Jenna Lisenby isn’t shy but it took her a few minutes to relax with lights, hightech microphones and a professional video camera trained on her.

Once the physical therapist started talking, then the passion for her work emerged. She works mostly with children: toddlers who can’t yet walk, children with orthopedic problems, teenagers with sports injuries.

She believes in working closely with patients. As she put it: “It’s not, ‘Take two of these and I’ll see you in a couple of weeks.’”

Lisenby is one of hundreds of Everett Clinic providers being professionally filmed in an effort to give patients a chance to get to know their doctors before they walk through the door.

“There’s a personal connection that takes place,” she said. “We know that if you like your practitioner, you’re more likely going to stay and agree with what they have to say.”

More hospitals are trying it, and the clinic is on the leading edge of that trend, investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in the videos of all its 500 providers.

So far, they’ve filmed 450.

Lisenby liked the idea so much that when she needed hip surgery she used videos as one tool for choosing the right surgeon.

She checked credentials and work history, but the clincher was watching a video of doctors talk about their work.

She knew she had the right one before she walked into the exam room.

“When the physician walks in, you almost feel like you already know them,” Lisenby said.

The Everett Clinic films two videos with each provider. The first is a biographical video so that patients can get to know the provider before the first visit.

The second is an educational topic that gives a little information on a commonly asked health and wellness topic.

For her second video, Lisenby chose to talk about a subject she’s passionate about as a coach and soccer player: a knee injury in young girls called Patella femoral. She sees it all the time in young female athletes.

It’s caused by weakness in the hip and tightness of the thigh muscles. As a physical therapist, Lisenby knows that a few changes in how coaches warm up their athletes can help prevent this injury.

Seeing and hearing a doctor speak about their practice gives people a better sense and connection to the provider than simply reading a biography online, said Kim Griffis.

Her company Northwest Video Edge filmed Lisenby’s videos in November and many others for the clinic. When she’s interviewing the doctors, Griffis said she can see the passion providers have for their jobs coming through. And that’s something patients can see, too.

“It helps people feel more comfortable,” she said.

The Everett Clinic spends about $1,000 per video and the clinic gets about 5,000 hits a month total on its YouTube channel.

Patients say they appreciate the videos, and one provider told clinic officials that he saw three new patients in one week who chose him because they liked what they heard on the video, said Michele Graves, a spokeswoman for the clinic.

In addition to the videos, the clinic tries to reach patients through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Second Swift line being examined Bothell-to-Boeing route considered for popular buses

It’s the most popular route that Community Transit offers.

Every month, 125,000 people board Swift buses — about one in six Community Transit passengers — along the route that runs between Everett Station and Aurora Village in Shoreline, mostly on Highway 99.

Now, the transit agency is considering adding a second line called Swift 2 that would be between Bothell and the Boeing plant at Paine Field.

“Boeing has had a big issue with parking for a long time,” said Martin Munguia, Community Transit spokesman.

“They would certainly like to have better transit or more transit to their facility.”

A second Swift route would cross with the first one and add a key east-west route, said Mill Creek City Councilman Mike Todd, who is chairman of the Community Transit board.

“It makes an awful lot of sense,” Todd said. “The two of them working together will be awfully slick.”

For that to happen, Community Transit needs to find money to pay for the new Swift buses and stations and also pay to operate the buses. The transit agency already gets the maximum amount allowed under state law for sales tax revenue at 0.9 percent or 9 cents on every $10 purchase.

The agency plans to ask the Legislature this next session to move the maximum up to 0.3 percent higher. Then, Community Transit would need to ask the voters to approve a tax increase, Munguia said.

ernment to buy 12 Swift buses and build all the stations.

The first Swift line started five years ago on Nov. 30, 2009, and is part of a trend in transit agencies called rapid transit lines. The lines guarantee service every 15 minutes, but space out stations farther apart.

Riders must pay before they board or be left behind. Curbs and the buses are designed so that people in wheelchairs can get on and off quickly and easily.

“It is our highest ridership line,” Munguia said. “It is extremely productive. We offer service from 5 in the morning until 10 p.m.”

The Swift 2 line is tentatively planned from Canyon Park & Ride in Bothell north along the Bothell-Everett Highway to 132nd Street and then east to Paine Field. The exact locations of the stations haven’t been decided.

The new route line has a couple of advantages.

Part of the route already has what are called “business access transit lanes” where cars and trucks need to turn right, but buses can continue straight.

And the entire route is getting what is called “transit signal priority” that will allow light signals to stay green for an extra few seconds if a bus is near.

Those help the buses remain on time.

The first Swift line is about 17 miles long. The Swift 2 line is a little bit shorter

at 12 1/2 miles long.

