An early rally for the win Trial rests with judge After three weeks of testimony, the verdict in the case of the man accused of brutally murdering his wife is expected Wednesday. By Diana Hefley Herald Writer
EVERETT — A Snohomish County judge plans Wednesday to announce her verdict in the trial of a Bothell man accused of beating, stabbing and drowning his estranged wife. Susann Smith’s friends were heard saying Friday that they were grateful they wouldn’t have to wait much longer to learn Alan Smith’s fate. They have sat through three weeks of testimony, including the grisly accounts of how their friend, a mother of two young children, was struck and stabbed nearly two dozen times and then dragged into a bathtub where she drowned. Susann Smith’s sister attended part of the trial but had returned to Germany by Friday when lawyers gave closing arguments. Alan Smith, 39, is charged with

Medal would honor cities hit by slide By Jerry Cornfield Herald Writer
OLYMPIA — The Senate acted Friday to make it possible to award one of the state’s highest
honors to the communities of Arlington, Oso and Darrington for heroism their residents demonstrated in response to the deadly mudslide last March. On a 47-0 vote, the Senate
passed a bill to allow the state Medal of Valor to be given to a group of people for their efforts to save, or attempt to save, another person’s life. Under existing law, only individuals are
eligible to receive this civilian honor. Senate Bill 5035 now goes to See MEDAL, back page, this section

Location manager du Mas will field questions from the audience after the screening.

“I hope all the local extras — the Cascade and Everett high school football players and the Everett cops — will show up, as well as the owners of all the properties where we shot,” du Mas said. “We couldn’t have done it without them.” The movie, in which Everett doubles as a “desolate” city, is about three down-on-their-luck young men who commit an ill-fated robbery.
