Naval Base Kitsap is the second largest naval base in the country, and drives the healthy economy throughout Kitsap County. But the northern end of the county is far less dependent on the defense industry than our Kitsap County neighbors to the south. The economy of Greater Poulsbo and our surrounding communities is defined more by business diversity. Yes, we boast great technology companies, like Blue Frog Solar, which provides Made in Washington solar arrays to its growing customer base for a cleaner and healthier planet (see cover photo). But we are also home to Watson, makers of fine European-style commercial furniture, and Trulife, one of the world leaders in prosthetics design and craftsmanship, who both have long lists of nationwide and international customers. And something very exciting is happening in the education sector: up on the Olhava Development in northwest Poulsbo, a “college town� is emerging. Business in Greater Poulsbo age—both of whom top $100 million in annual sales. But small businesses are our bread and butter—72 percent of Greater Poulsbo businesses have fewer than five employees. In our region, we have about the same number of attorneys as we have restaurants, and slightly more insurance agents than dentists. But the largest single professional group here is physicians and surgeons. High-end and specialty medical services, as well as alternative treatment centers, are growing. More than 300 new businesses started up in the past two years. Certainly, not all will thrive—but in a community the size of Greater Poulsbo, that’s an impressive and encouraging number. Growth means strength. In the City of Poulsbo alone, sales tax revenues averaged nearly a 10-percent increase over 2013, with as much as 14 percent in some months. Commercial and residential appraisals are up, and home sales prices are generally above appraisals.

Seattle is known for its vibrant economy and as a hub for entrepreneurial energy. It’s also known for heavy traffic and unapproachable downtown rent fees. Industry in North Kitsap Greater Poulsbo used to be known as a bedroom community, with most residents commuting by ferry to Seattle and beyond for work. Many still do, but recently a handful of industrial parks, mostly hidden from the view our main roads, have developed that are home to many of our local manufacturers and non-retail businesses. Business in Greater Poulsbo One of our newer brags is Peninsula Cancer Center, home of some of the finest oncology specialists in the nation. That’s saying quite a lot, since Seattle is home to the world-renown Cancer Care Alliance. Dr. Berit Madsen, a radiation oncologist who regularly commuted to work in Seattle, noticed that many of her patients were on the same boat—and worried about the time, expense, and fatigue that those many trips would cost them. It just seemed to make sense to her to open a treatment center in Kitsap. And Poulsbo was her choice. A Bright Future Ahead The number of businesses who are joining the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce and renewing their memberships has been rising (currently over 400), and that will continue in 2015 – which is one of the key indicators of an improving economy. So is hotel tax revenue, which is also on the rise, along with sales tax revenue in the City of Poulsbo, with those double digit increases this year over last year. With the perspective that “a rising tide raises all boats,” the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce will be focused over the next year on finding ways to help our members capitalize on the growth, as well as sustain it. And for the first time in recent memory,
we are developing a long range strategic plan over this next year that will help our organization and our members be better prepared for “the cycle of seasons” through at least 2025. Chamber Ambassadors The Ambassadors of the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce are volunteers who help us stay connected with our members. They each take responsibility for a group of members, and contact their assigned members throughout the year, helping them with any needs and requests they might have for the Chamber. Ambassadors also help run our events, especially ribbon cuttings, open houses, and President’s Happy Hours. They are the first to volunteer for duty for the Gala, the golf tournament, and Poulsbo Uncorked. They are invaluable. Most ambassadors volunteer from our member businesses, so it’s a program that is really about businesses helping businesses – which is what the Chamber of