One of the keys to the project is Community Transit has already identified a bus turnaround area near Boeing and all of the manufacturing in the area.

The property is owned by Snohomish County PUD, which has been in discussions about selling the land to Community Transit. That turnaround area could be used not only by the Swift 2 line, but other transit agencies, Todd said.

Getting voters to agree to a tax increase will be difficult, Todd said. Still drivers are getting impatient with longer and longer transit times.

“I think people are starting to get it that if you can get people on the bus you’re getting them off the roads,” Todd said.

“And we have some roads around here that are at ultimate capacity.”

Light rail is planned to extend into Snohomish County. And there has been some talk about bringing a light rail line to Paine Field. But that is years in the future, Todd said. A second Swift line could be up and running in a couple of years.

“The more I’ve heard about it and the more I’ve studied it, this would be a fantastic expansion to the system,” Todd said.

Electroimpact founder shaped company at the forefront of aerospace manufacturing

MUKILTEO — In 1983, Peter Zieve didn’t even know what a rivet looked like.

Three years later, he founded a company, Electroimpact, to sell riveting machines to aerospace companies.

It’s been a spectacular success.

Electroimpact has grown into a heavyweight in the aerospace industry, employing more than 620 people while operating on five continents.

The company sells dozens of machines to Boeing, Airbus and other aerospace manufacturers throughout the world.

The machines do everything from driving old-fashioned rivets into aluminum on assembly lines to manufacturing parts by laying up advanced composite materials.

And this has been a particularly good year for Electroimpact.

In January, the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance named the business its aerospace company of the year. In October, Electroimpact won a coveted con-

tract from Boeing to develop automated fiber placement machines for building 777X wings.

Sales continue to grow so much that Electroimpact plans to expand in the near future.

It all started with Zieve, 60, who from the beginning envisioned his company as “a haven for engineers.”

Electroimpact is atypical of many engineering and manufacturing organizations, which are often characterized by huge support staffs, rigid hierarchical structures, senior managers isolated inside plush offices, and cubicle-dwelling engineers (think Dilbert).

At Electroimpact, only a handful of employees provide administrative support, and no one has an office, including Zieve.

On a November day, he didn’t look like most CEOs either, instead resembling more of an absent-minded professor — wearing socks but no shoes, cargo pants and a gray T-shirt with “Peter Zieve” embroidered on the right chest and

Zieve’s path to world-class aerospace entrepreneur was propelled by electromagnetics, a field normally associated with systems such as radios, radars, cellphones, and antennas, not rivets.

His early desire was to apply electrical engineering technology to environmental problems, an interest sparked during high school in his native Wisconsin when he helped his mother with a project on air pollution control.

During his sophomore year as an electrical engineering major at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he heard about a professor, James R. Melcher, who was researching ways to apply electromagnetics to new areas.

Zieve found Melcher’s phone number in a faculty directory and dialed, expecting the call to be answered by an assistant or a secretary. He was shocked when the famous professor answered himself, but instead of telling Zieve to go away, Melcher commanded, “Come here now.”

Thus began a mentorship that contin-

ued through Zieve’s two MIT master’s degrees, one in electrical engineering and one in environmental engineering.

In 1977, Zieve helped to found EFB Inc., a Boston company dedicated to applying a technology called “Electrified Filter Bed” to reduce pollution particles in the atmosphere.

Zieve had lost interest in air pollution control by 1983, so he sold his share of the business to his two partners and headed to Seattle and the University of Washington to work on a doctorate in mechanical engineering.

One day, as Zieve sat at his desk, Georg Mauer, then a UW assistant professor, dropped by to talk about rivets.

Despite the fact that Boeing uses the tiny metal cylinders by the millions to assemble airplanes, until then, Zieve said, “I had never even heard of a rivet.”

Changing of tap at Where-U-Brew Edmonds mainstay celebrates anniversary, new owners

EDMONDS — Dennis Gallagher had just lost his job as a cook on a Puget Sound tugboat in 1994 when he watched a television segment about people making their own beer.

The piece focused on a Canadian equipment and supplies provider and how an unemployed man the same age as Gallgher started a U-Brew business.

Gallagher and his wife Sandy did some research, contacted the company and found a storefront in Edmonds close to their home.

And that’s how they started Gallaghers’ Where-U-Brew 20 years ago.

“I never wanted my own business,” Dennis Gallagher said.

“We opened at a good time,” Sandy Gallagher said. “U-Brew was exploding.”

Gallagher’s Where-UBrew offers guests the opportunity to brew beer or make wine with all the proprietary recipes and supplies provided.

Guests can also quaff a pint of beer, fill a growler or have a party among the steam-fired, copper brewing kettles.

