing for the competition with Labview and learning how to build with simple robots from the manual.”

“I do it because ever since I was really little I was interested in this STEM field in general,” she said.

“In my sophomore year I took AP computer science, learned how to program and become very interested in computer programming.”

Liang said she hopes to build on the things learned with FIRST by majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Washington.

“FIRST is known as the sport for the mind, which is how the founder puts it,” Lommen said.

“People can get together and build robots. There is a lot to it. There

are business management skills, there are mechanical skills, and there are a lot of teamwork skills you get.”

Lommen said he got started in FIRST when he was in middle school.

“I saw a robotics program was starting at Rainier (Middle School),” he said. “I thought it sounded really cool and I wanted to get involved with that. It’s helped develop my skills as a programmer and as a leader. I have contacts in the community, and I can contact them and talk to them professionally. It basically taught me how to run a business.”

Lommen said Roarbotics meets every day after school until 5 p.m.

“At least 15 hours a week,” he said. “It’s that rewarding. We all have a place on the team, and it’s more intimate than sports are. You can learn, you can do what you want, and you don’t have coaches yelling at you.”

Lommen added that the robotics programs are currently the biggest program at Auburn Mountainview.

“It’s bigger than football, than basketball, than all that,” he said.

The No. 10-ranked Auburn Mountainview boys basketball team defeated South Puget Sound League 3A foe Peninsula 52-46 on Tuesday, wrapping up the program’s first league title.

Knotted at 39-39 after three quarters, the Lions (121 league, 16-3 overall) held the Seahawks (11-2, 14-5) to just seven fourth quarter points putting away the game and clinching the title at Auburn Mountainview.

Ryan Lacey led the way with a game-high 20 points for the Lions, with junior Tristan Miguel adding 13.

Ki’Jan Weisinger and Robbie Wilson had eight points apiece, and Elijah Johnson contributed three points.

With the season closing down and the Trojans in the hunt for a postseason berth, the 73-48 Auburn win was important.

significant in a broader historical context — it marked the final match ever to be waged in the 35-year-old Auburn gymnasium.

Track opens for training FOR THE REPORTER

Nearly 200 horses were on the grounds Monday as Thoroughbreds began training for the 2015 season at Emerald Downs.

The Auburn Riverside squad won the 2A/3A Small category. The Ravens posted

70.5 points to beat Ballard’s 68.5-point performance.

In the 3A/4A Non-Tumbling Super-Large competition, Auburn finished second with 55 points.

Kentwood – Black took first place in the division with a 68.5 points.

This is the first time all three schools have placed at state.

“That old gym was something special because it was so small; 400 people would fill that place up,” Cummings recalled. “It was beloved by everybody from Auburn who ever played basketball. We called it The Pit, and it was a pretty special place.”

It certainly was that for Rick Stafford, who played basketball for Auburn and graduated in 1966.

“The old gym, The Pit, was really small,” he said. “When I played, Auburn was the only high school in town, so they had seats behind the backboards. They had a separate line on the end line, a dotted line, so the person taking the ball out of bounds could have his feet out of bounds.

“When they had games, everybody turned out,” Stafford said. “It was a matter of town pride. In the middle of the south wall there was the entrance. There would be people lined up in the hallway outside looking in. It was always a town event and really supported by the town.”

By the late 1970s, however, the size of the old gym was a serious problem, so the district built a new one.

Although the new gym, the one now in use, lacked the intimacy of The Pit, it made up for it in features, Cummings said.

“The new gym, for a new coach, it was almost as if, if you wanted to design a place just to play basket-

ball, it was it,” Cummings said.

“We had three courts, at the time the school was 10th through 12th, so everybody had their own court.

There were so many baskets that you could run different drills at.

And it become a great place that got to be as tough to win in as the The Pit was. That gym (the current one) was a pretty special place, too.”

For Stafford, who stayed in Auburn to raise a family after graduation, the current gym was a second home during the 1990s and 2000s.