It has become an Edmonds institution with the Gallaghers fostering a friendly pub-like feel for their customers.

“People have made friends, prospered in life and shared their successes,” Dennis Gallagher said. “It’s not just about making beer. It’s about the importance of life and making a social connection.”

Customers bring in friends and groups, sharing their enthusiasm for the process. One group has been returning regu-

The family feel reflected back on the Gallaghers as demonstrated in December 2010 when the operation moved from the original downtown location to a larger facility by the Port of Edmonds. A group of 40 customers descended on the store to pack and move equipment, including the large kettles.

After Gallaghers’ moved into their new location

American Brewing Company opened in an adjacent spot and Salish Sea Brewing opened across the street.

“It is not about keeping people brewing batches of beer for years,” Dennis Gallagher said. “It is about creating a memory that customers tell their friends about. That is how to build a business. It is slow and arduous, but it works.”

Now the business is changing hands. Marcie and Tom Kretzler had such good memories of Gallaghers’ that they bought the business in October from the Gallaghers.

The Kretzlers — Marcie, an optician, and Tom, who works in technology — were looking for something different that they could do together. The couple have been married for a year.

They plan to keep the name, Gallaghers’ Where-U-Brew.

“We are planning to keep that sense of community,” Marcie Kretzler said.

“It’s like coming home,” said Tom Kretzler, whose grandfather was a longtime Edmonds resident and physician.

The business created 20 years of memories, fun and sometimes headaches for the Gallaghers.

“When things go wrong, you have to fix it,” Dennis Gallagher said.

He recalled coming close to running out of bottles.

He got on the phone and found three pallets in Utah. Another time the strong Euro caused most of the Washington hop crop to be shipped to Europe. Relationships fostered over the years helped Gallaghers’ ingredient supply.

Dennis Gallagher credits his success to showing up every day and paying keen attention to his hiring.

He and his wife emphasize that this work is not suited as a career for all

craft beer enthusiasts.

“You have to hire right, and cut early if they don’t work out,” Dennis Gallagher said. “If you don’t like washing fermenters, this may not be a good fit. You have to like being cold and wet. The only glamor is in the end product.”

Once hired and trained in the art of U-Brew, the Gallaghers send their employees to Hopunion, a business in Yakima that offers a Hop & Brew School.

Gallaghers’ has been awarded top honors for their beers at local beer festivals. Former employees have gone on to larger brewers such as Scuttlebutt Brewing, Elysian Brewing and Mac & Jack’s.

In the early years Dennis became a source for U-Brew information while he was struggling to build his own business.

“It was a challenge to get people to stop picking my brain and just brew a batch,” he recalls. “That is the only way to learn this business.”

Gallaghers’ three fulltime employees will continue with the new owners.

New Workforce exec loves her job

EVERETT — Four words are painted outside of Erin Monroe’s office.

The bold white letters on the ocean blue wall spell out, ‘Love what you do.’

Monroe does that on a daily basis as the new chief executive officer of Workforce Snohomish.

“From when I first started working here I have been happy every day and you know you’re in the right place when you love your job,” she said. “It has its challenges but I love what we do and our mission.”

Monroe started her new role at Workforce Snohomish on Sept. 15. She takes the place of Sue Ambler, who retired in August after serving as the nonprofit’s CEO for eight years.

The organization located at 808 134th St. SW, focuses on preparing and supporting the current and future workforce within Snohomish County. It also invests government and private funding to help people gain employment and oversees WorkSource centers in Everett, Mountlake Terrace and Monroe.

The county’s unemployment rate has dropped from 10 percent to just more than 5 percent in the last two years and Monroe said she gives a lot of credit to the WorkSource centers for the decrease.

“We had a decrease in our funding of 20 percent this year,” she said. “What that means is we’re doing our job to get people back to work because the funding follows unemployment and the rate and that’s just part of the calculations, so whenever we get that cut we know we did our job.”

As CEO, Monroe oversees a budget of nearly $9 million. She has started working with the nonprofit’s close to 50 different partners so current and future employment needs in the county can be fulfilled.

Monroe got her start with the Work-

force Snohomish in 2009 as the director of finance. Four years later she became the chief financial officer at the nonprofit.

Monroe is a certified public accountant who worked previously as a state auditor, an accountant for the City of Edmonds, and an internal auditor for PEMCO Insurance Co. Monroe understands the complexity of the whole organization and has a proven track record of team building, said Jeff Tomson, chairman of the Workforce Snohomish Board.

“She also is very good at building relationships and partnerships with the com-

munity and our selection choice to have Erin come on board was a culmination of all those positive attributes,” he said.

Monroe has a personable, engaging style and can carry on from where Ambler left off, said Ed Petersen, executive director of Housing Hope.

“She’s got the historical context and has been there long enough to know how the system works and who the players are,” he said. “She’s been out in the community a lot. I love her energy.

Moving forward, Monroe wants to help grow the My First Job program, which was started last spring to connect employers with youths. She also plans to put together a case study about how Workforce Snohomish hired 89 people after the March 22 Oso mudslide. Those hired were considered long-term unemployed and work alongside Snohomish Parks and Recreation Department personnel on trails and other renovation projects until the end of October.

She is also going ahead with an idea proposed by Ambler to start a for-profit company to develop sustainable funding for the Workforce Snohomish. The company, Infralign, is expected to be incorporated in December, Monroe said.

“It’s a slow process,” Monroe said.

“There are not very many nonprofits that are opening for profit arms. We’re not rushing into things we want to make sure it’s done right.”

Compassionate care while on the road

EVERETT — Shirley Allen pulls up a computer screen with a map showing the major roads throughout Puget Sound region.

Little dots on the screen show where all of her vans are at during any given moment.

“If anyone speeds, we get a big flashing alert,” Allen said.

She and her husband Les operate Mercy Transportation, a for-profit business transporting people to non-emergency medical appointments.

Most of their customers are Medicaid patients — which pays for the transportation — but the business also transports private patients and some veterans.

“This is definitely a growth industry just with the aging population,” Shirley Allen said.

She was just named Paratransit Operator of the Year by the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association, a national group representing more than 1,000 forhire fleets.

One of the reasons she won the award was her and her husband’s eagerness to embrace technology, said Alfred LaGasse, the association’s chief executive officer, in a statement.

“Shirley is a true innovator in the field of paratransit transportation,” LaGasse said. “Her eagerness to implement tech-

nological advancements within her business is a true inspiration for transportation leaders everywhere.”

Shirly and Les Allen, who live in Everett, are relatively new to the industry.

She had worked in real-estate development and he had worked in construction finance. They decided to get out of the field when the housing bubble started growing.

“When our daughter got a zero-down, interest-only loan while working as a barista, we realized this was going to blow up and we needed to start looking for another line of work,” Shirley Allen said.

In 2006, they purchased Mercy Transportation. Shirley Allen said they found skeletons in the closet almost immediately.

The biggest was when the former owner was accused of Medicaid fraud.

Armed federal marshals came to seize records. The Allens say the previous owner has fled the county.

“I’m such a namby-pamby rule follower,” Shirley Allen said. “It’s shocking when that happened.”

They realized early into the new business that they needed to learn a lot. So they joined the association to learn about the industry and make contacts to help them with problems.

“It’s really hard to ask your competitor, ‘Teach me,’” Shirley Allen said.

ish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island, San Juan and King counties. While people on government aid are required to take public transit, that’s not an option for many people who live far away from those options or who have to travel long distances to make their appointments.

“It shouldn’t take six hours to get to a one-hour appointment,” Shirley Allen said.

drivers, two dispatchers and an operations supervisor. Their drivers are given 80 hours of training before they log their first mile. That compares with four hours by taxicab drivers, the Allens said.

They’ve excelled at growing their business and taken leadership positions in the association, said Mike Fogarty, CEO of Tristar Worldwide in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I’m really happy for them,” Fogarty said. “It’s a pleasure to serve with Shirley on the Para-transit Steering Committee.

They’re really wonderful people.”

Some of the people that the company transports are extremely grateful for the ride. Others are less so.

“It’s a tough job,” Shirley Allen said.

“You’re driving in traffic with people who don’t feel good.”

“Under time constraints all day long,” Les Allen added.

While there’s a growing population, the number of rides that the company has given has actually dropped. In 2008, Mercy Transportation made 33,315 individual trips. Last year, the number of individual trips fell to 29,766.

That’s a function of government agencies tightening their belts during the recession, Shirley Allen said.

“When times are great, then we make a big deal about helping our most vulnerable,” Shirley Allen said. “But when times get bad, they’re the first ones that get nailed.”

Para-Phernalia in business of saving lives

Skydivers jump out of airplanes on purpose, but some people jump because their aircraft is no longer working right.

Para-Phernalia, a small business at the Arlington Municipal Airport, caters to the latter.

A parachute consists of three major parts — canopy, harness, and container.

Most people are familiar with the canopy — it’s the part that resembles a giant bed sheet and billows above the jumper’s head upon descent. The canopy attaches to the body via a harness and is stowed in a container until it’s needed. Para-Phernalia chose to focus their design on harnesses and containers; they obtain canopies from a company in Southern California.