Stafford admits he doesn’t get many chances these days to make it to the gym — he spends most of his time traveling to Utah and Arizona to watch some of his 33 grandchildren play high school basketball — but says it still “breaks my heart that

Cummings agreed: “It’s hard to think of it being gone,” Cummings said. “There were so many great experiences there.

And it just felt so comfortable to me. Whenever I walked in, I felt comfortable. Many nights I would just go to the gym, come in when I needed to think, or draw up a play or some work for school.”

Make no mistake about it, however, the new gym, which is scheduled to open in August of this year, will be an improvement over the current one.

Jeff Grose, executive director of capital projects for the Auburn School District, said the new facility is going to be about 600 square feet larger than the current gym. Plans call for exterior windows to allow natural light into the gym, and an energy efficient lighting system.

Improved access to locker rooms and an upgraded lobby with elevator access to a second-floor auxiliary gym are among the other features.

Most important, though, the history of Auburn athletics will be bestowed on the new gym, courtesy of the school’s many championship banners.

Even the Dick Scobee mural will be replicated in the new gym.

Besides that, the real reason The Pit, the current gym, and the new gym are, or will be, special is because of the people, Cummings said.

“I had the privilege of coaching good players, great players, but more importantly, special people,” he said. “Those great students made the place special.”

Porter fuels Auburn Mountainview’s all city gymnastics win

Auburn Mountainview’s Kayla Porter captured the all-around with a 37.1-point total at this past Wednesday’s all-Auburn gymnastics meet at Auburn Riverside High School.

Porter’s efforts lifted the Lions to the team win with 149 points. Mount Rainier finished second with 143, Auburn was third with 141, and Auburn Riverside fourth with 139 points.

Porter finished first in three events – the vault with a score of 9.3, the beam (9.5) and the bars (9.2) – and was tied for third in the floor exercise with a 9.1 performance.

Auburn Riverside’s Tayler Johnston was second all-around (34.05).

Mount Rainier’s Ava Welch – who was third in the all-around (33.35) – grabbed first in the floor exercise (9.35).

The Auburn Mountainview boys swim and dive team made history this past weekend, taking first place at the South Puget Sound League 3A Championship meet at Lakes High School in Lakewood.

The Lions posted 552 points to edge rival Enumclaw, which finished with 542 points.

In addition to the team’s first-place finish, Auburn Mountainview set three school records.

Luke Lavine topped his own 50-meter freestyle record twice over the weekend, posting a record-breaking 22.13-second finish last Friday before breaking it with a 21.81 last Saturday.

Lavine also lowered Cameron Lindsay’s school record in the 100 free with a 49.22.

The school’s 200 free relay team also broke its year-old record with Lavine, Owen Lempert, Tyler Arnold and Valen Hill posting a winning time 1:32.59 in the finals.

Lavine and the 200 free relay team now prepares for the West Central District III Swim Meet on Feb. 13 at the

Hazen Pool in Renton.

Also moving on to the district meet is the Lions’ 200 medley relay team of Arnold, Lempert, Lavine and Chase Murphy, which finished first with a 1:45.92.

Individually, Lempert won the 100 breast in 1:03.73.

Arnold qualified for district in the 200 free with a third-place 2:01.81, and in the 100 back with a secondplace 59.35.

Hill placed seventh in the 50 free with a 24.47, good enough for a district berth, and Lempert punched his ticket to district in the 200 individual medley with a first-place 2:08.81.

Murphy finished third in the 100 butterfly with a district-qualifying 1:02.46.

Tyler Scheff earned a district nod with a seventhplace finish in the 100 back with a 1:05.50.

Adam Rhoades also qualified for districts with an eighth-place 1:13.43.

The Lions’ 400 free relay team also moves on to district with Hill, Murphy, Ian Portmann and Truman Sulewski posting a thirdplace 3:44.29.

Max Barton rounded out Auburn Mountainview’s district qualifiers with a ninthplace, 281.30-point finish in the diving competition.