Dan Tarasievich, an engineer originally from the Midwest and a skydiver since 1972, bought the company in 1984 and moved it to the Arlington Municipal Airport in 1992.

At the same time, he sold off the skydiving part of the operation to focus on emergency parachutes, which have a huge demand from pilots flying in air shows, vintage military aircraft, aircraft formations, aerobatic competitions, air racing, gliders and homebuilt aircraft.

Tarasievich said what sets his product apart from other manufacturers of pilot emergency parachutes is comfort. Skydivers only wear their parachutes for a

few minutes at a time so comfort isn’t a major issue, but pilots and other aircrew members often keep their parachutes on for hours as they fly air show routines and ferry airplanes around the country.

When Julie Clark, a petite air show pilot, tried on one of Tarasievich’s “microSoftie” emergency parachutes at an air show, she told him, “This is the first parachute I’ve ever put on that fit me.”

In addition to making a sale to Clark, Tarasievich made an on-the-spot commitment to keep manufacturing parachutes

for pilots of all sizes. That commitment has been a good business model, both in the U.S. and overseas, as international sales now account for about one-fourth of Para-Phernalia’s business.

Tarasievich said, “If we had to rely on just U.S. business, we wouldn’t be the same company.” One overseas customer is German company Extra Aircraft, makers of high performance aerobatic aircraft.

Tarasievich said that an Extra employee visited Para-Phernalia’s booths during European air shows, and Extra now buys

Softie parachutes have been used to save at least 34 pilot lives to date, although Para-Phernalia doesn’t hear about all bailouts. In particular, Tarasievich said European pilots seem reticent to discuss bailouts, although he knows that Softie parachutes saved the lives of two British pilots in 1999 when their fiberglass glider disintegrated after a lightning strike.

Para-Phernalia employs eight people, most with flexible hours. Tarasievich said, For additional diversification, the company also recently expanded into making specialized covers for medical equipment, which accounts for about 5 percent of their business.

Many of the employees are current or former skydivers. Jonathan Clark, who sews and builds harness components, also works part time at an indoor skydiving facility. Jimmy Culler, with the company since 1980, started out sewing hats until another employee taught him how to design parachutes; he has been chief designer since the 1990s. A former skydiver, he took up hang gliding in 1995, which he views as safer.

Holly Sampson, the office administrator, grew up at the airport with her parents’ ultralight aircraft business.

She said, “The best part of my job is, when you get that one phone call that says they’re having coffee with their family when they might not have been. ”

Hockey buff turns hobby into business

EVERETT — Bryce Peters placed his pair of hockey skates on the counter at Shooters Hockey Center.

The 14-year-old member of the Everett Youth Hockey Jr. Silvertips was preparing for an evening game just two blocks north at Xfinity Arena. The ice hockey pro shop at 2726 Lombard Ave. is his favorite spot to get his skates sharpened.

“I’ve been to other places and this is the best,” he said. “I also like the way (the store) is set up. It’s nice here.”

Bryce needs his skates sharpened about twice a week, said his mom, Cammy Peters. The yearly sharpening pass they bought at Shooters Hockey Center is well used and appreciated.

“They have the best prices as far as skate sharpening,” she said. “And they have a variety of items. If you need something for a game and are at the arena, they have it.”

Those are the kind of remarks that shop owner Peter Robinson, 29, likes to hear. He said Shooters Hockey Center has built a solid reputation for providing the best skate sharpening around.

“I would put our sharpening reputation on the line against anybody,” Robinson said.

ees are also invested in hockey and have either played or play the sport and care about sharpening skates well, Robinson said.

Not everything has gone exactly as Robinson, a 2010 graduate of Eastern Washington University, imagined when he first opened his shop in October 2012.

The business originally included a training facility that offered a small synthetic rink and a RapidShot training system that automatically passed pucks and measured shooting accuracy, speed and reaction time. The training side of the business had a few strong individual

supporters, Robinson said. But it didn’t receive enough support from the local youth hockey players and leagues.

“Kids would use the facility but only when it was free or discounted so it wasn’t a good money-making model,” he said.

The training aspects of his business were shut down in August when the shop moved to the opposite side the building that Robinson has owned since July 2012.

All of the training equipment was broken down, then sold or kept in storage pending sale. He leases the other half of the building as a CrossFit location.

The store’s small sales floor offers a

variety of hockey equipment including sticks, gloves, pads and helmets. A Blackstone triple head sharpening machine is positioned behind the counter. Sharpening costs $7.

An annual pass is available for $70.

Shooters Hockey Center also offers custom and repair work on skates. Robinson plans to build out the backroom of his store to carry a larger inventory. “We cater more to the higher-end player,” Robinson said. “Those are the players that are going to take advantage of the fact we sharpen skates well and we do custom profiling and repair work.”

Domenic Spino of Edmonds prefers to have his skates sharpened at Shooters Hockey Center. He plays for the Everett Youth Hockey Midget Bruins and changed the sharpening method of his skates at the recommendation of Shooters employee and youth hockey coach, Kenny Emery.

“It feels much better to skate on,” said Spino, 16. “I’ve been to places that do a horrible job (sharpening skates). He does a really good job.”

Matching home sellers with buyers

It’s like a matchmaking website.

Only for real estate.

A new company is trying to make it easier for homeowners to get a feel for interest in their home before they put their house on the market. And allow buyers to connect

with them.

The online start-up service Rebls provides a website where you type in your address and see people who are looking for homes in your area. If you want to go a step further, you can post your home on the site and they’ll even send out a professional photographer for free to take pictures of your home.

“We’re not shy about saying we want to make

real estate better than it is now,” said Adriane Holter, vice president, communications for Rebls. The business model makes it free for both the buyer and seller. The company charges a fee for real estate agents and eventually plans to do the same for title companies.

“Rebls monetizes through agents and soon lenders. Currently we just

have agents on the site.

Agents pay us a monthly fee to have a profile. It’s basically a marketing service for them where they create their profile,” Holter said.

The Seattle-based company launched in October in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties.

“It’s a really cool way for us to make the site look beautiful, people like looking at beautiful photos which is great for us, the homeowner and buyer,” Holter said.

The company was initially called a Real Estate Buyers Listing Service, but was quickly shortened to the acronym “Rebls” and made a proper noun.

Rebls was founded in 2010 by Bryan Copley who was later joined

by Jeff White in 2013.

Copley, who is originally from Mountlake Terrace and went to Lake Stevens High School, said technology should be the catalyst to making buying and selling homes easier.

“I started Rebls because real estate should be focused on the experiences of people and their homes, not the pain of the current real estate process,” Copley said.

People using the site are able to contact other consumers on the site through Rebls’ communication platform.

“We want to create this market place for people to very early on keep a pulse on the market, and have more insight of what’s going on with their most important asset which is their home,” Holter said.

The website has partnered with real estate agents that are willing to lower their commission for clients who have matched themselves with a home on Rebls.

There is also a section of the website that says, “Find an Agent,” for those who may have more questions or do not already have an agent they work with.

“We are not trying to cut out the agent, we are just trying to make the match-making portion of real estate more efficient,” Holter said. “Agents are negotiators, educators, transaction coordinators, and the experts, that’s why we work with agents.”

Consider these two scenarios: Your manager enters the office and from across the room you can already see a frown on her face.

You just hope she’s going to go straight to her own office. But, no, she looks at you and signals for you to come with her to her office.

Walking down the hall, you feel that nervous feeling in your stomach like you’re going to the principal’s office, even though you’re a grown up.

about what your strategy has been, what’s working to close your deals and what’s not working. You then create a plan together for the next 30 days, which includes an accountability meeting in 15 days. You leave the office feeling supported, energized and ready to implement new ideas.

Which scenario would motivate you to work harder and be more productive?

As a leader, make it your goal to minimize how much you expose your team to negative feelings and emotions that you will naturally have. No one is perfect and we’re all going to have bad days of our own. Aim for consistency in both your interactions and your mood when working with your team.

How to engage the disengaged A

recent survey by the Gallup organization found that just 30 percent of American workers are “actively engaged.”

The remaining 70 percent are divided into two groups: 20 percent are “actively disengaged” and trying to undermine management; and 50 percent are just plain disengaged.

Imagine what the workplace would be like if we could somehow get just half of the disengaged workers to be committed to what they were doing all day. The productivity increase alone would accelerate our businesses — and our economy — into escape velocity, limited only by our imaginations.

The Gallup report on its survey, “State of the American Workplace,” points out the bottom line implications for this situation and describes the successful and profitable efforts of some companies in turning the workplace environment around.

Changing the level of engagement of workers requires management to address two separate groups with separate problems. The bottom 20 percent, the “actively disengaged” workers, are negative influences who will subvert everything management attempts to do in the workplace.

They create a poisonous atmosphere because their attitude has a suffocating effect on other workers. If management doesn’t address the problem these people present, other workers will eventually

be demoralized — forced to assume that management is totally clueless, incompetent, or doesn’t care…and maybe all three.

In contrast, most of the 50 James percent of workers McCusker who are just plain disengaged are more likely guilty business of what economist 101 Thorstein Veblen called, “industrial sabotage” — the conscious withholding of productivity. It is difficult to measure this directly, partly because it is often indistinguishable from a generalized preference for idleness.