Auburn Riverside, which finished seventh in the team competition with 191 points, will compete in two relay events, the diving competition and two individual events at the district meet.

Senior Tye Dutcher led the way with a first-place, 59.04 time in the 100 back and fourth in the 100 fly with a 1:02.56. Dutcher also contributed to the 200 medley relay team’s 2:02.07, qualifying for district. Also on the team are Mario Pimental-Ramirez, Daniel Godfrey and Armando Valencia.

The Ravens’ 200 free relay team – Dutcher, Godfrey, Valencia and PimentalRamirez – also moves on with a sixth-place, 1:47.43 time.

Auburn Riverside diver Garrett Rosin notched a fourth-place, 282.95 finish.

Auburn finished eighth in the 200 medley with Jake McInerny, Diego Del Ray, Nikia Caldwell and John Villandry notching a 2:10.88.

The City of Auburn and Auburn Downtown Association (ADA) recently presented the newest Streetscape at One East Main Street, featuring the artwork of Michael Taskey through April. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Salmon: Pacific Keystoneâ&#x20AC;? is a site specific installation inspired by the salmon and rivers running through Auburn.

In the Pacific Northwest the salmon is a keystone species supporting wildlife. The bodies of salmon represent a transfer of nutrients from the ocean to the forest ecosystem.

Land animals act as ecosystem engineers, capturing salmon and carrying them into adjacent wooded areas. There they deposit nutrientrich scatterings to the riparian woodlands. This nutritional transfer is vitally important to our community and was the inspiration for Taskeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work.

Taskey is a talented, Auburn-based artist known primarily for his natural

wood carvings. Art has always been a part of Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, but was put on hold when he had children.

He later rediscovered his artistic passion while running the Art Docent program at his childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elementary school. Using power tools and hand tools, he transforms wood, metal, plastic, paper, fabric and other solids into sculptural pieces.

His pieces are inspired by the natural world and local histories. His work has been featured in the Auburn Art Walk, Storefronts Auburn-Artists Residency, Zolaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CafĂŠ, Auburnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pianos on Parade, and Interurban Center for the Arts.

Streetscapes Auburn is a City program in collaboration with the ADA. It is a program that seeks to enliven and activate otherwise empty storefront windows in Auburnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Historic Downtown by providing temporary space to artists, creative businesses, organizations and community groups.

Kathleen Marie Vaughn took her journey home on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

She was born in Cheyenne,WY, on July 10, 1952, to Adam and Eva Lopez. She was married to Dennis W.Vaughn in June, 1970. Kathleen moved from Cheyenne, WY in 1965 to Kent, WA and lived there until moving to Oregon in 1991.

A woman known for her strong spirit, her grace and immense compassion, she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.We take comfort in knowing her spirit is with us, and watching and protecting us all.

She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend and warrior. She is survived by Dennis Vaughn of Glide, OR; her children Shelby and Jason Maddox, Randy and Napua Vaughn, Danielle and Vincent Remer; her grandchildren Tyler, Mercy, Cody, Israell, Ezrah, Jonas and Elliot; and great-granddaughter Iris.

Martin E. Hertlein Martin E. Hertlein passed away peacefully on January 25, 2015, at the age of 56, after a very courageous battle with leukemia.

A graduate of Auburn High School, Marty married the love of his life and started a family in Bonney Lake. In 2005, he and his wife moved to Puyallup where he spent his free time working in his beloved garage, traveling with his family, and enjoying life with his dogs. Marty worked in the printing industry for over 30 years, coached and played many sports, and enjoyed the outdoors. He was also an avid Seahawks fan.

Marty is survived by his wife Peggy, daughters Lacey Hertlein of Tacoma, and Kimberly Brock of Burien, their spouses, and four grandchildren, Phoenix, Quentin, Ilyana, and Jameson. He is also survived by his siblings Forest Hertlein, Daniel Hertlein, and Bonnie Hertlein-Swetman.