Veblen provided that definition nearly a century ago, when America was a growing manufacturing giant. Today’s workplace is very different and industrial sabotage most often takes the form of Internet games, social media browsing and interacting, swapping gossip and sports stories, and other, similar time-thefts.

Can management boost the level of engagement? Yes. Engagement is about two things: motivation and reinforcement. It is rarely about money, if wages and salaries are reasonably competitive. If management thinks that money is all that is required

to turn things around they are mistaken.

Money plays an important role initially, of course, but almost never a sustaining one. More importantly, if it is used as a substitute for leadership and positive day-to-day management the results will be disappointing.

Motivation sounds like it might be a job for experts, and in some cases it is.

Most often, though, a company’s managers can turn things around themselves — assuming they are capable of recognizing the problem and addressing it effectively.

Getting managers to recognize the problem isn’t as easy as it sounds because in most cases the problem is management. It is easier to blame the engagement and motivational problems on the workers themselves, on the schools or on the way kids are raised today. There is no denying that those things are factors, but the quality of management is the dominant and deciding element. You are the manager and when you change the workers will change.

What if you’re not the boss but do manage a team? Where should you begin? First of all, start in areas where you don’t need permission, authorization or approval of any sort. Begin with the fundamentals and of these the simplest is respect. If you respect workers they will respect you and that will provide the initial motivation to “do a good job,” the first step in engagement and commitment.

Start with the easy stuff. Start the day

by saying “Good Morning” to workers, especially your team members. Make sure that you look them in the eye when you say it, not your cell phone or some routine report. A smile is optional, but effective.

Next, add “Thank You” to your vocabulary and practice using it as often as appropriate.

It is a sign of recognition and appreciation. Completing a task might seem routine to you but should be appreciated when it is done well.

You should also begin to lead by example.

First, if you are not doing this already, be respectful when you answer the phone, even if it is an “inside” call or you recognize the name from caller ID. There can be exceptions to this, of course, but make sure they are rare.

The use of “Good morning” and “Thank you” are the beginnings of mutual respect and will also restore an element of humanity to the workplace.

Reintroducing good communications procedure will help create or restore a professional atmosphere to your work.

Taken together these actions will begin to change the workplace environment and set the stage for further management efforts at motivating and engaging the workforce — and increase the probability that those efforts will be successful.

Learning how to frame the problem I

wrote a column in August that generated a lot of email. That column was about the three traits of a successful company, and what it takes to generate breakthrough growth.

Many of the emails I received had comments such as, “I understand the formula, but how do I solve my business problem.”

You spoke and I listened. This column is the first in a series of four about how to solve problems that are keeping your business from achieving breakthrough growth.

Every business has challenges that keep them from achieving their growth goals.

Most business problems fall in the categories of marketing (lead generation and sales), organization (structure and staff), finance (capital and cash flow) and operations (procedures and logistics.) Many companies have multiple challenges that need to be addressed.

Successful companies find and implement solutions to those challenges.

An effective approach to solving problems used by business consulting firms involves a four step process: 1) framing the problem, 2) gathering the data, 3) interpreting the results, and 4) imple-

menting the solution.

This first column in my series covers framing the problem.

The big consulting firms begin the problem solving Andrew process by framBallard ing the problem; and they do so Growth in a structured, hypothesis-driven strategies framework. This approach involves coming up with a hypothesis — as a solution to the problem — at the beginning of the process.

Coming up with a solution (hypothesis) at the beginning of the problem solving process may seem counterintuitive; however, it is remarkably effective and can save a considerable amount of time and money.

This is inductive reasoning, which involves coming up with a hypothesis based on observation and the information available, versus a deductive approach of researching every possible avenue.

Be your own consultant Part 1 in a series of four columns to help your business overcome barriers to breakthrough growth.

Think about a maze game where you draw a line from the start to the finish.

However, by drawing your line from the finish to the start you’ll find it faster and easier because you don’t go down as many dead ends.

The same is true in solving a problem, when you start with the end (with a hypothesis or conclusion), you eliminate most of the dead ends.

The most common tool used by expert consultants is called an Issue Tree (also referred to as a Logic Tree).

An Issue Tree lays out the issue and sub issues in a visual progression of branch levels (Google “Issue Tree” for examples).

This first level of an Issue Tree is a problem statement formatted as a question, e.g. how do we increase gross

margin on XYZ widget sales. The second level of the tree branches out to sub issues to the problem statement, e.g. branch one — reduce cost; branch two — increase price. Additional branches would sprout from the second level and continue until a logical conclusion is reached.

Essentially, an Issue Tree breaks down a problem into separate elements as a means of determining the root cause of the problem. In turn, it will make formulating an initial hypothesis a logical process.

After you have a hypothesis (solution to your problem), you’ll determine what data to gather. I’ll cover that process in next month’s column.

Be your own consultant and begin by framing the problem — create an Issue Tree and develop an initial hypothesis.

Entrepreneurial spirit can’t be taught I

have been giving talks on entrepreneurship to business leaders, college students and other groups for the past few years.

The most common question I’m asked by college students is how did I know I was an entrepreneur and what classes should they take to become one themselves.

I answer them with a rhetorical question: Are you obsessed about something right now?

Is there a problem in the world or a process you see that you just can’t stop thinking about in the shower, in class and late at night?

If there is, I point out in a Jeff Foxworthy-like tone, then you might be an entrepreneur.

Santa Clara is Catholic Jesuit university located in the Silicon Valley in California, arguably one the most entrepreneurial places on the planet.

Over the past two decades, the unique blending of ideas, capital and energy there has re-shaped the type of student they attract.

“There are lots of really smart people and lots of really creative people in businesses and institutions today,” explained an admissions staffer on a recent visit.

“We call them smart-creatives here in

Silicon Valley. But to be a leader for tomorrow, people must be especially trustworthy and at the same time obsessive about solving a problem.”

Tom Santa Clara Hoban “seeks to admit and develop students realty who have natural entrepreneurial markets traits and are likely, just as the Jesuits did when they formed 450 years ago, to do heroic things.”

Nearly one-third of their student body were captains of a sport in high school and more than 70 percent held leadership positions earned by a vote of peers, he added as a point of emphasis.

“They are top students, but they are also people whom others trust to lead them.”

Down the road from Santa Clara, Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg, the two men who transformed Google into world dominance today, offer a similar take of the modern entrepreneur in their book, “How Google Works.”

For most entrepreneurs there’s no on-and-off switch where you live in one place and you work in another. You’re just “on” all the time.

They write about a pivotal point in the mid-2000s when they launched their ambitious business plan that had, as a unique set of features, no marketing or advertising strategy, no budget, no department heads and no formal tactics.

What their plan did have, they noted, was an obsessive, entrepreneurial idea built over a transparent, open and honest platform.

It worked.

My journey in real estate with my very dynamic business partner and brother, Shawn Hoban, has been similarly obsessive and decidedly entrepreneurial, I tell students.

Recruiters today up-sell a healthy livework balance and applicants for leadership positions they send our way often ask about that.

We have an answer, of course.

But the question itself often creates a separation for us right away because for most entrepreneurs there’s no on-and-off

The truth is, like most entrepreneurs, some of our ideas work, some don’t. With experience, you try to reduce the number that don’t.

As I explain to students, though, the obsession of being the best at something never goes away and in entrepreneurs it’s hard to kill.

On November 4, 2014, the Port of Everett Commission adopted the 2015 operating and capital budget with $76.7 million in expenditures.

The 2015 Budget is quite different than previous Port of Everett budgets, as it is specifically tailored to achieving the Port Commission’s five strategic initiatives. These include: • Planning, permitting and constructing a 1,000 foot plus shipping berth to continue to meet our customers’ needs • Improve the budget process by developing a long term financing plan for a multi-year capital budget organized by initiative • Develop a strategy for recapitalizing and paying for the marina • Development an organizational structure that supports accomplishing these initiatives; and • Develop a regulatory strategy for project implementation.

To accomplish these goals, we have moved from an annual operating and capital budget to a one year operating budget and a five year capital plan based on strategic initiatives of the Port Commission that is supported with a long-term funding strategy.

“The 2015 budget is built on a platform to set the stage for long-term growth,” Executive Director John Mohr said.

“The budget assumes strong growth in seaport activities and modest growth in the marina and real estate divisions.

The 2015 budget contemplates $34 million in operating revenues, $5.75 million in non-operating revenue (includes a 2% growth in property taxes). These revenues, along with cash reserves and anticipated borrowings, will support $26 million in operating costs and a healthy $45.4 million in environmental cleanups and capital investments.”

This year, staff took the first step to group all the capital projects by initiative. This effort resulted in 23 strategic initiative capital budget categories, 101 projects — 78 of which are proposed to have activity in 2015. These strategic capital initiatives total $133.2 million over the next five years, $45.4 million in 2015 alone. Next year’s capital program will support more than 1,100 construction jobs.

The proposed fund allocations are designed to support our continued effort to remediate legacy contamination on our properties, the reinvestment in our facilities, maintenance of our facilities and equipment and investment in growth opportunities.

“This new structure has allowed us to more directly tie the importance of the individual projects with our property development priorities,” Mohr said. “This focused approach allows us to create economic opportunities that spur private sector investment in our community.”
